3 number of interbreeds won once again by Charollais last year. When attending not only the shows but also the NSA events and other Open days, which we as a breed organise, I was very pleased and proud to see the high standard of stock and showmanship on display.

Chairmans Report lthough this past year has been very challenging for us all we can look back and find a lot of things to be positive about. We started the year as usual with another very enjoyable AGM weekend in Wales. A lovely hotel, set in very scenic surroundings plus a very impressive display of sheep, combined with excellent hospitality and entertainment ensured that a great time was had by all.

A

The show season started as usual at the beginning of May and Charollais breeders from all over the country turned out some very fine sheep. The fact that they were prepared and presented to such a high standard was proven by the large

Although prices last year were not always as good as we would have liked averages were up at most of the main sales but with slightly less sheep sold. Can I encourage everyone to support these sales when possible but remember it takes good sheep to sell well. During November last I had the privilege, along with three other members to attend one of the biggest livestock events in the world, namely Eurotier in Hanover, Germany. The two shearling rams which we displayed on our corner of the British Livestock stand caught the attention of a large number of interested people and groups of people from all over the world. Over the four days we were completely bombarded by questions and enquiries from many different sources, all wanting more information about these UK Charollais sheep. This is by far the most exciting prospect I have experienced in almost thirty years of being involved with Charollais and together we must encourage and develop this potential outlet.

As I come to the end of this year and also my report there are a few changes taking place which I would like to record. Firstly our finance Chairman Charles Marwood, who has expertly held this post for some sixteen years has decided to retire. Can I pass on my personal thanks and also thank Charles on behalf of our members for the huge effort and dedication he has given to this job. Thank you Charles! Can I also congratulate our new Finance Chairman, another Charles, this time Charles Sercombe, for agreeing to take on this job. We are also changing two council members this years they have served their six years, namely Meilir Jones from Wales and Jonathan Aiken from Northern Ireland. Many thanks to Meilir and Jonnie and I look forward to welcoming the two new chairmen at the forthcoming AGM. Finally I would like to thank Jonathan, Carroll, Council and all the office staff for their help and support over the past year. I am sure when we all get familiar with the new Grassroots system for birth notifications, pedigrees etc we will find it to be a very efficient improvement. I will finish by wishing everyone involved in the breed a successful year ahead.

5 produce high quality lambs and all the different management systems, whether extensive or more intensively grazed throughout the UK’s geography.

CEO’s Report The sheep industry in the UK is on the up, with huge potential within the world scene, not only for sheep meat but also breeding stock.

T

Charollais plays an important part in the industry and its place is assured. The increased interest in starting and growing established flocks is great to see. Our sheep meat and the way we produce our products is highly revered around the world. There are numerous ways in which Charollais rams are included in this picture, through the multitude of breeds and crosses that Charollais serves to

It is said that Charollais are the best terminal sire for use on ewe lambs and their first lambs right through to cast ewes, taking those last few crops; all because of the easy lambing from the characteristic shape of our breed. The butchers love them because of that extra chop! And eating experience, which brings their customers back for more. As breeders we are praised because of the way our breed has improved and continues to do so. These comments do not apply simply to these shores but across the world. In New Zealand it is already being said that Charollais are the final step to an ideal lamb. The demand continues across the world and as soon as the veterinary import barriers are removed, Charollais will be found in many more countries.

finished product seems to be ok, no reason to keep anything but the best for breeding and selling on. My thanks go to all who have contributed to this year book and our appreciation also to Meilir Jones and Jonathan Aiken who retire as regional chairmen and board members after 6 years apiece. Both have been invaluable locally and nationally to our organisation. A special thank-you to Charles Marwood as our Chairman of the Finance and General Purposes Committee for a marathon of 16 years service. We have had some great years and hopefully there will be many more to follow. The commitment that Charles has made to the Charollais breed and the Society has been tremendous right from the time that he a Valerie began the Foulrice Flock, to his retirement from this official position. It is with great pleasure that the Society has presented him with the Terry Robinson Award in 2015.

Loosebeare Charollais Rams enjoy the Devon sunshine. The Quicks decided about ten years ago that the Texel Flock had reached its maximum size. “We had been highly successful with the breed but just felt that another string to our bow, would be a wise move. We had looked at different breeds and felt that the Charollais was an improving breed and we should try them.”

Loosebeare Charollais Carroll Barber reports on the Quick Family’s Livestock enterprises he Loosebeare name is synonymous with top quality pedigree and commercial livestock. On their four farms near Crediton in Devon, the Quick family of father Bill, brothers Paul, Andrew and Mark and Andrew’s son Edward work as a team on the renowned Limousin herd, Texel and Charollais flocks as well as commercial cattle and a 1,200 commercial ewe flock.

T

After a sale of Texel shearling ewes the Quicks visited the Mortimer Charollais Flock of Geoff and John Probert in Herefordshire. “We had seen their consignment of shearling rams at the Builth Wells Ram Sale and knew they were the type of sheep we wanted to buy; not over big but fleshy and with meat in all the right places.” The Proberts presented their entire group of 60 shearling ewes and let Bill and Paul pick out 20 from this group to select from; in the end they bought the whole 20. Since that date they added a few ewes from Eric Sleep’s Trevadlock Flock in Cornwall and then have closed the flock. “Buying the majority of females from one flock has enabled us to create a type more rapidly than if we had gone from sale to sale and picked out sheep from a number of breeders.” The aim for the Charollais Flock is to produce 50 shearling rams each year. These are sold locally and at both Builth Wells Ram Sales and the NSA Sale at Exeter. “The local demand for Charollais rams is excellent; in fact we can sell more Charollais than Texel in our area.” Paul is adamant that Charollais breeders and maybe the Society should think long and hard about the presentation of the breed. “Shearling rams should not be trimmed for sale, they should be bare clipped 3-4

