Introduction
WELcoME to
uk AD & BiogAs 2012!
The largest dedicated anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas expo
and conference ever to take place in the UK!
Building an AD plant is by no means easy, but the rate of new AD plants coming online
is increasing with companies from a range of sectors entering the market – a clear sign
that the predicted growth in AD is actually happening. Many big household names have
now realised that AD is an excellent means of lowering costs, reducing emissions and
generating additional revenue for their business, bringing it to the forefront of treatment
options for organic arisings.
UK AD & Biogas 2012 is the place to witness this growth first-hand, offering more exhibitors – with
equipment live on the show floor including a biogas tractor and biomethane upgrading unit – more
visitors and more feature areas than ever before. Continually improving, we have a fantastic number
of new features, including our AD Professional Clinics area and the first ever AD industry Awards
celebrating innovation, outstanding achievements and best practice across the AD industry.
Alongside the show, the Conference ‘AD: your Missing link’ has an outstanding line-up of speakers
discussing how AD can benefit local authorities, and the food and drink and farming industries.
showcasing why AD is the answer to achieving maximum waste and resource management, and
sustainable intensification of farming and food production, the two dedicated conference days ‘getting
Value from your Food Waste’ and ‘The Business Case for on-Farm AD’ will provide delegates with
everything they need to successfully integrate AD into their business. And of course we have the
ever-popular seminar areas featuring over 22 sessions throughout the event. With so much to see these
will be two of the most productive days of the year for the AD industry.
However the growth in the industry and in this years’ show takes place against a backdrop of tough
financial conditions. The government is under enormous pressure to reduce the deficit, forcing DECC
and others to reduce spending and demonstrate value for money. More widely, the economy as a whole
has been held back by the difficulty of accessing finance – and the AD market is no exception. Certainly
the government could do more to recognise the potential for green economic growth that sectors like AD
could deliver with the right level of subsidy, policy and regulatory support.
Despite this, we are moving in the right direction and the future for AD looks increasingly bright.
Crucially, later this year the government will present its gas generation strategy, focusing attention back
on the key issue of providing energy security for Britain. The UK has a pitiful amount of gas storage
compared to others in Europe, and will soon be importing over 80% of our gas. With eight out of ten
British households reliant on the gas grid the possibility of a gas shortage is politically explosive to say
the least. Even if supplies are maintained, the price of gas is set to double in the next five years. The need
for sustainable, renewable gas will soon be a major priority for politicians.
ADBA will continue its work lobbying government to deliver the solutions to your problems. ADBA is
here to work for you, the AD industry, so please come and talk to us at the show. This is your opportunity
to make sure that we understand the issues that you need solving over the next year.
Thank you to everyone who has helped to deliver UK AD & Biogas 2012 and a big thank you to all our
sponsors including Tamar Energy, Xylem Water solutions UK, landia, Compass Renewables, Walker
Morris, Aerocover, Monsal, imtech Process and Vogelsang for all their support.
i look forward to meeting you over the two days and wish you an informative and successful show!
tHE roLE of ADBA
By Charlotte Morton, ADBA’s Chief Executive
in challenging economic times, AD is the
ultimate good news story. it can help
deliver jobs, growth and energy security,
while reducing waste and supporting the future
of farming and domestic food production. in
delivering in all these areas, the AD industry will
also cut carbon emissions across a huge range
of sectors and ensure that we make the most
efficient possible use of our resources.
one of ADBA’s key roles as the sector’s trade
association is to make sure that different
government departments understand what AD
can deliver for them. We are working closely
with Bis to demonstrate the sector’s economic
value to the UK, and with DECC on what AD
can deliver in terms of cutting greenhouse gas
emissions and generating a flexible, base load
form of renewable energy. As the lead department
on AD, Defra have a wide-ranging overview
and we are working with them on delivering
the AD Action Plan, along with issues around
waste, recycling and supporting farming. We
are also working with Clg on waste collection
and planning, and with DfT on the benefits of
biomethane as a transport fuel, particularly
for HgVs.
All this work is vital to ensure that support for AD
is clear and stable, to ensure that the AD market
becomes an ever more attractive place in which
to operate and invest. so many positive stories
across so many areas of government policy
make advocating the right support for the
industry challenging.
