Fostering A Love Of Language

Author publishes second bilingual children’s book BY JILL NOSSA

JNOSSA@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Local children’s author and linguist Judy Martialay recently published her second book, presenting a new opportunity to teach children to become bilingual. Her latest book, Bonjour! Let’s Learn French, is a follow-up to the award-winning ¡HOLA! Let’s Learn Spanish, and gives children ages 6 to 10 a fun way to learn basic French

words and phrases at home. “More parents are realizing that an early start to learning a foreign language has great advantages,” said Martialay, a resident of Sea Cliff. “But, only 25 percent of elementary schools, public or private, offer any kind of foreign language instruction.” And, she added, when budgets are cut, “foreign languages are always the first thing to go.” A retired foreign language teacher

from the Bethpage School District, where she taught for more than 30 years, Martialay has been using her skills to inspire students for decades and has devoted many years to public advocacy for the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers. Martialay has written drafts for five books in the series, which began with

200 Kids Treated To Milk & Cookies With Santa

On a snowy evening in Glen Cove, the Glen Cove Youth Bureau hosted its annual Milk & Cookies with Santa event. More than 200 children and their families were treated to a fun-filled evening featuring storytelling, a visit with Santa Claus, delicious cookies donated by Panera Bread and Glen Cove Hospital Northwell Health and coffee and hot chocolate provided by Starbucks. Best of all, each child received a special present, thanks to the generosity of the Glen Cove community. “Each year the Thomas and Alexa Potter are Youth Bureau’s excited to meet Santa at the Milk & Cookies Youth Bureau’s annual Milk & with Santa event is a sweet success Cookies with Santa event. as children look forward to attending this Glen Cove holiday tradition,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello. “I am grateful to our Youth Bureau team and our Youth Board, especially Sandra Potter and her staff who organized our event, wrapped all of the presents, coordinated donations and even volunteered to read,” said Spiro Tsirkas, executive director of the Glen Cove Youth Bureau. —Submitted by the City of Glen Cove

American Legion Meetings Postponed

The Glen Cove Teachers’ Association and its retiree chapter continue to support the Glen Cove Youth Bureau with its annual holiday toy drive. The toys were given to the children of the community at the Milk & Cookies with Santa event, held at Glen Cove City Hall in mid-December. Pictured are Karen Ferguson, president of the GCTA; Spiro Tsirkas, executive director of the Youth Bureau; Sandra Potter, program coordinator at the Youth Bureau and Rosemary Cantanzariti, president of the GCTA Retiree Chapter.

The Glen Cove American Legion Post 76 monthly meetings will be canceled for the months of January, February and March due to cold weather, which would be dangerous due to age and frailty of the attending members. Members can expect the meetings to resume in April at the Glen Cove Senior Center.

The North Shore Historical Museum (NSHM) was packed to capacity recently for a concert of Christmas music from Colonial times, featuring Emily Bader on harp, recorder and baroque violin, and Michael Goudket on harp and percussion. The performance was underwritten by United World Foundation Linda Darby, NSHM board member and coordinator of lectures and presentations, introduced the musical duo who were dressed in colonial costumes. They performed Christmas carols from the many traditions of the early Americans, including from the English, French, German and Dutch traditions. Then the audience was asked to participate in a sing along of “Silent Night.” A brief history of each instrument and song was given, which made for a very interesting and entertaining performance. A delightful afternoon tea, prepared by board members, was served before and after the performance. NSHM’s mission is to preserve the history of the North Shore of Long Island through the stewardship of its collections and historic structure, the 1907 Justice Court House, and to engage the public and to interpret the history of the North Shore, particularly the area known as the Gold Coast, though exhibits, lectures and other programs. NSHM is located at 140 Glen St. in Glen Cove. For further information visit www.nshmgc.org or call NSHM director Amy Driscoll 516-801-1191.

Happy Holidays!