9 months prior to sale and presented naturally. The right types will stand out – well-fleshed rams with good top lines, plenty of meat behind the shoulders and natural fleshing qualities. Commercial ram buyers do not want rams that have been messed about, they want to see what they are buying and have confidence in their selections.” Paul thinks that the pen classes at the big commercial ram sales have far more relevance to the buyers than individual showing and put his efforts into getting a card at Builth. “A good pen of rams is far more attractive to the buyers than one stand out sheep. My father always said that it was better to buy an average sheep out of a good pen rather than a standout sheep from an ordinary pen.” Paul considers that trimming should continue for lambs and show sheep. The breed has enjoyed great success in the show ring which has given the breed invaluable publicity, but for the commercial market naturally presented rams is the way forward. “Just maybe if pedigree buyers had more confidence in what they were buying then the price structure for Charollais might go up. Without trimming the best would be clear for all to see and could result in stronger bidding.” But the current price structure for the Charollais breed is something which does not deter Paul. “In comparison with our Texel flock, we don’t get the high prices for rams or shearling ewes but we don’t have to spend tens of thousands on stock tups. At the end of the day we judge the flock from the bottom line and the Charollais are more than holding their own on profitability.” Paul is also

Paul Quick (right) with two home-bred prize-winning sheep; ram Loosebeare Mustard and unbeaten ewe. complimentary on the robustness of the breed “we have few losses with the Charollais who do not seem to have any genetic weaknesses. We end up with an even group of rams and the bottom end sell well.” The commercial flock is made up of 1,200 Suffolk x Mule ewes which are all tupped with Charollais and Texel rams. At the moment the split is 50:50 on the rams but Andrew Quick, who does the commercial lambs prefers the Charollais. “We don’t mollycoddle our sheep, they have to be outside in one or two days and the Charollais cross lambs are quite hardy enough for this treatment. I like them because of their growth rate; they are certainly faster than the Texel cross lambs.”

11 Paul adds that this is one aspect of the Charollais breed that has improved greatly over the past 10 years “breeders have put more head cover on the sheep and they are definitely tougher than they used to be; in another few years we should be able to dispel the myth that Charollais cannot cope with cold weather.” The prolificacy within Charollais is also fairly remarkable, the early flock scanned at 206% this year, “I would like a few less lambs, singles are so easy to manage! We lamb the last week of January/ first 2 weeks of February before having a 3 week break. We are not aiming for the ram lamb market.” With the two breeds on the farm the Quicks have tried a few cross-bred rams for the local market. To date it has mostly been Charollais tups onto Texel ewes, which failed to take the ram early on. “There is no doubt you get a good lamb, with a bit more width and power and certainly there is hybrid vigour. We have killed all the female lambs and just retained a few rams for customers who have asked for this cross. Buyers seem pleased with them, so we supply what the customer wants!”

Paul does see the rise in popularity of the crossbred rams as a bit of a threat to pedigree breeders “they have no registration costs and are free to make their own choices, but at the end of the day you have to come back to pure breeds to make these crosses. An injection of desirable traits can be of advantage to a breed, so we should not close our eyes to this possibility.” This year the family will be the hosts for the National Sheep Associations South West Sheep event. Paul says that the group of 45 Charollais shearling tups will not disappoint visitors “they outwintered on rape and are looking good – not at all overdone, just naturally well-fleshed tups that will go out and do a top job for commercial lamb producers.” It will certainly be an event well worth a visit.

Aberdeen F lock in praise of Charollais Carroll Barber reports on the flock at Parkhouse, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire

Highlander Ewes with Charollais x lambs on rotational grazing hen John Simpson returned to the family farm 10 years ago, he was determined to find a sheep production system that required less input in terms of labour. “I don’t like the term easy care but for lamb production to be profitable we have taken a hard look at the our breeds and make sure they are working to capacity without too much intervention from shepherds.”

W

The family farm is Parkhouse, near Maud, Aberdeenshire and runs to 151 hectares (375 acres) of which 200 acres are cereal crops, 30 acres of forage crops and the rest pasture. Prior to his return John had worked on a farm in Aberdeenshire which 7 years ago started breeding Highlander ewes and this led to John’s interest in this breed. The Highlander is a composite maternal breed developed in New Zealand and was bred to produce a smaller ewe with less feed

requirements, outdoor rearing and easy lambing and hence reduced production costs. “We have a flock of 600 ewes and ewe lambs which all went to the tup autumn 2014. Most of the ewes are now upgraded Highlanders; we started with a base of Lleyn ewes and have been

15 continually crossing these to Highlander rams each year to produce our replacement ewes,” explains John. A policy of culling hard any ewes that have problems either with lameness or at lambing has ensured an easier managed flock. “With a smaller ewe you can stock more to the acre and when it comes to handling they are far easier to cope with.” The lambing is now split into two periods; 80 ewes have been lambed earlier in February, to produce lambs for the high-priced early lamb trade. These are all tupped by Charollais rams. “It is crucial that these lambs have quick growth and produce a good quality carcase; there is no doubt that the Charollais achieves this.” The lambs are all sold direct to an abattoir except for a few that go to a local butcher. The local butcher is quite happy to take lambs at higher weights than the abattoir and the Charollais crosses fit into either specification. The main flock lambs in mid April and everything is lambed outside. Some buildings are available for any problems but the aim is to leave all the ewes outside. All retained ewe lambs are tupped and the farm achieves an average of 75-80% holding to service. The best Highlander adult ewes go to a Highlander tup to breed flock replacements, the remainder and all the ewe lambs go to the Charollais.

A quality carcase with quick growth is the vital element that a terminal sire needs to bring to the flock.” “My father used to breed registered Charollais, but now we have a dozen or so ewes to breed our own

Charollais x Highland lambs at weight. rams. We used to aim to breed the biggest tups we could to meet the demand in local markets but the commercial market needs a different type of sheep. A quality carcase with quick growth is the vital element that a terminal sire needs to bring to the flock.” The Simpsons have tried different terminal sires on the farm but have found other breeds are just too slow growing, lacking vitality at birth as well as giving cause for lambing difficulties. “We find the Charollais nicks well the Highlander ewe, the lambs are vigorous at birth and with a good-mothering ewe with plenty of milk there are no issues of lack of hardiness, even in our outside lambing system.” John buys a new Charollais tup every couple

Lowerye OTT – 14ZVY01182. A triplet son of Dudston Jasper out of a huge ewe by Rainbow House of Letterawe. He has tremendous growth rate, length& loin muscling, tremendous CT figures and is MyoMAX Gold. He has been heavily used in our March lambing flock, serving 80 ewes naturally, before moving on to work in the commercial flock. SEMEN FOR SALE.

