A 92-YEAR-OLD man robbed in his home shortly after he collects his pension – it’s just not something you’d expect in Downend. When Emily Beer overheard the pensioner telling post office staff about his plight, she felt she had to act. After “having a bit of a rant on Facebook” she found others shared her wish to show the victim that there were good people in the world too. They rallied round and collected for a Christmas hamper, and were able to present it to the elderly gentleman, who was identified by a family friend.

January, 2014

A Happy New Year to all our readers HERE we are at the start of 2014 – and we hope it will be a happy and successful year for you all. We at Downend Voice would like to thank everyone who has supported us since we launched last April. Our news magazine is going from strength and it is a pleasure and honour to bear witness to the vast range of activity that takes place in the area. There can hardly be a better illustration of the fantastic community spirit than our lead story this month, when strangers flocked to help a 92-year-old burglary victim. Emily Beer, who organised the support for the elderly man, said: “If I won the lottery and could afford to buy a house anywhere in the world, I would not move. I feel privileged and fortunate to live in a community where people rally together when there’s someone in need.” It’s people that make a neighbourhood and you will find many stories in our pages of residents who are making their mark and making a difference to others. We love to hear your stories, so please get in touch via Facebook and Twitter or our website www.downendvoice.co.uk, where you can also read our publication online if you are not one of the 10,000 households where a free copy is delivered monthly. In addition to our circulation, hundreds of copies are available at pick-up points in Downend, Staple Hill, Mangotsfield and Emersons Green. Between publication dates, you can get the latest news on our website or by following us on social media.

Guitar school ready to rock and roll DO you like to rock ‘n’ roll? Do you enjoy making music? If the answer to those questions is yes, then a new specialist music school in Downend is for you. Bristol Rock Guitar is opening up in the former doctor’s surgery in Stockwell Drive and promises a great deal more than simply guitar and drum lessons. The team behind the rock school say they want to bring together musicians of all ages to create a vibrant musical community. Rich Thornton, Becky Baldwin and Chris Hawkins began developing the idea when they were all studying at the Bristol Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) in Stokes Croft. Rich, who has played in rock bands for more than 30 years, began by converting a garage at his home in Croomes Hill into a studio. Bristol Rock Guitar hosts Get Up and Rock sessions at weekends at Yate International Academy where both teenagers and adults can experience playing with others.

It also runs regular gig nights at the Thunderbolt in Bristol, where new bands can perform live in public in front of a partisan, friendly audience. BRG has already created two young bands, The Peruvian Fighting Sheep and The Lipstick Murders, and a more mature group, Midde Age Rampage. The conversion of what used to be Dr Stambuli’s surgery into the school will provide more opportunities for musicians. The school, which will be up and running by the end of the month, includes a teaching room, a live rehearsal room and a drum room, all with extensive soundproofing, a chill-out reception area, a shop and a comfortable waiting area for parents. Lessons in guitar, bass, drums and vocals will be on offer, as well as support and mentoring for bands. The project has been made possible thanks to the backing of some local businesses and some successful grant applications. “We are trying our best to make a fabulous job of it,

Becky Baldwin, Chris Hawkins and Rich Thornton, of Bristol Rock Guitar and we have had a very warm welcome from people in the neighbourhood. The building is ideal as it meets disability access requirements – meaning we can be fully exclusive – and it has dedicated parking,” said Rich. “We know some young people only ever play guitar in their bedrooms. We want to liberate them; give them the chance to meet like-minded people, experience the pleasure of playing with others and gain the

confidence to perform in public.” Chris, who teaches guitar and vocals, added: “It is really important to have positive support when you start out.” Chris and Becky, who is one of the best-known young female bass players in the country, are both members of the heavy metal covers band Metalhead. For information about BRG, visit their website www. bristolrockguitar.co.uk or find them on Facebook.

ADVERTISEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE NHS

Across the country, approximately 47 per cent of people attending an A&E department could have received the same service via their GP, by telephoning NHS 111 or by calling in at an NHS walk-in centre, minor injuries unit or urgent care centre. This winter, local people are being asked to Think ABC before A&E:

Anytime free medical advice from NHS 111 Book an appointment with your GP surgery Call in at your local Minor Injuries unit or Walk-in Centre The campaign has been co-ordinated on behalf of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCGs). You can get information about your local services at: www.thinkabc. org.uk. Dr Jonathan Hayes, the GP Chair of South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s really important that

people know exactly where to go for the right treatment. A&E departments are extremely busy, and people coming to them with a minor injury and illness may have to face longer waits, particularly if there are major or complex injuries brought into the department by ambulance. “So before considering A&E we would ask that local people really think about the best

Dr Jonathan Hayes place to go for treatment or advice – that could be their GP, calling 111 for advice, talking to a pharmacist or visiting a Walk-in Centre or minor injuries unit where waiting times to be seen can be considerably less than A&E. Of course, in a serious life-threatening emergency do not wait, call 999 for immediate assistance.”

Think ABC before A&E Anytime advice from NHS 111

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day and is free to call – just dial 111 It has been introduced primarily if you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency or you need medical information or reassurance

about what to do next. The phone lines are operated by fully trained advisors or nurses who will ask you questions about

your symptoms. They may provide information and guidance or direct you to the most appropriate health service that can help you best.

Book an appointment with your GP Book an appointment with your GP GP surgeries should be the first port of call when you are feeling unwell, having on-going illnesses or need advice. Many practices offer

later and longer opening hours and emergency appointments. If it is urgent you can also see a GP outside of usual opening

hours. Just call your surgery and a recorded message will give you information on how to contact the out of hours service.

Call at your local Minor Injuries Unit here are two minor injuries units locally - Southmead Hospital and the Yate T Westgate Centre. X-ray facilities are available Patients will be seen by a highly-trained emergency nurse practitioner in a calm and relaxed setting. Patients can drop in without

an appointment or they may be referred by their GP or other health professional. MIU treatments include: Cuts and

