DEMOGRAPHICS

El Segundo’s population grew steadily from the town’s inception, and spiked dramatically after World War II. With limited available space to build housing, the population eventually leveled off at just over 16,000. That number has increased slightly with construction of several large multi-unit condo and townhome complexes. The city has seen an influx of new residents in recent years – many of them younger, educated professionals. They choose El Segundo not just because they work here, but also because of the community’s excellent schools, low crime, quiet neighborhoods, city services, and small town charm.

ore than half and perhaps as much as two-thirds of the water used in El Segundo is reclaimed – cleaned and recycled – for use, especially in industrial applications. El Segundo is the only city in California that can make this claim. The City has also launched a number of environmental programs/policies addressing energy efficiency, water conservation, solid/hazardous waste, recycling, transportation and more. It also hosts green workshops and community shred days. El Segundo has earned awards and commendations from regional agencies for water conservation/recycling efforts and is a pioneering community in LEED construction (the internationally recognized benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings) – with examples including Fire Station 2, KARL STORZ Endoskope, Los Angeles Military Entrance Processing Station, Pacific Corporate Towers (PCT) and the UCLA Health Training Center, among many others. As of May 1, 2019, EDCO has implemented fully automated waste and recycling collection services for single-family homes and duplexes in the City of El Segundo. This state-of-the-art collection system is extremely efficient and results in a clean and orderly appearance on waste collection day and complies with state mandated requirements. Additionally, El Segundo residents have access to EDCO’s dedicated community website, where they will be able to look up their collection and street sweeping day with a click of a button, as well as navigating through news and events specific to El Segundo to find service alerts, upcoming cleanup and shredding events, and environmental news. Also, effective February 1st, all Commercial and Multi-Family properties will be provided solid waste, organics, and recyclables collection services from their solid waste providers, as the City has implemented a Commercial permit program. The El Segundo Environmental Committee continues to grow, with a mission to improve social, economic and environmental well-being by fostering partnerships through education, guidance and outreach.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

PUBLIC SAFETY

The El Segundo Police Department (ESPD) has a long history of providing outstanding quality service to those who live, work, and visit the community. In July 2017, ESPD welcomed its 13th Chief of Police. Chief Bill Whalen came to El Segundo with 28 years of law enforcement experience. ESPD is authorized for 62 sworn police officers, supported by 38 civilian staff members along with many community volunteers. One of the most important things ESPD does is engage with the community. Whether through coffee with a cop, police department open houses, or other community events, the department takes this responsibility very seriously. ESPD recognizes the badge of its office as a symbol of public trust and works hard every day to stay engaged with the community and earn this trust.

cars when they are parked and windows and doors should be locked. Garage doors should be closed and bicycles not left outside. In addition to crime, a significant complaint the police department receives is on homeless individuals. This is a complex societal issue that is very challenging to address. In 2019, the ESPD implemented its homeless response plan and has two officers dedicated to working with the homeless. Additionally, the department was able to retain a part time mental health worker who rides with the officers on a weekly basis. Further information about the homeless outreach efforts along with resources if you or someone you know is or is about to become homeless can be found on the City of El Segundo website. 2019 saw several significant department initiatives. The first was a department reorganization. As part of this reorganization, ESPD created a Community Engagement Division led by a police lieutenant. This division consolidates all of the community outreach efforts to maximize their effectiveness.

El Segundo is a very safe community. However, it is not crime free. Theft remains the most significant crime concern and it’s important that everyone does his or her part to minimize the chances of becoming a victim. Valuables should be removed from

Recruiting quality men and women to fill the ranks of the ESPD remained a priority initiative in 2019. A multi-faceted strategy that involved a marketing company and significant hiring bonuses was developed and for the first time in several years

EL SEGUNDO

PROGRAMS ESFD is leveraging technology to make internal processes more efficient, while continuing to strive to reach a goal of becoming paperless. Enhancements underway include: p Automated policy and procedure manuals have been completed

