In 1449 Bernardo Rossellino received a commission for a tabernacle of the sacrament in Sant'Egidio, Florence, for which Ghiberti made the bronze door behind which the sacrament is reserved. Bernardo employed the centralized perspective that Brunelleschi had used in his sacrament tabernacle (1427; destroyed) in San Jacopo in Campo Corbellini, Florence, and his controlled depiction of a recessed niche, with its coffered ceiling and stately procession of adoring angels who seem to enter from side chapels, marks this work as one of the most innovative examples of church furnishing of its date.
