Since next Sunday, October 1st happens to be National Day over in the People's Republic of China, let's head east once more and try to wrap our heads around those unique metric flight levels they use there. Our destination is an interesting bit of aviation history with a legacy stretching back over a century: Beijing Nanyuan Airport (ZBNY) was the first airport in China, and closed down only as recently as 2019, at the same time as the featured Star Atlas freeware custom scenery was released to celebrate the airport's long heritage. I've also linked scenery for Beijing's two other major airports Daxing (ZBAD) and Beijing Capital (ZBAA), and there even seems to be a private airfield called Bei'An River (ZBBA) nearby, although I can't find much information about it in English... and I'm not exactly fluent in Chinese!

Next Sunday I skip, I camp over a long weekend in the mountains. But could not resist submitting. Unfortunately, however, only ZBAA is available in FSE. There I landed, although I could also have landed in ZBNY, FSE just takes the nearest airport.

Great location and awesome sceneries chosen by @Kumiankka!

I started out of Seoul Incheon, RKSI, the recent location for a fly-in aboard the Embraer Phenom 300, E55P. Tweaked the clock so that it wasn't pitch dark on that side of the world.

The lights while taxing to RWY 33 looked beautiful on the latest update of X-Plane 12.

Took off RWY 33 at Incheon.

It was a 90-minute flight over the Yellow Sea and I followed the approach DUM11A for Beijing, which flew right by ZBAD.

Given that ZBNY, the fly-in destination has been deactivated, I flew a visual approach into RWY 36.

Took a group photo around this time.

I decided to go airport hopping, taking off ZBNY RWY 18 inbound for ZBAD RWY 19R (which was a straight flight).

On my short flight to ZBAD, flew past @F5Chaser and @MerlinEng, both inbound for ZBNY RWY 36.

Hi fellow pilots,

I tried hard to find a suitable flight in FS-Economy since there are only a small number of airports covered at all for China, and there were nearly no suitable aircraft available for short routes (I need at least a comparable model).

So this time I did something new and did not rent an aircraft, buy the fuel myself and assign passenger offers, but I took an offer to hire me as a pilot for a flight. In this case the payment for services of pilot is fixed, there are no extra expenses for aircraft and fuel and the aircraft is also already assigned. This btw. seems also the only method to fly the big iron. In my case there was an offer to fly cargo from Tokyo Haneda to Beijing Capital airport.

All flights for pilot ostkamp
Date From To Aircraft Type Duration Distance Earnings
2023/10/01 14:20:25 RJTT ZBAA N-6575O Boeing 727-100/200 04:53 1131 $8,590.50

Since I haven't got a B727-200 in the hanger, I used the Flightfactor B757-200 as a replacement.

The impact on framerate of this special model seemed too high to me with XP12, so I used it in XP11 this time.

Taking off from RJTT after spending an hour or so with desperate attempts to get the IRS aligned and the FMC programmed. The FMC data is so much outdated, that a real planning was not possible anymore, I just took in a few VORs that are not going to change so often, and finally a direct ILS approach for runway 19 at Beijing.

yimage00001.jpg

The flight took a very long time (nearly 5 hours real time, and due to the complex flight model / scenery I could not really speed up with time warp except over the sea).
Here passing over Seoul Incheon airport.
yimage00002.jpg

I had loaded about 8500 kg of simulated cargo for FedEx. Yes, the model is not really a cargo one.
yimage00003.jpg

On approach to Beijing Capital runway 19.
yimage00004.jpg

Got setup ok and turned on all 3 autopilots for autoland which worked out really well.
yimage00005.jpg

Got an acceptable landing.
yimage00006.jpg

After I got parked @Quintao landed. I was already so late that only a small number of participants was left.
yimage00007.jpg

yimage00008.jpg

Since I was flying XP11, I loaded one of my previous favorites the Aerobask Eclipse 550 NG which is unfortunately not available for XP12.
yimage00009.jpg

Leaving Beijing Capital for Beijing Nanuan airport.
yimage00010.jpg

On final.
yimage00011.jpg

Landing was ok, but the aircraft drifted off to the right after touchdown.
yimage00012.jpg

