DISP102 PCB DispIDC-20 TFT13. My camera doesn’t do the 1.3″ IPS display justice, the display is sharp and crisp to the eye.

This is a 1.3″ 240×240 IPS display, connected by ribbon cable, instead of the onboard 1.8″ 160×128 TFT display. This enables the DISP102 PCB to support many different SPI displays, and creates options for physical arrangement.

We are calling the off board display connection format DispIDC-20. Options include :

  • 1.8″ ST7735 TFT 160×128
  • 1.8″ ST7735 TFT 160×128 with touch panel
  • 1.3″ ST7789 IPS 240×240
  • 2.0″ ST7789 IPS 320×240
  • 2.4″ TFT 320×240

The Question – Why CC2640S1 BLE 4.2 instead of BLE 5

The Background

A few people are looking at me and asking the question – why are we still developing with BLE 4.2 instead of BLE 5 for our new small low power sensors. After all, we all want mesh, we all want longer range, we all want the latest tech …… or do we

The Answer (at the time of writing this post)

There are a number of factors to consider

  • Price – last we checked the CC2640S1 module costs under US$5 (100 off price) – yup, until we see a BLE 5 module at the same price point with ceramic antenna or ipx connector option, this point is hard to beat for a small low power sensor
  • Range – 50m outdoors is enough in most cases, lets talk about sub 1G for longer range and getting though obstructions. That better range for BLE5 comes at a cost, its a lower data rate, the TX time is longer, that’s more power being consumed. And then you still have the penetration issues at 2.4G
  • Power – Mesh doesn’t come free when it comes to power consumption, so its power wiring for Relay Nodes / Friend Nodes, hmmm, not very different to a gateway
  • Phones and Tablets – I can wander into BigW (aka local dept. store) today and get a fairly decent phone with bluetooth 4.2 with BLE supported, not locked to a carrier – for about two hundred bucks, if you can do that for BLE 5 please let me know (update, I dropped my old phone in the drink, $80 at Coles prepaid with BLE 4.2)
  • Raspberry Pi 3 B+ Ethernet WIFI BLE 4.2 (POE hat coming) – respectable gateway hardware at a reasonable price (there are even cellular hats)
  • ESP32 Ethernet BLE 4.2 WIFI – realistic boards from reputable suppliers available for gateway hardware – such as Pycom GPy
  • and other boards for gateways and sophisticated BLE 4.2 hardware such as mediaTek MT7697 …….

I’ll agree, the new BLE 5 hardware from Nordic and TI looks good, and there is no denying that longer advertising payload would enable encrypted data, and the idea of making lights etc BLE 5 relays / friends makes a lot of sense, but until the rest of the eco system catches up, and the BLE 5 module price comes down (yes, we see that happening already), we think BLE 4.2 for small low power sensors still has merit.

BLE008A TI CC2640 Logging & Settings Plug In Module

A CC2640 with a FLASH (SPI) and EEPROM (IIC) on a small plug in module (JST JMC receptical on the BLE008A).

Primarily intended to be a plug in module to add data logging and BLE enabled settings into a product. The demo firmware will provide a UART MODBUS interface for logging and settings communications with the host system.

This board is a tiny 20mm x 30mm.

It includes a JST SH 1mm 5pin connector for the cJTAG. The precrimped JST SH cable is available from OnLine marketplaces, and its easy to connect to a CC2650EXL launchpad for a programmer.

The JST JMC connector comes in different plug heights, allowing flexibility in the stacking with the host board.

The BLE008A can also be uses on its own, plug into your IO Sensor board, and you have an instant data logging solution with a BLE interface.

The board mounts a Radioland CC2640-S1 module. These modules have a ipx/ufl RF connector. You can use an external antenna for improved RF performance.

BLE CC2650STK Development – Switch Contact Monitor

bit of an update on BLE – voltage free switch contact monitor – low power – with contact wetting boost circuit

We are using the TI CC2650STK and have a small development board with our boost circuit. We are using periodic monitoring to have a low average power consumption. Depending on the setup – up to 5 years on a SAFT LS14250 cell.

We have setup a contact state and click counter, and have the data in the advertising, so no connection required to obtain data.

Current Measurement – Wide Dynamic Range

We needed to measure the current consumption of the wireless IO points we are developing using the CC2650 and CC1310.

We decided to put together our own device that uses multiple LTC6102 devices – one setup for µA and one setup for 100’s µA.

The Headers suit the TI launchpad configuration, the target is a TI TM4C129E Launchpad with Ethernet Interface. The TM4C129E has a fast ADC, sampling at low MHz is possible.

Oh Dear, it’s Business as Usual …

Today, I was made aware of an announcement from Revolv (a NEST Company). See the following quotes from their site…  (http://revolv.com/)

“What happens to my Revolv service? – As of May 15, 2016, Revolv service will no longer be available. The Revolv app won’t open and the hub won’t work.”

“Is my product still under warranty? – No. Our one-year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship has expired for all Revolv products.”

and if you do a quick search, (there’s plenty on the internet at the moment) the topic has moved along to “help on a case by case basis”, after an interesting barrage and ongoing public dirty laundry airing. Including the usual top management claims that the engineers they obtained by acquisition did not perform to expectations. (yeah sure, smells like …)

The stainless steel probe pocket installs into a compression fitting, rotated so that the offset sensor is downstream from the abrasive medium flow.

The chart below is a simpel temp rise test (drop three PT100 probes into a cup of hot water), and shows the comparative time responses for 3 different probe assemblies.

Probe “A” is a thin stainless steel pocket.

Probe “B” is the stainless steel pocket S121 pictured above with offset PT100 sensor.

Probe “C” is a stainless steel pock (same dimensions) with the PT100 centered.
