Before I jump into the Dawgs 

annual clash with the Gators, 

thoughts and prayers go out 

to the family of the legendary Charley 

Trippi, who at age 100 passed last 

week in Athens. Mr. Trippi’s prowess 

in athletics (both collegiate and professional) was on par 

with the great olympian Jim Thorpe. Of course, Bulldog fans 

appreciated Trippi most for his spectacular accomplishments 

while at our beloved University. Again, everyone at Bulldawg 

Illustrated sends our condolences and we look forward 

to bringing our readers a special tribute in our next issue 

(Georgia-Tennessee). 

Back to Georgia-Florida … it’s sort of ironic that this issue’s 

cover is all about reminding everyone in Bulldog Nation not 

to look past the Gators (to the Vols’ visit to Athens in two 

Saturdays), when low and behold I just did it myself in the 

above paragraph. However, I will give myself a pass because 

it was necessary to let folks know when to expect our special 

send-off to one of the greatest Bulldogs ever. 

Unfortunately, in my opinion, too many smart Bulldog fans 

(that I have run into over the last week or so) are already 

champing at the bit for the Tennessee game, while discounting 

the game on this week’s schedule. You expect that from fans, 

but you can bet Kirby Smart is also fighting hard to remind his 

players that the marquee Bulldogs-Volunteers game will lose 

a lot of its luster, if they don’t show up in Jacksonville 100% 

focused versus the Florida Gators. 

With this cover of BI and the awesome photo of Darnell 

Washington (No. 0), I feel our magazine has done its part to 

remind the Bulldog Nation … ‘0 (Zero) Looking Ahead’ against 

the 2022 Gators. 

Yours truly was a mere 13-year-old in 1985 when mighty 

Florida arrived to the Gator Bowl sporting the No. 1 ranking 

in the country. When the final whistle sounded, they left the 

banks of the St. Johns River dragging their deflated tails back 

to Gainesville with a 24-3 loss to the Dawgs. 

The above history lesson goes out to any Georgia fans 

that think the impossible can’t happen. No doubt about it, 

Florida can make their season (under first year head coach 

Billy Napier) by upsetting one of their most hated rivals on 

Saturday. 

Nonetheless, even with my inner most Munson brewing, I 

have faith that Coach Smart, his team leaders and everyone on 

the Georgia sideline will arrive to Jacksonville with their game 

faces on. 

There is another reason I chose The Big O (Darnell 

Washington) for this cover. Washington is Georgia’s most 

menacing looking player and amplifies there is no denying the 

2022 Dawgs have a substantial size and depth advantage over 

the 2022 Gators. Also, simply look at the two teams tight end 

units. Georgia has four to five players that would start on most 

teams in the SEC. Finally, don’t miss Jeff Dantzler’s A View From 

Jacksonville (page 24) with broadcaster Frank Frangie. The 

longtime broadcaster (who while encouraged by Florida’s hire 

in Napier) predicts Georgia winning the game 41-24. “There 

is a gulf between these two teams right now,” Frangie said. “I 

can’t imagine it being much closer than that.” 

Still, even though the depth gap is vast, I head into Saturday’s 

game wide open in knowing that anything can happen in 

Jacksonville. Be ready Dawg fans … ‘0 (Zero) Looking Ahead.’ 

This 80-page issue (plus plenty of shopping, eating and 

libations in the Golden Isles) should help pass the time 

between now and when toe meets leather on Saturday. 

On the sports front, I love that (on page 77) Kevin Butler’s 

Players of the Game (from the Vandy game) are all freshmen. 

That says a lot about the above-mentioned depth within the 

Georgia football program. And Hamilton Culpepper is back in 

this issue with a stellar interview with former Dawg roverback 

John Little (page 72). A big congrats to both John and Champ 

Bailey who are the two Georgia players being inducted into 

the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame on Friday. Also, former BI 

writer Murray Poole came out of retirement again for me 

(pages 71, 72) in this issue to pen a review of Loran Smith’s 

book “Return to Glory.” 

On the social front, you can’t fill 80 pages of content without 

a ton of fan photos. This issue (beginning on page 30), the 

BI camera delivers from the Vandy game to the Bulldog 

Open to the Presidents Club reception. On pages 28 and 29, 

enjoy getting to know this issue’s Georgia Girl, Lillian Owen 

Magruder. Her fond memories of UGA Tennis camps with 

Coach Magill, Diaz and Wallace combined with her favorite 

quote being Kirby’s halftime speech from last year’s Georgia- 

Florida game make her a keeper in my book. 

Then on page 68, Savannahian Pierce Cannon will 

definitely hit home with 912ers when he calls his greatest 

accomplishment being when he held Glynn Academy (No. 1 

pick in the NBA) super star Kwame Brown to six points during 

his high school basketball days. Finally, Loran Smith continues 

our Bulldogs of the 4th Estate series (page 67) reminding our 

readers (including myself) that longtime Bulldog radio man 

(before Larry Munson) Ed Thilenius cut his teeth as a writer 

for the Athens Banner-Herald. Long live the scribes and print 

journalism. 

Whoa, I’m dazed from writing this note to include all the 

content in this 80-page whopper. I am so glad I had the bye 

week, which also afforded me the opportunity to celebrate 

my mother’s (Sudy Vance Leavy) 80th and my good friend’s 

(Jeff Ramsey) 50th. Just like the tradition of the Georgia- 

Florida game being in Jacksonville, nothing beats quality time 

with family and friends. Just don’t forget … ‘0 (Zero) Looking 

Ahead.’ See you in the Golden Isles for pre-game and Saturday 

in Jacksonville for another battle with the jort-wearing reptiles.

Forever SEC foes’ fans relished in reminding the Bulldog Nation 

that 1980 was Georgia’s last national championship, but that 

narrative is dead with Kirby’s Dawgs doing the talk on the field

Georgia is heading to 

Jacksonville atop the polls 

with a perfect 7-0 record as the 

reigning national champions of 

college football. Florida is 4-3 with losses 

to Kentucky, Tennessee and LSU. The 

Gators led in all three of those games. The 

Bulldogs have beaten Oregon. Florida has 

topped Utah. 

So many times in the 20th century, the 

winner of this game has had the inside 

track to a berth in the Southeastern 

Conference Championship Game. In fact, 

in the last 20 SEC title tilts, Georgia or 

Florida have appeared in Atlanta as the 

winner of the East Division 15 times. The 

Bulldogs have won the SEC East nine 

times dating back to 2002, while Florida 

has been to the Georgia Dome/Mercedes 

Benz Stadium on six occasions over that 

stretch. Georgia, interestingly, suffered 

gut-punch losses to the Gators in 2002, 

2003 and 2005, which proved costly in 

the pursuit of the national championship, 

but those three Bulldog teams all found 

their way to the SEC Championship 

Game, capturing the league crown in 

2002 and 2005. But that’s an anomaly. 

It’s been the Bulldogs or Gators in 

Atlanta for seven consecutive years, with 

the Gators winning in Jacksonville and 

advancing out of the East in 2015, 2016 

and 2020. Georgia has played for the SEC 

title in four of the last five seasons, with 

Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs topping the Gators 

en route to Mercedes Benz in 2017, 

2018, 2019 and 2021. In 2017, 2018 and 

2019, the Bulldogs posted 11-1 regular 

seasons, while going 12-0 a year ago. 

