ACADEMIC POLICIES C O URS E S ELEC TIO N PR O C ESS

Course selection for each school year begins shortly after the beginning of the second semester, typically in February or March. Students receive information regarding requirements, elective opportunities, and registration procedures. Student placement depends on academic history, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, and departmental review. Students receive an approved, preliminary course list during the month of May. Students receive their final schedule with teacher assignments in late summer. Student and/or parent-initiated schedule change requests are allowed during specific times of the school year. If approved, these requests are assessed a change fee of $50 as noted on the sched ule change form. Additional fees for book licenses may be assessed as noted on the schedule change form. Requests to change a course selected during the scheduling season for the upcoming school year are permitted through the first week of classes. After the first week of school, course change requests are permitted (only for second-semester courses) through the first week of the second term. All schedule change forms require a student, parent, teacher, and counselor signature. Depending on the nature of the change, signatures from the department chairperson and the student’s teacher for that subject may be required. Requ ests for changes based solely on a change of teacher are not permitted. Schedule change request forms are available in the Advising office. This policy is subject to change.

C O URS E CRE D IT PO LIC IES

The minimum number of courses required for each student is seven (7) per semester. Grades earned for courses beyond seven (7) must appear on the report card. Any student who received a semester grade of F at either the end of the first or the second semesters is expected to attend Spring School or Summer School. The stude nt must earn the missing credits before the student may enroll for the subsequent school year.

C L AS S RAN K , G R A D E PO IN T A VE R AGE , AND HONOR R OL L CLASS RANK Class rank is based on the cumulative weighted Grade Point Average (GPA). GRADE POINT AVERAGE All courses are assigned weights or “Quality Points” according to their challenge and demand. (See Weighted Quality Point Table) The cumulative weighted GPA is determined by dividing the total Quality Points by the total credits attempted in grades nine (9) through twelve (12). Quality points do not affect the amount of credit given per course. It is important to note that one-quarter credit is given for each quarter-credit course, one-half credit is granted for each semester course, and one full credit is granted for each year’s course of successful academic work. HONOR ROLL At the end of each quarter, the honor roll is announced. Students with a weighted GPA of 3.75 to 3.99, along with no grade below a “B,” will receive Second Honors. Students with a weighted GPA of 4.00 and above, along with no grade lower than a “B,” will receive First Honors.

A DOM VIRTUA L SC H O O L

All official online coursework must be completed using ADOM Virtual School or a Cardinal Gibbons High School approved online course. Students must contact the Advising office to receive a co mplete list of available classes. Cardinal Gibbons High School reserves the right to make changes to the curriculum based on availability, as well as state and county directives.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS A CAD EMIC M O N ITO R IN G

Incoming freshmen who are provisionally accepted to Cardinal Gibbons because of low HSPT scores or previous middle school grades are placed on Academic Monitoring for one (1) school year. Students on Academic Monitoring are required to attend Summer School (prior to ninth grade) to improve foundational skills. At the end of the first quarter or any subsequent quarters, students who earn below a 2.35 GPA will be placed on Academic Probation. At the end of each quarter, students will be reevaluated to ensure success. If a student has been provisionally accepted and placed on Academic Monitoring, the student must maintain above a 2.35 GPA and perform academically, or they may be withdrawn from Cardinal Gibbons.

A CAD EMIC PR O B A TIO N

As a college preparatory school, Cardinal Gibbons expects students to complete assignments by their respective deadlines and perform to meet the demands of the rigorous curriculum. Students who earn an unweighted GPA below 2.35 in a quarter are placed on Academic Probation. Academic Probation contracts are assigned, and the program mandates students to attend weekly tutoring and mentoring sessions. Students who do not adhere to the Academic Probation requirements or who are on Academic Probation for three (3) consecutive quarters may be withdrawn from Cardinal Gibbons.

Advanced Placement (AP) classes are an introduction to a college-level curriculum. These courses are as challenging as introductory college courses and are fast-paced, cover more material than Honors classes, and require independent work (e.g., research and analysis). Advanced Placement classes demonstrate to college admissions officers that you’re ready for college-level work. Students t aking an AP class must take the exam to receive AP credit for the course at Cardinal Gibbons. Most AP classes are one (1) full cr edit; therefore, students who are registered for AP are registered for the entire school year. A fee is charged by the College Board for the exam. This fee will be added to your Cardinal Gibbons tuition account.

