a unique destination

Martinique, 

Location 

Located in the heart of the Caribbean archipelago, 

Martinique is one of the Windward islands in the 

Lesser Antilles group. Its eastern coastline borders 

the Atlantic Ocean while its western coast is flanked 

by the Caribbean Sea. The island is 4 350 miles 

away from France, 1 950 miles from New York 

and 275 miles from the closest South American 

coastline. The closest neighboring islands are to the 

north: Dominica, 16 miles away, Guadeloupe, 75 

miles away, and to the south: Saint Lucia, 23 miles 

away. Martinique is equidistant from the coasts 

of Venezuela and Haiti/Dominican Republic (497 

miles). 

Geography 

Martinique has a surface area of 425 square miles. 

At its greatest length and width it measures 50 miles 

and 24 miles, respectively. The rugged mountainous 

landscape to the north is geologically young. Mount 

Pelée is the island’s highest peak, culminating at 

4 500 feet. The north is characterized by dense 

forests, rivers and waterfalls. 

In the center, the Lamentin Plain transitions to the 

south’s gentler and geologically older landscape of 

rolling hills. The southern coast is dotted with many 

picturesque bays and coves. In the southernmost 

part of the island, a savanna of petrified trees is an 

unusual geological sight. 

Climate 

Martinique has a fairly mild climate and the heat is 

never excessive. Thanks to the average temperature 

of 79°, Martinique is the island of the “never-ending 

summer”. 

The trade winds from the east and northeast provide 

a steady breeze that constantly refreshes the air. 

Due to the tropical climate conditions in Martinique, 

the island is lush with vegetation: lavish tropical 

forests, groves, savannas, countless species of 

trees, fruits, plants and flowers, not to mention 

the mangrove forests. All in all, the island is an 

extraordinary garden. 

The wildlife mainly consists of birds, fish and 

shellfish, as well as small lizards called “mabouyas” 

and “anolis”, iguanas and trigonocephalus snakes 

that are only found in Martinique. The “manicou”, 

a type of opossum, is one of the rare mammals to 

be found in the Antilles. The mongoose, however, 

was introduced by humans to control the snake 

population.

Population and culture 

Martinique has a multiethnic population. This 

diversity stems from the cultural mixing of the 

island’s successive inhabitants: Amerindians, 

Europeans, Africans, Indians, Levantines and 

Asians. Approximately one quarter of the population 

resides in the administrative capital, Fort-de- 

France. Martinique is truly a land of tradition and 

culture, with a rich history of crafts and literature 

by renowned authors and famous poets, music and 

dance, lifestyle and gastronomy. 

Numerous religious denominations are present in 

Martinique. 

The official language is French, although everyone 

speaks Creole, a language that is a blend of Old 

French, English, and African languages, as well as 

surviving Amerindian terms. 

Some significant historical dates 

It was in 1502, on his fourth trip to the New World, 

that Christopher Columbus landed in Martinique. 

At the time, the island was inhabited by the Carib 

Indians who had displaced the Arawaks. Both of 

these groups were originally from the Orinoco basin. 

Martinique was known as Madinina, the island of 

flowers. 

Prior to 1493: the Lesser Antilles were inhabited 

by the Arawaks and the Caribs who originally 

came from northwestern South America 

(Orinoco - Venezuela). 

1502: Christopher Columbus landed in Martinique. 

September 1635: Pierre Belain d’Esnambuc landed 

in Martinique and established the Saint-Pierre fort 

right on the spot, the site would later become the 

city of Saint-Pierre that we know today. 

1635 to 1658: a period of chaos between the 

settlers and the native Caribs. The Caribs were 

confined to the windward zone (from Grand-Rivière 

to le François). 

1636: the first African slaves were brought to the 

French Antilles. 

1658: the Caribs were practically exterminated by 

the Europeans. 

1685: Colbert’s “Black Code” was established, a 

text of 60 articles that officially governed the life of 

slaves until 1848. 

1662 to 1848: the height of the plantation economy 

and slavery. 

1848 : slavery was abolished and Indian laborers 

were gradually introduced. 