The Dogs won the SEC championship 

and Rose Bowl in the College Football 

Playoff in 2017. Georgia fell in de facto 

national quarterfinal games in 2018 and 

2019, costing the Bulldogs a shot at the 

national title. Last season, the Dogs lost 

in Atlanta, but earned a berth in the CFP 

and defeated Michigan in the Orange 

Bowl and Alabama in the National 

Championship Game to capture college 

football’s ultimate prize. 

No longer can arch rival fan bases, who’s 

schools have been dominated by the 

Bulldogs, significantly in the glory-laden 

Smart era, tease the Georgia faithful 

about how long it had been since the 

program’s most recent national title. 

Georgia has beaten Auburn 15 of the 

last 18 times. Under Smart’s watch, dating 

back to the revenge victory over the 

Tigers in the 2017 SEC Championship 

Game, the Bulldogs have won six in a 

row over Auburn. That includes a 42-10 

victory over Auburn earlier this month at 

Sanford Stadium, an eighth consecutive 

win in the series of the Tigers Between 

the Hedges. Bryan Harsin, whose seat 

is mighty warm, is the second Auburn 

coach to square off against Smart since 

2017. 

Following the Gators this weekend, 

Georgia will host Tennessee. The 

Bulldogs have won five in a row over the 

Volunteers under Smart’s watch, and 10 

of the last 12 dating to the Mark Richt era. 

In the Vols two wins in 2015 and 2016, 

Georgia blew a 24-3 lead in Knoxville, 

and then were upended by the Hail Mary 

at Sanford Stadium. Josh Heupel has 

Tennessee soaring again. He is the third 

Volunteers head coach Smart has faced. 

Since 2001, the Bulldogs are 17-3 

against the Yellow Jackets. Oh how it 

could be 20 in a row. There was no game 

between the two in-state arch enemies in 

2020 due to conference only scheduling 

in the SEC. Georgia is on a four game 

winning streak against Tech, outpointing 

the North Avenue Trade School 180- 

35 over that stretch. With Geoff Collins 

ousting - he never coached Between 

the Hedges and his Tech teams lost by a 

cumulative 97-7 total in 2019 and 2021 

- interim head man Brent Key will be the 

third Yellow Jackets head coach to square 

off against Smart’s Dogs when the two 

meet the Saturday after Thanksgiving. 

Paul Johnson, (Collins’ predecessor) went 

3-3 versus Georgia at Sanford Stadium. 

There was a great sense of relief not 

having to prepare for that equalizing 

triple option. 

And then there are the Gators. 

From 1990-2010, Florida went 18-3 

against Georgia. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. There 

were a lot of long rides home from the 

Golden Isles for two decades. Georgia 

had won 15 of the previous 19, but then 

Steve Spurrier arrived and times changed. 

The tables turned some following Urban 

Meyer’s departure from Gainesville, as 

Mark Richt’s Bulldogs won three in a row 

from 2011-2013. But then Florida would 

win three straight, including a 2014 upset 

coached by current Bulldogs co-defensive 

coordinator Will Muschamp. Once Smart 

got the Bulldogs machine rolling in 2017, 

things turned back Georgia’s way. A 42-7 

rout of the Gators showed Jim McElwain 

the door. Dan Mullen came on board and 

Florida went to major bowls in ‘18 and 

‘19 after falling to Georgia. The Gators 

beat the Bulldogs in 2020 and were 

on the way to the SEC Championship 

Game and another major bowl. He 

once had the attendance of the Florida 

spring game announced as a total 

corresponding to how many days it had 

been since the Bulldogs 1980 national 

championship. 

But a thrown shoe against LSU started 

a tremendous ripple effect. Georgia has 

won 25 of 26 games since, while things 

went south for the Gators. The Bulldogs 

34-7 victory over the Gators last season 

dropped the tenure of Dan Mullen, who 

lost his final four SEC games as Florida’s 

head coach, five and a half feet under. 

Now Billy Napier is Florida’s head coach, 

the third that Smart has squared off 

against. If the Gators win, that would 

be two of three in the series, a win in 

Napier’s Jacksonville debut, a big jolt 

for Florida and a dagger to the Bulldogs 

championship hopes. 

Meanwhile, it’s a chance for Georgia to 

make it 8-0 on the season, keep those 

championship dreams thriving and 

make it five of six against the Gators. 

Plus, it would start Napier off with a 

losing record in the series. That is very 

important. It’s hard to go uphill in this 

series. Losses to Ron Zook’s Gators in 

2002 and 2003 left lasting scars for Richt’s 

Bulldogs. 

But last season’s national title exorcized 

a lot of demons. 

Now with the glow of that National 

Championship crown beaming for the 

Georgia faithful, the Bulldog aim to 

further a march to glory in 2022 and 

continue some wonderful trends against 

arch-nemesis who can’t scream 1980 as a 

falling insult.

The stage is set for another colossal showdown between 

old rivals, as Georgia and Florida renew one of college 

football’s grand rivalries Saturday from the banks of the 

mighty St. Johns River in Jacksonville. 

Both teams, as usual, are coming off open dates. 

Georgia is riding high. The reigning national champions 

head into the game with a perfect 7-0 record, and 4-0 mark 

in Southeastern Conference play. Since losing to the Gators 

in 2020, Georgia has won 25 of its last 26 games. 

Last time out, the Bulldogs rolled over Vanderbilt 55-0 at 

Sanford Stadium. It was a second straight impressive margin 

- Georgia defeated Auburn 42-10 in Athens the week prior 

- since Georgia survived a bona fide upset scare, escaping 

with a 26-22 win over Missouri. 

Georgia navigated the first half of the schedule unscathed. 

The Bulldogs have done so while suffering through a slew 

of injuries to several top flight players, who have missed 

significant action. With the open date, the Bulldogs are 

hopeful of getting some of those injured players back for 

the clash with Florida, which begins a true gauntlet of major 

tests for the defending champs. 

Florida is 4-3 on the season, 1-3 in SEC play, in Billy Napier’s 

first season as the Gators head coach. The Gators are coming 

off a 45-35 shootout loss to LSU in the swamp. One week 

earlier, that same Missouri team that nearly upset the 

Bulldogs, fell to Florida 24-17 in Gainesville. That win over 

the Mizzou Tigers broke a string of six straight SEC losses 

dating back to last season. That includes a 34-7 Georgia 

victory over Dan Mullen’s Gators in Jacksonville. 

Under Kirby Smart’s watch, Georgia has won four of the last 

five meetings against Florida. In each of those four years that 

the Bulldogs won in Jacksonville, Smart’s Dogs advanced 

to the Southeastern Conference Championship Game. The 

last team to have such a run of success out of the SEC East 

was Florida under Steve Spurrier’s watch in the 1990s. The 

legendary Gators Heisman Trophy winner and Hall of Fame 

Coach guided Florida to the first five SEC Championship 

Games from 1992-1996. 

Napier will be the third different Florida coach to square 

off against Smart’s Bulldogs. They coached together as 

assistants for Nick Saban at Alabama, including the Crimson 

Tide’s 2015 national title team. 

Georgia is still in the thick of everything, once again 

dreaming big, while Florida will try to play spoiler, jumpstart 

the second half of the season and get a signature SEC upset 

win. This is the most talented SEC opponent the Bulldogs 

have faced this season. Though Florida’s record isn’t what 

the Gainesville faithful had hoped for thus far in Napier’s first 

year, funny things happen in Jacksonville, so Smart knows 

his Bulldogs will have to be at their best to secure a victory 

over this long time nemesis.