178836 C

To all our Glen Cove Community, I always love the holidays! It’s such a special time for families, friends and neighbors to celebrate the wonders of the season. It is an opportunity to worship, to give thanks, and to help those who are less fortunate. A time to share a meal, share a story, and stop to remember the importance of being together. As my family and I gather once again for our annual holiday celebration, I would like to thank all of you for your support. It means so much to me. As each new year begins, I am increasingly grateful to you for investing your trust and confidence in me as your Supervising City Court Judge. In the twenty nine years since I first came on board as Associate Judge, I have consistently strived to rise to the challenges of the court with fairness and integrity. Whenever you spot me around town – at City Hall, at the Senior Center, at the National Night Out Against Crime or enjoying the music at our downtown concert series – please be sure to say hello. You, our citizens, are what make this city a wonderful place to live and work. I look forward to serving another year as your Glen Cove Supervising City Court Judge. I hope you and your family have a wonderful and blessed holiday season! Best Wishes, The Hon. Richard J. McCord and Family

LOVE from page 1 her two strongest foreign languages, Spanish and French. Each book takes about two years to produce, since they include Martialay’s illustrations, recipes, activities and a downloadable audio component. She has drafts of books for learning Italian, Arabic and Chinese that she hopes to “dust off and update” but for now is happy to promote the finished products. “Children love a story,” said Martialay. “The book captivates kids with an entertaining story that teaches French and introduces them to the culture of France. There is a variety of activities that encourages them to use the French that they learned, including a skit, Culture Corner and a song.” She said the book is written in a way that makes it easy for anyone interested in learning French, for both the children as well as the parents, grandparents or other care givers reading to them. “I want [readers] to have a pleasant experience and get a taste for the language so that they want to continue learning,” said Martialay, who said she believes language learning in this country has “gone backwards” since she was a child.

“It’s just not a priority in this country,” she said, noting that only 16 states require high school students to study a foreign language, and many only have a two-year minimum requirement. “Two years is not long enough to produce marketable skills,” said Martialay. “When kids learn early, they truly have a chance to become proficient.” She believes that part of the problem could be the false perception that the rest of the world speaks English; however, she said, while millions around the world may be learning English, as much as 75 percent of the world does not speak or understand English proficiently. And she stresses that going beyond basic phrases and reaching proficiency has important benefits, including getting to know someone from another country. “It’s very rewarding to form a personal relationship with someone—you can’t do that through an interpretor,” she said. “Having a personal bond is the basis of a good business relationship, plus when you learn a language, you learn about the customs and culture of that country." Down the line, she said, having proficiency in a second language can put a candidate ahead in a job, as it is

Author Judy Martialay

one of the top eight qualities employers look for upon hiring. And, starting young is also important. “Children up to age 12 have the capacity to acquire native pronunciation of words,” said Martialay. “And when we learn other languages, our English improves and we become smarter, with increased concentration and enhanced problem-solving skills. Also, it helps to stave off dementia by five years because the executive function [of the brain] gets a workout.” Martialay noted that when parents show an interest in what their children are studying, it can further enhance their learning. The book comes with downloadable activity sheets, recipes and a craft, in order to help create a deeper connection to the language. Bonjour! HONORED from page 1 mom Maggie Rup and all of the families who supported the team members throughout the season before presenting each one with a certificate. “Thanks to all of you for getting the kids to practice three nights a week and Saturdays,” he said. “I know it’s a stress on every day life, but you’ve got champions now.” Several of the Pee Wee Cardinal cheerleaders were also at the meeting, and had the honor of leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. During the meeting, the council voted to amend a previous resolution regarding the eligibility of service credits for certain city employees. On Dec. 13, 2011, the Glen Cove City Council adopted a resolution suspending health benefits for specific employees. The current resolution will allow the city to count periods of service in these non-benefits eligible positions toward the eligibility requirements for continuing health insurance in retirement. City controller Sandra Clarson explained it is merely a housekeeping resolution. The council also passed a resolution authorizing the city to accept a land grant in the Village Square plaza,

