In the 20 years since the original flavor of Mean Girls premiered in 2004, plenty has changed. We’ve seen a few presidents, Britain left the EU, Crocs got cool, eggs got expensive, pickleball became a thing, and, probably most importantly, the movie’s star, Lindsay Lohan, had a baby. 

The film that made Cady Heron a household name, thanks to Lohan in the lead role, has also seen a few makeovers of its own: It was adapted for the Broadway stage, for one thing, and then that musical adaptation was adapted for the screen, which premiered in New York City on Monday. Though Angourie Rice, recently of The Last Thing He Told Me fame, is filling Lohan’s army pants and flip flops as Cady in this version, Lohan stepped out for the movie’s big opening. She didn’t wear pink, but don’t worry, it wasn’t a Wednesday. She can still sit with us.

These days, Lohan is closer to the age of the parents in the film, like the try-hard mom played by Amy Poehler, whose declaration in the original movie of being “not like a regular mom” but instead “a cool mom” was instantly etched into the pop culture hall of fame. Lohan and husband Bader Shammas welcomed son Luai last July, and the actor revealed her parenting hopes on the red carpet Monday.

Asked by People on the red carpet whether she identifies as “a cool mom,” Lohan, laughing, was quick to answer: “I hope so!”

Given that she already embraced her identity as “not a regular mom, [but] a postpartum mom” in an Instagram post in August, we’d say she’s well on her way to coolness. Next step: Getting back on that “Jingle Bell Rock” choreography in time to coach her kid for the school talent show. No matter what, one thing's for certain: we’re getting cheese fries.