FOOTBALL 

BULLDOGS TO WATCH

STETSON BENNETT (QB #13) - Bennett started the Vanderbilt 

game completing 18 for his first 20 pass attempts, before finishing 

24/30 for 289 yards and two TDs. Prior to the Vanderbilt game, 

Bennett had a three game passing-TD drought. Florida’s defense is 

formidable and the Dawgs will need a healthy Bennett distributing 

the ball to a multitude of weapons to be at their best against the 

Gators. Hitting a few deep balls would be a refreshing sight and 

would really open up the potential of this offense. 

BEAR ALEXANDER 

DEFENSIVE TACKLE 

AD MITCHELL (WR #5) - Mitchell has missed significant time 

after a seemingly innocuous ankle injury in the first series against 

Samford in the second game of the season. The hope is that 

Mitchell is being held out in an effort to get him fully healthy for a 

tough stretch run against Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi State and 

Kentucky. If Mitchell can return to the form as witnessed against 

Oregon, which included four receptions for 65 yards and a TD, the 

Dawgs should be even more dynamic in their passing attack against 

the Gators. 

DARNELL WASHINGTON (TE #0) - Washington is often 

the undervalued “other tight end” that gets overshadowed by 

the hyper-athletic Brock Bowers. Despite his mammoth size, 

Washington is plenty athletic himself, as evidenced by his superb 

one-handed catch and run against Vanderbilt. Washington also 

added a circus, sideline catch that contributed to his 78 yards 

receiving on six total catches. Washington is a dominant blocker 

and, along with Bowers, will be a focus of the Gators defensive 

game plan. 

MALAKI STARKS 

SAFETY 

BEAR ALEXANDER (DT #99) - Big Bear Alexander has earned 

playing time along the interior defensive line despite being a true 

freshman. Alexander had shoulder surgery after arriving at UGA 

and was not able to fully participate in offseason strength and 

conditioning. Nevertheless, Alexander is plenty stout and possesses 

a quick burst that should enable him to contribute quality snaps, 

even after the return of Jalen Carter.

John Lastinger was the quarterback in Jacksonville 

for Georgia’s 44-0 victory in 1982 and 10-9 triumph 

in 1983 over the Gators, en route to 11-1 and 10-1-1 

Sugar and Cotton Bowl seasons. 

The Bulldogs rode a dominant rushing attack to 

a 42-7 win over Florida in 2017, with Sony Michel 

leading the way, carrying six times for 137 yards and 

two TDs, including a 74-yarder. 

Jake Fromm had a fantastic game at quarterback 

for the Bulldogs against Florida in 2019, completing 

20 of 30 aerials for 279 yards, a pair of touchdowns 

and a clutch third down pass. 


MALAKI STARKS (S #24) - Starks, another true 

freshman, is now fully entrenched as the starting safety 

beside Chris Smith. In fact, Starks played more defensive 

snaps than any other defensive player against Vanderbilt. 

Given Anthony Richardson’s struggles throwing the ball, 

Florida has become a run-heavy offense. Against the Gators, 

Starks will be asked to come into the box and make plays 

against a potent and talented run game. 

KELEE RINGO 

CORNERBACK 

KELEE RINGO (DB #5) - The usually terrific Ringo is 

coming off a game with a few missteps, including a pass 

interference penalty and a mistimed jump that could have 

led to a long reception if not for a dropped pass. The preseason 

All-American is a physical specimen with size that 

is not typically seen in a cornerback. The Gators, as they 

normally do, will take some deep shots off play action, and 

Ringo will need to prevent any big plays over the top. This 

will be an excellent test for Ringo and the secondary heading 

into a difficult stretch of games.

GATORS TO WATCH

BILLY NAPIER (HC) - This isn’t the start that Billy Napier was hoping 

for to begin his tenure with the Gators, but the SEC is a solid jump 

having previously coached in the Sun Belt Conference at the University 

of Louisiana. That being said, Napier has yet to tap into his unlocked 

potential. With the Warhawks, Napier saw three consecutive ten or more 

win seasons and left with a 40-12 record overall. Ten wins is now out of 

reach for the Gators, but that doesn’t mean they can’t beat the Dawgs in 

the always throw-the-stats out environment of Jacksonville.

COMMUNICATIONS 

MONTRELL JOHNSON JR. (RB) - Following head coach Billy 

Napier over from the University of Louisiana, running back Montrell 

Johnson has done nothing but stunned in his short time in The Swamp. 

He ranks top 10 in the SEC in rushing yards with 425 on just 59 attempts; 

his rushing efficiency at 7.20 yards per carry is one of the best in the 

conference putting him just behind Alabama’s Jahmyr Gibbs. Together 

he, fellow back Trevor Etienne and his quarterback Richardson make for a 

dangerous Florida running game. 

ANTHONY RICHARDSON (QB) - Albeit it hasn’t been the season 

Anthony Richardson’s camp was hoping for six games in, but regardless you 

can’t deny the sheer athleticism of this guy. It’s his first year starting under a 

new head coach in one of the most competitive college football leagues in 

the country. Despite his sometimes struggles, he’s still managed to amass 

over 1,300 passing yards and almost 400 on the ground. Look for AR to 

provide a spark once his name is called in Jacksonville. 

JUSTIN SHORTER (WR) - Justin Shorter is one of the most explosive 

receivers in the SEC. He is second in the conference in yards per reception 

at 22.5. Any time he sees the ball you can expect it to go for a chunk play. 

On top of that he’s also 7th in the SEC in total receiving yards having 

collected 405 to this point in the season.

AMARI BURNEY (LB) - Playing off-ball linebacker, Amari Burney 

has been one of the Gators’ biggest playmakers so far this season. In the 

statistical categories it’s easier asking what he hasn’t done. He has 44 total 

tackles, 4 sacks, 1 pass deflection, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble. 

Unlike Cox, Burney is often seen in coverage and deployed all over the 

field because of such. 

BRENTON COX (LB) - This one’s a must see. A Georgia native and 

former Bulldog turned Gator is now a leader on the rival team and has put 

up a number of sacks and tackles playing at the defensive end position. 

He’s only found his way to the quarterback twice this season, but Coach 

Smart has said in the past it’s common to gameplan around sacks. If 

anyone’s gonna put his hands on Bennett, it’ll be Cox.

JASON MARSHALL JR (CB) - Only a sophomore, Jason Marshall 

has already amounted three pass deflections, and while that may not 

seem like a lot, to put into perspective Georgia’s Kelee Ringo only has two 

this season. Regarding the cornerback position, the less stats the better. 

It just shows he’s not being targeted because more likely than not he’s 

getting the job done in coverage. Marshall has earned a starting spot over 

an entire roster of SEC corners as just a second year. 


A cornerstone of the Gators 2006 and 2007 national 

championship teams, Al Horford has enjoyed a stellar 

NBA career, five times an NBA All-Star, four times 

with the Atlanta Hawks. 

One of the great players in Florida history, three time 

Pro Bowler Wilber Marshall was a stalwart on a pair of 

Super Bowl title-winning teams - the 1985 Bears and 

Washington in 1991. 

Steve Spurrier is the greatest Gator, winning the 

Heisman Trophy in 1966 and then coaching Florida to 

six SEC championships and the 1996 national title in 

his 12 years at the helm.