he hamlet of Oyster Bay is getting ready for a new flavor as 2 spring preps for its grand opening. The modern American brasserie at 2 Spring St. in Oyster Bay has been undergoing renovations while training staff and refining its menu for months and has finally set a grand opening date of Jan. 10. With a menu created by executive chef Jesse Schenker, who formerly operated recette and The Gander in New York City, 2 spring will bring a combination of fresh seafood, premium farm meats and seasonal produce to the neighborhood, with as many items as possible sourced locally from the North Fork of Long Island. Schenker and his wife, Lindsay— who also helps run the business in the role of controller—relocated to the Oyster Bay area last year with their young, growing family in order to open the restaurant along with Claudia and Michael Taglich of Oyster Bay. They purchased and renovated the two-story building right in the heart of the hamlet. Appetizer choices on the dinner menu include a chopped salad with sweet potato, cabbage, walnuts, cucumber and carrots with a dijon vinaigrette and a cod fritter with lamb ragu and curry aioli, and the selection of small plates includes grilled prawns and roasted octopus. A spicy lobster is available for a large plate, as is a Fisherman’s Pot with clams, prawn, lobster, ocean broth and grilled bread. 2 spring also offers a raw bar, and a variety of options are available for lunch and dessert. 2 spring is now taking reservations for Jan.10 and on; reservations can be made at www.2springstreet.com, by email at reservations@2springstreet.com or by calling 516-624-2411.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Voters Were Not Uninformed In response to Mr. Levy’s letter to the editor on Dec. 13, as a past candidate for the Glen Cove City Council and NY State Assembly I must disagree with your logic about the mayoral election in Glen Cove. I concur with your view point about the high taxes under past Mayor Tom Suozzi. He had no other choice but to address the issues in reference to financial stability. The previous mayor before Tom Suozzi put us in a financial mess, and we were at junk bond ratings. Tom Suozzi’s administration got Glen Cove out of a financial mess and brought us back to AAA bond ratings for the first time since 1978. I disagree with your opinion that Ralph Suozzi also raised city taxes. Under his administration, he kept the city taxes below the 2 percent property tax cap and also balanced the city budget and complied with the State Comptroller’s reports. One of Mr. Levy’s points is that Mayor Spinello put forth during his administration all the projects that were stalled during previous administrations. In my opinion Mayor Spinello pushed too quickly these overly dense projects such as RXR Corporation’s downtown and waterfront projects and Livingston Electric’s project. Under Ralph Suozzi’s administration although he accepted political contributions from Livingston, he made it clear that Livingston could not develop more than 90 units, and he passed a hilltop ordinance protecting the neighboring properties. The same applied to the Regency in Glen Cove. Under the prior developer’s plan in the downtown, there were only 110 units which included the property where Panera Bread stands. Under RXR’s plan however, the zoning board granted a variance to build a total of 146 units. Unfortunately, Mayor Spinello’s administration rushed through these projects and

repealed the hilltop ordinances protecting neighboring houses and allowed more units to be built from before. Another issue of outgoing mayor Spinello was his Industrial Development Agency (IDA) gave tax breaks to companies such as RXR, which will cost Glen Cove in the years to come if revoked $90 million. Under the Ralph Suozzi administration his IDA appointments gave the Regency a 40- year tax exemption, which means they do not pay taxes. Based on the IDA’s tax giveaways, I wonder how this benefits the City of Glen Cove considering that these are luxury apartments, and only 10 percent would be reserved for affordable units. I was in attendance at a city council meeting when out of town employees from a local union packed the meeting. How again is this for economic development when they do not pay taxes and all of those employees do not live in Glen Cove? The question is how is this development beneficial to the City of Glen Cove? We already have too many restaurants, and many local businesses that have been in Glen Cove are struggling and, it would appear that many franchises and big chain stores benefit. What are we going to do to assist these small mom and pop businesses that have been the pillars of Glen Cove? We need to treat this like a small town where small businesses provide services for local residents and the surrounding communities. Our city needs to have a hometown feeling instead of relying on big chain stores. If these projects are finalized, the city would face several problems such as traffic and a requirement for more services such as police and fire protection and sanitation and sewers. For example, every few years insurance industry experts rate the municipal fire protection per population, and in some cases if more buildings are constructed it may