Got parked next to @Kumiankka who just went off for a break.
yimage00013.jpg

Soon I prepared for next flight to Beijing Daxing International nearby.
yimage00014.jpg

yimage00015.jpg

On final to Daxing.
yimage00016.jpg

yimage00017.jpg

yimage00018.jpg

That airport was again a very large one.
yimage00019.jpg

I got briefly parked next to the tower.
yimage00020.jpg

Meanwhile @Kumiankka had returned and prepared a Cessna single prop for a flight to the last airport Beijing Haidan. I hurried and switched aircraft to Aerobask Pipistrel Panthera (again only available in XP11 for now).
yimage00021.jpg

With full power I was able to speed up and meet with @Kumiankka, @Vega66 also joined later.
yimage00022.jpg

The airport was hard to find in the woods and had only a very short runway.
yimage00023.jpg

Surrounded by trees from all sides.
yimage00024.jpg

I landed with minimum speed and full flaps extended at about 65 kias.
yimage00025.jpg

Was able to stabilize the aircraft after touchdown then applied maximum braking.
yimage00026.jpg

yimage00027.jpg

Got to stop near the end of the runway, hard landing but no injuries. 😀
yimage00028.jpg

Got parked next to @Kumiankka.
yimage00029.jpg

yimage00030.jpg

Next @Vega66 landed as well in another kind of Cessna, IIRC. He got it stopped already at half of the runway. 👍
yimage00031.jpg

Final group shot.
yimage00032.jpg

Final overview, here one can see how shocking short the runway is. 😬
yimage00033.jpg

There I called it a day. See you next time! 🙂

Greeting pilots.

Started from Xilinhot China (ZBXH)  in the Air China B738:

1zbxh.thumb.jpg.8114e9345b4d4d56fa54ba0bd70feddb.jpg

On my first attempt into Beijing Nanyuan Airport I crashed due to a sudden stall. I drop my air speed to 170 knots and forgot to add flaps. My second attempt was better. Below on long final to rwy 36 Beijing Nanyuan:

A lot of flying for one evening once again...

a319_StdDef - 2023-10-01 13.54.53.jpg

Started from Shanghai Pudong in the ToLiss A319, just behind @ghun1. The livery is that of the PLAAF's 34th Transport Aviation Division, whose VIP transports were often based at Nanyuan before its closure.

a319_StdDef - 2023-10-01 13.59.41.jpg

Departing Shanghai and climbing to flight level 11000m (36100ft)

a319_StdDef - 2023-10-01 15.19.55.jpg

Arriving in Beijing after just enough time for the usual in-flight coffee break, and passing Daxing Airport on the way in

a319_StdDef - 2023-10-01 15.25.28.jpg

Like others already mentioned, charts weren't exactly easy to come by for this already closed down location, so I went for a visual circuit instead of trying to set up an ILS approach. The timing worked out great, I got to watch @ghun1 land just as I was turning downwind here.

a319_StdDef - 2023-10-01 15.32.30.jpg

Once it was my turn to land at Nanyuan, @Vega66 showed up to take a closer look in a helo

a319_StdDef - 2023-10-01 15.40.43.jpg

Parked alongside some other transports in similar livery. The attention to detail in the scenery is amazing, I believe those are all other actual planes operated by the 34th right down to the correct tail numbers!

MiG-21M - 2023-10-01 16.03.06.jpg

MiG-21M - 2023-10-01 16.08.44.jpg

Since the Airbus's sidestick setup was similar to a fighter jet's, requiring very little control reconfiguration, I decided to switch to the fighter jets at this point, starting with the MiG-21.

MiG-21M - 2023-10-01 16.11.51.jpg

MiG-21M - 2023-10-01 16.15.50.jpg

Met up with @CHASMAN2014 on his way in and formed up alongside to watch his landing

MiG-21M - 2023-10-01 16.20.43.jpg

Next I headed for a nearby airbase of Xijiao.