FOR A DAWGS VICTORY

TURNOVERS- In the first three games of the season, Georgia had zero turnovers and 

outscored Oregon, South Carolina by a cumulative score of 130-10. In a clunky win over 

Kent State, and a narrow victory at Missouri, turnovers plagued the Bulldogs. There was 

one against Auburn and none versus Vanderbilt. Protecting the football is essential. But Kirby 

Smart would love to see his defense - and special teams - create some turnovers. Remember 

how tight last year’s game was? Florida unwisely ran an interception out of the end zone. Then 

came a fumble that led to a Georgia touchdown, an interception that set up a Bulldogs TD and 

Nakobe Dean’s epic Pick Six that proved to be the knockout blow. All of that with under three 

minutes to go in the first half. There’s always energy and noise with the crowd split in half. 

Turnovers in Jacksonville seem to “just mean more.” 

CORRAL RICHARDSON - Anthony Richardson is a big play-maker for the Gators at 

quarterback. He has a huge arm and is an extremely dangerous runner. When Richardson 

2gets loose, the Gators offense is downright lethal. There’s skill and speed all around him, plus 

a tough and physical offensive line. Keeping containment, not over- pursuing, and not rushing past 

Richardson are essential to success. He’s a load, and no fun to tackle running downhill. 

WIN THE RUN GAME - In the history of this rivalry, along with turnovers, the most 

telling factor in who wins this legendary, emotional rivalry is the run game. The team that 

3runs the ball better, in general, wins. Run it better and win the turnover battle, that’s a solid 

recipe for victory. Daijun Edwards, Kenny McIntosh and Branson Robinson are tough and physical. 

That Bulldogs offensive line has to give them a little bit of space. Georgia also must come up with, 

as Smart says, “creative ways to run the football.” And get the ball to #19 Brock Bowers. 

STRIKE DOWNFIELD - The Florida secondary is athletic. Always is. The Gators 

will certainly try multiple looks to try and create pressure against the Georgia passing 

4game. Stetson Bennett IV is hopeful of having his healthiest collection of pass-catchers 

since the season-opening victory over Oregon. When the plays are there, it’s vital to strike. 

Georgia will have to run it strong, and hit through the air. It’s a good bet that Florida will stack 

the front and force the Bulldogs to lead with the passing game. 

CONQUER THE KICKING GAME - The winds blow funny in Jacksonville. They 

come whipping in off the St. Johns River and swirl through the old Gator Bowl. A lot 

5of excellent kickers have had nightmare afternoons and early evenings in Jacksonville. 

Making the kicks you’re “supposed” to make is essential. Field position with punting and a 

burst from the return game can make the difference. Then of course there is the potential 

of the double, a turnover in the return game. Watch the fake and the surprise onsides kick 

Dawgs! It’s a good bet, especially with the open week, the Gators will try something tricky to 

try and steal a possession.

DAWG BONES OFFENSE - GEORGIA 

Georgia’s offense has been every bit as potent as expected before the 

season began. The Dawgs are averaging 41.7 PPG (#10 nationally), 527 YPG 

(#4 nationally), 330 passing YPG (#10 nationally), and 197 rushing YPG (#30 

nationally). Georgia got back to running the ball effectively the last couple of 

weeks and if the Dawgs can keep teams honest by hitting some deep shots, 

they should continue to roll up points. Florida’s running game has been the 

offenses only bright spot, producing an average of 214 YPG (#17 nationally). 

Florida ranks 91st nationally in passing YPG and ranks 101st nationally in 

PPG. Anthony Richardson is only completing a less-than-pedestrian 57% of 

his passes and has more interceptions (7) than TD passes (6).

The Dawgs’ defense may be the best in the country. After seven games, 

the Dawgs are only giving up 9.1 PPG (#2 nationally), 247 YPG (#3 

nationally), 164 passing YPG (#8 nationally), and 83 rushing YPG (#5 

nationally). The Dawgs have accomplished this with their All-American 

DL, Jalen Carter, who has played little more than one game. Carter 

should be back for the Florida game. The Gators rank 106th in total 

defense giving up nearly 430 YPG. Florida is statistically weak against 

the run and pass. Florida ranks 87th in the country against the pass and 

111th against the run. Unlike Georgia, Florida does not have great depth 

defensively and they tend to wear down as the game progresses. 

DAWG BONES SPECIAL TEAMS – GEORGIA 

Jack Podlesny has been superb for Georgia this year, making 14/16 of his field 

goal attempts. Jack Pod has a career 83 percent average converting field goals, 

which bests Rodrigo Blankenship’s career field goal percentage of 82.5. Punter 

Brett Thorson has also been steady for the Dawgs. Thorson has not been 

called on much this year but is averaging a respectable 43 yards a punt and 

has been adept at pinning teams inside the 20. Adam Mihalek, Florida’s kicker, 

is only converting on 56 percent of his field goals, but does have a long of 50 

yards. Georgia is excellent in kick coverage – primarily using starters on most 

coverage units – while Florida relies more on back-ups. 

DAWG BONES COACHING – GEORGIA 

This year is not off to the start many Florida fans hoped for after the 

Gators beat Utah to open the season. Napier should be credited 

for transitioning the offense to a more run-focused approach after 

Richardson’s early season troubles airing it out. Florida’s defense has 

underperformed despite having some NFL talent. In contrast, Kirby 

Smart is at the pinnacle of the college coaching fraternity. Coming off 

a national championship and a new 10-year contract making him one 

of the highest paid coaches in the nation, Smart shows no signs of 

complacency. In fact, many predicted a drop off defensively this year 

after the Dawgs lost 15 players to the NFL draft, but statistically this 

year’s defense is on par with last year’s. Recruiting is also rolling, as usual. 

DAWG BONES OVERALL – GEORGIA 

Georgia should be favored by double digits against the Gators. Both teams 

will be coming off bye weeks, so expect a few new wrinkles from each 

team. As with any heated rivalry game, the favorite does not always win. 

Unless the Dawgs turn the ball over and fail to play inspired football, the 

Dawgs should be 8-0 heading into a Game Day weekend in the Classic City 

against Tennessee.

knows Jacksonville. Frank is the voice of the 

Jacksonville Jaguars, an esteemed talk show 

host, and one of the most respected football 

minds and broadcasters in the business. I’m 

often asked who I’d love to regularly do a 

show with, Frank is at the top of the list. We

Jim McElwain. The belief among 

most now is that you have to build 

the recruiting mechanism similar 

to the ones that Nick Saban built 

at Alabama and that Kirby has 

going at Georgia. No telling if that 

will happen, but his background 

suggests it might. Fans are very 

excited about that possibility. His

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON 

THIS FLORIDA TEAM? 

The Gators are a middle of the pack 

SEC team. They really struggle on 

defense — one of the worst Gator 

defenses in my lifetime — and the 

offense is hot and cold, usually 

based on how well Anthony 

Richardson is playing. They are 4-3, 

but in fairness, the three teams that 

have beaten them are Tennessee, 

Kentucky and surging LSU. But it’s 

really just an average team. 

WHAT DOES FLORIDA 

NEED TO DO TO WIN?

most of the Spurrier years, I really 

didn’t think there was much chance 

Georgia could ever win. They all 

felt like mismatches going in, at 

least to me. This is the same, just 

in Georgia’s favor. I can’t imagine, 

even if everything goes as well 

as possible for Florida, that the 

Gators could win. Georgia is so 

much better. Lots of really good 

players, really well-coached. They 

are better than the three teams 

that beat Florida already. But to 

your question — the Gators need 

Richardson to play his best game. 

They need him to run more than 

he has, to create havoc outside the 

pocket. He is an inconsistent passer, 

but he is an electric athlete. He has 

to be amazing in this game. They 

need to convert third downs and 

stay on the field and keep a really 

struggling defense off the field. And 

they probably need to get a few 

takeaways. I think they have to win 

the turnover battle by at least three 

to even have a chance. It’s not likely. 