Second St., Mineola, NY 11501. require additional apparatus for fire protection and maybe in some cases new substations. This may result in an increase in your home owners’ insurance policy and local city taxes because of new equipment. The current Spinello administration relied too much on building and construction permits to balance the budget which the New York State Comptroller in his reports stated that this was not a fiscally sound way to foresee future budgets, and this could result in possible shortcomings. The voters were not uninformed; they were just unenthused about the candidates. I find Mr. Levy’s comment about voter ignorance an insult to the voters’ (including myself ) intelligence. In response to Mr. Levy’s analogy about being satisfied with Spinello, I would like to know how he conducted this survey. It takes a professional pollster to do random samplings. I disagree with Mr. Levy’s logic that political appointments were based on loyalty. Under Ralph Suozzi’s administration he appointed for example a former city councilman who was once on the Republican ticket in the ‘80s when Ralph’s late father who once was mayor. Ralph appointed him to city attorney. Also Ralph’s former deputy mayor was also a Republican who did a great job as deputy mayor. What about

Mayor Spinello? Mayor Spinelllo’s appointees were loyalists. Many, such as the planning, zoning and variance board members were either former city councilmen, or former running team mates. As a past candidate for city council, my agenda was to revoke IDA decisions, abolish the IDA, and change the city charter to allow the voters to vote for half of the planning, zoning and variance board members. As a past candidate I have heard people tell me why do I not run on the major political party lines? The answer is, The Green Party does not believe in fusion candidates. We run our own candidates and we do not accept the other party lines. Voters tend to be creatures of habit, in my opinion. They tend to vote for the two major political parties because, they feel third party candidates do not stand a chance of winning. When the voters vote for when they cast their ballots for the two major parties they get what they deserve. People should vote on principles rather than party lines. In conclusion I wish Mayor Spinello good luck in his future endeavors. Because this election was won by only three votes it tells you that Glen Cove was divided. It is now up to Mayor Elect Tenke to unite Glen Cove and that the majority on the city council do the same. —Jeffery Peress

Escape From Brooklyn

New York Islanders set to return to Long Island with new arena at Belmont BY STEVE MOSCO SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

It’s official: The New York Islanders are skating back home. After about five seasons at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center plagued with bad ice, obstructed views and diminishing ticket sales, the team that originally called Nassau Coliseum home joined Governor Andrew Cuomo to announce a $1 billion redevelopment plan at Belmont Park to include a brand-new hockey arena. The Islanders won the bid over a local soccer club. “The Islanders are back where they belong,” said Cuomo at Belmont Park on Dec. 20, where he was joined by team owner Jon Ledecky, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Long Island music legend Billy Joel and Islanders players John Tavares and Cal Clutterbuck. “When the Islanders left, they left a hole in the heart of Long Island. Today is a win-win-win for the community.” The project will feature an 18,000seat arena for the Islanders, a new 435,000-square-foot retail and entertainment complex, a new hotel and other community amenities. Cuomo also announced that the Long Island Rail Road will develop a plan to expand service to the Belmont Park Station for events year-round, adding that he expects the arena project to create 12,300 construction jobs and 3,100 permanent jobs. “With the state-of-the-art redevelopment of Belmont Park, we are adding a crown jewel to the economic resurgence on Long Island. The return of the Islanders is exciting for all fans, bringing the storied franchise back to its rightful home,” said Cuomo. “The creation of this entertainment destination will bring visitors from near and far, as we continue to transform the region and strengthen our economic momentum on Long Island.” As part of the Belmont Park arena deal, the Islanders will have a 49-year lease with renewal options, valued at $40 million for the full build-out. Local officials said the project would signal an economic boom for the

