Every month, we have more and more drivers getting the gi voucher, which is great. It’s only £20, but it’s a nice touch to show how grateful we are for their hard work. “There’s been a lot of work put into introducing new policies and procedures, but we’ve also done things like introducing a new sta uniform. However, I’d say the most visible development since I’ve joined was when we purchased 13 Optare Tempo SRs from Trent Barton. Instead of putting them onto a route in standard livery as we had done previously, we identi ed two high-frequency corridors which we route-branded the buses for. It’s the rst proper route branding we’ve done in a long, long time – there was some route branding used a decade or so ago but not on the scale we’re doing it now. “We have two colour-coded routes at the minute, but they’ve sort of been a victim of their own success. The six Tempos we have on service 13, the Pink Line, are due to be replaced in the next couple of months by six second-hand Mercedes-Benz Citaros from Trent Barton. They’ve recently ordered another 55 ADL Enviro200 MMCs, some of which will be replacing the Citaros currently used on the Leicester to Derby Skylink service. We were able to work out a deal with ADL to buy six of the Citaros which Trent Barton had part-exchanged against the Enviro200 MMCs. This will allow six of the Optares to move to service 8 Ipswich – Whitehouse, which currently has a PVR of six Enviro200s, in turn displacing six DAF DB250LF double-deckers. “We already had contactless payments, but one thing we did last year was to proactively push it on the buses. We’ve got vinyls now on the vehicles telling people that it’s the easiest way to pay. In October we launched our own mobile phone app, which is something the company had been looking at doing for several years. However, there was never an agreement reached with the so ware companies we were talking to. “We started discussions again with a number of providers more recently but weren’t getting anywhere. Some operators – like Arriva – have two apps, one for purchasing m-tickets and another for real time information. It was important to us that there was just one app that did everything, as it’s so much easier to use. “One good thing about UrbanThings’ apps is that they’re developed using native technology. This means that, rather than having one app which is uploaded both to Apple’s App Store and Google Play (which can cause problems on some devices), behind the scenes there are actually two separate apps. One is designed speci cally for Android and the other speci cally for Apple iOS. “We also started doing rail replacement work last summer which is now an important supplementary revenue stream. I approached Abellio; they’d had a bit of a bad history with Ipswich Buses, but I explained that I was a new manager and asked if we could start afresh. They gave us a chance, and we’re now probably their rst-choice supplier in the area. Because our eet is fully DDA-compliant, that gave us a head start too.” Fleet standardisation One of the operator’s current focuses is to standardise its eet a little more, as Stephen explained: “We currently operate 71 vehicles, 43 of which are single-deckers and 28 of which are double-deckers. With the exception of six DAFs, all of our double-deckers are Scania-based. 28 of the single-deckers are Euro V, nine are Euro IV, three are Euro VI and three are Euro III. As I say though, when the six Citaros arrive that’ll increase the Euro VI total to nine, and six DAFs will probably be withdrawn. Our whole double-decker eet will then be Scania as well. “We’re trying to standardise the eet a bit more now, as in the past it was quite varied. Also, the ride quality… there are no rattles and you feel comfortable, you’re not thrown about.” Ipswich Buses has tested a number of alternative-fuelled vehicles in the past but, as Stephen told me, will be sticking with diesel for now: “Last year, we trialled the electric Enviro200 I mentioned earlier and a hybrid Citaro,” he said. “At the minute, we have concerns over how fast battery and motor technology is moving.