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON 

GEORGIA? 

I think the Dawgs are terrific. 

Talented, tough, smart, wellcoached. 

Probably asleep at the 

wheel a bit against Missouri, but 

still found a way to win. Georgia 

might be the best program in 

America right now — at least on par 

with Alabama and Ohio State — the 

only other ones in the conversation. 

Kirby has really recruited at an elite 

level and they are coaching that 

way as well. Stetson Bennett has 

seen about all there is to see in 

college football and can win with 

his arm and his legs. Nobody would 

be surprised if they repeat. 

MAKE THE CASE FOR 

JACKSONVILLE TO KEEP 

THE GAME. 

I can’t imagine that the game would 

ever leave. I know Kirby believes 

it is a recruiting disadvantage 

to lose that recruiting weekend 

every other year, but now that the 

home team can host recruits, that 

should alleviate that. The game 

is financially beneficial to both 

schools, more than playing at home 

would be. In addition, both schools 

get 40,000 seats every year. And I’d 

hate to be the one who told those 

rich Georgia boosters on Sea Island 

and elsewhere in South Georgia 

that they are losing their game. 

Beyond that, one of the things that 

separates college football from 

every other sport is its wonderful 

traditions. Marching bands and 

cheerleaders and student sections 

and wonderful neutral site games. 

Selfishly, I know how critically 

important it is to our city. I hope like 

crazy our city has it forever. 

COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAS 

UNDERGONE ENORMOUS 

CHANGE THESE PAST COUPLE 

OF YEARS, WHAT WOULD 

YOU LIKE TO SEE NEXT? 

The 12-team playoff. We’re headed 

there by 2026 at the latest, but it 

appears there is real momentum 

to get it done by 2024. We need 

more teams in the hunt, more 

fan bases excited about being 

in a winner-take-all tournament. 

I’m very excited about that. The 

other big talkers are conference 

expansion and NIL, and I know both 

topics get major headlines, but 

I’d be disingenuous if I said I have 

strong opinions about either. I like 

players getting theirs, so I’m totally 

ok with NIL, although I hope we 

can find some consistency or how 

it is applied from state to state. As 

for conference expansion, I’m fine 

with exactly where it’s headed. The 

best conferences are going to keep 

adding the best teams that aren’t 

already there. Just how it is. Which 

is fine with me. 

WHAT IS YOUR SCORE 

PREDICTION? 

Georgia 41, Florida 24. There is a 

gulf between these two teams right 

now. I can’t imagine it being much 

closer than that.

necessary and appreciated business, Richards Furriers. It has 

been a local Augusta institution since 1963. Originally known as 

Cullum’s Department Store, ladies would have a fur coat custom 

designed. It is best for the fur to be stored at proper temperatures 

and humidity levels in the warmer months, April- October. We 

continue this service to customers locally and throughout the 

Southeast in our 2000 square foot refrigerated low humidity 

vault. In addition we help customers redesign their fur pieces or 

simply refresh them with a new lining or a monogram.

Ingredients: 

2 Sticks Butter (Soft- not melted) 

3T Poppy Seeds 

1t Worcestershire sauce 

3T yellow mustard 

1 small onion, finely chopped 

3 packs Sunbeam dinner rolls 

1 lb thinly sliced ham 

3/4 pound thinly sliced Swiss cheese 

Directions: 

Cream first five ingredients. Cut rolls 

top and bottom. Spread on both 

parts. Layer with ham and cheese. 

Wrap in aluminum foil. Bake 350 for 

15 minutes or until hot.

Bulldawg Illustrated continues its series, featuring long-time UGA personalities of the Fourth Estate. There are many who are published authors along with 

network television superstars. Our sixth installment spotlights former Georgia Bulldogs’ play-by-play announcer, Ed Thilenius, who like so many media stars 

got his start in a local newsroom (Athens Banner-Herald). 

Before Scott Howard, an underappreciated announcer who 

underscores the fundamentals of radio play by play, there was 

Larry Munson; before Munson there was Ed Thilenius who had, 

at one time, a similar cult following as Munson did. 

Thilenius’ teams, unfortunately, did not have the good fortune of 

winning like those of Munson era. Larry’s broadcasting career was linked 

with the accomplished coaching of Vince Dooley. 

Like the coach of his era, Wallace Butts, Thilenius did enjoy a late 

championship run in the 50s when the Bulldogs won the SEC title in 1959 

and subsequently defeated Missouri in the Orange Bowl 14-0. 

Latter day Bulldog fans don’t remember Thilenius, although in the UGA 

archives are tapes of his play-by-play accounts including the broadcast of 

the 1957 Tech game when Georgia broke the drought by defeating Tech on 

Grant Field, 7-0, Theron Sapp scoring the only touchdown of the game. 

Before his dalliance into radio, which segued into a permanent gig, 

Thilenius was a reporter with the Athens Banner-Herald. There was an 

incident on campus in the late 40s having to do with a prominent dean 

being shot by his estranged wife. Thilenuis covered the story and when 

he showed up in the dean’s hospital room, he was greeted with, “Hello 

Ed, I see the press is here.” 

With a perfect bass voice for radio, Thilenius, who sounded as though 

he might have swallowed Walter Conkrite, moved into full time status 

with WRFC, covering sports and news for the local station, as he had 

done for the Banner-Herald; and calling Bulldog football, basketball, and 

baseball games along with the Friday night games of Athens High. A 

busy man, indeed. 

By the time of the 1965 football season, in which he called the flea 

flicker game which upset defending national champion Alabama, 

Thilenius had moved to WAGA TV in Atlanta, becoming the city’s first full 

time TV sports director. In 1966, the Falcons joined the National Football 

League, and Thilenius became the announcer for the NFL franchise. 

At the time, CBS arranged for two announcers to call each game. If the 

Falcons, for example, were playing Green Bay, stations in the Southeast 

got the broadcast of Thilenius, while the Midwest stations heard the 

game called by Ray Scott. 

The next season, CBS decided that one announcer crew was sufficient 

and let half of the announcers and crews go. Thilenius did not make 

the cut. He was devastated. Falcon owner, Rankin Smith, did his best to 

get CBS for find a spot for Thilenius, but to no avail. Ed then wanted his 

old Georgia job back but Joel Eaves, athletic director had already hired 

Munson and would not consider a change. Ed drove over to Athens to 

meet me and ask how he could present his case, but I had to tell him I 

was not in a position to help him. 

In 1964, I recall, Bobby Dodd then AD at Tech, made an offer to Thilenius 

to become the Yellow Jacket announcer. It ended up with Ed getting 

a raise out of the negotiations, which greatly irritated Eaves. was not 

sympathetic with Thilenius’ desire to return to the Bulldog booth. 

Interestingly, a few years later, Munson and Thilenius became 

acquainted. One day, I got a call from Munson saying that it would be 

nice to have Thilenius back on the broadcast doing color. 

That would have gone over splendidly in some circles, but I had to tell 

Munson that I didn’t think it would be a good idea. While I was not sure 

what would come of a discussion with the incumbent power brokers at the 

moment, namely Coach Eaves, I was fearful that Thilenius in that position 

might cause a great controversy. Some fans, with Munson’s popularity in its 

infancy, might clamor to have Thilenius back doing play-by-play. 

I always thought that it was big of Munson to even consider the 

arrangement, but I felt that such a move might end up in debilitating 

controversy. 

The last survivor of the Thilenius broadcast crew, John Withers worked 

not only the Georgia broadcasts but the Falcon broadcasts of 1966, 

remembers Thilenius as being “a perfectionist.” 