Mystery shopper goes viral as part of Levanna’s northern soul dance video A DANCING gentleman from Staple Hill has become a surprise internet sensation – but he doesn’t know a thing about it. The man can be seen on a YouTube video dancing along with beaming Bristol teenager Levanna Mclean as she northern soul dances along Broad Street towards Fountain Square. The infectious two minute 46 second dance video, to the tune of Pharrell Williams’ Happy, has gone viral, attracting more than 300,000 visitors across the globe. Levanna has been inundated with people telling her they love the part when, one minute 38 seconds into the video, a man dressed in a brown jacket, black trousers and tan shoes, starts dancing beside her. The 17-year-old, from Winterbourne, has posted seven videos of herself northern soul dancing at various locations – each one characterised by her broad smile and distinctive dance moves. In one you can see her dancing her socks off at the top of Glastonbury Tor, while in another, she grooves her way across Clifton Suspension Bridge. She has even danced on a famous monument in Russia. But the video shot in Staple Hill is proving the biggest hit. Levanna, a sixth-form student at Winterbourne International Academy, said: “I still don’t know who the man is but I’ve got a lot to thank him for because that’s what people love about the video. “He is just so genuine. He can’t hear the music as I had headphones on in the video but clearly he feels something. I’d love for him to know how many people love him. Everyone says he’s amazing and makes the video.” The video shows Levanna springing onto Broad Street from Beaufort Road where you can spot Tesco in the background. As she glides down the road, pedestrians walk by and the music changes to the northern soul classic Happy by Velvet Hammer. When Levanna reaches Bunch

Do you know who the dancing gentleman is? Call Jayne on 07880 731148 florist she is spotted by the mystery man who just can’t help but join in. Levanna visits potential locations with mum Eve Arslett who films and edits the videos. When they drove through Staple Hill, they immediately knew Broad Street would be perfect. “As we went through Staple Hill, it seemed appropriate for what we wanted to do. It turned out a lot better than we thought because of the amazing reaction to the video.” The teenager made her first video when visiting Russia this summer. She is seen strutting her stuff across the Yury Dolguruky monument in Moscow. “It was a really slippery surface and I thought this would be a great place to dance. I

started sliding around and my mum filmed me. When we got home we thought it would be funny to put some music to it and then put it on YouTube. It got a really positive response and I enjoyed making it so much I decided to make another one and it just blossomed from there.” Levanna’s love of northern soul music developed after listening to her mum’s old records. “My mum was into it in the 80s and had all the records but it took me a while to realise how much I loved the music. I was into music like Amy Winehouse and the Specials so I had those soul influences but I wasn’t quite there. I then realised ‘Hang on, my mum’s got this gold mine of records, why have I never

thought about this before?’ “When you listen to music that you love, you can’t help but to start moving.” Levanna travels up and down the country to all-nighters where she dances the night away to northern soul music, Black American soul music which became popular in the north of England from the late 1960s. “Most of the all-nighters are up north, near the Stoke on Trent area, Rugby and Nuneaton. It’s definitely an obsession. When I come home from school, I listen to northern soul music, I dance to northern soul music, I have posters on my wall of record labels. It’s taken over my social life. “I never anticipated the positive reaction the videos would get. It’s so heart-warming when people message you privately on YouTube and say ‘We’ve fallen in love with you, we think you’re ace’. It really brings it home that these people have watched my videos and they like me for what I love doing and for being happy.” The first northern soul tune Levanna danced to was the Velvettes, I’ve Gotta Find Me Somebody, which remains one of her favourites along with The Precisions If this Is Love. “That tune epitomises me getting into northern soul,” she said. “It’s even influenced my YouTube name, If this Is Lev.” You Tube fame appears to run in Levanna’s family – her nine-year-old brother Schaeffer has reached more than two million hits demonstrating his skateboarding prowess. Buoyed by the reaction to her videos, Levanna has no plans to stop. She said: “I’ll definitely carry on posting videos because I love making them and seeing people’s reactions both whilst I’m making them and after I’ve put them on YouTube. It’s just so motivating and makes me want to make another one so more people can see. We need more happiness in the world so it would be great to influence some of that.”

FRIENDS, neighbours and complete strangers have rallied round to help a 92-year-old man after thieves ransacked his home, threatened him with a chisel and made off with his £2,000 savings. The gentleman’s plight came to their attention after resident Emily Beer overheard the man telling a counter assistant at Downend Post Office how he may have been followed home after withdrawing his pension because later that evening he had been targeted by robbers. Emily, 33, who lives in Bromley Heath, couldn’t get his story out of her head so she took to social network site Facebook to tell her friends what had happened.

I got on Facebook and ranted. I couldn’t believe what I’d heard

Within minutes, people responded to share their anger and disgust. But, in the true spirit of Christmas, their dismay quickly turned into something positive as people asked, ‘How can we help him?’ By chance her message was read by Downend resident Ruth Dorrell who realised she knew the man’s identity as he was an old family friend. Ruth, 37, contacted Emily to let her know and they discussed the best way everyone could help. Emily, who lives with partner Richard and their three-yearold son, said: “I was waiting in the queue in the Post Office and overheard an elderly man saying that the last time he was here he could have been followed because later that night his home was broken into. He said one of the men threatened him with a chisel while the other searched the house until they found his money. “I got on Facebook and ranted. I couldn’t believe what I’d heard.” Emily’s message was forwarded to Heathboard, an e-notice board on Facebook for the Bromley Heath community, where it was then spotted by Ruth. Emily said: “I had a message from someone who said ‘I think I know the person you are talking about’. “People kept messaging me asking if they could do something but now we knew who he was we were able to do something.

Strangers rally to aid robbery victim “Initially we thought about collecting money but then a few people suggested a hamper would be a better idea. It wasn’t about the hamper, or gifts, it was about showing him that there are some good people out there who care. It was about restoring his faith in people.” Emily, along with sister Lucy Ware, 29 and their 63-yearold mum Jean, masterminded a collection of goodies and festive treats, using Facebook to let people know what was happening. “Lots of friends and neighbours, as well as people I don’t even know, left items on my doorstep,” Emily said. “We were given so many things, we actually ended up with two hampers.” Among the items left were Christmas cake and pudding, chocolate, port, crisps, biscuits, tea and bubble bath as well as best wishes cards and children’s drawings to wish the gentleman a very happy Christmas. Local businesses also played their part, with the manager of Downend Co-op topping up donated gift vouchers to £60. Emily went with Ruth to present the hampers to the widower, whose identity Downend Voice has chosen not to reveal. Emily said: “I told him that the hampers were to show him how so many people care about what happened to him. “He told us we shouldn’t have done it but he was very grateful. At times he was tearful and he rang one of his friends to tell them what we had done.

