These days all you hear about is screen size but size does matter when it comes to PC screens and television screens. Big screens are nice and they are even better when they are curved. The Samsung LC27F591F is one of those curved PC screens. In a sea of PC monitors, can this one stand out and shine or does it disappear into the abyss?

The screen comes in a large box packed with polystyrene foam for protection. The screen stand still needs to be attached to the screen and this can be done most easily with a screwdriver or even with your finger nails as the screws are fairly big. A HDMI and Digital Input cable are provided in the box but the Digital input cable is very short. I couldn’t reach the back of my computer that was standing directly below the screen on my desk. The power adapter is a bit larger compared to other screens but has less weight to it. All cables can be nicely tucked away behind the screen stand as there is a cable hook provided. The power cable and HDMI cable fit tightly in the cable hook. Connectivity wise we get the standard options: 1 HDMI input, 1 Digital Port, 1 D-sub port, 1 audio output and 1 audio input. The Samsung 591F also has 2 built in 5W speakers that produce ok sound. Nothing compared to a 7.1 surround sound system but still it has good audio quality and even some bass to it. I always like to have some built-in speakers to watch YouTube video’s or other media consumption and these speakers provide good overall sound quality and loudness to do just that.

Noticeably about the Samsung 591F is its white color and very slim bezels. Most screens are black or gray but this one has a beautiful glossy white finish that is almost apple-ish. Not everyone will like this but if you have a clean desk setup and white walls, then it fits in nicely. I really like this white look but I can imagine that not everyone feels the same way about a white gaming monitor. Also the very small bezels are fantastic to look at. On the back of the right bottom corner we find a little joystick. This allows you to go through all the options of the screen more easily and more brands should adapt this method (LG is one of those brands that does). Most of the standard options are there, like you would expect it to be: brightness, gamma, colors, saturation, sharpness, etc.
The screen can be tilted forwards/backwards but it cannot be adjusted in height. I do have to say that the static height of the screen is good but an inch (2.54 cm) higher would have been nice (for me at least).

For me, coming from my 24” IPS monitor, this one looks over-saturated at first but I got used to it pretty fast. After a while, the colors look good but the orange and yellow seem a bit too bright compared to other colors. This is due to the oversaturation of green and red but overall the colors are very good for the “out-of-the-box” presets. Also sRGB wise, the Samsung 591F is pretty accurate. While gaming I experienced no blur or stuttering which is expected of a gaming monitor with a 1 ms response time. AMD freesync technology is present in this screen but since I lack the hardware to test it I have no conclusion on this matter.

Most 27” monitors these days provide a higher resolution than 1920×1080 but this will also increase the load on the GPU. For lower spec computers this might be a good solution but it also has a downside. A larger screen with the same resolution as a 24” screen means that the pixels are bigger (more visible). This is noticeable here when you really look for it but otherwise this is not a deal breaker for me.
Now let’s talk about curves (screen curves of course). Compared to other screens I have seen, the Samsung 591F has a mediocre screen curve. It is enough to give you the immersive feeling while gaming but not so much to give you the feeling of looking at a fish bowl. The curve is also believed to reduce eye-strain while working or gaming for multiple hours a day.

Conclusion

A very nice design with small bezels and a beautiful white color. Samsung gets a 10/10 for this design. Out-of-the-box the 591F delivers good color accuracy with lots of different connection options and built-in speakers so overall you get a lot of great features for a very reasonable price. I can imagine that not everyone thinks that this is a gaming monitor but with that 1 ms response time and AMD freesync it surely has the means to be called a gaming monitor. A white wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Many thanks to Samsung for providing me with this review sample.