“I enjoyed working with him. He would always try to compliment our 

crew for the job we did. He would make sure that he mentioned our 

names which gave us great status around campus and the host hotel 

when we were on the road. I thought he was a great announcer.” 

Ole timers have great recall of Thilenius’ broadcasts. “Imagine your radio 

dial as a football field, the lefts and rights are the same.” Then he would 

describe the huddle of quarterback Fran Tarkenton. “Tarkenton talks to 

his two rows or five.” 

His voice was so authoritative. No sports announcer ever sounded 

better on radio.

My mother, Connie Cannon, and my father, Bobby Cannon.

father, and productive member of society. 

My wife of 11 years and girlfriend of 19 years, Cassandra Cannon 

class of ’08. She is an incredible mother to our three, soon to be 

four children, and my best friend and confidant. After graduating 

from UGA in ’08 with a degree in Biology and Psychology and 

acceptance into Mercer Medical School, Cassandra took a 

leap of faith and started a women’s apparel company called 

Lake Pajamas with her friend and business partner, Anne Read 

Latimore. They’ve gone from selling their pajamas out of one 

store in downtown Savannah to a large e-commerce business 

with their own retail locations in Atlanta and Charleston. All of 

this while raising three children and pregnant with a fourth. She 

transcends time and space.

LORAN SMITH BOOK TAKES DAWG FANS 

FROM PROGRAM’S BEGINNING TO THE COVETED 2021 

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Loran Smith very seldom misses attending the Major golf 

tournaments … the Masters, U.S. Open, PGA and the British Open. 

But this July the University of Georgia broadcasting legend, 

historian and author didn’t make the British Open tournament in 

St. Andrews, Scotland due to having to put the finishing touches 

on his new book, “Return to Glory.” 

And this latest creation by Smith is one the Bulldog Nation 

should relish as it not only relives the 2021 Bulldogs’ run to the 

program’s first National Championship since 1980 but, also, takes 

the reader through UGA football history 

from the day the Bulldogs first took the 

field in 1892 under Dr. Charles Herty. 

Released in August by Whitman 

Publishing, LLC, Smith’s 160-page book 

is one in a long line of publications 

that Loran has written on all things 

concerning Georgia football. 

“I guess there’s about 14 or 15 I’ve 

written,” said Smith. “Some of those are 

co-authored, one with Vince (Dooley) 

and ‘Glory, Glory’ with Lewis Grizzard. 

One of those was on the history of 

the Orange Bowl and another was 

on Athens, my hometown. I did the 

history of the Orange Bowl for their 

50th anniversary in 1980. Then I wrote 

five books on the Masters…those are 

not included in the stats I just gave you; 

those are sort of annuals. 

“On this book, it has some old history 

in there but I wrote the manuscript 

for the new part in January,” he said. 

“With the Georgia history in there, I was 

able to get it done before we won the 

championship. So, it’s retracing old ground but the thing about 

that first-ever Georgia game on Herty Field is a tackle on Georgia’s 

first team told John Stegeman, our preeminent historian, that we 

beat Mercer by that 50-0 score. But the scorekeeper got it wrong 

because he missed two scores when he went across the street to 

buy some booze. So, I’ve always maintained that not only was it 

our first game but also our first tailgate party! 

“The big thing about this book, with words and photography, 

it touches the latest national championship. So that should 

be the appeal of the book, that we’re celebrating a national 

championship. And ‘Return to Glory’ is a pretty good description 

of the story of the 2021 season and ’21 team.” 

Smith, now 84 and going strong, said Georgia’s three national 

championship teams of 1942, 1980 and 2021 all possessed 

similar traits, which allowed those Bulldogs to overcome all odds 

enroute to the most prestigious trophy in college football. He 

even included a non-national title team at Georgia, the 1959 SEC 

champions, in the discussion. 

“The big thing is, like all championship teams, there was a 

togetherness, a brotherhood,” said Smith. “Like in 1959, we didn’t 

win the (national) championship but that was a classic example 

of the benefit of good timing and also of the togetherness that 

team had. Dave Lloyd was a disruptive guy who left the team 

and Coach (Wally) Butts and the coaches were lamenting the 

loss. But the players were overjoyed because he had such a 

disruptive factor. And coinciding with 

that, Coach J.B. Whitworth had the same 

effect on the players that Erk Russell 

had. It was almost identical; now he 

didn’t butt heads or that kind of thing 

but the brotherhood of that team was 

unbeatable. So was that of the 1942 

team. Now I say that having not been 

here then but the factors were the same. 

Like Georgia’s three national 

championship teams, Smith said the 

SEC champion 1959 Bulldogs – who lost 

only to South Carolina and scored an 

Orange Bowl victory over Missouri – had 

great leadership. 

“Captain of the 1959 team was 

Don Soberdash and Jimmy Vickers 

was alternate captain and then Fran 

Tarkenton was captain and Pat Dye was 

alternate captain in 1960,” Smith noted. 

“Tarkenton was the central figure in 

rallying the troops, rallying the players. 

And they liked him very much and 

he made a big difference. And I think 

with Coach Whitworth providing the 

inspiration … by that time Coach Butts 

had some lean years and he had settled into a cynical stance 

which came off as negative, and Coach Whitworth balanced the 

emotions. He made football fun, made everybody believe in it 

and made everybody feel good. 

“Like I said, I wasn’t here for the 1942 team but I just heard all 

what they said about it … like Racehorse Davis, (Frank) Sinkwich, 

(Charley) Trippi, I knew all those guys. And Van Davis.” 

Smith said Dooley’s 1980 champions literally overcame all odds, 

starting the season ranked 16th in the AP poll and hurdling one 

obstacle after another enroute to a 12-0 record and the national 

championship win over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. 

“Of course, in 1980 Georgia was not figured to be the best by 

any prognosticators but, boy, they just had that great leadership,” 

said Smith. “Herschel was the missing piece and he just really fit 

in. He had the greatest attitude, was selfless and was really team 


oriented. It was just a Cinderella year. Everybody felt good and everybody worked. 

“You could see the resemblance with the 2021 team,” Loran said. “Erk came out with the 

“Big Team, Little Me” so from the beginning everybody, led by (captain) Frank Ross, took 

the attitude that they were going to find some way to win – they didn’t care who had the 

glory. Everybody had to run wind sprints and Herschel would be first in line. Both the 1980 

and 2021 teams were very similar in that they had all the ingredients of selflessness.” 

However, unlike most of the 2021 team’s 14-1 season, Dooley’s 1980 Bulldogs had to win 

a number of close games to remain unbeaten. “They just found a way to win,” said Smith, 

“and that was another of Erk’s big slogans…’One More Time.’ I remember him saying it in 

New Orleans when we knew Notre Dame was going to be a tough, tough opponent.” 

Smith said Kirby Smart’s 2021 Bulldogs, like the 1942 and 1980 national champs before 

them, just had a brotherhood all across the board. 

“Like the great defense, the offense had it, too,” he said. “And I think the beauty of that 

team was you had that impregnable defense, except in the SEC Championship Game. 

You know Stetson Bennett, if there’s ever been a rags-to-riches story …. It was against all 

odds and he was perfect for Georgia’s play-action offense. He was just a perfect fit; he’s 

got such quick feet and touch on the ball and he’s very smart, a very heady player. People 

that remember Eddie Stanky (former MLB second baseman, manager), he was that kind of 

player. He might not in the flesh be the best talent but he was hard to beat.” 