I feel privileged to live in a community where people rally together

“I had to do something – it was all I could think about. It’s not just about the fact that they took his savings but they’ve taken his confidence. The people who did it to him probably don’t realise the impact it has. It has much wider implications than just the money.” Emily said she wanted to say a huge thank you. “I’m the lucky one because

through doing what I did, I have met so many nice people. There must have been at least 40 people who donated things. Although it was mostly people from Bromley Heath and Downend, there were others who came from across Bristol to donate items. “I also collect for the Julian Trust Night Shelter in Bristol and all it takes is for me to put a comment on Facebook and I’ll come home to bags full of items which have been donated by my local friends and neighbours. “If I won the lottery and could afford to buy a house anywhere in the world, I would not move. I feel privileged and fortunate to live in a community where people rally together when there’s someone in need. We are so lucky around here. There are so many people who do such wonderful things.” Ruth told Downend Voice that security cameras and a panic

alarm have been installed at the pensioner’s home following the incident. “The police believe he was followed when he went to collect his pension,” she said. “They took over £2,000 as well as his deceased wife’s jewellery. Luckily they didn’t hurt him but they kept him there while one of the men ransacked his house. It was very traumatic for him.” Ruth, a mum of two, said the act of kindness has helped restore her family friend’s faith in humanity. “He was almost in tears and was just so thankful and pleased. *If anyone has any information which could help police enquiries into the burglary on October 14, they can contact 101 quoting reference 102621/13. TWO Year 7 students at Mangotsfield School have been in the spotlight for their successes. Tom Carter Tom Carter is excelling at above chess and is Joel McCann now rated 19th below in the country in his category. He usually plays students three years older than himself and in a recent competition at the University of the West of England he beat the captain of the UWE team. Joel McCann is the first student in the school to read more than a million words as part of the Accelerated Reader scheme. To date the whole of Year 7 have read over 1,200 books and over 18 million words.

A DESPERATE man hammered on the door of Haven House in Staple Hill. After he was welcomed in, he broke down in tears as he told of his financial problems. Hilary Kitchen, of Christians Against Poverty, listened to the visitor’s woes and helped him decide how to tackle the crisis. First step was to sign up to the charity’s free debt help service, which is open to everyone, not just Christians. Haven House CAP centre opened five years ago and is one of 230 nationwide. It is supported by the congregation at Christ Church, Downend, and the church centre in Quakers Road, Bromley Heath. Hilary works with about 50 new clients a year. People in need can call in person at Haven House but most will be referred to him after ringing a national helpline number. “If they are in immediate need of food, we are able to supply them with food donated by church members,” he said.

Webbs Flowers The perfect arrangement for every occasion

“This is not part of the CAP service; it is just a demonstration of God’s love.” The centre is also a voucher holder for food banks in the area. Hilary visits clients at home and they are given support from CAP’s trained debt counsellors to work out a budget that prioritises essential bills. The charity also negotiates affordable payments with creditors and tries to stop unfair interest and charges. In most cases, a CAP account, a simple bank account, is set up into which the client pays a regular sum to cover bills and debts and the charity distributes it on their behalf. CAP also runs money management courses and job clubs. Nine million people in the UK are suffering with debt but only one in five seeks help. Statistics show the majority wait three more than three years before asking for assistance but the message from CAP is “don’t wait”. “It can be hard to admit

help is needed but debt is very difficult to escape without professional assistance,” said Hilary. “We know that people with debt are already often dealing with other problems; job loss or relationship problems, low income or illness, so we want to take the pressure off and give them the space to deal with some of that. “It’s all about taking that first step, knowing no one will pass judgement. We just want to look forward to the future.” The CAP number is 0800 328 0006.

Another new WI with the recipe for success FOR all those ladies who missed out on a chance to join the hugely popular Bromley Heath Women’s Institute, all is not lost. The launch of the new Downend WI is now just weeks away. The idea came about after a group of 11 friends saw how their husbands - who are mostly members of the Great Western Round Table - were out having a great time and raising money for charity as well. They put their heads together and decided they wanted a piece of the action. Buoyed by the success of Bromley Heath’s new WI, they thought this would be a great way for women to meet up and have fun. During their first get together they managed to pick a committee and ideas spiralled from there. The ladies are already planning their first 11 events and booking speakers but precise details are being kept top secret until the group’s launch night on January 28 when all will be revealed. One thing is clear though –

the emphasis will be on modern fun and some of the ideas raised include everything from Indian cooking to diving. The group is planning to open up membership to 70 women before setting up a waiting list. Meetings will take place on the last Tuesday evening of every month at Christ Church Hall in Downend and there are plans afoot to set up sub groups in the future as well as developing other projects like fundraising. Mum-of-two Tracey Simmonds, 37, is acting president of the group. She said: “Myself and a few friends wanted to do something socially. We went along to the Bromley Heath meeting but found it was a large group so decided to do something smaller within Downend. “We wanted to get together, get out and do things which are fun. It’s about making friends, having fun and gaining new skills.” Downend WI went live on Facebook on December 18 and already interest is high. The first meeting of Bromley Heath WI attracted 350 women.

Is Tracey expecting similar crowds? “We are expecting a lot of women,” Tracey said. “There’s been a lot of interest from people asking how they can join and giving us their ideas. “A lot of women said they missed out on joining Bromley Heath WI so I think they will be trying to join Downend WI. “We don’t want to step on Bromley Heath WI’s toes. We are taking their advice and have a friendly relationship with them. In the future we might work alongside them if there are any big events.” Tracey said joining a WI was an inexpensive way to form friendships. “People are dying to get out and meet people socially but

many people are on a budget. The WI subscription for the year isn’t too expensive. “Society these days can be quite isolating with people texting and going on Facebook rather than actually meeting up. “People can become isolated once they have children or if they are new to an area and there’s not much opportunity out there to meet people and do things as part of a group and that’s the attraction with the WI. “Many people are also interested in learning new things as I don’t think you really get that after school or college.” The group’s inaugural meeting takes place on Tuesday January 28 at Christ Church Hall, North Street, Downend at 7.30pm. To find out more visit Downend WI’s page on Facebook. *It's great to report on the new WIs in Bromley Heath and Downend. We'd love to hear from members of the established Women's Institutes in Staple Hill and Mangotsfield too. Please get in touch at news@downendvoice. co.uk

ELEVEN much-needed affordable homes are to be built on the site of the former Blackhorse Day Centre. The £1.4m scheme for family homes and one-bedroom flats will be delivered by Merlin Housing Society with developer Cotswold Homes. Peter Crouch, Merlin’s development manager, said “We’re delighted to be working with Cotswold Homes to build affordable homes in the area. Houses for families are in short supply, as are one-bed properties for those being hit by bedroom tax. “We hope this development will help ease demand for these types of properties in this area. “Two of the houses will be available for shared ownership, giving first time buyers an opportunity own 40 per cent of their own home and get a foot on the property ladder.” The development is due for completion in 2015 and the homes will be available through Homechoice. Merlin Housing Society has signed a contract to deliver eleven much needed affordable homes in Downend. The housing association is aiming to build more than 200 new homes within a 20 mile radius of its Chipping Sodbury HQ within the next two years. The National Housing Federation estimates that house prices could increase by 37 per cent in the Bristol area by 2020. Rental prices could rise by 43 per cent.

