hardware replacement for ADVC 110?

Hello,

Thanks for this informative thread, which seems to address MY issues as well.

I too have the ADVC Video converter, and cannot seem to get it to work with a late 2015 Mac. 9It worked so WELL with my 2007-era Mac) Have you found a hardware replacement that workers with new OS's?

I'd love to replace the ADVC110 with something newer, so I can return to analog video conversions with a 2015-era Mac.

I'd still need to have RCA-input jacks for my older CamCorders. I am digitizing 8mm video cassettes. Thanks for any assistance !

Hi, drobi, maybe i can help you.. the ADVC 110 and its cousin, the ADVC 300 are very versatile. However, they aren’t being made anymore… ☹️… that being said, they do rely on Firewire for output which isn’t available anymore ( hasn’t been since 2008-09 ‘ish) … that being said, Apple did make a FireWire to thunderbolt 3 adapter… which might be useful to you.. i know that iMovie is still around… and works fine on modern Macs.. so.. no real reason to give up your ADVC 110–unless you want to… blackmagic used to make an intensity shuttle which might have worked… it too isn’t available anymore.. there isn’t much out there… less ‘n’ ya wanna pay a bunch…

hope this helps you

Alas, I have now upgraded to a late 2015 iMac running Mac OS 12. and have lost the ability to use this great piece of converting hardware. Going to have to RETURN the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire cable as it DOES NOT FIT the Firewire that comes with the ADVC-110. After many years, the time has come to upgrade the hardware. ANYone have recommendations for what to purchase for pulling in analog videos off an 8mm video-camcorder that still works? Thanks for any assistance !

Thanks for explaining. I probably linked to the incorrect product. If you can FIND a product that will work with my ADVC-110 and work with the Firewire to Thunderbolt connector to a Mac, that can resolve this issue for me, can you please link it here? Because I really do not understand what specifically is needed for FW-800 - FW-400 conversion. THANK YOU for your replies.

IS THIS what you are suggesting for an analog camera tat plays back 8mm cassettes?

Also?

"And, given that you are using "Never the Same Color Twice" to get from the camera to the digitizer, the FW cable is the least of your worries. In fact, if the camera supports it, S-Video would be a big step up."

Camera is more than 20 years old and does NOT support "S" video. It uses analog red, yellow and white so called "RCA" plugs. They plug into the ADVC-110. Do you mean that I should try to find "RCA" red, yellow and whites - - to "S" video INPUT for the ADVC-110? Not sure that exists. Thanks again!

Hi John,

Thanks for a kind reply to me query! yes, I agree that the old model converter is/was a decent product.

i am aware of the FireWire to thunderbolt converter plug, so that is my next effort. I’m going to order one or pick up one at the Apple store near me.

it’s worth a try, given your advice, and other threads here on the support pages.

wish me luck! Many thanks,

You’re welcome, deb in boston… fwiw, i used the elgato vhs kit for transferring tapes( pretty much all vhs/vhs-c) and i used to have a Mac with Firewire( still do)… classic mac pro 5,1… for transferring 8mm and DV tapes.. iMovie is your friend on this one as it makes the transfer process a ‘no-brainer’, especially over FireWire.. transfers will take place in real time, eg a 1hr tape will take 1hr to transfer… get to know iMovie and i’m sure you can make some great transfers.. including making ‘em widescreen… and up to 1080 output( or 720 which should be ok too) i’d look at the blackmagic intensity shuttle /advc 300 only if your advc 110 pooped out on you and you wanted more …and assuming you could find either one on ebay