Smith admitted that ‘Return to Glory’ was somewhat of a challenge to get finished on time. 

“The challenge with this book was we had so many players and coaches that were 

significant in the story so I did little vignettes and sidebars and there’s close to 50 of those,” 

he said. “And then the big thing was trying to get Kirby’s insights. You know after the game 

he got to bed about 4 a.m., something like that he told me. And then he’s up for the press 

conference and then he flew home. So, he didn’t sleep in his own bed until the second 

night. So, Monday night was Indianapolis, Tuesday night was Athens and then Wednesday 

morning, it was business as usual he had gone back to work. And he starts flying on that 

helicopter, recruiting then. Then the meetings he had to attend. He just didn’t have time 

but he did help me at the strategic points. I wanted more of his insights into the thing and 

that’s what I kept badgering him about. And, we got that done! 

“But, really, I got this Return to Glory done relatively quickly because I had to start doing 

the interviewing with the players and coaches on a deferred basis,” said Smith. “I couldn’t 

do Kirby and the coaches until they got through recruiting so it was February. So, I got a 

late start but that gave me a chance to write the transcript in January.” 

Smart has the foreword in Smith’s new book, praising the support of the Bulldog Nation 

and pointing out how the Georgia fan base was most instrumental in the Bulldogs’ run to 

the national championship.

football’s greatest rivalries takes 

place on the banks of the St. John’s 

River in Jacksonville, Florida. Yes, ladies 

and gentlemen it is the World’s Largest

stadium split right down the middle with

and blue on the other; it is … drumroll 

please… Georgia-Florida. 

As the men who represent this great 

institution suit up to take on the Gators of 

Gainesville, millions will be watching, but 

only a few will be honored on the field. 

One of the men being recognized prior 

to the game will be University of Georgia 

legend and Damn Good Dawg John Little, 

the roverback of the mid-1980s who 

secured his spot in the 2022 class of the 

Georgia/Florida Hall of Fame. 

Little’s resumé, however, doesn’t end 

with the Georgia/Florida Hall of Fame. 

Little was inducted as an Southeastern 

Conference Football Legend in 2014 as 

well as earning All-SEC, Academic All-SEC 

and All-American honors in 1985 and ‘86. 

For the ‘86 season, Little was named a team 

captain, and now, Little is a successful 

businessman with Georgia Crown 

Distributing Co. as their Vice President of 

Pricing and Procurement. With a name like 

Little, he sure is a big deal. 

The great success story of Little started 

in the one and only Panama City Beach, 

Florida, at Mosley High School. After a 

coaching change in Little’s freshman 

year, the Dolphins went from a two-win 

maximum program to a 5-5 sophomore 

season, 10-1 in his junior year and 13-1 

with a loss in the state title his last season. 

Little’s contribution to the team did not 

go unnoticed by the Dawgs north of the 

Georgia/Florida line as Coach Ray Goff 

ventured down to Mosley and began 

recruiting Little. Though he wasn’t a highlytouted 

recruit, Goff and Georgia wanted 

Little on the roster. 

“[Goff] was the first coach, first school 

to recruit me,” Little said. “It was really the 

only school that I felt wanted me, so my 

decision was pretty easy. Then, once I got 

to Athens on my visit, I was like, ‘Yep, I 

know where I’m going.’” 

At Georgia, Little had the burden and 

responsibility of filling the great Terry 

Hoage’s shoes at roverback. Little said he 

was compared to him often, but they had 

different styles of play. Nonetheless, Hoage 

set the bar high at that position and Little 

said he did everything in his power to 

remotely compare to the all-time legend. 

Come 1986, although Little had already 

proven himself as one of the best 

defensive backs in Georgia history, he 

made a statement to be an all-timer like 

Hoage, hauling in two picks at Clemson in 

the fourth quarter. 

“It was a huge rivalry game then,” Little 

said. “They were one of the most talented 

teams in America at the time, and that 

game was so close. So securing those 

two picks stands out to me as my favorite 

moment at Georgia.” 

Little’s historic career set records as he 

ranks seventh all-time in career tackles 

with 381, the most by any defensive back 

in school history. While Little prepares to 

accept the honor of the Georgia-Florida 

Hall of Fame thanks to an illustrious career 

and standout performances in his Georgia- 

Florida games, he found out about the 

recognition in a rather unconventional 

way. 

“Claude Felton [Loran Smith Senior 

Associate Athletic Director of Sports 

Communication] emailed me, and it 

looked like a spam email to me,” Little said. 

“I didn’t respond. He emailed me again 

the next day and was like ‘You need to call 

me.’ I called him and he told me. Thank 

goodness, because this is a pretty cool 

honor.” 

Little will be attending the Georgia/ 

Florida game to accept the recognition 

alongside future College Football Hall of 

Famer and current Pro Football Hall of 

Famer Champ Bailey, another defensive 

back at UGA. 

As mentioned earlier, this is not Little’s 

first recognition for his performance on the 

field. In 2014, when he was selected to the 

SEC Legends, he and his wife attended the 

event. The week of the SEC Championship, 

the club holds a dinner and announces 

each new inductee of that year’s class, 

and alongside all the other greats of the 

SEC, each inductee’s college highlights 

are shown. In Little’s class was legendary 

Auburn running back Cadillac Williams. 

“My wife went to Auburn,” Little said. “Her 

highlight of the night was she got to meet 

Cadillac Williams, but for me, it was so neat 

to be with those guys, sit next to them and 

be honored with them.” 

The Panama City native left his mark in 

Athens and on the gridiron as well, but 

Athens and this University left its mark on 

Little too. 

“It is still, 40 years later, the greatest 

college experience you can possibly have,” 

Little said. “The city embraces all of the 

sports teams. The students get involved 

and it makes the great atmosphere that 

we know and love. When I was there, the 

team lived in McWhorter Hall all together, 

and that made for some of the best times 

in my life. I would never have thought I 

could have enjoyed a college experience 

that much.” 

As the Georgia/Florida Hall of Fame gets 

ready to induct Little, the Georgia people 

will say cheers to John Little at the World’s 

Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

GEORGIA - 55, VANDERBILT - 0 

A case of the flu kept me off the field for the Vanderbilt 

game. The fact that I was not there and how UGA 

dismantled Vandy leaves little for me to analyze. Sure there 

were mistakes and tackling was an issue at times, but when 

your team waxes a conference opponent 55-0, it has been 

a good day. 

I had almost forgotten how nice it is to have replays 

served up after every play, but no matter how great your 

entertainment system, the in-stadium experience remains 

unchallenged. Of course, my usual vantage point is the 

sideline, providing glimpses and sounds of the game that 

TV can never capture. 

Vandy has trouble fielding a competitive SEC team, 

but that does not mean its players do not play hard. 

They kept coming at the Dawgs on both sides of the ball 

until they finally ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. The 

Commodores do not have the talent to compete with the 

Georgias of the world, but they never quit. Getting beat is 

not the same as giving up. 

Next up is Florida, who lost to LSU two Saturdays ago, 

but the Gators will be ready for Georgia. They will be 

hyped and full of themselves, but it will not help. Florida 

is a few recruiting classes away from being competitive 

with the SEC’s top teams. That is not to say that Georgia is 

invincible, but if both teams play close to their potential, 

Georgia wins going away. 

After Tennessee’s massive win over Bama, expect to 

see the upstart Vols roll into Athens a week after Florida 

with a legion of orange-clad fans, sending ticket prices 

through the roof. The atmosphere will be electric. With 

national hype and championship implications, Georgia vs. 