FIRE

DEPARTMENT When it comes to fire and life safety service, the efforts to help those in need is met by placing the community first, while maintaining our motto of Courtesy & Service. In a vibrant community such as El Segundo, the ability to provide efficient, effective emergency response services relies on the people, programs and projects that support El Segundo Fire Department’s (ESFD) efforts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. PEOPLE There are 14 fire suppression personnel on duty each day, on three separate shifts, providing fire and life safety services (42 total suppression personnel). In addition there are three (3) fire prevention personnel, three (3) hazardous material personnel and three (3) personnel assigned to fire administration for a total 51 professionals. Last year the suppression division completed over 12,000 hours of in-service training, which accounts for over two (2) hours of training per person each day. ESFD is on track to respond to over 3,800 emergency calls for service, with about two-thirds of those dealing with emergency medical service. And finally the City’s Emergency Management Division will be brought back under the fire department where we will continue to collaborate and prepare the community and employees for disasters.

the ESPD attained full staffing levels in November of this year. Several of these new hires were tenured lateral police officers who are already providing a significant value. There are many pending retirements so recruitment will remain a focus for the foreseeable future. Several additional specialty and collateral assignments were created to provide career development opportunities for officers while improving our ability to fight crime and conduct community outreach. These include: p Development of the El Segundo Beach Patrol p Assigning an officer to a regional auto theft task force assignment p Assigning an officer to a regional Part 1 crime task force assignment

p Paperless fire inspection program has been implemented p Enhanced, paperless Records Management System (RMS) is up and running p Pre-alert dispatch system has seen an average 17 second improvement in dispatch times

p Upgraded Emergency Radio Communication System has been implemented with all new digital, trunked radios which dramatically improve emergency communications. WORK IS UNDERWAY WITH FIRE DEPARTMENT ACCREDITATION! ESFD has embarked on a formalized self-assessment that is communityfocused, data-driven and outcome-based, providing residents, business owners and visitors with the knowledge that the department provides exceptional fire and life safety services. This first phase included a community-driven strategic plan that will be adopted in Early 2020 and provides the road map for key initiatives over the next five (5) years. Next we will complete a community risk assessment and standards of cover plan to ensure we are properly positioned for emergency incidents.

PROJECTS ESFD added several new vehicles to the fleet and received a community donation from Chevron for additional apparatus. Chevron donated funds to purchase a new Pierce fire engine (Engine 32), a new rescue ambulances and a back-up command vehicle. In addition, the department received a homeland security grant to purchase an Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) support truck. These vehicles totaled over $1 million and would have otherwise come from the general fund if not for the grant and donation. The department is now well positioned with the fleet for the next eight years. ESFD implemented a Firefighter Health & Wellness program aimed at keeping the employees physically, mentally and emotionally fit, while working to reduce injuries. Advanced physical fitness programs aimed at functional exercises, nutrition and mental health through a peer support network was put in place to keep firefighters in a constant state of readiness, thereby ensuring first-rate fire and life safety services are delivered to our community. 11

RECREATION El Segundo Offers the Best in Recreation and Parks

RECREATION, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

El Segundo has one of the finest Recreation and Parks departments in the South Bay. The Recreation

Department was formed in 1956, and features over 100 year-round programs and classes for all ages including cultural arts, adult and youth sports leagues, aquatics, trips and drama. With nearly 30 parks, facilities and fields there is something for everyone to do! This impressive list is highlighted by one of El Segundo’s cornerstones: Recreation Park, which encompasses over 21 acres in the heart of El Segundo. The park is located north of Grand Avenue at Eucalyptus Street and serves as home to many of the city’s youth sports organizations and recreation programs which are offered at the George E. Gordon Clubhouse and Joslyn Center. Recreation Park also hosts the city’s Annual Fourth of July Celebration, a treasured community event that is a prime example of El Segundo’s small town charm. Additionally, El Segundo has its own Teen Center, Skate Park and Senior Citizen Housing Complex adjacent to Recreation Park. In addition to Recreation Park, many of our other parks are just as important to our community. El Segundo has received the prestigious Tree City USA recognition for 15 consecutive years for managing an urban forest of over 6,000 trees that have a value of over $18 million. Library Park, across the street from El Segundo High School on Main Street displays many of these beautiful trees and hosts the popular Concerts in the Park Series each summer. Along with these concerts, Library Park is home to the Annual Hometown Fair and Carnival each May. If expansive views are more your style, stop by Clutter’s Park on Imperial Avenue for a view of LAX and the Los Angeles Basin while planes from all over the world buzz by. If it is sports you want, hop across town to the Campus El Segundo Athletic Fields. Residents from all over the South Bay flock to our state-of-the-art complex which features two 100-by-65-yard synthetic turf fields serving various recreational activities with seating and a snack bar. Golf lovers need to look no further than The Lakes at El Segundo which features its own ninehole executive golf course that includes a full-service pro shop, night-lit driving range, certified instructors and restaurant with banquet facilities. Swimming also has a longstanding tradition in El Segundo. The city’s club water polo teams competed in the Olympics back

