Leveraging Resources
Joseph Walker - 2012 Chair
Welcome to the International Rubber Expo, 182nd Technical Meeting & Educational
Symposium. Cincinnati is proving again to be a great host, and on behalf
of the Rubber Division’s Executive and Steering Committees, I would like to offer
our thanks for attending and to Cincinnati for the hospitality. This year you will
have the opportunity to visit over 150 suppliers of raw materials, equipment, tool
makers and service providers – all under one roof, giving you and them the
opportunity to meet in the most cost effective manner available today. Something
else to remember: They are all dedicated to the rubber industry.
The expo and the technical sessions are really all about innovation; innovation in
manufacturing, materials and process innovation - all with the purpose of providing you with information
and resources to give you competitive advantage in your marketplace. Since we are all about innovation,
we need to understand innovation and what drives it. Growth is impossible without innovation and
innovation is the root of growth and it drives prosperity. Innovation does not occur without a problem to
be solved. Problems are solved with generation of new ideas and viewpoints. These come from individuals.
So what drives the innovation concept to reality? Simply stated - Resources. They are the silent
contributor to the innovation process. How do you know when you have an innovative idea? When you
can say that the idea is original, important, rare and has longevity. Again, how do you know? Unless you
perform some sort of due diligence to check your idea out, by going outside your own space, you will not
know if it is original or unique. This means you need access to extended resources to discuss your idea
and get feedback so you can refine your concept.
From analysis of the rubber industry, it is seen that over the last dozen years the average number of
employees per rubber company has dropped 62% and the number of rubber companies has dropped
almost 8%. So, if innovation is the root of growth, who is responsible for innovation at your company
and how is it getting done? With fewer people to do the work, each person has more jobs and is wearing
more hats. Despite the disturbing trends, innovation continues to happen. But, it has become more
expensive, as measured in time units, to perform innovation’s demanded tasks. This is due to the fact
that there is less time and fewer people to do the work. This means that the existing resources within the
rubber industry are over committed. This is surely no surprise to those of you reading this article.
Timothy Higgins - 2012 Local Coordinating Committee Chair
I’d like to personally welcome each of you to the 2012 International Rubber Expo, 182nd
Technical Meeting & Educational Symposium. This year there are over 150 exhibitors
set to display, interact, inform and exchange. Cincinnati’s intimate locale along the Ohio
River creates truly a first-class meeting destination. In fact, Cincinnati has gained
national praise from publications, such as USA Today, CNN.com and Esquire, as a
premier meeting and convention destination. It’s an exciting time for Rubber Division,
ACS, as the world of elastomers continues to be an exciting area in which to work/
study/play, and we’ll continue to meet and bring inspired people together in forums
like this to ensure “our” Rubber Division, “your” Rubber Division remains at the cutting edge of industry.
This year’s conference will boast over 100 technical papers covering topics such as New Commercial
Developments, Vulcanization, Rubber Aging and Durability and many more. This is in combination with
the Student Colloquium and Poster Session, Educational Symposium, and Job Fair.
I’d like to thank each of you for attending our event and bringing your expertise to our gathering. You, as
organization leaders and industry participants, have the vision, the knowledge, the wherewithal and the
experience to help us pave our way into the future. You are truly our greatest asset today and tomorrow,
and we could not accomplish what we do without your support and leadership. Throughout this expo, I
ask you to stay engaged, keep us proactive and help us shape the future of the Division and industry.
On behalf of the Rubber Division, ACS staff and Local Coordinating Committee, I would like to thank you
for your participation and involvement. We hope your time here is productive and enjoyable.
What is being discussed here is about finding, cultivating (and exploiting) professional relationships. This is called networking. It forms a fabric, a
weave – a tapestry made of professional colleagues, customers and suppliers. It is the 4th dimension where problems, needs, wants and ideas can
be discussed. It is, in essence, a safety zone, and when properly used, will help prevent surprise and will answer the innovation questions and let you
know if the problem is worth solving and if your approach to the solution is sound.