May 8th 1902: the eruption of Mount Pelée and the 

subsequent destruction of the city of Saint-Pierre, 

the “little Paris of the Caribbean”. 30,000 people 

perished in the disaster. 

March 19th 1946: Martinique acquired the status 

of a French overseas department. 

Today, Martinique is represented by 4 members of 

parliament and 2 senators. 

1982: Martinique acquired French regional status 

following the decentralization law. 

Today, Martinique has a double status; it is both a 

region and a French department.

Entry Requirements 

For short stays (up to three months) no visa is 

required for the following nationalities: 

Nationals who hold a valid ID card or passport 

from a European Union member country or other 

European Economic Area (EEA) countries, Andorra, 

Monaco and Switzerland. 

Mainland France residence permit holders (carte de 

séjour). 

Citizens of the United States and Canada may enter 

without a visa for a stay up to three months, however 

a valid is required. 

All non-residents must have a return flight ticket. 

Please be advised that the French Overseas 

Departments (DOM) are not part of the Schengen 

Area. Schengen visa holders must obtain the DOM 

visa extension in order to enter Martinique.

HOW TO GET AROUND ON THE ISLAND 

Public transportation 

Bus transportation is available in Martinique (both 

urban and inter-city). In Fort-de-France, the majority 

of the bus stops can be found on Boulevard Général 

de Gaulle. 

Shared Taxis can also be found at Pointe Simon. 

They are in service from the early morning until 6 

pm. Commonly known as a “taxico”, this quaint, 

inexpensive means of transport is very popular 

among the locals. Taxicos provide an excellent 

opportunity to experience life in the region and 

interact with the locals. All the towns on the island 

can be reached by taxico.

FORT DE FRANCE, Capital City 

Fort-de-France is the administrative center of 

Martinique, there are many tourist and cultural 

attractions: the bay is among the world’s most

market; the fish market; the Savane; public gardens 

where magnificent tropical species grow; Fort Saint 

Louis - a classified monument; the Atrium cultural 

center; the Saint-Louis cathedral built in 1895; 

and the Schœlcher Library which was originally the 

Canada pavilion at the 1898 World Expo in Paris. It 

was built by Henri Pick, a contemporary of Gustave 

Eiffel.

SAINT-PIERRE, City of Art and History 

Saint-Pierre was the capital of Martinique before its 

destruction during the 1902 Mount Pelée eruption. 

Today, the town is the sous-préfecture (district 

capital) of the Caribbean North district and has been 

officially recognized as a city of Art and History. 

Attractions: the Earth Science Discovery Center 

(Centre de Découverte des Sciences de la Terre), 

the Saint-Pierre theater, the dungeon of the only 

survivor of the eruption (Cyparis), the church at 

the fort, the Depaz estate and distillery known as 

“Habitation la Montagne”. 

With its ruins and remains, Saint-Pierre is like an 

open-air museum, it has been officially recognized 

as the 101st city of Art and History. In 1933, the 

musée Volcanologique (Volcano museum) was 

the first museum to be established in Martinique, 

thanks to the American volcanologist, Frank Perret.

The Botanical North: from Fort de 

France to Le Prêcheur... 

The “Route de la Trace” is a genuine botanical circuit 

through the heart of the tropical forest. The route 

winds its way up to Mount Pelée through stunning 

landscapes dotted with rivers and waterfalls and is 

lined with heliconia flowers and tree ferns. 

The 1924 Balata church is a miniature replica of 

the Montmartre Basilica with a beautiful panoramic 

view of Fort-de-France and the bay.

Take a break to cool down at the Alma river. 

The picturesque Fonds Saint-Denis village, set in a 

floral landscape across from Mount Pelée. The route 

through the town of Morne Rouge takes you to the 

“Aileron”, where climbers embark on expeditions 

up Mount Pelée. From this location there is a 

magnificent coast-to-coast view of Martinique. 

Saint-Pierre, the “little Paris of the Antilles”, was 

completely destroyed in the space of 3 minutes 

when Mount Pelée erupted. In 1990, it was officially 

recognized as a city of Art and History. You won’t 

want to miss taking a stroll through the ruins and a 

visit to the Frank Perret museum, established by the 

volcanologist himself. 