That’s why we’ve put a lot of work recently into
honing our key messages, and will be devoting
even more work over the coming year to ensuring
that individuals, communities, local and national
government understand what AD can deliver both
for them and for the UK as a whole. At UK AD &
Biogas 2012, i am particularly looking forward to
the launch of the independent CentreForum think
tank report into how policy at government level
The UK’s 16 million
tonnes of food waste gives
off more than 20 million
tonnes of CO 2 e
“We want to ensure that individuals,
communities, local and national
government understands what AD
can deliver both for them and for the
UK as a whole”
Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive, ADBA
can better support the industry, alongside ADBA’s
‘beginner’s guides’ to AD for farmers, the public
and politicians. you’ll be able to pick up copies of
all of these at the ADBA stand.
To maximise the benefits from AD, one of our
central messages is that source segregating the
collection of organic wastes is vital. The UK’s
16 million tonnes of food waste gives off more
than 20 million tonnes of Co 2 e, 3% of the UK’s
emissions. A further 1% comes from the use of
artificial fertilisers. Uniquely, AD tackles both
of these, reducing methane emissions while
producing renewable energy and biofertiliser.
With PAs110 and proposed Europe-wide end
of waste criteria requiring source segregation to
Role of ADBA
ensure the production of quality biofertilisers, we
are calling for a clear strategy from Westminster
in favour of the separation of waste streams from
homes and businesses, which has the further
benefit of reducing waste overall.
Throughout our work with government, ADBA
continues to advocate clear, stable strategies.
This includes where they see the best use of
biogas, to inform their priorities with incentives,
and the use of scientific evidence as a base for
decisions and statements on the use of purposegrown
crops in AD. ADBA strongly believes that
purpose grown crops are one of the best forms
of bioenergy available: they produce an excellent
energy return per hectare, while complementing
food production by supporting crop rotations,
increasing soil quality and returning nutrients to
land. The energy produced can help reduce the
financial and carbon cost of farming, and provide
a stable revenue stream which supports farming
businesses, helping to keep farmers farming.
Acting as a voice for the industry in all of these
areas is only part of ADBA’s role. you can read
more about the activities of members in our
thirteen working groups on page 56 – they have
delivered outputs such as the Due Diligence
template, a competency matrix for AD operators
and a guide to terminology in the industry. ADBA
members have also been working fantastically
hard to produce a general guide to AD, which
will be published later this year. More widely,
our team works hard to support our members’
businesses, through events such as UK AD
& Biogas, the industry Awards, our National
Conference, R&D Forums and Members’ Meeting,
by providing advice, membership services and
marketing opportunities.
There is ever more focus around the world on
how we use our resources, and how we get more
value from using less. AD is the missing link in
so many sectors: helping achieve sustainable
intensification in farming and food production,
realising the greatest environmental benefit from
food waste, producing a flexible low carbon gas
and reducing our reliance on energy-intensive
artificial fertilisers. The AD sector is central to the
green growth which the UK so desperately needs.
= 3%
of the UK’s emissions
Purple Seminar
10.00 Feedstock Pre-Treatment
Pre-treating AD feedstocks has a number of important aims, including de-packaging, removing
contamination and improving biogas yields. After an introduction from Terry Brownhill, Eddie
simpson will discuss the benefits of a pre-digestion percolation and hydrolysis stage, with Chris
oldfield considering the benefits, and potential pitfalls, of shredding materials for AD.
Chair: Terry Brownhill, Eaton Management
11.00 Biogas in Transport: the Roadmap
Using biomethane as a transport fuel offers huge greenhouse gas and particulate emission
savings, and it can be used in existing natural gas vehicles without the need for further
modification. That – and the rising price of diesel – is making it an increasingly attractive option,
particularly in the heavy goods sector where there are few alternative low-carbon options. A
number of obstacles to the sector still remain however: the infrastructure for gas refuelling is not
yet in place, and there is no direct incentive for biomethane producers to supply the transport
sector. in this session Andrew will present ADBA’s strategy for advancing the sector, steve will
discuss the full results of Coca-Cola’s trial of biomethane trucks, while Chris will consider his
experience of the transport fuel market and how it is developing.