in the early 1950s at the historic 75-year-old Urho Saari Swim Stadium, also known as The Plunge. The Plunge houses two indoor pools for competitive and recreational use. In addition, an outdoor pool is available at Hilltop Park during the summer months. The new state-of-the-art El Segundo-Wiseburn Aquatics Center features a 50-meter competition pool and is the home pool for both the El Segundo High School and Wiseburn Da Vinci High School swimming and water polo teams. This facility is also open for lap swim, Master’s workouts, triathlon training, and group swim lessons. The El Segundo Certified Farmers’ Market is a weekly attraction in Downtown

El Segundo each Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. on Main Street. The market features produce vendors, fresh flowers, art and crafts, entertainment, hot food and a raffle drawing. Despite its reputation as a corporate haven, El Segundo is also a charming coastal community. Sunbathers, joggers, bicyclists, and shell collectors make their way down the hill on Grand Avenue to El Segundo Beach, which is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Just north of El Segundo Beach is the famed Dockweiler Beach, which features the only RV Park on the beach in Los Angeles County. No matter what you’re looking for, El Segundo has it all. We can’t wait to see you and hope you enjoy our parks! EL SEGUNDO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

EL SEGUNDO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Transforming Education for a Changing World The El Segundo Unified School District is transforming education for a changing world by aspiring to continuously improve upon our students’ education. We believe we must constantly evolve in an effort to fulfill our mission, remain relevant to students and parents, and prepare ESUSD graduates for college and careers. In the last five years, ESUSD has received more than 20 awards from outside agencies recognizing its educational excellence. The Association of California School Administrators named Dr. Melissa Moore 2018 Superintendent of the Year (Region 14). El Segundo Middle School was recognized as a 2018 Schools to Watch – Taking Center Stage designation for academic excellence, responsiveness to students’ needs and social equity. In 2019, El Segundo High school was recognized as a California Distinguished School and an Exemplary Arts Education award by the California Department of Education, and earned distinction as a California Democracy School. For its sustainability practices, Center Street School was honored as a Green Ribbon School in 2018. And, ESUSD students regularly win national and

state awards honoring their work in robotics, engineering and technology to writing and band and choral competitions. A complete list of ESUSD’s noteworthy accomplishments from 2014-2019 is available on our website at www.elsegundousd.net. In 2018, thanks to the voters in this community, ESUSD successfully passed a $92 million General Obligation Bond Measure to improve aging school facilities and technology. As projects outlined in the District’s Long-Range Facilities Master Plan get underway, ESUSD will regularly communicate how your bond dollars are building a better education in this community. In 2019, ESUSD adopted a Graduate Profile outlining the necessary foundation for students’ future success in college and career. The Graduate Profile, which is part of a nationwide movement in education, is made up of the cognitive, personal, and interpersonal competencies ESUSD believes students should possess when they graduate from high school. This profile will help guide and align the district’s educational practices to help students achieve the profile competencies identified. >> pg. 18

ESUSD continues to leverage its membership in the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools to expand digital learning opportunities at the elementary and secondary levels. The national league is an independent, bipartisan nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to accelerate innovation in education and ESUSD’s inclusion will have a direct and positive impact on students. ESUSD was selected based on its leadership, evidence of results, innovative vision for learning, and commitment to collaboration. Our school district is honored to be selected to host the League of Innovative Schools visitation. With continued support from the El Segundo Education Foundation, parents, educators, and business and community partners, we will transform our culture of learning and continue to create innovative educational experiences.

EL SEGUNDO EDUCATION FOUNDATION Excellence in education in not only a long tradition in El Segundo, it is also a source of pride. And El Segundo should be proud! The community pulls together every year to ensure the best education is available for the students of the El Segundo Unified School District.

