Mediterranean Sea in Monaco. The beautitul lady, Madeleine de Galea and her husband Edmond,lived during the age of the Frcnch Impressionists. Her Iove of dress€s made of filmy pastel fabric with gracetul flowing lines is quite in keeping with the paintings of the early twentieth century. Her portrait done by August Renoir in 1915 depicts her latest French fashion of a loose fitting filmy rose colored Bown. This portrait was just one of many done by the outstanding artists of the day. Her interest in clothinS fashioB led her to dollr noi, known as "Parisimes", "French lady dolls" or
"fashion dolls". These and automatons were a lifelong passion of hers and resulted in an €xtraordinary collection. Madeleine de Calea was bom on the island of Rdunioo which is located ,ust off the coast of the lormer F.ench colony of Madagascar. When she moved to Pads as a youd! she began her cotlection of antique dolls md automatonsAlthough her rnain interest was clolhin8 lashions, a doll had to comply with her deffnihon of what was aesthetically pleasing to her. She was not conc€m€d with the history, the maker, or the purpose, only whether the doll had a beautitul dresr hat and apprcpriate style. Blaise Bontems created the beautitul singing birds and many of these are found on the automatons made by Vichy. The combination of the Industrial Revohtion and the international exhibitions being held in Paris increased the fascination of me.hmicals. At the top of the siairs, the visitor is Breeted by the br€athtakingly beautiful doll made by Rochard. Her n€cklace is made up of tiny magnifying prisms overlayirg photoSraphs of Paris. with the proper light, one can view the lifelike scenes. Dolls shown in an amazing variety of vignettes share the exhibition spae with a very large display of Neapolitan crache figures. Many other religious pieces illustrate the history of France. 'Kaiser Baby' or just 'Baby'. Releas€d in 1909, the doll repr€sented a six-week old baby ad had a closed-dome head wilh brushstrokes for haia protruding ears, a crooked open-clos€d moutlr and intaglio eyes. The d6itn of the head must have created some problemr as the jointed bodies then in ue for dolly faced dolls were obviously not suitable (despite beinS used on the very first of these dolls) and an entirely new body n€eded to be created. The resuli was the fivepi@ baby body that is now so familiar to us. Even that appeare not to have been without its problems. 'Sunny lim' is an exffiple of nould 100 which is believed to have b€en among the very fi6t ihported into AusEalia, and may have b€en anonS the tust to be produced by the factory using a baby body. 'Sunny lim's' stringinS is exkaordinary. His head is anchored by elastic through a brass grommet in the bas€ of the torso between the legs, and his limbs are srflr8 arm,to-am and leg-to,leg. Later models of the same doll exhibit the five-
point stringing which is now so familiar to us. The factory .utinued widr the design of new.haracter dolls. Mould 101, in boy d girl ve6ions 'Pet€r' and 'Ma.ie' app€ared in 1909, but did nol appear to eI in Sreat quantities, a factor which today ontributes to its nrity and hence desirabitityl The next problem encountered by Kamner and Reinhardt appe6 to have involved lhe use of sleep'ng eyes with rhe character dollheads. Some rare later veEions of lm and 101 are found with glas eyes, but models as far as r14 are most frequently found with irtaSlio eyes. The delighttul I 17 comes only with a clos€d rnouth and glass eyes, while the 1r7n comes with glass flirting or'naughty' d an open mouth. A 21" tall doll from lhe 1l7nmould has a iointed body with the above,the-knee joints typical of the 1920's. She has fairly rosy cobnn& with oreSe-.ed cheek md an orange-.ed mouth that is open to show four teeth and a iongue. Her eyebrows are dark brown and [eather€d. Her ey€s, under both painted and applied lashes, are bright blue and flirt ftom side to side. She wears contemporary clothing of a pink and cream straw cloche hat and a pink silk dress with