Jo is Labour’s choice for Kingswood LABOUR’s new candidate to contest the Kingswood parliamentary seat at the general election in May 2015 has lost no time in getting out on the streets to listen to voters’ views. Jo McCarron was selected last month to challenge sitting Conservative MP Chris Skidmore in the marginal constituency, which includes Staple Hill, Mangotsfield and Emersons Green. The party’s original choice, Josie Channer, stood down in October after it emerged she owed more than £2,000 in parking fines and late payment fees in Barking and Dagenham, where she is a councillor. This created an opening for Ms McCarron, who had narrowly missed out on selection for other seats in the South West. “I nearly went for Kingswood first time round, so when this came up it felt it was a bit fated.” Ms McCarron said she was delighted to have the chance to seek to represent the area where she grew up.

“I went to school in Hanham. My family and friends still live there. I know the territory and that will be an advantage. I think people like a local candidate,” she said. Ms McCarron now lives on the outskirts of Bath with her husband and two sons and works as an artist. She came into politics after many years as a community campaigner. “I am not a career politician,” she said. “But I have always been someone people have ended up turning to for advice and help – and that is what an MP should be, someone who listens to people in the community.” The biggest issue raised by people on the doorstep, she said, was the cost of living. She attended the opening of the Juice foodbank in Cadbury Heath in December and hosted a visit to the area by the Shadow Energy Secretary Caroline Flint. “I find it shocking that people are in a position where they have to rely on handouts for food,”

13

Jo McCarron, left, prospective Labour candidate, with Caroline Flint said Ms McCarron. “Many of them are in work but are struggling because of rising food and fuel prices and stagnating wages. I have seen people struggle and I feel passionately that I want to get out there and help.” “Soaring energy bills are one of the main reasons people are

finding it harder and harder to make ends meet. Labour’s price freeze would save money for over 36,000 households in Kingswood and I’m going to be working hard over the next 17 months to deliver that message. People here deserve more than the deal they are getting at the moment.”

Lights fight continues A CAMPAIGN to keep South Gloucestershire’s street lights on is gaining momentum. At the time Downend Voice went to print, a total of 1,665 had signed an e-petition calling on the council to keep street lights on during the evening. If the petition gains 2,500 signatures, South Gloucestershire Council will be forced to debate this issue with councillors and residents. The introduction of part-time lighting started in Mangotsfield in May, Emersons Green in June and most of Staple Hill and Downend in July. The council says the scheme will save money and cut emissions. The streets lights operate on a ‘solar clock’ system and should go off between 11.45pm and 12.15am but many have been going off as early as 10.30pm. The council has blamed the problem on a batch of faulty sensors along with the lights adjusting to the end of British Summer Time.

Celebrations after 20 years of forum CELEBRATIONS to mark the 20th anniversary of an organisation set up to meet the needs of older people proved it’s not just the young who know how to enjoy themselves. South Gloucestershire Over Fifties Forum was set up in 1993 and now boasts more than 4,500 members. Guest of honour at the group’s birthday party, held at the Resound Centre in Mangotsfield, was councillor Ian Boulton, chairman of South Gloucestershire Council. Cllr Boulton, who represents the ward of Staple Hill, cut a special birthday cake, declaring that celebrations were underway. He greeted more than 100 forum members who were present at the event, which also featured a town crier and live music. Cllr Boulton said: “It was a pleasure to be able to join the South Gloucestershire Over Fifties Forum for their birthday celebrations. The forum holds regular information days around the district with a range of guest speakers and provides an important platform for its members to have a say about the things that are important to them. These events are also a great opportunity to meet people and enjoy a social gathering.” Further parties were held at community centres in Hanham and Filton. The South Gloucestershire Over Fifties Forum aims to improve the lot of older people in the district. The organisation holds regular meetings within

South Gloucestershire, with speakers on a wide range of subjects relevant to the needs of older people. The next event on the forum’s calendar will take place on Tuesday January 21 at Warmley Community Centre where guests will hear from speakers from South Gloucestershire Council’s transport team. follow us on Twitter @downendvoice downendvoice 15 Residents urged to give views over future use of park

E: news@downendvoice.co.uk

VIEWS are being sought on the future of a parcel of green land in Downend. Hill House Park, off Hill House Road, had been used by Downend Lower School as a playing field. But the school closed in September 2005 when it amalgamated with the upper school in Westerleigh Road. Due to a 10-year rule which prevents any change of use of exschool playing fields the land has not been developed. But, with just a few years to go before the covenant runs out, residents are being asked what they would like to see in the park. Although the land, which is behind the new Willow Surgery, is owned by South Gloucestershire Council, Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council has been liaising with the authority over its future. They are looking to establish a Friends of Hill House Park group and so far two initial meetings have been held to drum up support. An official Friends group would also be able to apply for funding to protect and improve the space. So far suggestions from residents have included a community orchard, allotments,

www.downendvoice.co.uk

A new gate and sign has been put up at the entrance to the park play area, dog walking space and a football destination for youngsters. Others say they would like to see the land left as it is. The land is open to the public and is mainly used by dog walkers and people seeking out a quiet place to sit. The parish council has installed a new gate, seat and sign as well as planting a line of trees which will replace the existing trees when they become old and diseased. Angela Hocking, clerk of

Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council, said: “We’ve had quite a lot of interest from local residents who want to have their say on how the land can be used. “There’s legal protection on the land which prevents it being used for anything other than a school playing field for 10 years after the school closed. “There’s only two years of the protection left to run so after that it’s possible to apply for a change of use. The intention of South Gloucestershire Council has always been that it remains as a

public open space. “There is money available from South Gloucestershire Council which was provided by the developers of the new dwellings on the school site to use specifically at the site and for the benefit of local residents. “Although nothing can be done yet, we are using this time to start up a Friends’ group and to hear people’s input as to how the land could be used. “All sorts of suggestions have been put forward so far so it’s a case of deciding the best way forward. Any suggestions that go forward would involve a lot of consultation. The Friends of Hill House Park is looking to form officially with a formal constitution in the New Year. To find out more about the Friends of Hill House Park, please contact Angela Hocking, clerk to the council, on 956 7001, email clerk@ dbhparishcouncil.co.uk or visit Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council’s website www. downendbromleyheath.org

I wish and pray that 2014 brings you renewed hope The new year brings new possibilities and opportunities. At the Baptist Church we have begun the new year by asking our congregation to express their hopes and dreams for 2014 in the shape of a banner, made up of each individual’s and family’s hopes in a pictorial format. Some of these hopes relate to world events, hope for peace in Syria, where so many have been left without hope by the bitter civil war; some of these hopes are individual, for restored health, for new job opportunities, for a deeper relationship with Jesus; some are for our church, where we hope that next year will bring to completion a long standing project to build a new hall, which will be used not just by the church, but also by local community groups. What do we base our hopes on? Are they simply wishful thinking? Sadly some of you reading this will have unfulfilled hopes, or even lack hope altogether because of the difficulties you have encountered in your life, and so hope is almost extinguished for you.