Stop at Le Prêcheur to see the Anse Céron beach 

beneath the ruins of Habitation Céron. Le Prêcheur 

is also the starting point of a 6-hour hike that will 

take you to Grand-Rivière on the Atlantic coast, at 

the northernmost point of the island.

LA MONTAGNE PELEE 


Martinique’s highest peak at an altitude of 4500 

feet, Mount Pelée is a globally renowned volcano. 

This remarkable site is a National Biological Reserve 

that spans 2285 hectares. Fantastic views of both 

the Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean sea can be 

expected on clear days. There are numerous outdoor 

recreation possibilities in the park. The summit trail 

is only for experienced hikers, you will find it on the 

regional hiking map, the “Plan Départemental des 

Itinéraires de Promenade et de Randonnée”. It’s 

the ideal trail to learn about volcanism and many 

aspects of geology, not to mention the plant-life 

that can only be found in this high-altitude climate. 

THE CARAVELLE NATURE RESERVE 

Located on the Caravelle peninsula in Martinique’s 

Atlantic North district, the Caravelle nature reserve 

is an exceptional natural site. The reserve is home 

to the remains of a tropical dry forest as well as a 

mangrove swamp. The preservation of the mangrove 

swamp is vital for the survival of the endemic Whitebreasted 

Trasher, an endangered species. 

Making tourism sustainable is the main concern on 

the Caravelle peninsula, each year brings crowds of 

tourists to the site, attracted by the ruins of the 

Dubuc castle and the museum that recounts the past 

of this former sugar estate. In experimental areas 

on the reserve, rehabilitation techniques are being 

tested in zones that have been heavily trampled. 

This site is indeed a genuine national asset.

“Les Jardins de la Mer” is an aquatic park where the 

island’s main ecosystems are presented. Discover 

the six water biotopes (main theme of the tour: 

the water cycle): the river, the swamp, the laguna, 

the mangrove, the reef and the coral reef laguna. 

Families will enjoy the park’s eco-tourism approach 

that combines fun (the mascot is a little drop of 

water named Gouttelette), learning (the water 

cycle, interactions between aquatic ecosystems and 

dependent species, defining and understanding the 

ecosystem notion), interaction (live native plants 

and animals that live in freshwater, brackish water, 

and seawater), and interrogation (arousing interest 

and questions through observation and touch: touch 

pool).

LE ROCHER DU DIAMANT 

Conservatoire du Littoral Site 

A striking rocky peak, the Diamond Rock is owned 

by the Conservatoire du Littoral. The site hosts an 

incredible population of seabirds, the location has 

ideal nesting conditions: at least 13 species have 

been identified, such as the Brown Noddy, the 

Bridled Tern, Red and Yellow-billed Tropicbirds, 

the Brown Booby, the Magnificent Frigatebird, the 

Zenaida Dove... the Rocher is also a prime diving 

spot where over 18 different species of coral and 

fish have been observed. Another rare, protected 

species that makes its home on the islet is Lacépède’s 

ground snake (Liophis cursor). Although access to 

the Rocher is forbidden, a live video stream of life 

on the Rocher is made available to visitors at the 

Espace Muséographique Bernard David in Diamant. 

Visitors to the Bernard David museum can also see 

the permanent exhibit on the history, geology and 

ecology of the Rock.

L’ETANG DES SALINES - RAMSAR SITE -

Learn all about the mangrove ecosystem on the

THE STE ANNE ISLETS NATURE RESERVE 

One of the most significant bird nesting sites in 

the Antilles is located off the coast of the Baie des 

Anglais, between Pointe Baham and Pointe Coton. 

Four islets constitute the site: Hardy Islet, Burgeaux 

Islet, Percé Islet and Poirier Islet. At least five seabird 

species reproduce here: the Sooty Tern, the Bridled 

Tern, the Brown Noddy, Audubon’s Shearwater 

and the Red-billed Tropicbird. Other species have 

also been observed: the Ruddy Turnstone, the 

Semipalmated Sandpiper, the Least Sandpiper 

and the Peregrine Falcon, a bird that preys on the 

reserve’s marine species. 