Chair: Andrew Whittles, low Emission strategies
14.00 Developing Smarter AD
Developing AD projects quickly, sustainably and cost effectively is the ultimate goal of those
responsible for managing and delivering AD projects. Using the latest in science, engineering
and economics, steve Broome will introduce CPi’s AD Development Centre which is designed to
help organisations of all sizes to develop anaerobic digestion (AD) processes for conventional
and novel waste streams. Mark Bedford will outline how computational process modelling can
assist in the delivery of AD facilities in the waste sector using a short live demonstration of an
operating waste plant.
Steve Broome, CPi, Mark Bedford, Wardell Armstrong
15.00 Optimising Digester Performance
Maximising gas yield and quality digestate production are critical to the success of an AD plant.
in this session, Andy Mail will talk about the benefits of percolation as a pre-treatment method
and the addition of molasses into the digester, Ray long will present on the field trial results of
Citadel’s Biocat+, Eilert Balssen will consider how mixing can be optimised based on viscosity,
while gunnel Hagstam will examine how the treatment of household waste can be optimised.
Andy Mail, AMEC, Ray Long, Citadel, Dr Eilert Balssen, Xylem Water solutions,
Gunnel Hagstam, Kemira Chemicals
16.00 R&D Taster Session: Optimising Bacteria
10.00 Morning Debate: The Range of AD Technology
AD is a wide-ranging technology able to treat a variety of organic feedstocks – which is not
always well understood. Dorian Harrison will chair a debate on what type of technology
works best in what scenarios, with Robin szmidt, Amaya Arias-garcia and Tina Wolter giving
examples of projects they have been involved in. They will consider the range of ‘wet’ and ‘dry’
technologies, and what buyers need to consider when choosing which technology to use.
Chair: Dorian Harrison, Monsal
11.00 Procuring AD Technology
With a huge range of potential suppliers and technologies available for every part of the
AD process, it can be difficult to know where to start. However, making good decisions in
procurement is critical to project success. The technology needs to be right for the feedstock and
location, and you need to have confidence that it will operate efficiently and to its potential. Nick
Churchward, Andrew Jenkins and Hugh Bulson discuss the issues you need to consider, and
the questions you need to ask of suppliers.
Chair: Nick Churchward, Burges salmon
Andrew Jenkins, Zebec Biogas, Dr Hugh Bulson, organic Resource Agency
12.00 Making Better Use of Heat
Making the most efficient and effective use of the products of the AD process is paramount
to the success of the industry, and heat from CHP is no exception. This session will consider
innovative ways of using heat produced, including a presentation from steve Richmond on the
use of AD in district heating systems, a discussion from Hans Wain on how heat can be used to
generate extra electricity and a paper from Jos Van Buijtenen on how the organic Rankine Cycle
(oRC) can be integrated into the AD process.
12.55 LUNCH
14.00 Focus on Digestate: PAS110 and the Future of End of Waste
Five AD plants in the UK are now accredited under PAs110, the end of waste specification which
guarantees that digestate produced is of a high quality and can be applied to land without being
subject to waste regulations. However, some AD operators have encountered difficulties complying
with the requirements of the specification and achieving PAs110 status. Becky Arnold will discuss
the experience of Biogengreenfinch in meeting the specification, while Nina sweet will give an
update on the future of PAs110, in the context of a current review of aspects of the specification,
and proposals for Europe-wide end of waste legislation.
Becky Arnold, Biogengreenfinch, Nina Sweet, WRAP
15.00 Focus on Digestate
There is little doubt that digestate is currently under-valued, and that developing markets
for the material is important for the future of the AD industry. This session, introduced by
WRAP digestate specialist David Tompkins, will consider market development work such
as that undertaken by Howard Robinson, research into the effect of digestate on soils with
a presentation from John Walsh, and technological developments such as Huber’s work on
plastics removal.
Chair: David Tompkins, WRAP
Howard Robinson, sKM Enviros, John Walsh, Bangor University,
Tony Clutten, Huber Technology
16.00 Biogas Upgrading Technology
The wide range of biogas clean-up and upgrading technologies will be considered in this
session, alongside the issues around network entry facilities, the barriers to grid entry and the
potential for pressurising gas ‘uphill’. stephen McCulloch and Coen Meijers will discuss their
grid injection projects, at stockport and Poundbury respectively, which are set to come online
this summer, while Alison Cartwright will provide a comprehensive outline of the requirements
and equipment needed for a developer of a biomethane to grid project.
now in its third year UK AD & Biogas has
come a long way since its inaugural
show. The industry’s growth is clear to
see and it is vital that we celebrate this progress
by rewarding success. That is why this year UK
AD & Biogas is holding the UK’s first ever AD
& Biogas industry Awards Ceremony, on the
evening of the 4 July. The awards, hosted by
The Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association
(ADBA), in association with Monsal and organised
by letsrecycle are recognising innovation and
achievements across all areas of the AD industry.
identifying the best of the best in each category,
this new industry highlight is guaranteed to raise
the profile of the industry as a whole.