For me, hope is not simply wishful thinking; it is based on the reality of a living faith in God, who promises to be with me through all the difficulties I encounter. As a follower of Jesus, I am not immune from life’s vicissitudes; in fact, as a Christian minister, I am often confronted with these on a weekly basis as I try to care for the folk in our congregation. My hope is based on the fact that Jesus, as God’s Son came to earth, died, and was raised to life to give everyone the possibility of a living relationship with Him now and into eternity. One of my favourite songs, written by one of our most popular modern Christian songwriters, Stuart Townend sums up this hope: There is a hope that burns within my heart, That gives me strength for every passing day; A glimpse of glory now revealed in meagre part, Yet drives all doubt away: I stand in Christ, with sins forgiven; And Christ in me, the hope of heaven! My highest calling and my deepest joy, To make His will my home. May you experience renewed hope this year, whatever your circumstances.

Andy rubs shoulders with royalty at awards ceremony

WITH DEBBIE GRIFFIN PERSONAL FITNESS

A ROYAL Navy reservist from Mangotsfield mingled with royalty and top politicians at a glittering ceremony in London recognising the country’s military heroes. Leading Seaman Andy Westlake was inspired to join the Armed Forces after reading his grandfather’s diary which revealed his exploits during the Second World War. Andy, 45, joined Bristol-based reservist unit HMS Flying Fox 10 years ago and is now undertaking tasks usually fulfilled by a man two ranks above him. The weapons specialist rubbed shoulders with The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall as well as Prime Minister David Cameron when he attended the Sun Military Awards in December at the National Maritime Museum. Before the ceremony all nominees were invited to 10 Downing Street where they toured the building and chatted to Mr Cameron. Andy, who is married with three children and two step-children, was one of three reservists nominated for an award. Although the accolade of Best Reservist went to Lance Corporal Keith Mallon of the

Royal Yeomanry, Andy said it was a great honour to receive a nomination. “I am completely honoured to have been considered for the award. “My wife Michelle and I both had the chance to speak to Prince Charles, which was lovely. He is a great supporter of the Reserve service, as is David Cameron who presented the award of Best Reservist. “We had a lovely time at the ceremony and it’s great the commitment of the Reserves is being recognised so highly. “I’d like to say a big thank you to my family because I couldn’t do this without their support.” Andy, whose everyday job is a quantity surveyor for Cowlin Construction, has proven skills with a variety of weapons and now instructs others in how to use them. He is also one of few reservists qualified to drive the Navy’s fast rigid inflatable boats. Andy recently returned from a 12-month tour of duty as a coxswain in the Gibraltar Squadron. HMS Flying Fox is recruiting. To find out more call 0845 6003222.

Avenue Veterinary Providing a Personal, Caring Ltd and Centre Compassionate Service Pendennis Avenue, Staple Hill, Bristol BS16 5DW Tel. 0117 956 9038

Looking forwardAvenue to aVeterinary Centre Ltd fresh start for 2014 I am sure that many of us will want to make a fresh start to 2014, perhaps with a New Year’s resolution or two. Many of us (especially after an overindulgent Christmas!) will resolve to try and lose a few pounds by eating a bit more healthily, and perhaps trying to do a bit more exercise. Perhaps you are reading this thinking about your pet, and feeling that they might need to join you in the New Year dieting? As with humans, obesity in dogs and cats is becoming more and more common. Overweight pets can suffer from very similar problems to obese people, such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. If you are concerned about your pet, we can advise you on the best way to help to slim those waist lines. And the good news — the quality of life improves when obese pets lose weight! The first line to helping pets lose weight is to ensure that your pet gets regular exercise, and a healthy balanced diet. And zero tolerance on treats! Sometimes we need to start pets on a special diet to help them in the right direction, and of course there are also some medical conditions that

Pendennis Avenue, Staple Hill, Bristol BS16 5DW Tel: 0117 956 9038 Fax: 0117 970 2077 www.avenue-vets.com can result in obesity. If you have any concerns about your pet, please ring the practice and we can give you more information about our weight clinics. If mentioning the above diseases leaves you concerned about the cost of potential treatment for your pet, have you thought about pet insurance? It may surprise you that many vets and vet nurses insure their own pets. This is because when something does go wrong, we all want the very best treatment for our animals. And as there is no NHS treatment for pets, the treatment for our animals can be costly. When looking at insurance, it is important to know the details of your policy, as there A YOUNG bookworm has become the first to win a gold certificate are many different types from Emersons Green Library. available. We would advise that you take out a policy Owen Meachin, who is five, has been visiting the library regularly that covers a condition for with his mum Victoria since he was tiny and for the past two years he life. If your dog gets hit “The Bookstart stamps are a good incentive to keep going with by a car and needs specialist reading. Every month, we very sadly deal with clients who thought that they were adequately covered only to find that they are not. So, if you already have insurance Providing a Personal, Caring in place, now is a good time to check your policy and the and Compassionate Service cover that it provides. Interest high in former station with its own locomotive THE former Mangotsfield North station is up for sale – and the Victorian property fittingly comes with its own steam locomotive. The house at Shortwood is on the old Midland Line, alongside what is now the Mangotsfield to Yate cycle path. Built in 1844, it originally served as the toll house for the Dramway, which carried coal from Coalpit Heath to barges on the River Avon. Passenger trains followed, but ceased after the railway was axed in the Beeching cuts in the 1960s. The former station was renovated in 1998 and its new owners developed the historical theme by buying the 1904 standard gauge train and a goods van, as well as other rail paraphernalia such as white fencing, track signals and signs. There is also a red telephone box.

Many period features have been retained in the Grade II Listed property, which agents David James and Partners describe as “steeped in history”. The four-bedroomed Old Station Cottage did not reach its reserve price at auction last month but Paul Lawrence, from the agents, said interest was high. The property has a guide price of £550,000.

