Surface Book 3 & Go 2 price points leak in Europe?

Update 2020/04/13: Surface Go 2 likely includes Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6

Update 2020/04/14: More SB3/Go2 SKU info (RAM/SSD/CPU)

Update 2020/04/28: More FCC certifications

Some interesting info was briefly listed on several European electronics retailer websites indicating that Surface Book 3 and Surface Go 2 product announcements/pre-ordering may happen in the near future.

Of particular note is the so-called “Project T” with 5 configurations between €1617.80 – 2616.70 (without VAT) indicating it may be a Surface Book 3 13.5″ based on last-gen Book pricing. Similarly, “Project U” has 9 configurations between €2234.10 – 3441.70 indicating it may be a Surface Book 3 15″. “Project V” with 5 configurations between €407.60 – 847.20 may be a Surface Go 2.

We can also see three new accessories listed:

The 127W power supply is interesting in that it could indicate Microsoft is moving towards a 20 volt power delivery system (up from 15 volts in last-gen devices). The most recent Surface devices already include DC-DC converters on the motherboard accommodating USB-C power delivery @ 20v while the proprietary Surface Connector is limited to 15v. So it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to accommodate 20v on the Surface Connector as well.

So are these real devices or are multiple unrelated retailers in the EU coordinating to troll for clicks?

In the past, Microsoft has provided monthly spreadsheets and an API that retailers can use to automatically pull SKU and MSRP information, so it’s plausible this is real pricing info released prematurely with placeholder product details. Equally plausible is that this “leak” is part of a marketing stunt to raise awareness without paying for ads and this new product info was seeded with certain retailers intentionally.

Why would MS launch new devices in the midst of COVID-19?

We do know that Intel has already started discontinuing the Kaby-Lake family CPUs that are used in last-gen Surface devices, so it may be that inventory has simply run out of those older chips forcing MS to refresh. Apple, Asus, Acer, and Dell have announced product refreshes in recent weeks. And with retailers like Amazon straining to keep work-from-home workstation products in, its no surprise to see manufacturers working hard to fill the gap.

Hopefully these new devices are real and the form factors and connectors are similar to older models so existing accessories like ergonomic mounts and cases will still work.