Lowerye Lord – 11ZVY00861. A son of Krikey out of a ewe by L.Juggernaut, Lord was a March born lamb that just grew, weighing 80kg by October. High performance of grass only rearing, MyoMAX Gold, top CT figures & a great maternal line, Lord has it all. He has been our main stock sire in 2013 & 2014, along with a number of his sons. Now sold to Eire. Mortimer Jumbo – HH 9180. Top price shearling at Builth Wells in 2010. We purchased semen from this remarkable ram after seeing his progeny performing in other flocks and have some promising lambs on the ground.

Inglis Chalky – CN 2048. Purchased privately as a 6 year old after using his semen, Chalky was an immensely powerful ram with top 10% growth rate. He was owned jointly with the Mortimer flock where he sired the top priced shearling at Builth 2011.

Brettles Jet Set – WF 9078. Sired by the legend that is Rockvilla Golden Promise, Jet Set was the fourth highest index lamb in 2009. He had a CT muscularity score of +6.22 and has a fantastic length and depth of loin. He is MyoMAX Gold and now shared with the Mortimer flock. Sons sold to 1500gns, 1700gns & 1800gns.

We concentrate on high muscle depths and gigot muscularity, and providing high index forage fed shearling rams that will cover more ewes without melting. As with our commercial flock, rams are outwintered on roots and receive no concentrates at all. Management is strictly commercial, with routine foot trimming stopped well over a decade ago. Rams are predominantly sold on farm, in their working clothes.

17 of years and prefers a more naturally bred and reared animal. “We want a tup that will mate 70 ewes in one cycle and not lose much condition.” John also looks for performance recorded information and has in the past gone for some Lowerye blood. “I know there is a tendency, especially in our area for ram buyers to pay the highest prices for the largest rams, but the commercial market just does not need big show ponies for sires. We know what will produce a quality 40kgs prime lamb most efficiently.” John would urge all Charollais breeders to think more about the commercial market and what it required and not focus on showing or unrelated qualities. The quick growth of the Charollais crosses means all the February lambs are gone by May/June and the main flock progeny by Christmas. The aim is for 40 kgs live weight and most of the lambs grade E and U grades. “We can sell a little lighter earlier on to catch the market or take the lambs heavier to 23 kgs carcase, that is a big plus for the Charollais, there is a greater range of weights that you can sell at and they are still spot on for specification.”

Ewes wintering on swede and kale

John would like to expand his flock numbers in the future, if any land were to become available. He likes working with sheep and finds that not so many folk are of this frame of mind, so there is an opportunity for him to increase his numbers. “This year we did try a Logie Durno Maternal line tup in an attempt to put a bit more size and shape into the ewes. We will see if this is the right way to go or not and if we are able to wean more kg/ewe and ultimately more kg/ha from a slightly bigger ewe. But we will certainly continue with the Charollais as our terminal sire.”

In 1990 the Charollais breed became the first breed in the UK to participate in an across flock evaluation. This was a pivotal moment, because for the first time the genetic merit of sheep reared in different flocks could be accurately compared.

over time the analysis has adapted to reflect the changing breeding requirements of pedigree and commercial producers. Taking into account the inclusion of a “genetic groups model” to provide previously unrecorded animals with a fair starting point within the analysis – the Charollais evaluation has

changed several times over 25 years. In 2015 the Charollais index will change once more to take into account the improvements achieved in lamb growth rate and muscling.

A new Charollais breeding index Signet has recently produced a new index that retains the existing ATAN penalty placed on the leanest breeding lines and simultaneously reduces the emphasis applied to controlling the Fat Weight EBV. These changes will lead to the production of well-muscled, fast growing – but slightly fatter Charollais sheep.

The 25 years that followed have had many highs (and a few lows) as we have learned how to use the latest scientific advances to monitor and enhance the performance of recorded Charollais sheep; selecting animals whose genetic merit excels for those commercially important carcase traits. The Charollais has been the first to benefit from technology like ultrasound scanning and CT scanning. The breed has taken part in pioneering genomic approaches to the identification of major muscling genes and www.charollaissheep.com

23 These changes are best demonstrated in the chart above, which shows the relative change arising in each trait. This chart shows the new index is very much a win-win for Charollais breeders. The biggest change observed is the proportional increase in the amount of fat within the carcase and across the loin, but overall muscling is not affected and even faster progress can be now achieved in lamb growth traits. These changes are expected to further increase the commercial value of Charollais sires.

Recorded rams are in demand A survey undertaken in England at the start of the year indicated that over 95% of recording breeders had noted an increase in interest in performance recording over the last 10 years. More recent surveys completed by Abacus-Bio showed similar high levels of support for the work of Signet and Signet recorded flocks – but the true picture of the value people put in performance records is provided at sale time. In 2014, Top 10% recorded ram

lambs accounted for 25% of the sheep sold at the Worcester Premier Sale. They achieved a clearance rate 18% higher than non-recorded sheep and a £118/head premium. Buyers want to invest in rams with records of performance.

What does the future hold? The future is all about making the best decisions using the best possible information available. Due to the dedication of Charollais breeders and the forward thinking approach taken by the Charollais Society, this is an area in which the Charollais breed has always found itself well placed. In the short term, the AbacusBio review indicates that breeders now regard the Muscle Depth EBV as the most important trait when making breeding decisions. It will be no surprise to see breeders putting even more emphasis on this trait in the future; to accompany the genetic gains already achieved in growth rate. New CT traits such as intramuscular fat and spine length have been routinely collected for

several seasons amongst flocks sending lambs to the CT scanner and the availability of new EBVs for these traits is clearly an aspiration for the future. Breeders may also start considering whether the mature size of the breed should be controlled more closely. This can only be done through measurement – and hence breeders are encouraged to submit shearling ewe weights prior to tupping so that this trait can be monitored.

Across Breed Analysis However, the biggest changes on the horizon are less related to the genetic change possible within the Charollais breed – and more closely aligned to the way in which data will be analysed in the future. EBLEX are investing in research to look at analysing multiple terminal sires within the same BLUP analysis. This exciting approach should provide yet another incentive to encourage commercial producers to engage in the purchase of recorded genetics and it could be as revolutionary as those first across flock evaluations delivered twenty five years ago. www.charollaissheep.com

25 community of restaurants and Rob has benefited from the steady growth in quantity of meals being eaten out by consumers. This trade is very strong in the winter. In the summer trade switches to the Norfolk coastline, which is so popular with holiday makers and also it is the wedding season. Pork is still the biggest product sold by Swannington Farm to Fork but lamb meat is also a popular and important product line for the Mutimers.