Local eating and dining a pleasure at the Acorn When it comes to eating out, it’s so good to find a venue where dining experiences are so enjoyable and a pleasure. The discovery of the Acorn Cafe Restaurant came with great surprise. It is becoming a favourite haunt for snacks, morning coffee,

breakfasts and lunches. What makes it so enjoyable is that the snacks, breakfasts and lunches are freshly cooked, with the assurance that ingredients are also fresh from local suppliers. The home baked cakes are truly home baked and fresh and just like Mother used to make. The word is spreading that traditional morning breakfasts are more of a treat than a necessity, again with fresh and local produce. Sunday lunches come as no surprise for quality and enjoyment in this family owned and run in this unassuming location on the Westerleigh Road. New initiative needs volunteers COULD you play a vital role in helping Avon Fire & Rescue save lives? The fire service is looking to recruit Community Champion Volunteers to promote the benefits of having a home safety check. The checks, carried out by AF&RS, are free of charge and involve firefighters visiting people at home to discuss fire safety issues specific to their property and fitting free smoke alarms where required. Community Champion Volunteers will be asked to spend around eight hours a month talking to local groups about the benefits of a home fire safety visit and encouraging people to sign up. Referrals will be passed to AF&RS and home visits arranged. The new initiative is being run in partnership with The Care Forum and the South Gloucestershire Volunteer Centre Partnership Mick Dixon, AF&RS assistant chief fire officer, said volunteers will be providing a valuable service to local people by helping to increase fire safety awareness and prevent accidental fires. “We are keen to spread the fire safety message across our local communities and have developed the Community Champion Volunteer scheme as a way to ensure we can reach those most in need,” he said. “Community Champion volunteers have an important role to play in preventing fires and potentially saving lives.” Volunteers are now being recruited through the South Gloucestershire Volunteer Centre Partnership. No qualifications or previous experience is needed and full training, a uniform and support will be given. Volunteers will have the opportunity to gain new skills, meet a wide range of people and make a positive contribution to people’s safety. School Christmas concert hits just the right note MUSICAL talent at Downend School was on show for the annual Christmas concert. The event, in front of a packed house of close to 300 people, raised more than £300 towards the British Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal. More than 100 students took part, with performances by the school samba band, guitar duets, the concert band and the brass ensemble. Parents also had an opportunity to purchase the Year 7 Christmas CD The Angel Gabriel. As well as musical items thoughts were also directed to those who have served or will be serving in the armed forces over the Christmas period with a reading of A Carol from Flanders by Fredrick Niven (1878 - 1944). William Roberts, the head teacher, delivered a Christmas reading as did Ms Szwaba and Miss Kaur from the English department. The finale was a mass performance, including all

Melvin Burgess, the writer of the 1996 best-seller Junk, about teenage runaways who fall in with a crowd of drugs addicts on the streets of Bristol, spoke to Post-16 students about his work. Junk won the the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian children’s fiction prize but was also criticised for its graphic subject matter. Melvin spent much of his 20s living in Bristol and now lives in Yorkshire. He has written many books for children and young adults. Downend School deputy head Mark Fuller said the visit was part of the school’s commitment to improving the reading ability and widening the reading experiences of its older students. Everyone in the school is taking part in the Get Downend Reading initiative from this month. Students will bring books to school weekly for Reading Thursdays, a regular time dedicated to reading books for pleasure.

Air raid shelter discovery THE discovery of an air raid shelter beneath a school playground came as a surprise to many – but not to volunteer reading helper David Weeks. Mr Weeks, a retired Methodist minister who lives in Downend, attended Two Mile Hill Primary in Kingswood during the war and remembers very well taking refuge in the underground bunker. He and his classmates used to go down into the shelter during the Blitz on Bristol more than 70 years ago. “We would sing songs, listen to stories and recite our times tables,” said Mr Weeks. “Sometimes there were active air raids and sometimes false alarms.” The shelter was uncovered by builders preparing to construct an extension to the school. Staff were aware there had been an air raid shelter on the junior playground but had not known about the one under the infant playground, down some steps next to an old caretaker's cottage. Mr Weeks, 78, got the chance to go into the narrow shelter – and said it was just as he remembered it, when the the children would sit on benches on either side of narrow corridors. Present-day pupils asked him if the experience

in the 1940s had been scary, but Mr Weeks said he had not been frightened. “I was four when the war started, so it was just the way things were for me. All my childhood memories are of wartime. It is a credit to our parents that they somehow lived through it in such a way that we were not scared, although there were frightening things going on,” he said. “I remember going into Bristol and seeing the bombed-out buildings – and collecting shrapnel.” The shelter is being filled in so that construction work can be completed, but thanks to Mr Weeks passing on his story to 21st century children, it will not be forgotten. Mr Weeks was a minister in Leeds and Devon before returning to his home area on retirement. He now lives in Cleevewood Road and has been listening to children read at his old school every week for about 12 years.

Sainsbury’s food for thought SENIOR citizens in Emersons Green will benefit from a £250 donation towards a nosh up. Sainsbury’s handed over the money to Emersons Green Village Hall where it will be used to towards the cost of a lunch. The cash was given as part of the store’s community budget scheme which helps charitable groups in the community. The money has been raised through sales of ‘Bags for Life’. Paul Robertson, Sainsbury’s Emersons Green store manager, said: “Our store is at the heart of the local community and it is important that we can do as much as we can to support it. When we heard about Emersons Green Village Hall, we were really pleased to be able to help out.” Last year the community budget scheme provided £135,000 worth of donations, nominated by depot and store managers and colleagues from stores nationwide.

Crowds celebrate Christmas THESE were some of the scenes as people living in Downend, Bromley Heath and Staple Hill celebrated Christmas. Crowds flocked to the Bromley Bear light switchon in Downend and the ever-popular Christmas on the Hill in Staple Hill. Shops in Cleeve Wood hosted their own celebrations and a choir from Bromley Heath Infants School sang out to mark the start of the Christmas season.

Work underway on new health centre PATIENTS of Leap Valley Surgery will finally be able to visit their doctors in a new medical centre later this year. Work began before Christmas on the £3.1million 21st century development in Beaufort Road and is due to be completed by November. The doctors have been working with the developers, Kitto Construction, for more than 12 years to find a suitable site to replace their cramped surgery in two 1950s semis in Fouracre Road. The plot of land is large enough for the centre and ample parking, with space left over for nine two-bedroomed flats. Leap Valley Surgery provides for 10,500 patients in Downend and Emersons Green. It has seven GPs and 24 staff. Dr Caroline Jones, who was a patient at the present surgery when she was a baby and returned 18 years ago to look after the community, said: “The new surgery is going to be so much better for patients. “We met with local residents and we have been involved with

the plans all the way. It’s been a 12-year process to get to this stage and we are delighted to see building begin.” Practice manager Helen Holbrook added: “It’s a real morale-booster for the community and we are looking forward to opening the doors on this exciting building.” The two-storey building will have an L- shaped wing with pharmacy on the ground floor, entrance lobby with patient check-in, information points, adults and children’s waiting areas, reception and toilets. The ground floor medical suite comprises 10 doctor consulting rooms, two treatment rooms and a minor operations surgery, together with associated utility and storage rooms. Staircases and a lift provides access to an upper consulting suite along with a meeting and training room, staff rest room and kitchen, offices, community nursing and health visitor team rooms, IT room, stores, toilets and shower room. There will be on-site parking

for 40 cars, new pedestrian-friendly access and landscaped grounds. The surgery will be super-insulated to highest heat-saving standards with gas fired under-floor heating, comfort cooling to communications room as well as data, telecom, CCTV security, access controls and patient call system.