Access to the reserve is strictly forbidden to both 

boats and people, as is the 50-meter peripheral noaccess 

zone. Anchoring a boat within 300 meters 

around the perimeter is subject to regulations, 

and the speed is limited to 5 knots within the 

perimeter.

THE MORNE GOMMIER SCENIC VISTA 

This scenic vista is located along the Discovery 

Route from Morne Aca to Pointe Borgnese. 

The Morne Gommier scenic vista is located near 

Morne Aca and belongs to the Conservatoire 

du Littoral. This vista provides a stunning 360° 

panoramic view across the entire southern part of 

the island. 

One of the facilities at the vista point was established 

on private property by the Tourism and Culture 

Association for the Exploration of Rural Martinique 

(ATCDMP). 

A viewpoint indicator and telescopes are available 

to the public. Be sure to stop by the boutique.

Culture 

Martinique has a very rich culture. The island has 

been marked by multiple influences and cultural 

mixing; its eventful past is evidenced by its 

architecture, historic monuments and museums. 

Throughout the year, there are many events where 

one can participate in vibrant traditions and 

experience the warmth, creativity and hospitality of 

the local people: Christmas and the famed “chanté 

noël”, Easter and the traditional “Matoutou de 

crabes”, Carnival - a colorful, cheerful event, goodnatured

Library is by far the city’s most beautiful monument. 

Designed by architect Henri Pick, a contemporary of 

Gustave Eiffel and the Saint-Louis Cathedral designer, 

the library was disassembled and transported to 

Martinique after serving as the Canada Pavilion at 

the 1898 World Expo. Despite its unusual Romano- 

Byzantine architectural style, this building blends 

into its environment well.

THE ANSE CAFARD MEMORIAL

On April 8th, 1830, a slave boat was maneuvering 

in risky conditions off the coast of Diamant. At 

11 pm, the raging ocean finally got her way and 

the boat was smashed up against the rocks. The 

boat was completely destroyed, and 46 bodies were 

found the next day. The slave-ship sailors were 

buried in the Diamant cemetery, and the drowned 

Africans were buried not far from the coastline. This 

monument is a tribute to the victims of slave trade; 

it was created by Laurent Valère, a local artist.

Martinique is proud of its local cuisine which is a 

reflection of the island itself: exotic, varied, colorful... 

Before the meal starts, you’ll want to try the “tipunch” 

aperitif drink: a measure of white rum, cane 

syrup and a slice of lime! The fine dining address 

list is a treasure-trove of Creole and French cuisine 

that food-lovers and connoisseurs alike will enjoy. 

Accras, paté en pot, colombo, blaff, “z’habitants” 

(delicious crawfish), stuffed crab... this mildly spicy 

fare will arouse your taste buds. Seafood specialties 

such as lobster, lambis (shellfish), sea urchins, 

and soudons (sweet clams) are served in many 

restaurants where the beautiful surroundings often 

make for an even more enchanting meal. 

Traditional Events 

CARNIVAL 

During the four-day holiday of Carnival festivities, 

activity on the island nearly comes to a standstill. 

Preparations begin as early as Epiphany Sunday 

with the election of the Carnival Queens, and last 

until the day before Fat Sunday (dimanche gras). 

The parades and parties start on Big Sunday and 

finish on Ash Wednesday when the carnival effigy, 

the “Vaval” King, is burned. Themes: 

Fat Monday: comical wedding, 

Fat Tuesday: red devils, 

Ash Wednesday: she-devils and black & white dress. 

A few examples of Creole dishes 

Appetizers: 

Accras: small fritters also known as “marinades”, 

made with fish, cod, shellfish or vegetables. 

Féroce: a dish made of avocado, cod and manioc flour 

with a touch of hot peppers. 

Pâté en pot: a soup made of otherwise unusable 

mutton parts, vegetables, capers and white wine. 