Top quality Charollais lambs supply multi-award winning rural business - Carroll Barber reports ob and Helen Mutimer have over the past 9 years created a largescale and highly successful farm butchery business at Woodland Farm, Swannington in Norfolk.

R

The main enterprise on the farm is a herd of 600 free-range sows with all the offspring finished. “The pig business was running well; all our pigs were being sold to Waitrose and the system was relatively simple, but not very exciting” explains Rob. The farm shop started on a small scale but Rob was soon

enthused by the challenge and interaction with the public and the catering trade. Today the shop supplies 85 different wholesale customers across Norfolk. The split of the business is around 50% direct to customers and 50% to wholesale buyers. “We supply the whole range of customers right from the low price burger vans up to highclass restaurants” An interesting factor of the trade is the difference in seasons and areas within Norfolk. The City of Norwich has a thriving

The farm has some beautiful low lying meadows beside the Swannington Beck a tributary of the river Wensum, which is home to a flock of 350 North Country Mules and Texel and Suffolk cross ewes. “We started with the mules and have now retained some of our home-bred cross ewes. We run to very high health standards with our pig herd and wanted to follow a similar regime with the sheep, so buying out of markets was not an option,” explains Helen, whose is a fully qualified veterinary surgeon. The land is light so the flock is over-wintered on fodder

27 beet, which has proven slightly problematic with the different ewe breeds in the flock. “We found that the diet of ad-lib fodder beet did not suit the Texel cross ewes, who put on too much condition with resulting incidences of prolapse.” The challenge of the sheep flock is to have ready 8 – 10 lambs every week of the year to supply the shop. Six years ago they starting using Charollais rams to improve growth rate and carcase quality. “We look for performance recorded results and select with greatest emphasis on muscling traits, but also linked with a good growth EBV. On the mule we can go for a ram with a slightly higher figure for fat, without problems.” The flock lambs down outside with the ewes and lambs being penned inside for a short period before being turned back outside on fresh grass paddocks. “Easy lambing is vital for our system and with the Charollais we have very few births that require assistance. Also the lambs are lively and quick to suckle.” The field used for lambing is grazed by the pigs afterwards, so this rotates and cuts back any disease issues.

North Country Mule ewe with her week-old Charollais cross lambs at Woodland Farm, Swannington. The ewes rearing singles go up to the Norfolk coast where the grass tends to come earlier and these lambs then get away 1st. The stronger twins are batched up together and smaller triplets make up a further group to achieve continuity of supply. Some lambs are sold to a local abattoir (around 25%) if there are too many for the needs of the shop and also if the price is high. This leaves 75% which are sold direct. The Charollais cross lambs finish well at a range of weights which gives the Mutimers flexibility; carcase weights ranging from 18 – 28 kgs,

graded U3 and R3L are marketed successfully through the shop and wholesale outlets. “The catering trade is looking for a larger carcase, which are lambs that would be penalised by the abattoir.” Carcase structure is important. “At Easter we have a high demand for leg joints, in the summer racks of lamb are very popular for weddings and we have developed a cutting technique to use the shoulders for a Greek style dish that goes down well in pubs. Plenty of muscle without fat right through the carcase is what

29 we need.” The meat business has been so successful that Rob and Helen will soon be faced with a decision whether to expand further, which would mean a change of premises. They have invested in time-saving machinery; bacon slicing and sausage making machines but Rob says the most useful element is the bar coding technology which links back to the accounting programme. “With many customers taking in excess of 20 different lines in one order, we have to use this technology to be efficient.” The future of the sheep flock is also changing; “we purchased some Romney ewe lambs last year in a move towards a more self-sufficient ewe breed that in time will lamb and stay outside. We will see how they perform and whether this is a move in the right direction.”

31 majority of the Masham ewes on the farm are home-bred, being the progeny of the farm’s Dalesbred ewes and Teeswater rams. “We have a total of 810 Masham ewes, 400 Dalesbred ewes, 20 Teeswaters and 175 Masham hoggs. We like the Masham, she produces just what we need on this farm; few multiple births, a good carcase and able to thrive on the land, with minimal shepherding requirements.“

Mashams in Cumbria Chris Gibson and Matthew Berry back Charollais as their top terminal sire - Carroll Barber reports. ow Audlands farm in the Lake District Low Fells, near Kendal in Cumbria officially has ‘undisturbed wind’ all the way 30 miles from the coast and then from across the Irish Sea . As you can imagine it is therefore extremely exposed to harsh weather conditions and runs from 700’ – 1,000’. The 1,100 acre holding is farmed by a family partnership; Chris Gibson and his wife Anna together with Chris’s step-son Matthew Berry and his wife Louise and their two young children, 4 year old Jake and 1 year old Katy.

L

One ewe breed has dominated the farming at Low Audland for many years, the Masham. This hardy sheep renowned for its longevity and good mothering ability has stood the test of time. The

In addition to the sheep flock the farm has 200 dairy cows and 180 followers. “We took the decision a couple of years ago to up the number of cows and then house them, which has released more land for the sheep flocks. So their numbers have gone up as well.” In line with the farm’s policy to cut back on shepherding all the sheep are lambed outside from the end of March onwards. They can find some shelter from the stone walls but little else to protect them from the strong winds. Ten years ago the farm started using Charollais tups and continue to tup all the Mashams with the breed, including the hoggs. The family find them easily lambed with their small heads and get up and go.

“We did start with other terminal sires but nothing has worked as well as the Charollais.” “We buy our rams usually at the Bentham Rampage sale, which is first in the season. We would prefer to purchase rams with performance data, but if these are not available we go for the best shaped, growthy rams with width and a good bit of cover.”

33 “We did start with other terminal sires but nothing has worked as well as the Charollais.” Chris sells all the lambs deadweight to 2 Sisters, they select all the lambs on farm and take them to a collection centre a few miles away. Their ability to hit the target specification for 2 Sisters is to be admired. “They want a 20 kgs carcase at R2 or R3L and we find that the Charollais on the Masham does this consistently, with no risk of going overfat or not reaching the weight.” Quite rightly the farm is proud of the results achieved; to date they have sold 627 lambs graded R, 386 grade U and 47 graded E. “To get E grade lambs out of a cross-bred ewe is tremendous and nothing going overfat, which is when the penalties really kick in, anything graded 4 will lose you 35p/kg.” The flock starts lambing at the end of March and by the 1st August the first lambs are ready to go. Everything is reared outside on grass up until the end of November when a small amount of concentrate feed is given. During December and January the abattoir offer an extra 10p/kg for “Northern Lambs” and Chris takes advantage of this bonus and sends the majority of lambs during this period. They get paid on weights up to 21 kgs and a typical batch of 102 lambs that went in December averaged 19.9 kgs and £84 in money.

