Description
The Latin name ‘umbilicus’ comes from the navel-like dip in the centre of the rounded leaves, ‘rupestris’ means growing near rocks.
Grows in old stone walls, in damp and shade.
Flowers
The flowers are whitish-green, borne in a tapered inflorescence.
Leaves
Succulent fleshy, water-retaining leaves. Basal leaves: rounded, with a long stalk at the centre of the leaf. The leaves are fleshy with scalloped margins.
Fruits Seeds
Capsule: tiny capsules the length of the stalk containing seeds.
Edible
Leaves, crunchy when young.
Medical
Leaves: sap applied to scratches as disinfectant and for pain relief.