Tennessee is the matchup that fans deserve. 

These are the games that UGA hired Kirby to win. 

Tennessee follows Florida, then Mississippi State and 

Kentucky. It is going to be a fun run, but, for now, all 

eyes and focus must remain on the Cocktail Party in 

Jacksonville.

A look back at what decided the game 

between Georgia and Vanderbilt. 

The Georgia Bulldogs’ game against 

Vanderbilt seemed as if it was just another 

day in the office for Kirby Smart and his 

team. Nothing too crazy, nothing too wild, 

just another notch in the win column for 

55-0 

the Dawgs. Something to note was the 

consistent and balanced offense. Stetson 

Bennett went 24 for 30 for two touchdowns 

and 289 yards only playing through three 

quarters. When Carson Beck came in, there 

was little dropoff. The second-string signal 

caller also had two touchdowns going 8 

of 11 for 98 yards. The quarterback play is 

definitely a good sign for this team heading 

to Jacksonville on Saturday,, especially 

after it feels like something’s been missing 

these past couple weeks. The defense also 

did its job against a lackluster Vanderbilt 

team. At Georgia, shutouts are almost taken 

for granted, but it’s just the standard that 

they’ve set for themselves. The Georgia 

Bulldogs are rolling, and here are some 

numbers that help explain how they’re 

doing it.

FRESHMAN OFFENSIVE PLAYER 

Dillon Bell - The freshman receiver from Houston, Texas that 

stands 6-1, 210-pound had a great day against Vanderbilt. His 

season totals are 13 catches for 131 yards, but against the ’Dores 

Dillon had five receptions for 54 yards and a TD. Due to injuries, 

receiving might be the weakest position on the Georgia offense at 

this point in the season. However with the freshman Bell stepping 

up and giving Stetson another target that he can count on, that 

will be key going down the homestretch. When you look around 

the offense, a lot of freshmen are playing and this go-round Dillon 

Bell is my offensive freshman player of the game. 

FRESHMAN DEFENSIVE PLAYER 

Jalon Walker - My defensive player of the game versus 

Vanderbilt is a young freshman who is making a mark in the 

middle of a Tenacious D. Walker is a 6-2, 225-pound freshman 

out of Salisbury, North Carolina. He had a solid game against the 

Commodores with four tackles and two solo tackles. The freshman 

linebacker is making a name for himself in the middle of a defense 

that has housed two Butkus Award winners in recent years. His 

play as a freshman stands out at one of the toughest positions on 

any defense. He’s got his feet wet through seven games and now 

will step into the meat of the SEC schedule where his physical 

presence will be greatly appreciated by the Bulldog Nation. His 

performance through seven games and especially against the 

Commodores makes him my freshman Bulldog defensive player of 

the game. 

FRESHMAN SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER 

Brett Thorson - Once again I’m going down under and checking 

the box. I’m picking the thunder from down under. Brett Thorson, 

though he didn’t play a lot, was effective on his one punt for 

36 yards down the inside the 20. Brett has done exceptionally 

well filling in for one of the best punters in Georgia history, Jake 

Camarda, and doing a very effective job for the Bulldogs. He needs 

to stay sharp during this off week because his foot will play a key 

role in every game from here on out on the Bulldogs march for a 

second straight national championship. You cannot put too much 

value on putting a team inside their 20 with an aggressive bulldog 

defense coming on the field. The better Brett performs the better 

start our defense has to do what they do best, dominate opposing 

offenses. I know one thing is for sure – there is a big Bulldog Club 

down in Australia and it’s growing every day.

We head into the final week of October, as the season flies by again, with 

some enormous matchups. The unbeatens are dwindling each week as 

opposing teams look to right their own ship with massive upsets over the 

top-ranked teams. 

1. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs were off this past 

weekend to recharge the batteries for the annual 

border battle against Florida, which was also off, in 

Jacksonville. Georgia is hopeful of getting some key injured 

players back, while trying to make it 8-0. 

2. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes domination 

continued with a 54-10 demolition of offensively 

challenged Iowa. There is a lot of momentum for Ohio 

State, as Ryan Day’s crew sets its sights on Penn State in State 

College. This team has the goods to make a run. 

3. TENNESSEE - There was no letdown or lookahead 

for the Volunteers against Ut-Martin in a 65-24 

win. This offense is tremendous and Hendon Hooker 

is rightfully a Heisman front-runner. Kentucky comes calling 

Saturday night for what should be a dandy. 

4. CLEMSON - The Tigers are undefeated, and 

survived a big time upset push from Syracuse to win 

27-21 at Death Valley. There’s an open date and then 

Clemson heads to Notre Dame for a big showdown in South Bend. 

5. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide defense flexed its 

muscles and Alabama cruised past Mississippi State 30- 

6. Bama is off this week, and then it’s LSU in a big battle 

against the big rivals in Baton Rouge. Alabama is again right 

square in the middle of it all. 

6. MICHIGAN - These last two seasons have been 

tremendous for the Wolverines. The defending Big Ten 

champions are 7-0 and coming off an open date for a 

big one against Michigan State in Ann Arbor. Jim Harbaugh has a 

very good Big Ten running attack. 

7. OREGON - Since getting blown away by Georgia 49-3 

in the season opener, Dan Lanning’s Ducks have gotten to 

work and taken care of business. A 45-30 win over UCLA 

this past Saturday is the highlight. The Ducks go to Cal Saturday. 

8. TCU - What a tremendous season for the Horned 

Frogs, who improved to 7-0 with a nice comeback 

win over Kansas State in Fort Worth. Sonny Dykes has 

gotten the Gary Patterson great days in Cowtown right back. 

Could be tricky Saturday at West Virginia. 

9. USC - The Trojans had an open date to stew on a 

43-42 heartbreaking loss to Utah. Now Southern Cal 

can refocus and turn their sights to Arizona in Tucson. 

USC will be heavily favored in its next three before UCLA and the 

Fighting Irish. 

10. OLE MISS - The Rebels suffered their first 

loss of the season, going down to LSU 45-20 this 

past Saturday. This tough schedule in the SEC West 

continues this weekend against Texas A&M in College 

Station. A win is a must for the Rebels Atlanta aspirations. 

11. OKLAHOMA STATE - The Cowboys pulled 

out a thrilling 41-34 win over Texas in Stillwater to the 

delight of the Oklahoma State faithful. Now it is off to 

the Little Apple to play Kansas State. The Pokes are almost always 

right in the mix under Mike Gundy’s watch. 

12. WAKE FOREST - The Demon Deacons had a 

tremendous season last year and have just one loss 

this season, in overtime, to Clemson. Wake Forest 

dusted Boston College 43-15 this past weekend. The Deacons 

head to Louisville Saturday. 

13. UCLA - The Bruins got worked over by Oregon in 

Eugene. But it was just the first loss for Chip Kelly’s team. 

The PAC `12 is in its best playoff positioning in several 

years. UCLA hosts Stanford Saturday, and that will be physical. 

14. PENN STATE - The Nittany Lions bounced back 

from a blowout loss to Michigan with an impressive 

45-17 victory over Minnesota. Penn State will go allin 

this week at home with Ohio State coming to town, but the 

Buckeyes have a big talent edge. 

15. LSU - The Fightin’ Tigers fell behind Ole Miss 

17-3 in the first half in Baton Rouge. Then LSU put it 

all together and blew past the Rebels 45-20 with a 

dominating second half performance. The Tigers are off Saturday, 

then it’s Bama in Red Stick.