“The collection centre are just amazed when they see the results come back, the killing-out % and grades achieved are just spot on, for the market.”

Masham ewe with her Charollais cross lambs at Low Audlands Farm, Cumbria Chris is the first to admit that this cross does not produce the smartest looking lambs with the long coat of the Masham. “The collection centre are just amazed when they see the results come back, the killing-out % and grades achieved are just spot on, for the market.” “Sheep farmers have to accept what the consumer desires and produce it in a profitable way; worrying about flashy looks especially in the ewe breeds is just not relevant to making a profit from lambs.” Chris is sure that more emphasis needs to be put on easier rearing and carcase qualities in the future. “We love our sheep but they need to look after themselves; you cannot afford to spend too much time shepherding. My other step-son Adam has twice represented England in the World Championships and has spent a lot of time in New Zealand. My daughter Ellen is the secretary for the

35 Dalesbred Sheep Breeders Assocation.” The windy conditions are not all bad news for the farm. Some 19 years ago the long process of obtaining planning permission to put up wind turbines on the farm began. The metering that recorded the wind for three years confirmed that it was indeed an excellent site and today there are four turbines continually turning in the wind. One of the conditions of the planning permission was that 230 acres of land had to be farmed under a habitat management plan, similar to HLS. There are limitations on stocking rates and breeds that can be run on this land, so much so that in the summer it gets overgrown. “They are looking to re-establish heather on the land.”

The family have invested heavily on the farm in recent years. Chris explains “When you have someone to follow on from you who is so interested and dedicated to farming, then you want to ensure they have a good future. Matthew has an ambition to lamb 3,000 ewes and if we can find the land, there is no reason why he should not achieve it.” www.charollaissheep.com

Charollais Wool British Wool Marketing Board update – Gareth W Jones, Producer Communications Manager: s we enter another year the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) are encouraged by the continuing strong demand and are hopeful this will continue for the remainder of the selling season.

A

In terms of production, the increase last year was not as great as originally anticipated due to some sheep losses and the very dry spring. This resulted in less grease being in the fleeces and therefore, the weight being down. However, this is not all bad news as the prices are determined by clean weight so the loss in actual weight should be compensated by a rise in price. In general, apart from China, all the other major wool producing countries are, if not static, experiencing a fall in the size of their clips. The supply factors are not positive but with the global economy improving, we have seen a very consistent pattern of price and clearances over the last 18 months for British Wool.

GRADING WOOL One important service the Board provides to all producers is we grade your wool – we grade wool in order to add value to your product. Every fleece is individually graded as every fleece is unique in terms of quality and characteristics. The wool is graded by type rather than breed with the Charollais wool falling into the ‘Fine’ category.

CHAROLLAIS FLEECES The wool produced by the Charollais is very soft to handle with an average fleece weight of 1.5 – 2 kgs. The staple length would be variable measuring between 4 – 6cm and a micron range of 29 – 30.5. The micron measures the fineness of the fibre and is vital information for the buyers when identifying the wool they require. Some of the Charollais wool would be used for the Japanese bedding market and also blending for apparel. The Campaign for Wool is now in its 5th year and continues to raise awareness of wool as a versatile, quality fabric for both the fashion and furnishing industries. During last year’s ‘Wool Week’ held in October 2014, a number of high profile events took place to continue to engage with the consumer on the benefits of wool as well as woollen products. This included an interiors collection exhibited at Southwark Cathedral in London with a broad range of fabrics, flooring, furnishings and lifestyle items including craft and creative pieces gathered together to show the story of wool interiors. I wish you all a successful year and to those exhibiting, we look forward to seeing many of you at the shows and competitions during the year.

63 Suffolk cross ewe with Charollais lambs in Pembrokeshire The farming enterprise comprises of 36 acres of owned land with a further 27 acres of rented ground. His sheep now number 300 ewes, up 50 ewes from last year, through the introduction of home bred mules; bred off draft welsh ewes, and home bred Suffolk cross mules.

Charollais takes pole position in ram trial. Emyr Hughes updates us on results of an on-farm ram trial in Wales. welve months ago we reported about a unique ram trial being carried out by Gareth Thomas, a young shepherd attempting to make his sheep business more profitable. He embarked on this unique trial, in order to assess which terminal sire will suit his sheep system best of all. Pitting several different terminal sire breeds head to head, with “no hiding

T

places” and everything fully recorded through EID. Gareth (25) farms in conjunction with his mother and father near Letterston in Pembrokeshire. All three also work full-time, with Gareth working on a local dairy farm. He also has a keen interest in training sheep dogs for trials and sale.

“We’re now at the point where we have enough ewes” says Gareth, “so I’ve been looking for something to improve the end product”. Unsure which terminal sire to choose Gareth decided to buy one of each type that took his fancy rather than a group from one breed. In the summer of 2013 Gareth bought a Suffolk, a Texel, a Beltex cross Charollais and a pure bred Charollais. So, how did the Charollais ram fair when compared to his counterparts from other breeds?

“He was the stand out ram” “He was the stand out ram” reports Gareth, “we were so convinced by the job the

65 breed was doing for us we mated that ram to over 90 ewes in 2014 and bought another for a further 60 ewes.” ”Half of the flock now go to the Charollais tup”. One of the main reasons Gareth gives for this, is the rapid growth rate of the Charollais sired lambs.

The speed of getting the lambs to a saleable specification is something that set the Charollais sired lambs apart from the other lambs. The speed of getting the lambs to a saleable specification is something that set the Charollais sired lambs apart from the other lambs. This growth rate has also led to Gareth changing his lambing system for spring 2015. “We are going to try lambing in two batches this year, lambing 60 ewes much earlier in January”. These ewes will be lambing indoors, in the same way that the ewes have always been lambed previously, and then turned out at 24hrs old. Gareth is clear

“People told us that the Charollais couldn’t cope, that it was too soft!” “This is nonsense; picking the right ram with the correct head cover, the Charollais will stick the weather as well as anything else”.

