Title
Roman Colchester Brooch
Description
English: Late Iron Age copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester One-Piece Type and of 1st century AD date

The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring, the catch-plate and the wings (with a length of 42.7mm, a depth of 14.4mm and a weight of 2.5g). The spring was positioned behind the wings and only the stubs of the spring at the bow and the forward-projecting claw to tension the chord are now present. The stubs of the wings are evident either side of the head (with a surviving width of 6.2mm). The bow projects outwards from the head before turning sharply and is gently arched. The bow is of sub-rectangular section at the head (with a width of 3.4mm and a thickness of 2.5mm) and becomes oval sectioned, with straight sides gradually converging to the pointed foot. There is now no decoration discernible on the bow. The remains of the catch-plate are evident as a short flange on the rear of the leg. The brooch has a dark-brown surface with areas of pale green corrosion.