MiG-21M - 2023-10-01 16.24.02.jpg

That landing may have been a bit too close for comfort... got to watch the glideslope next time!

J-10 WS-10A - 2023-10-01 16.33.41.jpg

Next up was the Chengdu J-10. Interesting design but the X-Plane model is aerodynamically a bit questionable, barely making it off the ground here despite a long runway.

J-10 WS-10A - 2023-10-01 16.43.39.jpg

J-10 WS-10A - 2023-10-01 16.45.02.jpg

Dropped some fireworks over Nanyuan Airport

J-10 WS-10A - 2023-10-01 16.51.09.jpg

Trying to land the J-10 was the biggest challenge of the evening for me. Even with full flaps the stall speed was around 230 knots, in fact I doubt there was even any difference to the clean configuration!

J-10 WS-10A - 2023-10-01 16.51.31.jpg

Slammed the J-10 down on the numbers...

J-10 WS-10A - 2023-10-01 16.51.50.jpg

...and then applied full braking using every trick in the book: wheel brakes, speedbrakes, full downward elevator and of course the brake chute. Even with this combination I was barely able to stop before the end of the runway.

ilyushin_il-76 - 2023-10-01 17.16.47.jpg

Next, I took off in the Beriev A-50 radar plane for a quick return flight to Nanyuan. Something interesting was going on with the scenery at Xijiao, if you look closely you can see airport service vehicles driving offroad.

ilyushin_il-76 - 2023-10-01 17.23.01.jpg

ilyushin_il-76 - 2023-10-01 17.25.58.jpg

Since @ostkamp and @Quintao had landed at Beijing Capital I first headed there for a quick flyby.

ilyushin_il-76 - 2023-10-01 17.34.29.jpg

Returning to Nanyuan

ilyushin_il-76 - 2023-10-01 17.46.08.jpghis E

@ostkamp came back to ZBNY as well, his Eclipse rendered here as an An-28

Cessna_172SP - 2023-10-01 18.12.42.jpg

Cessna_172SP - 2023-10-01 18.14.22.jpg

Switched to the XP11 default C172 for an expedition to the small airfield of Beijing Haidian.

Cessna_172SP - 2023-10-01 18.23.47.jpg

Finding the small airfield near the mountains was a bit tricky, since it wasn't listed on most maps or charts, and wasn't being shown by the GPS unit either. @ostkamp had decided to tag along and passed me on the way, and @Vega66 was inbound as well.

Cessna_172SP - 2023-10-01 18.31.53.jpg

Eventually we found the tiny field hidden between the mountains. Circling to land here, so as not to lose sight of the field again.

Cessna_172SP - 2023-10-01 18.32.54.jpg

No matter which direction you picked, there were trees in the way to mess with your approach. And the runway was pretty short too, even for a Cessna. As a result, both me and @ostkamp used up basically all the runway. On the other hand @Vega66 pulled off an amazing landing in his C337, stopping around the halfway point.

Cessna_172SP - 2023-10-01 18.38.39.jpg

Lined up outside the hangar next to Vega and ostkamp

awxdc3 - 2023-10-01 18.51.41.jpg

@ostkamp had to go, but @Vega66 and I still had time for a return flight. We both switched to DC-3s but Vega got hit by the same nose-over glitch as last week.

awxdc3 - 2023-10-01 18.56.16.jpg

Further control issues sent Vega into the woods on his first takeoff attempt.

awxdc3 - 2023-10-01 18.58.48.jpg

My own takeoff was a bit precarious too... those treetops were awfully close!

awxdc3 - 2023-10-01 19.01.59.jpg

Swung by for another look hoping to join up with Vega as he took off... but instead got to watch Vega slide off the runway a second time. Luckily third time was the charm for Vega, and we were able to head back for Nanyuan after all.

awxdc3 - 2023-10-01 19.08.05.jpg

A low flyby of Xijiao on the way back

Some generic highrises in Beijing

awxdc3 - 2023-10-01 19.17.42.jpg

Landing on rwy 36 again

awxdc3 - 2023-10-01 19.19.54.jpg

The grass at the airport was quite overgrown, you can't even see the taxiway I'm on from this angle! @Vega66 had caught up on the way and landed only moments after me.

awxdc3 - 2023-10-01 19.26.47.jpg

Parked outside the main terminal building, saying farewell to Vega who had to call it a night here.