Pick the right ram with the correct head cover, and the Charollais will stick the weather as well as anything else”. These early born lambs will then be creep fed and pushed on for the early spring lamb market, something that Gareth has not done before. But the growth rate of the Charollais has meant it’s something that he now thinks is achievable to make full use of the market peak. Lambing an early group will then allow all of the remaining ewes to be lambed later on in March, including 90 ewes put to two Charollais rams and others put to the Bluefaced Leicester to produce mules and some to a Suffolk for further female replacements. Gareth hopes that these lambs will then be finished off grass and sold throughout the remainder of the year.

67 Previous years have seen lambs taken right through over the winter to sell as hoggets. But the goal now is to finish all lambs before the Autumn. “The Charollais ability to finish off grass should mean that all lambs will be away by the Autumn”. Also, lambing and finishing a percentage of lambs early should leave more grass to finish the second bunch without any feed. Gareth’s new system model highlights the versatility of the Charollais. He is clear “Charollais lambs grow and finish fast with a good carcase on the creep system or just off grass.” “It’s why we bought another one”. Gareth is also full of praise for many of the other traits of the Charollais breed. Firstly, the “Get up and go” as he puts it, of the lambs.

“They are unbelievable at lambing time” says Gareth, “They are up and suckling in no time” “They are unbelievable at lambing time” says Gareth, “They

Suffolk Cross ewes waiting to lamb. are up and suckling in no time” “Having lively lambs instead of lazy lambs just makes things so much easier”. The ease of lambing is also something that Gareth states reduces stress when lambing large groups of ewes together.

the system for the foreseeable future. “As long as the breed produces good carcase sheep that grow quickly it’s a clear winner here” he says. It speaks volumes for the breed that when matched up against its closest rivals it has proved once again it can come out on top.

Another quality Gareth is keen to talk about is the working ability of the Charollais rams themselves. “They serve lots of ewes, they are very active” with one of the Charollais rams covering 90 ewes last year.

“As long as the breed produces good carcase sheep that grow quickly it’s a clear winner here”

So impressed is Gareth with the merits of the Charollais that he is sure that it will remain part of

Charollais ram lambs in New Zealand awaiting CT scanning.

Charollais Down Under

Ian McDougall reports on his Charollais breeding operations in Australia and New Zealand.

t is now 10 years since I implanted the first Charollais embryos into recipients in Australia. Since then Charollais has expanded across Australia and into New Zealand.

I

Progress has not been fast, Charollais have had to Australianise and Kiwi-ize – adapt to the local conditions and it takes time to fully evaluate the quality of individual ewes and rams. Breeding terminal sire rams is not only about the figures (all my flocks are performance recorded) – farmers down under expect rams to mate 100 ewes in 35 days and do this for 4 years so, good feet and

legs are a must as is an ability to do well off grass under tough conditions. We have continued to cull hard and flush our best ewes to our best rams. Although both Australia and New Zealand speak a similar form of English their sheep industries are very different. Australia is a large continent with many different climatic zones and in the main, much drier than New Zealand. Large quantities of grain and legumes (peas, beans and lupins) are produced in Australia meaning that these are available for supplementary feeding in times of drought or over the

71 prolonged summer dry period. Silage, unfortunately is very rarely fed to sheep in Australia.

NEW ZEALAND New Zealand however grows much more grass, produces very little grain but much more silage and haylage. Kiwi farmers tend to be far superior to their Australian counterparts at grassland management but Australian farmers are possibly better at drought management! The explosion in dairy farming in New Zealand over the past 8 years has left the bulk of the sheep occupying the cold, wet and windy hill country. Our rams have to produce tough hardy lambs that are born with a decent birth coat and quick to suckle. No nice warm shed or heat lamps here! The small, the weak and those with a poor birth coat are quickly “culled”. Lambs then must grow as fast as possible to 12 – 13 weeks of age at which point they should be heavy enough to slaughter (3642 kgs lwt) and have a carcase good enough to qualify for the premium ($5-6/lamb). All outside off grass. No creep or concentrates are fed.

Typical New Zealand sheep country - cold, wet and windy hill land

PROGENY TESTING We progeny test our stock sires over crossbred ewes to better understand how they perform “down on the farm”. Each stock ram is put to 80 crossbred ewes, all ewes are lambed in their sire mating group, lambs are given an EID at tailing before being mixed and raised as a single group. We record the weight of the lamb at tailing (day 5-10) then at day 50 and again at weaning. In 2014 there was a 6 kgs difference in the live weight of progeny between best and worst sires. At birth this difference was 0.9kgs, at 50 days it was 1.8 kgs

but by 95 days it was 6 kgs. We are retaining the crossbred ewe lambs to grade up from and are selecting them on their ability to grow quickly from day 50 till weaning as this period identifies those lambs that have an ability to grow off grass.

CT SCANNING Extensive use of CT scanning (30—40 lambs per year) is identifying sires that transmit extra muscle to all their progeny (rams that carry 2 copies of the Charollais muscling gene) from those that appear to transmit extra muscle to only half of their progeny (carry one copy of the Charollais muscling gene).

MUSCLING GENE We use rams carrying 2 copies of the Charollais muscling gene in grading up programmes because all their progeny will carry some extra muscle. Grading up enables us to quickly improve both the maternal qualities of our Charollais type ewe and the hardiness of the new born lamb. It appears that a “Kiwi-ized” Charollais suits New Zealand farmers – the on-farm data we have to date indicates that our Charollais are competing very well against Lamb Supreme and Sufftex rams - as judged by lamb weaning weights and carcase quality and we know we can improve further.

AUSTRALIA Australia produces a heavier lamb at slaughter, 45-55kgs live weight. Over the past 30 years the Australian version of Signet has encouraged farmers to select for fast growth rates to 21 weeks of age and a big eye muscle. In response pedigree breeders have produced rams (White Suffolk and Poll Dorset) that grow very fast, are very long and lean with not much hind quarter muscle and with no ability to produce a finished lamb at under 55 kgs live weight.

Retained Charollais ram lambs in New Zealand A proportion of these lambs also “get stuck on the way out” which enables us to sell the easy lambing traits of the Charollais to farmers. Fortunately for us the best money is now paid on the 45-50kgs live weight lamb so demand for our Charollais in Australia is increasing and some breeders of White Suffolk and Poll Dorset are crossing Charollais into their sheep to breed a terminal sire that is easier lambing and more suited to the changed market place.