Elmont community, with Nassau County Executive-elect Laura Curran pledging to do her part on that end. “As county executive, I’ll make sure we work with the local community and stakeholders to make sure the area is developed with their input,” she said. “Economic development at Belmont will benefit all county taxpayers.” Officials expect the project to be completed in 2020, but as for where the Islanders will play during the construction process, Cuomo said that is entirely up to Bettman, who has gone on record as saying the Coliseum is “not a viable option” for the team. But as for the arena project, Bettman said, “If you are an Islanders fan or an Islanders player, you have a lot to be excited about.” While returning to the Coliseum for a short stay remains open for debate, team captain John Tavares echoed the sentiments of many fans in attendance who will gladly welcome the team back to the island of its origin. “The Islanders are called the Islanders for a reason,” he said. “This is really where the team belongs.”

Belmont Arena At A Glance Along with an NHL-ready arena that will serve as the permanent home of the New York Islanders, the Belmont mixed-use facility will host other major events, including concerts, college sports, conferences, family events and programming year-round. The project will also encompass:

Retail, Recreation and Dining

The redevelopment will include 435,000-square-feet of retail, recreation and hospitality space. The retail village will be composed of pedestrian boulevards and squares, lined with stores and boutiques occupied by international, regional and local brands. Dining and entertainment will range from sports bars to fine dining and prepared foods for take-away and will be enhanced by leisure and athletic activities, such as a boutique movie theatre and intimate live performance venues.

Community Recreation Area and Innovation Space

The project includes nearly six acres of outdoor recreation space and up to 10,000-square-feet of community space to be developed in consultation with the local community. The development will integrate the recreation area into

the Elmont neighborhood, as well as create a green corridor and bike path buffering the residential areas adjacent to the development.

Full-Service Hotel

The new 200-250 key, full-service hotel at Belmont Park will feature amenities, retail and dining options as well as conference and meeting spaces.

Gateway to Long Island

The complex will feature new signage, public art and landscape elements designed to foster a sense of identity and arrival with access points to the Belmont Long Island Rail Road platforms. The LIRR will develop a plan to modify service to accommodate New Yorkers for sporting and special events.

Parking

Additional parking will be developed to accommodate the increased traffic volume, including dedicated retail, hotel and arena parking located below the concourse level, as well as areas for ride-sharing, taxis and private shuttles. The pick-up and drop-off zones will be configured to maximize loading capacity and minimize queues without burdening local neighborhoods with additional traffic.

January Movie Previews BY CHERYL WADSWORTH EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

J

anuary is here along with colder temperatures, harsher weather and a slew of resolutions to be fulfilled or broken. The New Year also brings new movies to choose from. Unfortunately, January typically releases movies which aren’t critically acclaimed and have much lower expectations in the box office. Reasons for this vary, but not having much chance for awards as critics have a short memory come next December, colder months, lack of funds after splurging for the holidays as well as too much competition from the holiday releases can all play a role in fewer hits this time of year. However, critics have been known to be wrong and hopefully the following previews will bring smiles to your faces and a warm retreat from the cold.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure (NR)

On Jan. 26, Maze Runner: The Death Cure opens. The film is based on the trilogy of books by James Dashner and is the direct sequel to Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials from 2015 and the last of the movies. Wes Ball directs with Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Dexter Darden starring. The main character, Thomas, finds himself leading his peers on their final maze, which will bring answers to anyone who comes out alive. A good action, dystopian-type movie but you really need to have read the books or seen the first two movies to understand fully what is going on.

The Commuter (PG-13)

Liam Neeson returns on Jan. 12 in The Commuter. Directed by Jaume ColletSerra the film also stars Vera Farmiga, Sam Neill and Patrick Wilson. Neeson is in a familiar role of a man who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and must save the day. A normal everyday commute turns into a deadly puzzle that must be solved timely or Neeson risks the death of himself and all the other passengers aboard the train. A non-stop action/ drama.