The GP partners will lease the new property over 21 years and funding was agreed with a specialist primary healthcare investment company to own the building.

Hungover drivers ‘as bad as drunks’ HOW did you ring in the New Year? Did alcohol play any part of your celebrations? Bit of a headache the next day? Most of us don’t feel our best the day after a drinking session but would that stop you going about your usual business? According to new research it should do as a hangover following a night of heavy drinking can impair driving performance as much as driving under the influence of alcohol. That’s the conclusion drawn by associate professor Chris Alford of the University of the West of England and assistant professor Joris Verster of Utrecht University. They recommend that drivers should be warned that the effects of heavy drinking last longer than a measurable blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and that hangover immunity is largely a myth. In professor Alford’s UK study, people who had been drinking the night before undertook a 20-minute

downendvoice

simulation of driving in a mixed urban and rural setting with hazards such as pedestrians, representing a typical commute to work. Significant increases in speed variability, reaction time, driving errors and deviation from driving position were recorded when the participants were hung-over. The tests were performed after the participants’ BAC had returned to zero, although their level of driving impairment was similar to being over the alcohol limit for driving in Holland. The types of hangover symptoms people experience include thirst and dehydration, drowsiness and fatigue, headache and problems concentrating. While some people claim to be immune to developing a hangover, a Canadian study of almost 800 university students suggests that the vast majority of drinkers are susceptible and the impact is largely related to the degree of alcohol intoxication.

Artist zooms to success ELOISE Turner graduated from Falmouth University last summer and was one of just 20 photographers selected from a nationwide entry for an exhibition in London. Her work was on display at the first Zealous X show, a fourday event in the iconic OXO Tower Wharf on London’s South Bank celebrating UK creative talent. It showcased the work of 100 artists across the disciplines of photography, art, film, music and performance, selected by an independent panel of industry judges. Eloise, from Mangotsfield, had two of her projects shortlisted, with her series ‘untitled’ - a diverse look at fashion advertising, selected as one of the final 20 photographic entries. Since gaining her photography degree, Eloise has been splitting her time between Bristol and London, shooting events for Bookman Greene Event Management, working at the London School of Modelling , and pursuing commercial and private commissions. Eloise said: “This exhibition was a really exciting opportunity to show my work to the public at a prestigious event. It gives me great confidence for the future that from the hundreds of submissions my work was appreciated by industry professionals” Eloise can be contacted via her website, where you can also see samples of her work. www.eloiseturnerphotography.co.uk

Adult Non-Fiction

A Short History of England by Simon Jenkins

This is the story of England from the invaders of the dark ages around 410 AD to the coalition government of today. All the key events that are familiar from school history lessons are there William the Conqueror, the Tudors, the two World Wars along with more unfamiliar historical events through the ages. The book is full of interesting facts and snippets of information whilst also providing historical insight in to the origins of the English language. For example, did you know that kith and kin is an AngloSaxon phrase? Also, you may not know that the Riot Act is not just a saying but was real legislation. The book pulls together fragments of English history in an entertaining and detailed manner. It may surprise you to learn that England’s first Cathedral at Canterbury dates back to 602 AD. I was also interested to read that modern English took root in the reign of Elizabeth I which is why we can read Shakespeare but struggle with Chaucer which is written in Middle English. My favourite facts relate to that English hero, Richard the Lionheart , who was a French speaker with very little grasp of English and was hardly in England at all during his reign. The book is written in a fast paced

narrative style that keeps you eager to find out what happens next. I think this is a great book with an overview of the last 1600 years of English history and as a non-historian I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading it. Review by Gill Adult Fiction

Me Before You

Working in the library, I had encountered more than a few customers bowled over with enthusiasm for the author Jojo Moyes so when the chance arose to read one of her books for our reading group I was very intrigued. The book is essentially a love story but not of the ordinary kind. Lou is a drifter, made redundant from a café, she has little confidence in herself and her abilities. With jobs thin on the ground she accepts a job caring for Will, a quadriplegic man. Before his accident, Will had it all – a brilliant city career, good looks, an aristocratic background and a very active lifestyle. Whilst this may not sound like a recipe for either romance or humour, Jojo Moyes achieves both and conveys with great realism the friendship that develops between carer and patient. Gradually we see that not only is Lou brightening Will’s life but he in turn is getting her to look at her own past and her reluctance to embrace life outside of her own small town. Humour pervades the book with a beautiful lightness of touch and at times the jokes are absolutely priceless. Lou’s online discussions with other quadriplegics give them a chance to convey their own sense of fun. The book also conveys the stark reality of life in a wheelchair as well as presenting a debate on euthanasia. With chapters dedicated to the viewpoints of different characters, we are able to see how they respond in various different ways. Jojo Moyes deals

by Cassandra Clare

Fifteen year old Clary Fray’s life changes forever the night that she and her best friend Simon go to the Pandemonium Club in New York City. In a store room at the back of the club, Clary witnesses the murder of a striking blue haired, green eyed boy by three teenagers covered in strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary wants to call the police but it seems the assailants are invisible to everyone else and the body vanishes into thin air leaving no trace, not even a smear of blood. Things only get worse when Clary’s mother disappears and she finds a hideous creature in her house bent on eating her. This is Clary’s introduction to demons and to the Shadowhunters who are warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. But why would demons suddenly be interested in mundanes like Clary and her mother….? This is the first book in the Mortal Instruments series. If you like the sound of Twilight combined with Hunger Games then meeting Harry Potter you will love this book. It is an addictive page turner with a plot full of twists and turns, supernatural characters, humour and of course forbidden love. Very easy to get into, read a couple of pages and you will be hooked! Review by Gill Any of the books reviewed may be reserved at Downend library free of charge.