The support to our schools has changed and evolved over the years to address the current needs in education. In recent years, the greatest hindrance to providing an exceptional education and even maintaining current programs has been state funding. To prevent the possibility of losing programs, closing classrooms and missing opportunities for our students, the community continues the tradition of supporting our schools and maintaining pride in El Segundo by supporting the El Segundo Ed! Foundation’s yearly grant. The Ed! Foundation’s yearly grant of $1.8 million will continue to support ESUSD’s excellent schools and provide opportunities where Every Student Wins!. Our students are able to tap into avenues of creativity through art and music, explore new technology by building robots and coding programs, exercising their bodies and minds with physical education classes, start their career

Every Student Wins!

paths early in engineering, business and biomedical science, as well as receive the social - emotional support and guidance they need to engage in school activities, plan for their future and develop self-confidence. These types of programs and many others have resulted in our district being recognized and awarded for innovation, leadership, academic excellence, responsiveness to the needs of young adolescents, and social equity. With continued yearly support from businesses, residents and families, the Ed! Foundation is confident that all essential academic programs in our schools will continue to thrive, and our students will receive the chance to take advantage of a competitive education that boosts them above the average standards set by the State of California. The Ed! Foundation is the only organization able to fund programs for ESUSD and $0.93 of every dollar donated goes back to the schools. Ed! is only as strong as the yearly support and donations it receives. Thank you to all the families, community members, and businesses who believe in the importance of education and continue to support our schools.

WISEBURN USD stands as a

vibrant and sought-after district known in the South Bay for its more than 123 years of outstanding, educational successes. Made up of eight schools in a connected and caring community, WUSD boasts high achieving, award winning schools, safe and clean facilities, balanced by future focused educational programs that offer personalized experiences for all students. Partnered with the prominent Da Vinci High Schools, WUSD serves more than 4,200 students annually. With graduating 8th grade students boasting an 84% proficiency rate in English Language Arts on 2019 California State testing, WUSD surpassed both State and neighboring districts averages further highlighting the exceptional education provided in the Wiseburn Unified School District. While each of the WUSD schools has enjoyed numerous honors and awards over the last decade, all district schools proudly display the coveted California Distinguished School Award, the California Department of Education Gold Ribbon School Award for both Dana Middle School and Burnett Elementary, and a 3rd recognition as a National Schools to Watch at Dana Middle School. In the area of social-emotional learning, all district schools received the highest level of recognition by the 2019 California Coalition for Positive Behavior Supports. Awards honor the outstanding work of district educators and staff, but also attract the support of generous partners to include Chevron, Boeing, the Cotsen Foundation, the Wiseburn Education Foundation and more in expanding learning options for staff and students. Staff, too, have earned honors and recognitions. National Mathematics Teacher of the Year, Maria Garcia, and Northrop Grumman Foundation Teaching Fellow and Project Lead the Way Teacher of the Year for California, Andy De Seriere, continue to challenge their students daily in the middle school. Former Dana Principal, Dr. Aileen Harbeck, recognized as California Middle School Principal of the Year and National Principal of the Year finalist, now leads the district in the area of curriculum and instruction. Three elementary teachers Jennifer Williams, Lorrie Cariaga, and Heidi Obermeyer were chosen by the Cotsen Foundation as Teacher Mentors guiding the work of some 24 teachers in the area of Mathematics and Reading across the WUSD 20

district. The learning never stops in Wiseburn and the support of generous donors with State and local awards for outstanding work speak to this important effort. The WUSD is known for its exceptional facilities. Such facilities support excellent educational opportunities with elementary students engaging in research and inquiry projects related to both the Next Generation Science Standards and the new social studies-history framework, and students in all grade levels engage in musical instruction incorporating rhythm and beat in the earliest years to outstanding orchestra courses and music editing classes in the middle school. Early engineering through Project Lead the Way is growing in all schools with units focused on design, modeling, robotics, and even infection detection. With a 1:1 technology base in all classrooms, students have the option to accelerate their learning with 24x7 access to numerous academic and learning management system programs. Tech, workshopbased learning environments, core standards focused instruction, hands-on learning, and a spotlight on music development for all students combine to make WUSD students truly college and career ready as they matriculate to the Da Vinci High Schools. EL SEGUNDO - THE BEST PLACE TO DO BUSINESS

access to the airport, freeways and beaches, the City of El Segundo offers businesses a package of amenities, incentives, services and other programs that can’t be beat.