D UAL ENR O LLM EN T

Cardinal Gibbons has partnered with Barry University (BU) to teach dual enrollment (DE) clas ses on our campus. The Dual Enrollment Program allows high school students to take college-level courses and receive college credit. Cardinal Gibbons teachers teach these courses, and the curriculum meets university criteria. These courses are one (1) semester each. In order to be eligible, students must be juniors or seniors, have a weighted 3.5 GPA, complete a college entrance exam (i.e., SAT, ACT, PERT, etc.), and must also meet course requirements. To remain eligible for future dual enrollment classes, the student must achieve a “B” or higher in each dual enrollment class taken. Please refer to the Course Offerings for the classes that are dual enrollment eligible. The cost for DE is $65.00 per university credit hour. All payments must be made through your Cardinal Gibbons tuition account. To register for a subsequent semester of Dual Enrollment courses, all tuition accounts must be paid in full. Public Florida universities weigh DE and AP courses equally. Grades for DE courses are posted on each student’s university transcript. More information about the DE program is listed on the Cardinal Gibbons school website and t he Barry University DE we bsite.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FOR G IVEN ESS PR O G R A M S

FORGIVENESS RULE As authorized by Section 1003.43 (5) (e) 1, Florida Statutes, Cardinal Gibbons High School has established a policy for course forgiveness. The student should remediate the course for forgi veness within the year it occurs. If a student repeats a course, then the forgiven course is awarded no credit toward the 24 credits required for graduation. Please note that the course credit requirement for graduation will increase each year until th e Class of 2026. The forgiven course must remain on the student’s transcr ipt, but it is not calculated in the student’s grade point average. The opportunity for course forgivene ss must be limited to replacing a semester grade of “D” or “F” with a grade of “C” or higher earned subsequently in the same or comparable course. If a student remediates a college prep or honors level course, then the new grade will be calculated in the grade point average using the standard scale on the weighted quality point table. SUMMER SCHOOL COURSES Each summer, Cardinal Gibbons High School offers an array of half-credit and quarter-credit courses for enrichment o r remedial purposes. If a student takes a half-credit enrichment course during the summer, the grade is not included in the GPA calculated by Cardinal Gibbons; however, they may be included in the GPA calculations made by the colleges, NCAA, and/or the Bright Futures Scholarship program. COURSE TAKEN THROUGH ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS OTHER THAN CGHS A student who wishes to take an elective for credit must have prior approval from the Director of Advising and Assistant Principal for Academics and Curriculum. Note that the course name, credit, and grade are recorded on the student’s transcript. Although the grade is not included in the GPA calculated by Cardinal Gibbons, it may be included in the GPA calculations made by the colleges, NCAA, and/or the Bright Futures Scholarship program. Any student who takes a dual enrollment course through Barry University must maintain an average of at least a “B.”

COLLEGE PLANNING CO LL EG E PL A NNING && AADVISING DV IS ING COLLEG E P LA N N IN G & A D V IS I NG

Advisors meet with freshmen to develop their Four Year Plan and introduce them to Naviance and how to begin the ir college resume. They meet during each student’s sophomore year to review and make any needed adjustments to the plan. All juniors are encouraged to schedule individual college planning meetings with their advisor beginning in January. Parents are urged to attend. The senior college application process begins in August; however, students can request college planning meetings as often as needed with their advisor. Throughout the year, the Advising office provides workshops for parents and students on topics regarding the college application process and financial aid. Participation in these informative sessions can make the planning process easier. During the fall semester, many college representatives visit Cardinal Gibbons to discuss the school’s programs with students. Students sign up for college visits through their Naviance account. Students are responsible for completing their resumes on Naviance for the faculty to complete recommendation letters for college applications. It is imperative that all information be provided in a timely manner. Additional college application information can be found in the Cardinal Gibbons College Handbook, which is given to juniors during their individual planning meetings. SCHOOL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER: 100469 This CEEB Code should be used on all applications, scholarships, college entrance exams, and SAT and ACT exams, as the school’s designation code.

See the Cardinal Gibbons DE website (www.cghsfl.org/academics/dual-enrollment) for more information. Honors and Advanced Level Course Note: Advanced courses require a greater demand on students through increased academic rigor. Academic rigor is obtained through the application, analysis, evaluation, and creation of complex ideas that are often abstract and multi-faceted. Students are challenged to think and collaborate critically on the content they are learning. Honors level rigor will be achieved by increasing text complexity through text selection, focus on high-level qualitative measures, and complexity of the task. Instruction will be structured to give students a deeper understanding of conceptual themes and organization within and across disciplines. Academic rigor is more than simply assigning a greater quantity of work.