Britain to New Zealand in the not too distant future. This will enable us to expand our genepool but will also bring in those genes we have been culling. Australia is now beginning to focus on meat eating quality – recent research into our Charollais in Australia indicates that Charollais meat is tender and juicy – exactly what the market requires. Onwards and Upwards!

Coldharbour Award Winners Coldharbour flock wins Eblex “Most Improved Flock Award” for the Charollais breed The Coldharbour flock, owned by Tony and June Gregory of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, has been recognised by EBLEX as the Most Improved Flock of Charollais sheep in England for 2015. The award is presented by the EBLEX Better Returns Programme (BRP) to the recorded flock that shows the greatest genetic gain for commercial characteristics over a 12-month period. Coldharbour Farm is a grassland farm comprised of permanent pastures. Tony and June moved there 35 years ago with a flock of Welsh Mules, their first experience of a Charollais was with a ram used to produce finished lamb for the market. They soon concluded that Charollais rams used as a terminal sire provide stress-free lambing, fast-growing lambs, with a good carcase quality and a high killing-out percentage.

Tony and June Gregory with shearling ewes from their award winning Coldharbour Flock. genetics and changed the breeding line. They rented more land and expanded by establishing a Lleyn flock alongside the Charollais, at times running up to 400 sheep in total. With the December-lambing Charollais flock and the Lleyns crossed with Charollais rams lambing in March, they could breed top quality sheep for breeders and sell high quality meat through their own farm shop. The shop, which opened in 2001, became a successful family business selling up to six lambs a week.

Establishing the flock gradually In 1990 they were keen to establish a pedigree flock and the Charollais seemed the natural choice. They acquired some good stock from notable breeders and built their Coldharbour flock up gradually by keeping their own replacements and buying in a few extra ewes along the way. Investing in a good ram when necessary has improved

Dedicated recorders and Sire Reference Scheme members The Gregorys started performance recording their lambs in 1998 and joined the Sire Reference Scheme the following year, with the intention of providing rams with high breeding values to suit both pedigree and commercial farmers.

77 “I was keen to start recording when it became evident that buyers were looking for crossbred lambs with a combination of length and muscling ability,” said Tony. “Data received from recording, ultrasound and CT scanning has proven very beneficial in being able to quantify progress and promote sheep with good muscle and length.” In addition to good breeding values and overall index, their breeding stock must have good visual appearance, a well-muscled body, good legs (not with excessive bone), sound feet and mouths and a tight fleece. Through their involvement with the Sire Reference Scheme, the Coldharbour flock has had a number of homebred rams successfully selected as reference sires and has been able to access genetics from other flocks which offer the right combination of breed characteristics and performance traits.

Easter they start to select animals with good conformation, and true to type. They sell rams for breeding and, although the majority of females will be retained as replacements, they are members of a select few breeders at the in-lamb ewe sale at Builth Wells each autumn. Making use of artificial insemination has provided them with the opportunity to use a range of different sires over the years. The one with the greatest influence in the flock is Coldharbour Famous Grouse, selected as a Sire Reference Ram in 2006. Famous Grouse was a very correct strong ram, highly rated, and consistently produces stock with good conformation and muscularity. In order to widen the gene pool they invested in Castellau Grandeur and enjoyed great success with him in the show ring. He too has proven to be a great sire, with progeny displaying his great attribute of style, length, muscle, width and back ends.

Over the years, they have built sound relationships with repeat customers, providing quality rams for both pedigree and commercial buyers, and have enjoyed many successes in the show ring.

Focus on genetics Due to a change of personal circumstances, combined with the devastating effect of the Schmallenberg virus which led to 60 per cent losses during the 2012 lambing season, they decided to reduce overall numbers. They now concentrate on their own 40-acre farm and their pedigree Charollais flock of 50 breeding ewes. The Gregorys’ December lambing flock is lambed indoors and weaned at eight weeks of age. 79 Going outside of the scheme to widen the bloodline led to a fall in their overall figures. However, the use of their two new stock rams, Logie Durno Navigator (shared with Jonathan and Carroll Barber) and homebred Coldharbour Naprose (son of Famous Grouse), have seen figures rise again during the last twelve months. Now the Gregory’s watch with renewed excitement as progeny develop from Loanhead Oddson, a new ram purchased last year at the Worcester Premier Sale.

Increased interest in figures Speaking about the benefits of performance recording, Tony said: “In the last few years, customers are showing increased interest in animals with figures. They are seeking animals with superior muscling and length, and an awareness of the positive correlation between daily liveweight gain and the ability for early finishing. Performance recording helps us satisfy their requirements.” Commenting on the win, Signet Breeding Services Manager Sam Boon said: “Rates of genetic improvement in Signet recorded flocks are at an all-time high. The difference between the best high EBV breeding stock and average animals is increasing year on year.” “This means commercial producers have more to gain when investing in rams with superior genetics. Pedigree breeders can capitalise on these differences too and this is exactly what Tony and June have done. The improvement in the genetic merit of their flock is clear and they are to be congratulated on their achievement.”

Royal Welsh Show 2014 THREE YEARS IN A ROW - CHAMPION OF CHAMPION WIN FOR CHAROLLAIS BREED For the third year in a row the Charollais breed took the highly coverted ‘Champion of Champions’ award at the Royal Welsh Show. Coming through as winner of the Continental Section, Adrian Davies’s 3 shear ewe, Glyn Coch Lady Gaga was the top sheep at the show. Interbreed judge, Mr Morgan said the Charollais had been an easy winner, having style, great length and evenness of fleshing. “On the day she is a superb ewe with

everything in her favour.” The ewe is sired by Artnagullion Jose out of a Edstaston bred ewe by Wraycastle Delmonte. Previously she was reserve breed champion at the Royal Welsh Show in 2012. The Davies family from Manordeilo in Carmarthenshire were ecstatic with their victory. It was the first time the flock had taken the breed championship and then to go on to win the overall title at the show was indeed an historic

The Male Championship went to Edward Lloyd-Lewis and Meilir Jones’s very powerful senior ram, Wrenvale Master sired by Crogham Hannibal II. Standing reserve male champion was an outstanding ram lamb from the Logie Durno Flock. Officer was an ET lamb by Loanhead Midas Touch out of Logie Durno Kate, the 2012 RWAS Interbreed Champion. This lamb went on to be victorious in the Interbreed Ram Lamb competition. Geoff and Carol Watson’s multiple show winning shearling ram headed the line-up in his class. His sire was Sulwood Lieutenant out of a home-bred ewe. The Castellau flock was in the cards most of the day and had the pleasure of winning maybe the strongest class of the day, the shearling ewes. 87 claimed the red rosette. In the Shearling Ram Class the Lornbrook Flock were once again at the top of the line, this time it was a homebred ram, Lornbrook Nutcracker, sired by last year’s Male Champion, Gogwell Kicking King, who caught the Judges eye. A very correct, well-muscled ram that portrayed the natural characteristics of the breed. Aberdeenshire Judge Mr William Ingram had no qualms in going onto place him breed champion.