INCENTIVES AND RESOURCES As a full-service city with an approachable staff that puts its constituents first, El Segundo is able to ensure the delivery of superior business-friendly services with a proactive, personalized focus and attention to the needs of businesses and residents alike. El Segundo has a favorable tax structure that not only features some of the lowest business taxes in the region, but also offers unique sales tax credit incentives that can reduce those fees even further. A 40% tax credit based on sales tax generated in one year is available. This credit may be used to offset up to 100% of the business license tax liability in the year after being reported. NO PROPERTY OR PARKING TAXES As a no/low property tax city, El Segundo does not and has never levied its own municipal property tax. El Segundo’s allocation from the County is 6.4% of $1 per $100 of assessed valuation. The City has also never levied parking taxes. PERMITTING City departments provide streamlined permitting and plan check processing that avoid typical delays found in many other municipalities, and include a range of plan review services to best meet customer expectations. Planning and Building Safety staff serve as customer advocates to assist in completing the development process. In El Segundo, customers are not required to submit plans to each of the departments separately. Plans go to a single point of contact – Planning and Building Safety. Several departments are involved in the plan check and approval process, but one permit is issued with approvals from all of the departments.

Along with over-the-counter and regular plan check, the City also offers: APPOINTMENT PLAN CHECK (APC) This process involves scheduling an appointment to review plans with the City’s development team made up of representatives of all the City departments involved in the development review process. The concept is to bring the City to the customer rather than the traditional approach of having the customer navigate through the organization by going from department to department and having to wait an undetermined amount of time for feedback. During the appointment, City staff benefit by being able to coordinate requirements and

EL SEGUNDO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

promote cross-training. Customers benefit by being able to hear from all the departments all at once, thus removing the possibility of conflicting corrections between departments while being able to make necessary revisions to the plans. ACCELERATED PLAN CHECK This offers customers an optional, expedited plan check service conducted by staff after regular business hours (with additional fees required). In this process, staff from each of the departments complete their plan checks usually within two to three weeks. Additionally, the City allows concurrent processing of planning entitlements and plan check review that can reduce processing time by as much as 50%. Furthermore, the City provides a one-day inspection service for all projects under construction, with night and weekend inspections available (for an additional fee) for very large-scale or time-sensitive projects.

THE CHAMBER MESSAGE FROM MARSHA HANSEN, CEO/PRESIDENT

I read a great quote recently…”The most revolutionary

thing we can do is introduce people to each other.” I remember when I was new to El Segundo and working as the Director of Sales at the DoubleTree Hotel on Grand Avenue. I was fresh out of Purdue in the Midwest and feeling a bit overwhelmed in Southern California. I reached out to the community, joined the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce and incredible community leaders begin to introduce me to people. They introduced me to city leaders, community volunteers, educational leaders, elected representatives and residents, all who made a wonderful impact on our community. I promised myself that as I grew in my career, I would strive to always do the same.

Introductions…connections…collaboration…it’s what we do at the Chamber every day. Our Chamber is made up of incredible partners ranging from Fortune 500 companies to innovative start-ups to successful “mom & pops” -- all working together to make El Segundo a productive and wonderful place to be. We take pride in bringing these partners together and creating a synergy to truly be a place where “Big Ideas Take Off.”

Ways We Serve Our Members MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES The Chamber features several marketing opportunities to allow you to choose what best fits your business plan. From your free listing and advertising opportunities in the annual Community & Business Directory to marketing opportunities on our website, weekly email marketing as well as posting your daily specials on our social media sites and more, the Chamber offers a unique opportunity to get your business in front of your potential customers. And most of these opportunities are included with your annual membership!

COMMUNITY DIRECTORY Each year the Chamber publishes a Community Directory which is a comprehensive resource guide and a first-class advertising tool. All Chamber members are listed by name and business category. The Directory is delivered to every home and business in El Segundo as well as to hotels for 46

During a visit to our city, you can enjoy a stroll along our tree-lined streets, visit the Toyota Sports Center (the LA Kings training facility), watch a South Bay Lakers game at the Los Angeles Lakers headquarters, dine at world-class restaurants, listen to a 1925 Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ at the Old Town Music Hall while you watch a classic movie and even drop in for a drawing class at ESMoA. Need to pick up some awesome toys? Head over to The Toy Store at Mattel’s international headquarters! You can even step back in time on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a ride in a classic car at the Automobile Driving Museum!