While I love seeing famous sights when traveling, the best part of a trip is spending time with local people and getting to know them. That opportunity came this summer when I participated in an English-immersion program for Spaniards called Vaughan Town, named for the founder Richard Vaughan. The town brings together Spaniards and native English speakers in an English-only environment for six days. We “Anglos” were there to provide conversation with the Spanish speakers, who already know some English. We paid for transportation, but our room and board was covered while we were in the program. I sat with Carmen, a young woman from Barcelona who is a design engineer at an automotive company. We chatted for the two hours it took to get to our hotel. Carmen said that although she felt her writing in English was good, her speaking needed to improve. We were 10 Spanish and 14 Anglos. The Spanish came from all over the country and the Anglos from places such as New York, Florida, Chicago, Wales, England, Ireland and Abu Dhabi. The six days were a combination of numerous one-on-ones, group presentations and lots of fun. My first one-on-one, however, was a disaster. My Spaniard, who shall remain nameless, told me he really needed to listen better and then proceeded to talk…and talk…and talk, in endless detail about his work. I tried to keep my eyes from glazing over. That encounter was the only difficult one and I am happy to report that by the end of the six days when he and I had another one-on-one that his nerves had calmed down, his English had improved a great deal and we were able to laugh about our first meeting. Belmonte is located in the La Mancha region. This is Don Quixote country and from our hotel we could see a castle on one hill and three windmills on another. We had chosen the Belmonte site from a few others partially based on the look of the hotel, and we weren’t disappointed. Palacio del Infante Don Juan Manuel Hotel Spa, originally a monastery, had

Madrid Belmonte

been cleverly renovated into a four-star establishment with marble floors, air conditioning and very comfortable beds, plus a swimming pool. Some of the original building was left in its crumbled state giving something of a feel of an archaeological site, particularly the corridor where we walked out to the pool. Angela Walmsley, from Lancashire, England, said she felt completely at ease from the

get-go. “The program is exceptionally well organized, expectations of participants are clear and the small team from Vaughan provided guidance, support and a wonderful energy throughout the week,” she said. Julian and Giovanna were our leaders. Julian, our emcee, kept us going with activities. He pulled four of us together to do a Monty Python skit. Another time

we were divided into groups and told to arrange ourselves as great moments in history and great paintings, taking photos to be viewed later. Howard, the head of the Civil Liberties Union in Florida, talked about American government and handed out copies of the Constitution. I taught a few Yiddish words that are essential for anyone coming to New York, such as schlep and chutzpah. Sabera, from London, led us in a values clarification exercise. Giovanna kept us organized and on schedule. When a group of Anglos, myself included, came back late for our one-on-one from an impromptu visit to the castle, she let us know she was not pleased. “But the taxi never came back for us,” we pleaded like naughty children. We loved getting to know both the Spanish and Anglos and at every meal sat with different people. Jacqueline and Julie were colleagues from Chicago, both teaching at the same middle school. Julie had been to previous Vaughan Town programs and Jackie joined her on this trip. “I would not have been courageous enough to do this on my own,” said Jackie, “it was my first time participating in a program like this.” For Jackie, this trip became more than an opportunity to experience another culture. “It changed my life,” she said. Just five weeks before, Jackie had undergone a bi-lateral mastectomy and up until the last minute was not sure if she would be able to make the trip. “This

was very healing for me—physically, spiritually and emotionally. I came back to the states a different person, and my friends commented on how healthy I looked and acted. The support I received from new friends—strangers prior to this—was amazing.” Carmen and I sat together again on the bus ride back to Madrid.

“What I found there in Belmonte was higher than what I was expecting...I could meet a lot of nice people with interesting lives and very good stories to tell and this helped me be motivated and immersed in the activity,” she said. “I could improve my listening and lose my fear to speak in public.” Mission accomplished.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). No one can hurt you like your own expectations can. That’s why you’re trying to get better at the life-enhancing art and science of setting reasonable expectations. Your life is a grand experiment. Observe, make a guess about what will happen, and then test your prediction. If you get it wrong, just guess again.