Rotate-MD-80-XP11 - 2023-10-01 20.08.29.jpg

I still had time for one more short hop to Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport, although starting up the systems of the Rotate MD-80 took a little longer than I had planned.

Rotate-MD-80-XP11 - 2023-10-01 20.17.32.jpg

Eventually I got everything sorted out and was ready to taxi.

Just now, rajo said:

So for me the Aerobask Eclipse 550 runs in XP12, see screenshot

@rajo I wonder how you got that far in XP12, since the official statement from Aerobask ( @harranssor and @Lionel) is that it does not work and will never work on XP12. AFAIK the reason is that it uses SASL v2 which is incompatible to XP12 and compatibility updates for SASL v2 are not expected anymore.

Given that statement I did not try to install it on XP12 myself since that would reduce my activation counter.

See below and the other thread linked in that.

Did you just load the aircraft or also perform some flight successfully?

My Fly In started saturday, performing an Intercontinental Flight from Anchorage to Beijing Capital, with the A350 from Flight Factor dressed on a retro China Airlines livery.

Passing Kumi on a nice 747.

The aircraft performs very well, working flawlessly in XP12.

Inverted fly over Daxing

And a regular pass.

A few more stunts around the city.

@ostkamp and Kumi had left YanNuyan in a couple of SkyHawks, to visit Haidian, so I expedited the landing at Daxing and changed to a Skymaster in order to join them.

Circled around a couple of times, allowing for them to land and studying the tight approach. That eventually was rewarded with the best landing of the day. Next, parked for a group photo.

Kumi was planning to try a DC3 departure on this tiny strip and I also joined him, on a Chinese Air Force Skytrain.

The first attempt didn't go well, as I failed to catch enough speed and crashed on the woods after an unrecoverable stall. Kumi managed to lift of at the first attempt.

Tried another configuration for the second attempt accelerating the engines before releasing the brakes. That was not a good idea, as the DC3 ditched the nose even before starting the roll. Finally, at the third attempt managed to take off just over the stall limit, taking speed and enough altitude to reach for NanYuan.

Parked next to Kumi for the final take, just before call it a day.

Another Fly In with lots of fun. Thank you all.

Did you just load the aircraft or also perform some flight successfully?

flies good. There are some glitches, red alert with engine overload, but doesn't disturb

@rajo Your Download Page screenshot is about the Phenom 300, but not the Eclipse 550 NG I was talking of.

And yes, I enjoy the Phenom in XP12 as well, just wish there would be a way for the Eclipse and Pipistrel Panthera as well.

Hours later: just completed a flight with the Aerobask EA50

Engine performance is consistently too weak

after I was too long in the red zone, the right engine burned

after error reset I could start the engine again and land at the destination

Hello all!

b738-2023-10-0108_26_55AM.png.thumb.JPEG.bcc93e3d4e8d7caac68b11e4848c2ce1.JPEGb738-2023-10-0108_46_39AM.png.thumb.JPEG.c513ef3f0921c283103295c9dd60e547.JPEG

I started my flight at Penglai airport (ZYST) west of the city of Yantai. I decided to stick with the B737 for this week.

The flight was relatively smooth and weather was great the whole way. These new cirrus cloud formations in 12.07 look really nice. I set my course for Daxing to join the improvised visual approach for runway 36. Good thing the weather was clear this week or Daxing might have ended up the alternate destination for me.

I forgot my microphone was muted during most of the descent and approach so my arrival may have been a little bit of a surprise unless you were watching the map. @Quintao departed Nanyuan and met me in the middle on his way to Daxing. The landing this time was good, although could have been earlier on the runway.

I taxied up to where @CHASMAN2014 parked, followed closely by @MerlinEng who landed a few minutes later.

Thank for the flight everyone! See you in Canada!