The partnership of our members enables the El Segundo Chamber to support our business community through legislative advocacy, educational opportunities, networking events, community events and more! We invite you to join us to connect, collaborate and succeed.

Marsha Hansen CEO/President

their guests. In addition, the directory is mailed frequently to those requesting information about El Segundo as well as to real estate offices and more! You can also find the Directory available electronically on our website at www. elsegundochamber.com.

EVENTS AND MORE! Each year the Chamber presents several events including Networking Mixers hosted by our gracious Chamber members including Chevron, Mattel and Citizens Business Bank just to name a few. Our annual the State of the City with our Mayor as well as other events with our elected officials are great opportunities to hear what is happening in El Segundo and beyond. The Expo and “Sip & Savor” has become one of the most anticipated events of the year and the Salute to the Military event honors those who have served and are still serving with inspirational speakers and opportunities to learn about organizations that support our Veterans. Of course, the second Sunday of December will find Main Street lined with families as our 55th Annual Holiday Parade, presented by the El Segundo Chamber kicks off the holiday season in style! Check out the Calendar of Events on our website at www.elsegundochamber.com and watch our Facebook page for frequent updates.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT The Chamber works closely with the City of El Segundo’s Economic Development staff to attract business to El Segundo, which means more jobs within our community. The Chamber has a representative on the El Segundo Economic Development Advisory Council who facilitates collaboration between the City and the Chamber. We also work with members of our Downtown businesses community and the City of El Segundo to bring awareness to our beautiful Downtown area.

PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD Greg Carpenter

Greg Carpenter is an alumnus of El Segundo High School and California State University Long Beach where he studied Geography and received his Master’s in Public Administration. Early in his career he worked for the City of Long Beach and Lawndale honing his skill as a first-class public planner. The City of El Segundo was fortunate when they hired Greg in 2008 as a Planning Manager. Greg served the City and his hometown where he followed his passion for public planning and was appointed El Segundo City Manager in 2012 leading the City of El Segundo with knowledge, skill and grace and making an impact on the community until his retirement in 2019. We honor Greg Carpenter for his leadership, collaboration and service to the El Segundo community with the Public Service Award.

BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR AWARD Raytheon

A great American success story began on July 7, 1922. One of the earliest technology startups, their revolutionary innovation redesigned a device that eliminated one of the cumbersome batteries that previously 48

powered home radios. Raytheon quickly moved to the forefront of innovation in the electronics industry during World War II by supplying 80 percent of the magnetron tubes used in the U.S. and British radars. Post World War II, Raytheon also began offering civilian products, the microwave being the most famous. Raytheon’s innovation continued in the 1960’s as they supported the Apollo missions. The company built the computer that guided the Apollo space vehicles on their journey, and its on-board microwave tube transmitted radio and TV signals to earth, enabling millions to witness history. Raytheon continues its legacy of innovation and is a major U.S. defense contractor and industrial corporation with core manufacturing concentrations in weapons and military and commercial electronics. The company is the largest employer in El Segundo and is a crucial part of our business and residential community. Raytheon is a long supporter of the El Segundo Education Foundation and El Segundo schools. We congratulate Raytheon as the Business of the Year.