'Ihis do€s not coftespond to her hei8ht in cenrimeters, and leads to the assumption that the head may have b€en intended for use wilh a fivepiece baby body. How€ver, the body, of the chubby toddler type with diagonal hip ioints, is mdoubtedly oriainal. The face is thatofa chubby child. Her eyebrcws are pale fawn st.oker and there

The 257 mould was produced in some quantity b€tween 1915 and 1932. It was made in a wide range o{ sizes, some almost as big as a two yea. old chil4 and wirh both sleeping and flirting eyes. A toddler boy of this mould is 25" tall, and has his orisinal red-brown mohair wi& which matches his red-brown feathered eyebrows. His blue sleeping eyes are su[ounded by both painted and applied tashes. His mourh is wide open to reveal two small upper teeth and a wobble tongue, and his lips are generour edged with darke..olor in the Kestner mamer. His fae is that of a happy chil4with dimples and rosy color to the cheelG- He is on 6ve-pie.e baby body. From ihe 1920's.omes a 20" doll marked 'lDK 250'. The doll wears his onginal €otton so€k and brown leather shoes, as well as a reproduced 'Little Lord Iauntleroy' suit in red velvet. On a five-piece toddler body is a 15" doll ma.ked 'K & Co' (fo. Kestner and Company, a late mark of rhe firm) plus '262' oeer'u'This last mark does not slrespond to her size in centimeters, $ she may have been intended for use on a baby body. She is a very sweet doll, wi& brcwn feathered eyebrows over broM glass sleeping eyes having both painted and applied tashes. The ormgered mouth is open to show two upper teth and a paper tongue. At the end of the 19th century, the M.Loughlin company, an American firm that sp€.ialized in manufacturing printed producB such as children's toyr books, s.roled Panoramat md paper dollr b€gan to make dolhouses. The dollhoules were made from paper board covered with lithographed p.inted paP€r' The fine architectural rendering of the exteiior and ihe sumptuous delails that represented interior tumishinSs, wallt floor coveringr and curtairo, in luded a myriad of textures and ton6. No doubt they were very desirable toys b€.aus€ of their enormous visual appeal. lts two rooms, one above the other, are spacious for such a
diminutive dollhouse. Each colortuly rendered r@m is depicted in detail. The first noo. rcom is lavish in its representation of a formal drawin8 room. CoverinS the floor is a very opulent carp€t in which an imposin8 medallion is €entered in a pattemed 8en background. The outer border o( the carpet complements the whole. Centered against the far wau is an elaborately fashioned marble fireplace. On its mante, a.e *veral deorative acces$nes. One is a beautitul manlel.lock. On either side of the fireplace are flmr to c€iling windows. Tasseled mauve lambrequins han8 over white curtains. They enrich the overall appearance of this part of the room. Coverins the side wall are beautiful panels on which are hun8 goldjramed paintings. The appearance of the second floor is much more restrained. The dainty while drtains on the windows and striped wall paper are plain by comparison to the elaborate decor of the first floor, yet all is suitably fashionable. Ea.h has a bisque shoulder head with painted and molded hair and painted eyes. The lower arns are bisque, as are the lower legs. Painted shoes are molded on the feet. Stuffed cloih is ued for the toreo and upper arms and legs. The other adults in.lude a cherished old-maid aunt and the other is a bachelor uncle. The only non
