ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOV. 3, 1997.

ene,

This is written on Octoher 27th. At this date practically all
of the farmers in South Georgia have finished gathering, and
most of the farmers in N orth Georgia are almost through gath-
ering. There have been a great many orders ia bacteria
which comes through the Department of Agriculture. This is
a very hopeful sign, as yetch is-the greatest soil producer that

I have had opportunity to observe at our experimental sta-
tions. I would like for our different County Agents over the
state to discuss this matter with the farmers. There is a great
deal of grain now being planted in Georgia, especially in

of his feed supply for next year and put in small grain now
wherever he will need it.

When the gathering is over and the small grain put in, it is

good bottom land grow up in briers and undergrowth. Dont
let your fertile hillsides wash away.

diy EX suggestion wa smade to me this week by Mr. Powell, of
Indian Springs, Georgia, I will state it to you for what it is

_ FROM THE COMMISSIONER

Northeast Georgia. It is a good time for the farmer to think

a good time for us to think about terracing and ditching. The
importance of this cannot be exaggerated. Dont let your

People that own land along the highways can control the posting
of advertisements on their trees and frrces. The promiscuous ap- _

_ pearance of these advertisements detras from the looks of the road
and the section where they are placed. he man that owns the land

can get some revenue for the privilege f posting these advertise-_
ments, if they will not consent for them ') be put up free.

Mr. Powell, also suggested that thei e were a great many di-
lapidated fences and vacant houses scattered throughout

Georgia that farmers were allowing to stand on their land and

gradually decay. These are unsightlp and there may be some

good lumber that could be reclaimed oy tearing these things
away and saving the lumber. It wo] also help the looks of |
your property. |

We are making progress in an ag*:.ultural way in Georgia.
This year has seen good returns for * atermelons, cantaloupes,

tobacco, peaches, apples and cotton, There are a good many

hogs now being marketed in Georgia through the Bureau of
Markets. The price is not what it should be, although from
ths source the state is receiving quite a revenue.

In the meantime, the great thing for tur farmers, is to take on
new life, repair your terraces, elean }-1t your ditches and im-
prove your soil, make the home mors attractive, and you will
eradually learn to enjoy staying ov te farm more,

DIVERSIFIED FARMING

Many varieties of vegetablu.
may be planted during October
with the assurance of a successful
yield. Other vegetables may be
planted during October with pos.
sibilities of a successful yiel and
it is a well known fact thai late
fresh vegetables will bring good
merket prices.

Seasonable plantings for las
October, according to the State
College of Agriculture, include
- LettuceThe ice-berg varie\s
is. very popular with housewives
and there is a steady demand for
the same the year round.

- RadishBest verieties, Scar vt
Globe, French, Breakfast, White

Teiele.

RapeBest variety, Dwarf Kk
sex. Keep cut back for greens,

RhubarbBest varieties, Victe
ria, Lunaeus, Mammoth Red. Bes
adapted to northern part of atate
Cover roots four inches. |

MustardBest varieties, (iat.
Southern Curled, Chinese.

Onion SetsBest varieties, Bw.
muda, Yellow Danver, Prize Ta
ker, Silver Skin. Many other va-
rieties may be planted with pror
pect of good financial returns.
_ provided weather condition are
favorable. e

Raspberries Profitable Crap
_ Growing raspberries and igs
will bring splendid. money re-
_ turns to women on the farm, who
live near large cities, and will
_ have a convenient market foi the
same. ,

A buyer for a large chain of :e-
_. tail grocery stores, with braneltes
in almost every city in Georgia,
_ recently told the writer that he
had never seen the supply: of rasp-

. : berries equal the demand.

: Dr. H. P. Stuckey, Director ol
_ the Georgia Experiment Station,
submits for the benefit of Bulle-
tin readers, the following valuable
_ information concerning raspberry
~ culture: Raspberries will thrive.
best in the northern half of the
_ state. The soil should be made

fertile and well prepared. A come]

bination of barnyard manurg and
commercial fertilizers will be

niant season from late fall to ear-
'y spring. They should have reg-
ular clean culture to keep down
weeds and maintain a vigorous
grow ng condition. :

PruningThe canes which pro-
duce the berries are cut down to
the ground as soon as the crop is
harvested.. This permits the
young canes to grow in readiness
to produce a crop the following
season.

VarietiesThe Georgia Experi-
ment Station is eross breeding and
testing more than a dozen varie-
ties of raspberries, along with a
collection of blackberries and
dewberries at present. The re-
sults thus far indicate that there
Sno one best variety of raspber-
ries. A variety that may be high
in quality may be low in yield, or
may be subject to disease, ete.
However, the following varieties
have shown more or less marks of
superiority in the collection and
interest to
growers:

Royal Purple.

Golden Queen.

St. Regis.

Kirskin. |

Van Fleet. |

There are no doubt, many varie-
t:es found here and there in com-
munities that, for the particular
section, are as good if not better
than any of these. It is therefore
a good practice to secure raspber-
ry plants from a neighbor who has
found a variety well adapted to
the loeality.