For the rubber industry, this network has a name: Rubber Division, ACS. Its expos, technical meetings and educational symposiums are the ‘go to
places’ for education, industry insight, technology and help. It is, without doubt, the most cost effective way to leverage R&D dollars. Remember the
real currency of innovation in our industry is TIME. Rubber Division, ACS is the only organization dedicated to the advancement of rubber technologies.
It is the only organization that provides a single event where you can engage all your suppliers; from raw materials and mixers to fabrication
equipment and tooling and at the same time go to school to learn the most up to date materials and process technologies. The Rubber Division provides
that network so that its members can enjoy a competitive advantage.
In conclusion, remember that your Rubber Division is here to be your extended technical resource pool. It should be made an integral part of your
innovation process. It provides you with ready access to resources that would be impossible for a single manufacturing organization to have and
maintain, therefore becoming the most cost effective solution for minimizing research and development, as well as technical support cost.
Educational Symposium
Rubber Division, ACS with the help of a generous sponsorship from Trostel, Ltd. is offering new educational seminars this fall to complete the Rubber
Division Educational Symposium. Trostel is focusing on technical excellence and innovation in our industry. Since 1858, the company founders, Albert Trostel
Protecting Your Intellectual Property
When the Wolf is At the Door –
(and the Wolf is Always at the Door!)
Thursday, October 11, 2012
8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Hyatt Regency, Buckeye B
Topic 1 Documenting Your Ideas
What to document. Why document. How to document.
How long to keep documentation. What not to document.
Topic 2 Patent vs. Trade Secret – What’s the difference?
What is a patent, how do you get one, what does a patent do
(and not do) for you? What is a trade secret, how do you establish
and protect one, what does a trade secret do (and not do) for
you? How do you decide which is better?
Featuring: In crosslinking applications, organic peroxide
products act on the polymer itself, not the initial monomer.
The organic peroxide “builds bridges” between the
polymer chains to improve the mechanical properties
and heat resistance of the product. In rubber, they are
an excellent alternative to traditional vulcanization systems
(sulfur) to provide nitrosamine free solutions.
Arkema has over 50 years of experience in manufacturing
organic peroxides. These products include organic
peroxides sold under the Luperox, Di-Cup and Vul-Cup
trade names. We also offer a non-organic peroxide
based line of vulcanizing agents sold under the ECHO
FOR A WORLD IN MOTION.
INTRODUCING RHENOCURE ® TP/S
Rhein Chemie has merged production
of VOCOL ® ZBPD powder with our
equivalent RHENOCURE ® TP/S.
Rhein Chemie has merged production of VOCOL ® ZBPD POWDER with our equivalent RHENOCURE ® TP/S. The VOCOL ® PDR
brand is discontinued and the new product will be sold as RHENOCURE ® TP/S. Rhein Chemie has slightly modified the odor and
storage stability of the formulation and believes this adjustment will make future RHENOCURE ® TP/S product supplies more secure.
RHENOCURE ® TP/S has 67% of active ingredient on 33% silica compared to Vocol‘s 75% activity level. Although both powders
were often used alternatively, some formulations may require adjustment.
For customers requiring a polymer bound product, Rhein Chemie offers RHENOGRAN ® TP-50 with a 50% activity level. For technical
assistance contact Jon Nienaber, Rhein Chemie Technical Service Department at jon.nienaber@rheinchemie.com or 440-279-1285.
Test samples are available by calling 800-BUYCHEM. Visit us at Booth 114.
industrial materials. RheoSpectris makes possible
the measurement of material properties over an unexplored
dynamic range (up to 2,000 Hz), very rapidly
(in less than 1 second), without contact (i.e., without
damaging the sample) and over a wide temperature
range (up to 400°C). The instrument offers several
sample holder geometries designed to allow the
characterization of soft (~100 Pa) and very stiff (~500
At Zeon, we believe that protecting the environment and
reducing waste should be a high priority for any socially
responsible organization.
Sustainability:
a key element
in our long
term planning.
Our sustainability support efforts
include our recently launched Recover
& Reuse program, implementing metal
skids for delivery of our products. This
new method of product distribution
eliminates the need for wood pallets
and cardboard packaging, helping
reduce landfill discard.
To learn more about Zeon’s practices and how they can play
a role in your company’s sustainability efforts, visit us at