Crabes farcis (stuffed crab): stuffing made of crab 

meat and spices, served in a crab shell. 

Main courses: 

Fish or Shellfish Blaff: the fish is cooked in a courtbouillon 

flavored with thyme, parsley, bay leaves, 

chives and hot peppers. 

Colombo: can be made with pork or kid (goat 

meat)… – the meat is prepared in a curry sauce. 

Court-bouillon: a broth with tomatoes and local 

spices, used to cook fish. 

The main course is served with local vegetables: yam, 

Chinese cabbage, breadfruit or vegetables au gratin 

(chayote, papaya). 

Desserts: 

Blanc-manger: a dessert made of coconut and 

milk, flavored with vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. 

Tropical fruit sorbets: mango, soursop, passion 

fruit… 

Liqueurs: 

An old rum or an excellent cognac, you can’t go 

wrong! 

TRADITIONAL SAILBOATS: 

YOLE AND GOMMIER RACES 

The Carib Indians used to travel from one island to 

another in dugouts made from “gommier” trees. 

These days, with the addition of a sail, the gommiers 

can be seen in competitions during patron-saint 

celebrations. The ‘yole rondes’ are made by local 

boat makers. All of the necessary materials to build 

them come from the forests of Martinique. Two 

conditions must be met in order to successfully 

navigate in this frequently temperamental boat: the 

physical prowess of the crew, and the yole captain’s 

excellent knowledge of the sea. The races are 

held year round, but the highlight is the Tour de 

la Martinique in August, a seven-leg competition 

around the island.

CRAFTWORK

NIGHTLIFE 

In Fort-de-France as well as in other towns, there is a 

wide range of discotheques open from Wednesday 

through Sunday where you can dance the night 

away to the tune of music from the Antilles and 

elsewhere. A variety of music styles can be found 

including jazz, French pop music, typical club 

music or Caribbean music. There are also many 

live shows... The majority of the piano bars and 

nightclubs are located in Fort-de-France, but you 

can also enjoy yourself in the many “hip” places in 

smaller towns, savor a drink while listening to music 

played by small groups. Hotels also organize a 

variety of shows on a regular basis (traditional and 

folk dance), as well as evening events with a band for

For over two years now, Gilles has been bringing 

sophistication and creativity to his culinary creations, 

food-lovers will be amazed by this exceptional chef 

whose menus include, just to name a few: braised 

conch, Caribbean bass in a honey nutmeg sauce, 

goat meat pie and an exquisite banana tart. Your 

taste buds will thank you. 

Only two rooms, but Clémentine has made the 

most out of each room’s assets. The first room is 

rather cozy, with gold tones and lovely multi-colored 

fish paintings. The second room is very luminous. 

Seating for 32 total. Luminous and fresh. A stone 

trail graces the floor and the walls are decked with 

Southern French landscapes, interspersed with 

vines. But the best is yet to come, the food on the 

plates. The result is inventive, a subtle blend of local 

and French products. This blending is evidenced in 

dishes such as the fried foie gras, the local fruit 

chutney or the roasted “lambi” (shellfish) served 

with rougaille and Espelette pepper sauce or the 

calves sweetbreads pastry with mushroom sauce...

Martinique: 

What is the best time of year to go to 

Martinique? 

Martinique is known as the island of ‘eternal 

summer’, it is blessed with mild temperatures all 

year long. The weather is always warm, and water 

temperatures range from 25°C to 30°C. 

The so-called ‘rainy season’ from June to November 

is nothing more than some brief heavy showers. 

Hikers during the rainy season may wish to take a 

guide along with them, as some of the trails in the 

northern part of the island can be slippery at this 

time of year. Those who love sailing, or other water 

sports that require wind or waves, prefer to come 

to Martinique from mid-December to June, simply 

because it’s breezier then. Of course, there is never 

a bad time to come to Martinique. 

Where are the best beaches located? 