Balmoral Show 2014 MORE INTERBREED SUCCESS FOR CHAROLLAIS BREED AT BALMORAL Whoever said showing isn’t exciting should come along to Balmoral Show where the Charollais Breed added a little spice to the Interbreed events. It was another great Balmoral Show for the McAllister Family winning the Supreme Interbreed Champion for the second consecutive year. This year’s winner was a tremendous gimmer Artnagullion Nigella, sired by Castellau Figurehead and out of the same dam as last

year’s Champion, a Loaning Foot Highlander daughter. Charollais also won the Interbreed Pairs for the second consecutive year with the impressive combination of the Breed Champion and Reserve Champion from the Lornbrook and Artnagullion Flocks. First into the ring were the Senior Rams and it was last year’s “Male of the Year”, Hollylodge Made to Measure. son of Blakeney King Louis, who

The senior ewe class was headed up by last year’s “Female of the Year”, Lornbrook J-Lo, who went on to be placed reserve female champion. A very strong line-up of shearling ewes attracted a lot of interest around the ring side and were a great showcase for the breed. The Artnagullion Flock of William McAllister was awarded the red rosette; a Castellau Figurehead daughter out of a Loaningfoot Highlander dam Artnagullion Nigella, proved a worthy winner going on to win female breed champion and reserve breed champion. First of their winners was their ram lamb, Logie Durno Officer. A son of Loanhead Midas Touch out of Logie Durno Kate, the multiple Interbreed Champion at the 2012 Royal Welsh Show.

Royal Highland Show 2014 NORTHERN IRISH FLOCKS TAKE THE GLORY AT ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW Northern Irish breeders took the Royal Highland Show by storm walking away with all the top prizes. Judge, Mr Tim Prichard from Glamorganshire found his champion from the shearling ram class and selected Diane Christie’s solid and smart tup, Lornbrook Nutcracker. His sire was Gogwell Kicking King; a purchase at the 2010 Worcester Premier Sale.

The Lornbrook flock also won the reserve title with their senior stock ram, Hollylodge Made to Measure. This tup was bred in Northern Ireland by the McConnell Bros and was sired by Blakeney King Louis out of a Ballynoe House Felix ewe. Top of the females also came over to the show from Northern Ireland. Jonathan Aiken’s shearling ewe from his Carnew flock won a strong class and then took the female

The first prize ewe from the Logie Durno flock was a twoshear bred the same way as Kate; by Rockvilla Golden Promise out of a Rutland ewe by Foulrice Chieftain. The Parkgate Flock of Alan and Herbie Kennedy were top of the line in the ewe lamb class with their smart daughter of Carnew Nijinsky out of an Artnagullion Knailer ewe. So Northern Irish breeding was also much to the fore with this lamb. Finishing off the day with another ticket was the Logie Durno Flock with their winning group of three.

95 exhibitors David and James Norman from Cockermouth in Cumbria. Their ram lamb Kirkhouse Optimus beat off the competition to win his class. This triplet ram lamb was the product of an in-lamb ewe purchased from the Castellau Flock of Tim Prichard. His sire was Castellau Lord of the Manor and his dam was by Galtres Dominator. The lamb was awarded the reserve male champion ticket.

Gt Yorkshire Show 2014 DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR FOULRICE FLOCK AT GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW Yorkshire flock owners Charles and Valerie Marwood enjoyed a memorable Great Yorkshire Show winning both the Female and Male Championship awards. Taking the top prize was their delightful shearling ewe by Dalby Mount Aloe out of a Castellau Krypton ewe. The judge Mr Charles Sercombe from Leicestershire was obviously so impressd with the shearling ewes, that he selected his reserve champion from that class

as well. This accolade went to David Dennis, also from Yorkshire with a Llynfi Leading Light ewe from his Silton Flock. The male champion from the Foulrice Flock was Rhaeadr Nock, purchased at the Worcester Premier Sale in 2013 for 4,000 gns. His sire was the Southern Irish bred ram Ballyhibben Klass Act and his dam by Parkgate Hurricane.

Regular exhibitor from Worcester Percy Tait won the senior ram class with his stock ram, Kingsland Louis. This ram was also sired by a Ballyhibben ram, this time Paddy Power. In the senior ewe class it was junior breeder, Molly Dougherty from Malton in Yorkshire, who lead the line-up with her father’s ewe by Foulrice Excalibur out of an Arjane Hardy ewe. Geoff and Carol Watson from Northamptonshire won the ewe lamb class with their sparky daughter of their Bincombe Kirk Patrick, senior stock ram and also stood first with their team of three.

Three Counties Show 2014 KINGS LAND FLOCK LANDS PAIRS INTERBREED TITLE AND RESERVE SUPREME AT ROYAL 3 C’S Peter Vaughan, from Herefordshire, had a highly succesful, albeit last Three Counties Show with sheep from his Kings Land Flock, which was dispersed in the summer. The Kings Land shearling ewe was the breed champion and also went on to be awarded the reserve interbreed championship against all other breeds. The ewe was sired by the Southern Ireland bred tup, Ballyhibben Killarney out of a Penrhos Ibanez

ewe. Taking the reserve breed champion award was the 2-shear stock ram, Loanhead Monarch of the Glen. This ram is jointly owned by the Kingsland, Mortimer and Crogham Flocks and was top price and champion at the 2013 Worcester Premier Sale. Monarch was sired by Rockvilla Golden Promise out of a Dalby ewe. The Champion and Reserve paired up to take the Interbreed Pairs title.

The first prize ewe was exhibited by Janet and Jonathan Corbett from Gloucestershire. Their Highway ewe was by Oakchurch Lukasz out of a Banwy Impressive ewe. Paul Amplett’s Tawelfa flock put out a great team of three ram lambs all sired by Tymaen Knobby to win the progeny class.