Solution: 22 Letters

© 2018 Australian Word Games Dist. by Creators Syndicate Inc.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You are already incredibly special so you don’t have to do anything outrageously impressive to be loved. Live like you have nothing to prove. Ordinary choices can make you happy. Even as you do the most down-to-earth thing, the infinite sky above embraces you. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Teaching isn’t telling. People will forget what they hear, but they won’t forget what they were involved with. You have knowledge to impart this week, and the more immersive your lesson, the better your students will retain it. Also, don’t be afraid to stand back and let people learn some things for themselves. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You’re not gullible, but you’re very open-minded. Salespeople will sense this, and you’ll be pitched to often this week. It’s fun to be sold -- to believe that an item or an idea is going to change your life for the better -- and even more fun to be sold on something that’s affordable. Just hold out for what really works. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Excellent manners are your passport to the world. The civility you apply in this week’s dealings will command attention and inspire reciprocity. On a related note, before you get out your wallet, consider that luxurious things can also be free things. For instance, you’ll enjoy the finery of words and beautiful social gestures. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Make note of your accomplishments and concerns in a journal. It will not only give you a sense of achievement, it will also clear your head so you don’t unload unnecessary data onto other people. Others don’t need to know the details of your world, but keeping track privately will be an essential habit for success. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Because what you say about others reveals much about you, you’re careful to keep your talk positive. This comes easily to you, but what’s more difficult is steering clear of other people’s less-complimentary narratives. Excusing yourself is always an option, and you won’t regret walking away from negativity. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You’ll be physically attuned to the world and to yourself. You’ll learn about people by watching them move. Bodies move according to the mind. Posture and social positioning will go hand in hand. Good posture begins with self-respect. Chin up, neck long, eye contact -this will lead to the making of a deal this week. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Avoid psychic leaning. You’re strong and getting stronger. The point is not to be a one-person show and handle the world without help. Rather, the aim is to be your best. It’s the same in sports as it is in life. The strong players are in the big leagues. The stronger you are, the better the team you’ll attract.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). There are those who make the mistake of choosing an aloof air as a way of seeming better than others. It’s shortsighted, shallow and lazy. When you encounter such behavior, you’ll be rewarded for rising above the nonsense. Remain open and accommodating. Much good will come of it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Feelings are a neutral form of information. There is nothing right about a feeling. There is nothing wrong about a feeling. This week, accept whatever feelings come up without judgment. From this neutral place, you can work with your emotions, taking the information they provide and using it to your advantage. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). If you want someone to remember a number, you recite just the number that matters, not the entire numeric system. This is how you should approach all dealings this week. The temptation to overinstruct and overstate things will be strong. Resist! The simple, direct approach will work brilliantly.

THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS

You’ll be refining an area of your life that’s already going moderately well. Your focus on making good things great will open opportunities in the next three months. A little daring action will stir up some magic. Your family will grow and there will be new things to appreciate in that realm, too. A different approach to health and well-being will offer fresh energy after the two-week mark. You’ll adventure in the outdoors. Somehow business deals will get made in recreational settings. An Unusual First Date Plan For The New Year With Great Benefits It’s a new year and a new you. Perhaps this means finally asking out or going on a first date with that person you have been interested in. While many people, and perhaps our commons sense would suggest that a first date may involve drinks and/or dinner, I am here to dispel that idea entirely. Now you may be thinking, shouldn’t I be doing something more romantic like a candlelit dinner or walk in the park? Simply put, you are better doing an activity that can increase the physiological arousal level of your date.

Physiological Arousal and First Date

Misattribution of arousal is a situation in which a person mislabels the arousal (or alertness) they experience and associate it with something else. What this means is that we are sometimes inaccurate in interpreting the physiological cues of our own body. People who have a high level of arousal from an activity (such as exercise), who are around a potential partner, may attribute their feelings to love for that other person.