ADBA’s Chief Executive, Charlotte Morton explains
the thinking behind the awards: “As the trade body
representing the UK AD industry one of our key
aims is to promote best practice and innovation in
the AD sector. organising the industry’s very own
awards supports this effort whilst rewarding the
teams behind these successful projects.”
During the ceremony, ten awards will be
presented to organisations from across the
industry who have successfully demonstrated
their capabilities and achievements. The event
is putting inspiring businesses and authorities
who have successfully integrated AD into their
business or community, into the spotlight and
provides dinner guests with the chance to meet
the teams behind the projects and find out how
they have achieved success.
“The awards reflect the significant
growth and maturing in the sector
since the last UK AD & Biogas 2012
show 12 months ago. Monsal are
delighted to be sponsoring this
sector event and are looking forward
to a fantastic night.”
Aidan Cumiskey, Managing Director, Monsal
With Charles secrett, Chair of the Board
of Triodos Renewables and a leading UK
tHE vALuE of AD
AD has the potential to deliver over 40TWh of renewable energy,
equivalent to over 10% of the UK’s domestic gas demand. The biogas
produced from AD is a flexible energy form which can help reduce the
carbon emissions of difficult sectors such as heavy goods transport.
And production is constant, so it can balance the intermittent generation
of other renewables.
it’s a £2-3bn industry which generates lots of energy, lowers
greenhouse gas emissions, saves money on waste collection and
treatment, and generates businesses additional revenue.
AD could also provide a significant proportion – around a quarter
– of the UK’s renewable fertilisers. Producing digestate to replace
artificial fertilisers, as well as providing farms with both energy
and revenue, puts AD at the centre of climate-smart farming and
sustainable food production.
Working Groups
Working groups BiogAs to ELEctricitY
ADBA has 13 working groups covering every aspect of the anaerobic
digestion and biogas industry. They are the principal mechanism
for ADBA’s policy development, and give members a chance to
have their say, contribute to decisions for the industry and discuss matters
of common concern with other businesses. Each working group has been set
up to be more than just a talking shop: they have specific work and projects,
which aim to achieve useful outcomes for the anaerobic digestion industry.
They also contribute to ADBA’s response to consultations and other requests
for information from government, which gives them a key role in forming
policy and ensuring that the voice of the industry is heard.
Following the government’s publication of the Anaerobic Digestion strategy
and Action Plan in June 2011, the working groups have lead on delivering
the actions for the industry for which ADBA is responsible. our Due Diligence
template, produced in conjunction with WRAP, was reviewed by the lawyers
Working group, whilst the Training and safety Wg produced a Competency
and skills Matrix and the Process and Technical Wg has recently created
a glossary of terms for the industry. other tasks from the Action Plan that
are currently ongoing which working groups are leading on include the
development of a template suite of legal precedent documents, identifying
training requirements and developing Best Practice for AD.
Working groups meet every couple of months in various locations. The
latest meeting dates are circulated to members in ADBA’s fortnightly emails,
and directly to individuals who have taken part or expressed interest in each
group. With the exception of the Process and Technical Wg, membership is
open to all ADBA members – and the minutes and outputs of the groups are
also available to members via the Association’s website. More information
about the working groups is available either by contacting individual chairs,
or via Jordan Marshall (jordan.marshall@adbiogas.co.uk),
who coordinates the groups.
AgricuLturE
The Agriculture Wg considers all aspects of AD on farms. it is attended
by representatives from WRAP and the Environment Agency, who update
members on their work and regulatory developments, and can answer
questions or take actions back. Topics of discussion include the full range of
issues surrounding on farm AD, including: feedstock, purpose grown crops
digestate disposal and storage options, compatibility of digestate application
with customer protocol (in particular supermarkets), planning and permitting
requirements, gHg emissions from AD and funding options, as well as
engagement with key stakeholders and lobbying on behalf of members on
issues of concern.
