BOYS SWIMMING

WIAA DIVISION 1 STATE MEET

WAUKESHA – Ben Halambeck was able to break a minute in the 100-yard breaststroke in his final race of his high school career Saturday.

The senior from D.C. Everest placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.70 seconds at Waukesha South High School.

“I’m just thankful that I was able to compete this year and I didn’t get contact traced, didn’t get COVID,” Halambeck said. “It was a great overall experience just to be able to swim this year. It was a great experience to go to state four times and I just really enjoyed this year because it was different and it’s just something I get to tell my kids that I swam through COVID and stuff like that.

“I noticed at sectionals I didn’t have a fast tempo and I have good underwaters, so I really focused on having a fast tempo in this and just forced myself to have a good turnover in my strokes and I think that was a key to my success.”

Sophomore Konnor Pilger of Stevens Point placed 13th in the 200 freestyle at 1:47.03.

“I felt like my 200 went really well,” Pilger said. “I dropped about a second and I won my heat, which was my goal. The guy next to me took it out really fast and I kind of made it my job to stick with him and that was my goal throughout the whole race."

Pilger also finished 15th in the 500 at 4:52.09.

“It means a ton because I didn’t think we would have it this year, but since we are able to it’s just a lot of fun with all the team,” Pilger said. “Also, I made it to state individually for the first time, which is an experience I would have never gotten if they canceled the season.”