LOVE LESSONS Marisa T. Cohen, PhD

The Research

Research has backed up these claims. One famous study, conducted by Dutton and Aron (1974), demonstrated that men on a shaky bridge misattributed the arousal they felt from the bridge to experiencing attraction to a woman they were approached by. In addition, Cohen, Waugh, and Place (1989) found that couples want to be closer to each other after watching a high arousal movie, compared to a low arousal movie. In a series of studies conducted by Aron, Normal, Aron, McKenna, and Heyman (2000), they found that couples reported an increase in relationship quality after participating in a 7-min arousing activity together,

compared to those who engaged in a mundane task together. In this particular study, the activity was an obstacle-like course in which partners were bound together and had to move a cylindrical pillow around gym mats without using their hands. The mundane task involved the partners rolling a ball on the gym mats. Excitement also improves relationship quality. Two surveys, part of the same set of studies, demonstrated that as predicted, participants indicated a strong relationship between engaging in exciting activities and experienced relationship quality.

What This Means For You

In order to incorporate increased physiological arousal in to a first date, you may want to try something a bit more subtle than binding yourself to your potential partner and participating in an obstacle course. Instead, you may want to exercise. Below are a few suggestions for first date plans, perfect for the winter weather that involve exercise in a way that will also allow you to talk and get to know your partner.

Go for a hike and enjoy the beautiful wintry scenery; go skiing/sledding/ snow-shoeing/tubing/ice skating or even start a snowball fight. Get out there, be active, and enjoy.

John Maccarone Memorial Stadium: Formerly called City Stadium, this multi-purpose sports facility was dedicated to John Maccarone, long-serving director of Glen Cove’s Parks and Recreation Department, in 1992. Located on Morris Avenue, the stadium originally began with just a few ballfields in 1947. It served the city’s midget and little league baseball programs, and later added youth football and soccer leagues, as well as hosting adult teams. The stadium has eight baseball fields, sized for different age groups, and can be configured for both soccer and football games. The facility has expanded several times since 1947, most recently in 1997. Beginning in 2017, the stadium began to host regional tournament baseball games. —Dave Nieri, GC350 History Committee

LEGAL NOTICES continued from page 11 site at WWW.DFS.NY.GOV. RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO LEAVE YOUR HOME AT THIS TIME. You have the right to stay in your home during the foreclosure process. You are not required to leave your home unless and until your property is sold at auction pursuant to a judgment of foreclosure and sale. Regardless of whether you choose to remain in your home, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY and pay property taxes in accordance with state and local law. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. 1-24-17-10-3-20184T-#178632-RP LEGAL NOTICE SUPREME COURT OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK COUNTY OF NASSAU REVERSE MORTGAGE SOLUTIONS INC., V. Boxers Take Punches, Raise Funds For Charity BY RECORD PILOT STAFF

GLENCOVE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

The Long Island Fight for Charity, Long Island’s most anticipated annual charity networking events, recently held its 14th Main Event. The event fight card listed nine bouts featuring 18 business professionals who volunteered to train to be charity boxers, including Christen “The Princess of Pain” Pellegrini of Bayville. They went toe-to-toe with opponents in the boxing ring to the cheers of a sold-out crowd. There is no other charity event like this anywhere in the country. More than 1,000 fans packed the ballroom at the Long Island Hilton to network and enjoy a tasting reception with food and beverages generously donated by over 30 local restaurants and wine and spirits companies. Over the past several months the boxers raised thousands of dollars. The boxers prepared for their bouts by training at least twice a week to start, ramping up to more frequent and even daily workouts in the final weeks leading up to the main event. While undergoing rigorous training, the boxers improved their physical stamina and, in total, lost hundreds of pounds. The Fight for Charity is recruiting boxers now for the 15th Main Event, which will take place on Monday, Nov. 19. For an application or to ask questions email info@lifightforcharity.com or call 877-240-7821. “Our volunteer boxers have distinguished themselves in their fundraising efforts this year, showing the true

meaning of dedication and selflessness in their relentless training. They have demonstrated that they had the passion and commitment to help their fellow Long Islanders in need,” said co-founder Jamie Austin.