If your idea of a great vacation involves pictureperfect 

beaches, then the southern part of the 

island is for you. A plethora of sublime beaches dots 

the entire southern Caribbean coast. Swimmers 

will also appreciate the secluded lagoon feel of 

the clear waters along the southeastern coast 

which is protected by coral reef barriers. In the 

north, you can enjoy the lush setting of the black 

sand beaches of Anse Turin, near Le Carbet, and 

especially Anse Couleuvre, near Prêcheur. 

Does the landscape vary? 

Martinique is not only a beach destination, in fact, 

one of the island’s main assets is the amazing 

diversity of its landscapes. The wild, mountainous 

North is every bit as fascinating for visitors as the 

Southern beaches. From the island’s center, swathed 

in thick, verdant vegetation, to the towering peaks 

of Mount Pelée (4500 feet) and the Carbet Peaks 

in the north, Martinique is a genuine paradise for 

outdoor enthusiasts. This stunning alpine landscape 

has been classified as a regional natural park. 

Is Martinique an exotic destination? 

Martinique’s lush vegetation and constant sunshine 

are all you need to escape from the ‘same old’, 

same old», there are two ways of experiencing 

Martinique: one is to stay in one of the island’s 

major tourism areas, where everything you need 

is within walking distance; the other is to leave 

all that behind and really explore the island. You 

can discover its charming fishing villages perched 

on the island’s rolling green hills, or its northern 

mountains crisscrossed with gorges, streams and 

waterfalls, and the banana fields stretching along 

the coast. Why not try different hotels in different 

parts of the island? 

Where are the main areas of interest to tourists? 

The majority of the resorts are located in the 

Caribbean south: 

Les Trois-Ilets and la Pointe du Bout 

Le Diamant and Sainte-Luce 

Sainte-Anne and le Marin. 

Trinité-Tartane (Caravelle Peninsula) 

Is a rental car advisable? 

If you really want to strike out on your own to explore 

the island, a car is a must. Driving in Martinique is a 

pleasure, as the roads are safe and well maintained.

Those who can’t or don’t wish to drive can always 

hire a professional guide. 

What types of accommodations are there in 

Martinique? 

Lodging in Martinique is diverse and well 

organized around the major tourism attractions. 

On the southern coast and in Tartane, there are 

traditional hotels of good quality, usually two- or 

three-star properties, as well as the occasional 

four-star hotel. There are many residential 

hotels in the south that offer rooms, studios and 

apartments equipped with kitchenettes. You will 

also find furnished guest rooms and gîtes (selfcatering 

accommodations) including some that 

have been rated by Gîtes de France or Clévacances. 

Further away from the resorts, you will find more 

family-oriented accommodations. Farm inns are 

also becoming more and more popular across the 

island. 

Is it possible to find accommodations at high 

altitudes? 

Yes. Those who want to stay as close as possible 

to the volcanic north can opt for the Domaine de 

Saint-Aubin, one the few hotels in this area. In 

high altitude areas, you won’t find much besides 

apartments and rural self-catering rentals (gîtes), 

that can be booked through the Martinique Tourism 

Authority’s reservation service. 

What are some original ways to explore the 

island? 

Some specialized service providers organize 

excursions and guided mountain bike tours, for a 

half day or full day. 

Some particularly fun activities include: 

Kayak tours of the mangrove forests and islets. 

Flightseeing island tours by helicopter or seaplane. 

Guided 4x4 excursions. 

Horse riding tours. 

What is the ‘Route de la Trace’? 

The ‘Trace’ is one of the most scenic routes in 

Martinique. It was built in the 18th century as a 

bypass route to get around the Pitons du Carbet. 

This 30-kilometer route winds its way past the flanks 

of the Pitons and the foothills of Mount Pelée, from 

Fort-de-France to Morne Rouge. Sheltered beneath 

the stunning green canopy of the tropical forest 

with giant trees and tree ferns, this route is also 

the way to reach many hiking trailheads. There are 

several places of interest along the way, including 

the famous Balata Garden.

Is the island well-suited for ecotourism 

enthusiasts? 