2019/2020 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Alex Abad

The 2019/2020 El Segundo Citizen of the Year has made a tremendous impact on the South Bay and El Segundo communities. Alex Abad is a successful entrepreneur who built a multi-million dollar commercial cleaning business. He sold his corporation in 2003 to pursue his passion in Real Estate and quickly became a top producing agent. Alex is the founder of Commissions for Education -- a unique organization made up of Real Estate Agents, Brokers, Escrow Officers and more who have the local communities’ interests at heart by committing a minimum of 1% of all their earnings to our schools. One hundred percent of the donations from each transaction benefit the Education Foundation in the district where the transaction took place. The El Segundo Education Foundation is a recipient of Alex’s generosity, donating over $100,000 to the Foundation through the Ed! Gala and the sale of Tower 60 hats. This incredible commitment to the community led to the formation of the Tower 60 Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is simple: ”to be a fervent force in giving and goodwill.” El Segundo’s Tower 60 lifeguard station has stood as a symbol of hope and helpfulness at El Segundo beach and now serves as the goodwill ambassador for the Foundation’s mission. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Tower 60 on El Segundo Beach was painted pink on Oct. 5, 2019. This beacon of pink hope not only provided awareness for breast cancer and research, but 100% of the proceeds raised benefited the City of Hope, one of the nation’s leading cancer research facilities. Alex brought the community of El Segundo and the South Bay together with the support of Supervisor Janice Hahn to “Paint it Pink!” It was truly a collaborative effort led by Alex’s vision and generosity. El Segundo and the South Bay are a better place because of Alex’s commitment and love for our communities. The Chamber would like to congratulate the 2019/2020 El Segundo Citizen of the Year, Alex Abad. EL SEGUNDO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Fresh, handmade pastas and delightful dishes, using healthy, unprocessed ingredients at a price accessible to everyone, is their highest priority. They take pride in supporting the local business community (partnering with the likes of Smoky Hollow Roasters, Smoky Hollow Baking Company, El Segundo Brewing Company), and farmers from the El Segundo Farmers Market play key roles. Among the bounty of offerings: family-friendly, where kids 12 and under receive complimentary meals on Mondays; tasting menu Tuesdays; wine tasting Wednesdays; and live music on weekends. HAVANA SANDWICH COMPANY Havana Sandwich Company builds its “cubano” with a cracker-wheat specially made by a local Cuban bakery. Many of the sandwich meats are marinated in a secret mojo criollo (Creole sauce) recipe. Sandwiches are then toasted just like they are in Havana, using a sandwich press called a “Plancha,” which fuses the juicy flavors. The end result is a sandwich that satisfies like no hoagie or sub could ever hope to. Impress friends by ordering an off-menu special like the “medianoche” (midnight sandwich), a Havana favorite. Catering is also available, and free delivery is also offered within El Segundo.

ARTS CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT With each passing year, Downtown builds its reputation as a cultural arts destination with its own art museum, a vintage movie house, several galleries and an annual Art Walk that draws huge crowds from all over the region.

El Segundo Art Walk

ESMoA

Downtown’s most exciting cultural and entertainment happening celebrates its fifth year in 2020 with expanded offerings and a staging area on Main Street featuring a beer garden, live music, food trucks and more.

The El Segundo Museum of Art (ESMoA) is a Downtown landmark and hub for the burgeoning local art scene. Founded by Brian and Eva Sweeney and curated by Bernhard Zunkeler and guest curators, this innovative non-profit “art laboratory” holds three thematic experiences (exhibits) each year with paintings, sculptures and video/digital works from various periods and regions. It is open to the public Thursday through Saturday, but also available for educational and special events by advanced appointment.

The El Segundo Art Walk (ESAW) provides a unique opportunity for creative businesses to open their doors for studio tours. Each unique venue acts as a popup gallery displaying original works from an array of talented Los Angeles-based artists. ESAW draws large crowds to Downtown and Smoky Hollow on summer third Thursdays! For more information, go to www.elsegundoartwalk.com D18 • DOWNTOWN GUIDE

ARTS, CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT

Old Town Music Hall: 50 Plus Years of Vintage Glory

El Segundo’s longest-standing cultural venue, the Old Town Music Hall opened in 1968 and remains a treasured cultural landmark not just in the South Bay but also regionally. The schedule features vintage classics from both the silent and early sound eras. Silent films are accompanied by the incomparable 1925 Mighty Wurlitzer wind-powered pipe organ – allowing patrons to experience these films as audiences did before the “talkies” took over. The OTMH also hosts concerts with jazz, ragtime and other musical styles from the past.

El Segundo Performing Arts Center

The original 1927 El Segundo High School auditorium enjoyed a rebirth when the theater was remodeled in 2011. With seating for 830 people, the venue features state-of-the-art sound, video projection and lighting systems. To add to the guest experience, the house has been redecorated in a style reminiscent of the era of construction. The theater has hosted local drama productions and shows from such notable South Bay companies as the Golden State Pops Orchestra.