relative is a s-inch-high maid, wearin8 her original white apron and neai uniform. Thes€ endearing dollsbring a lively quality to the bustling household, but it is the third generation, the children, who complete this idylli. picture. The oldest child, attiactive blond all bisque girl, is also the tallest of the youngsters. She is 3 5/8 inch high, with a stiff neck, fixed glass eyes, and a mohair wig. Her arms and leSs (with molded one stfap, heeled black slippers) are jointed at the shoulder and hips. Two little girls and a baby boy are also Present. The two girls are ?1/4 in.hes high, but are made differently. Both have bisque heads. but the one with the molded bla.k band in he.molded blond hair has painted eyes. reputation for quality dolls. Bom in Waltershausen in 1858, Heinnch Handwerk was the son of a mailman. As was common for many families in the Wahershausen area during &at p€riod his family also labored as out workes making doll parts athome. At a8e 16 Heitrich was apprentied to a hetal working factory to leam to be a nechanical engine€r. A short time later he chang€d direchon and began training as a bank clerk at lhe Industrial Bank. TakinS this traininS and his mulhlingual talents with him he eventually went to work for a large sausage company as a ostomer relahons liaisn- At a8e 19 he was drafted into military Erice. In 1878 he was out of the Ervice and took a iob with the A. Wislizenus doll companyDrawing on his past skills he was soon made a traveling sal6 repres€ntative, a position which enabled him to make many new coniacts witlin lhe doll and toy industry. In l8&1 he maried Mi'u Knoch and the following year he left his job to open his own company- The 6rst product manuradured by Handwe.k was a novelty toy .alled a "devil in a box". This spring loaded toy would jump out of its match box when the box was opened, much as lhe can of snakes ioke item we are all familiar with today. The success of this item allowed Handwerk to venture into making luxury mohair doll wigs for the French trade. Minna Handwerk caretully oversaw the distribution of supplies and monitored the qualiry of the finished p.odu.rs. The Heimich Handwe.k Comp y paid then workere much better waSes lh the other toy companies in the area and soon established both a loyal work force and a reputation for quality work. within one year Handwerkwas able to move his family and business into a larger houp. By 1885 the Handwerks once aSain moved to a larger house, s€llin8 their previous buildin8 to a new doll company that was iust getting Soin& a company called Kammer & Reinhardt. By now the Handwerk wer€ making dolls with composition bal iointed bodies in addition to thei other lines. Ai about this time $e compmy be8an an asso.iation with the Ameri.an distributor, Hinrichs & Co. This association would lead to turther improvements in the dolls made by Hmdwerk as suggestions were .e.eived frcm their America distributor. Thee improvements included the use of a better grade of€lothingon the dolls and a chanSe to Frcn.h languaSe labels on the Handwerk doll boxes to appeal to a more ups.ale customer. In 1893 Handwerk exhibited dolls at the ChicaEo Columbian world Exposition where he won awards. The bisque heads (or the Handwerk dolls were made by lhe fim of Simon & Halbig of G.afenhain, ThurinSia. Handwqk ed Halbig were p€rsonal friends as well as business associates. In 1900 it eas Halbia ihat first sugaested to Handwerk ihat he find a way to make doll bodies by machine rather than by hand. Handwerk, drawing on his experience in the mechani.al enginering field, desiSned a process for heat pressing doll body Parts h stel molds. The company was now able to produce more dolls Gan ever and to sell them at very comp€ntive pric€i. Handwerk s success s€emed assured. By 1m1 the company could barely ke€p up with iis orders. However, lhis success was to b€ shon lived for Handwerk. In l90l Heirich decided to take out a life insurance policy and during the required physical examination it was discovered that he had a teminal diseae. Heinri.h Handwerk died on May 7, 1902 at the age of44.