Absolutely! Of all the Caribbean islands, Martinique 

is one of the few that has such a vast potential for 

green tourism, thanks especially to its volcanic 

north and its tropical forest that is unique to the 

region. With its well-marked hiking trails, exceptional 

canyoning sites, routes off the beaten track for 

4x4’s, horseback riding, and more, Martinique 

boasts a wide variety of ecotourism activities. You 

can hike just about anywhere, even near resorts. 

Martinique has a total of 31 marked trails that are 

maintained by the National Forest Service. Some of 

the best-known trails include: 

Canal de Beauregard known as the «Slave canal» 

La Trace des Jésuites 

La Trace des Caps 

La randonnée Grand-Rivière / Prêcheur 

Is there a variety of water sports? 

Windsurfing, water skiing, Optimist (dinghy) sailing 

and big-game fishing can all be done in Martinique. 

Martinique’s waters are ideal for all kinds of sports 

and adventures, so it would be a shame if you didn’t 

try at least one original activity. Keep in mind that 

safety standards in Martinique are just as strict as 

they are in France. A few examples of activities: 

Scuba diving for beginners or advanced divers. 

Snorkeling. 

Sea excursions around the island. 

Sailboat rental, with or without a skipper. 

Jet Ski excursions. 

Are there are any beautiful colonial homes 

left? 

Are there are any «extreme» activities? 

Yes. You can go canyoning in the north of the island, 

accompanied by a trained guide and on the windy 

Atlantic coast, you can try your hand at kite surfing, 

from mid-December to June. There are schools 

and sailing clubs that provide kite surfing lessons. 

There are also tree adventure courses to be found in 

Martinique. 

What is a Yole? 

This large, traditional boat is made of wood, and 

generally measures from 7 to 10.5 meters in length. 

In the past, yoles were used as fishing boats. The 

yole ronde is a boat with a shallow draft, without a 

keel, ballast, center-board, or rudder. It can carry 

one or two sails. While navigating, the yole ronde 

is balanced thanks to wooden poles that cross 

the craft, sticking out well beyond the sides. Crew

The most beautiful examples of colonial architecture 

are to be found on the old inland sugar plantations. 

These « habitations, » as they are called, were built 

from the 18th century onwards by rich plantation 

owners, during colonialism’s darkest hour - when 

slavery was in practice. Those habitations that are 

open to the public will give you an idea of what life 

was like in that era, especially if they still have their 

original furniture and decor, as is the case with 

the Habitation Clément, Habitation Latouche, and 

Habitation Leyritz. 

Is the wildlife dangerous? 

There isn’t much to fear when it comes to 

Martinique’s animals. Due to the tropical climate, 

it’s likely that you’ll occasionally cross paths with 

some harmless insects and small lizards such as the 

«anolis» that can be seen on walls all over. You may 

encounter trap-door spiders («matoutou falaise») 

while hiking in the forest, but they are not deadly. 

There are snakes, but they keep to themselves, 

snake-sightings are extremely rare.

Is it possible to visit working distilleries? 

Yes, because this is where the best ‘rhum agricoles’ 

in the world are produced. Since 1996, the quality 

of Martinique’s rum is guaranteed by the AOC 

label (Official French designation which guarantees 

the area from which the rum has come and the 

method by which it has been made). The island has 

around ten working distilleries; most of them open 

to the public. A visit to these distilleries will help 

you to understand the work and skill involved in 

transforming sugarcane.

What are the ‘Fonds Blancs’ (white

Fonds blancs are shallow areas in the sea with white 

sandbanks. The water is often waist deep. The most 

famous is the ‘Baignoire de Joséphine’ (Joséphine’s 

bathtub), off the coast of François. Legend has 

it that Joséphine de Beauharnais, Napoléon’s 

Martinique-born wife, liked to bathe there. 

Is Carnival a good time to travel to 

Martinique? 

Keep in mind that all activity on the island will be 

geared towards the four days of Carnival, which 

are all holidays. Preparations begin as early as 

Epiphany Sunday with the election of the Carnival 

Queens, and last until the day before Big Sunday 

(dimanche gras). The parades and parties start on 

Big Sunday and finish on Ash Wednesday when the 

carnival effigy, the ‘Vaval’ King, is burned.