January, 2014

E: news@downendvoice.co.uk

A CONVINCING win against league leaders Merthyr Town sent Mangotsfield into Christmas full of good cheer. The 4-0 victory at The Glass Consultants UK Stadium at Cossham Street on December 21 left them in fifth place in the Calor League Division One South and West. Supporters were encouraged to wear Christmas hats and

www.downendvoice.co.uk

jumpers to enter into the spirit of the festive season. Goals from Lewis Powell, new signing Aron Robbins, and two from Luke Ballinger sealed the points and gave them and their fans high hopes for the new year. The win followed a mixed run that saw Mangotsfield take five points from four games, with draws at Thatcham (1-1) and Didcot (2-2), and a 1-0 home win

against Cinderford Town but a 1-2 home defeat to Yate Town. Attacking midfielder Kyle Tooze has been released by the club and has signed for Bridgwater Town. This brings to an end his third spell at Mangotsfield during which he made a total of 110 starts with 30 off the bench and scored 22 goals. Robbins, 24, has signed for

Mangotsfield from Bridgwater. He can play anywhere on the left and is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Tooze. Mangotsfield United Supporters’ Club Player Of The Month award for November was presented to central midfielder Jamie Reid Details courtesy of mufconline.co.uk

Cleve look to get back to winning ways CLEVE RFC start the year in second place in the Tribute South West One West league and will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they visit Wadebridge Camels on January 4. Their last win was on their travels, when they went to Sidmouth and came out winers by 20 points to 14. But the last two games at The Hayfields have ended in defeat – 13-28 to Chard on November 30 and the narrow margin of 17-18 versus Thornbury on December 14. The match against the local rivals was played in a fierce gale and Cleve battled back from 0-18 down but could not quite make it to victory.

Olly will also be training a group of Ugandans to become official cricket coaches, with the aim of building a cricketing legacy in the country. He said: “Cricket Without Boundaries does some fantastic work in Africa and I am proud to be able to join them next spring. “I got the fundraising idea from a group of football fans who covered all 92 football grounds in 92 hours and thought, why not try and do the same but with cricket grounds?" He began at the Gloucestershire County Ground in Nevil Road, Bristol, before going on to Glamorgan and Worcestershire. The final stop was Somerset Country Cricket Club. At each ground, Olly went behind the scenes with some of the players. He plans to also auction off prizes donated by the county cricket clubs along the way. Cleve girls continue to shine

EIGHTEEN players from Cleve Girls Rugby are now playing at county level as the club continues to develop a reputation for producing rugby talent. Cleve Girls Rugby was formed in September 2009 by then junior chairman Paul Malorie, plus original head coach Sara Harding. Initially all the players were from non playing backgrounds but they soon developed the basic skills necessary to compete in games in and around the Gloucestershire area. Through the success of the squad and new girls coming in from other clubs, they soon developed a group of players Cleve RFC could be proud of. By the 2010/11 season Cleve Girls Rugby players were representing Gloucestershire at county level, with one of these players going on to represent the South West. During this time there was a change of management and coaching staff with Nick Humphreys taking the position of manager plus Charlie Taylor, Andy Leonard and Mark Escott heading up the coaching. The 2011/12 season saw a lot of girls come through from boys rugby which consequently led to more success on the playing field. More players were representing Gloucestershire with a couple more going on to represent the South West. By 2012/13 there was another change in the coaching setup after RFU community rugby coach Simon Clarke came to Cleve for a meeting and then subsequently agreed to come on board as U15s head coach. This season also saw Cleve Girls Rugby enter the RFU Thames Valley U15s Girls league. The squad were now playing some really good rugby, only losing

twice to Worcester Girls in the league and winning all their friendly fixtures. There was huge success on the county rugby front with twelve girls representing either Gloucestershire or Somerset and four girls going on the represent the South West. Due to popular demand, the 2012/13 season saw the introduction of an U18s squad. Now running both an U15s and an U18s squad, Cleve decided to revert back to playing friendly fixtures rather than entering the leagues. This season also saw ten of our U15s and eight U18s represent at county level. On Sunday November 24, Cleve Girls Rugby players represented both Gloucestershire and Somerset at county level, with Gloucestershire travelling to Witney to play Oxfordshire and Somerset making the long

trip down to St Austell to play Cornwall. The Gloucestershire U15s won their game 27 – 0 with Cleve’s Rhianne Oakley, Holly Cunningham and Mya Humphreys (captain) playing huge roles in the result whilst the Gloucestershire U18s managed to beat their opposition 27 – 22 in a really tough game with Cleve’s Milly Wallis bagging two of the tries. The Somerset U15s managed a win of 39 points to nil with Cleve players Eloise Linton, Florence Long, Georgia Young, Iona Antwis, Chants Thompson and Milly O’Donnell (captain). Somerset U18s weren’t as fortunate, losing to a powerful Cornwall side 22 points to 12 with Cleve’s Clare Gordon, Ellie Mulhearn, Kirsty Horner, Isabel Wildgoose, Maddy Escott (player of the match), Mollie Rideout

and Tara Prudhoe all putting in the work to keep Somerset in the game. Women’s and girls’ rugby isn’t like the men’s and boys’ game. The game is far less physical and there seems to be more attention to skill and finesse rather than brute force. Rugby is an inclusive sport that teaches its followers skills and core values - Team Work, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportmanship which all players can go on to use later in life. Cleve Girls Rugby caters for U13/15/18 girls from school Years 5 to 13. Training is held every Tuesday evening at 6.30pm at Cleve RFC, Cossham Street, Mangotsfield. Andy makes muddy debut A TEXT message out of the blue read ‘I’ve been loaned a car for the Allen Trial. Can you navigate?’. Andy Laurence from Downend normally sticks to tarmac motorsport but this message from a friend sounded like a good excuse to try something new. The trial is based in the hills around Bristol, starting and finishing at The Bull in Hinton. A number of muddy roads provide the difficulty with a bit of navigation to get from one to the next as the hills are spread from Hinton to Chew Valley Lake. The first muddy hill was up the side of Tog Hill. Neither driver nor navigator had driven off-road before and the ability of a road car to drive up a steep muddy lane surprised both. More muddy hills came and went with surprising ease until the arrival at Ubley Wood. The sections there were on a muddy

hillside, rather than rock-laced muddy lanes. Without the purchase of the rock, the success of the morning turned to desperate wheelspin. Andy was forced to bounce vigorously in the passenger seat to gain traction, but despite the sweat and the cheers from spectators, the efforts were futile. Two unascended hills brought disappointment and any chance of a good finish evaporated with the penalty points gained. After a stop for lunch, competitors headed off to the final few hills, finishing at an infamous hill named ‘John Walker’. This hill starts with a downward section, passes through a river and up a heavily rutted track that starts off rocky and ends up very muddy. The technique is to tickle the car up the rocky section and then give it beans up the muddy part later on where big bumps play a part. A

big crest half way up means those who wish to can get airborne. At the top of the hill, Dave stopped the car and the two reflected on what had been a brilliant day out. The event was run by Bristol Motor Club which meets on the first Tuesday of every month. Find out more at www.bristolmc.org. uk