This acquisition was important to Kammer & Reinhardt as itnow gave that firm a much needed connection with the porcelain factory of Simon & Halbig. Kammer and Reinlurdt continued to make dolls under the Heinrich Handweik name until1918. Du.ing his lifetime Handwerk took out numerous doll related patenis for joirted doll bodies ano different doll fae.. ln l8cq he regi.tered the irademark Bebe Cosmopolite. In 1898 he registered the trademark H Handwerk and Bebe de Reclame. Commonly found mold numbers used on Handwerk dolls include 6t 79, 8t 99, 109, and 119. Other mold numbers were also used and many dolls weie simply in.ised Heinri.h Handwerk // Simon Halbig. The voSue Doll Company originated when Mrs.lennie Adler Cra\ e' \tarted $ll,nS rmported dnd Ampri, anmade dolls in clothing she designed and sewed frorn her home in Somerville, Massachusetts. In 1922lennie Graves started impo.ting C,€rman bisque head dolls such as the K star R dolls, the Armand Marseille 10 inch "Just Me" character doll, and the 8 inch "Peggy J€an " the little sistet to "Just Me." Mrs. Graves dressed thes€ dolls in adorable outfits that reflected the Iatest fashions of the tihes. The dresses havebeautitul detailed embroidery and some have smo.kirg. A1l had @te mat.hing hats. Vogae used dolls with at least six different markings for Toddles. It is unclear whethei there is an exact chronology to the markings. It is known that the Aranbee (R & B)dolls were first. Howevet Vogue semed to have used unmarked doll parts i^terchangeably with Vogue marked parts.It is known that in 1943 there are dolls with at least th.ee different markinSs for ihe same Military Group series. All dolls had adorable clothin8 made fron high qualib/ fabrics. Practically all of them had hats, some had bows in their hair keepinS with Mrs. Graves life long love of hats. An adorable eries of dolls were the Sunshine Babies ftom the laie 1930s to mid 1940s. The* dolls had the Toddles head, body and arms, but had orved baby le8s. The dolls had molded painted hair and were marked "Vo8!e" on their head and "Doll Co." on their back. One of the lovely series of dolls offered were rhe Make-Up Dolls available in the r940s. This senes in€luded 13" Mary Iane,16" Betty Jane, 19 -1l2" lennie, and 20" Mary Ain. Thes€ dolls were all comPosition jointed dolls with either closed or open mouth with ieeth, sleep eyes and
md mohair wigs. Most ofthe heads are unmarked. The backs of the dolls a.e marked either "13" (on 13" doll) or "USA/ 16" (on 16" dou). The out6t labels are tagged: "VOGUE DOLLS,INC./ Medford, Mass" and have hooks or ties as closures. The dolls came in a plain cardboard box with ablue VoBue label "Vogue Dolls: IASHION LEADERS IN DOLL SOCIETY." Dalateqis a lovely 11" slim composition doll with a rather sad look, she is especially hard to find and popular with.ollectors. The "Make-up" dolls came with a little bag of cosmetics tied around their wrist thatincluded a miroa a powder puffand a cardboard container of powder. The "Make-up" dolls all came with hats and adorable out{its with the Vogue tag. M)rv line wa\ a lll" .omDos'tion doll rhat came in at least rwo versions, an open mouth and closed mourh. The open mouth doll had four teeth, a curly mohair braided wi& and painted dark lower lashes. Her body is marked "13." There was al$ a.losed-mouth ve.sion the sane size. Apparently rhe size was the most important attribute to determine the doll's name. Ee$ahae was a 16" tully jointed composition doll with blue sleep eyer mohair wig and an open nouth with teeth. She is marked on her back "USA /16" and was probably manufa€tuted in 1943. The unmarked 19-1/2" Iglaie was composition wth either clo*d or open mouth with four teth and step eyes. She had dark eye shadow above her eyes. She was manufactured in the early to mid 1940s and appea$ on the 1943 VoSue pnce list. These lovety dolts reflect the wondertul design talent of Mrs. Graves who with a small band of home-seweG dressed thee wondertul dolls and equipped them with their little make-up baSs so they could go forth and delight children of all generations. lashes,

The Military uniforms were available on two types of dolls, one with open mouth and one with closed mouth, Probably bought from different manufacturers to keep up with the demand. Graves als developed a baby doll with a magic skin body called Velva and also sold stuff€d animals Her business was growinS d she moved into a factory in 1946 in Medford, Mass. Her band of home-seweis als grew and provided emPloyment for nany wonen. In 1948 she stdted dressing hard plastic dolls in luding an 8" doll she commissioned from sculPtor Bernard LiPfert. This 8" doll would officially be given the name "Ginny" in 1953. Ginny would heIP the Vogue DoI aompany become a multi-million dollar business in the 1950r elling the most dolls in the United States in 1957. These early Vo8ue dressed dolls, Cimy's ancestors, are a lastinS.eminder of the vision and creativity of Mrs. Iemie Adler Graves.
