Colin Farrell is trading in the dreary, adult world of True Detective for something a little sunnier. The Irish actor has been cast alongside Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, and Alison Sudol in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell will play “Graves, a wizard that Newt Scamander (Redmayne) meets in New York.” Actually, given that the plot of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them reportedly centers on Newt’s dealings with a secret community of witches and wizards, Farrell’s part may not be all that far off from the weird, underground world of True Detective. Though we imagine the subject matter here will be a shade lighter, Graves isn’t exactly a friendly-sounding name, is it? Will Farrell be going full villain? And if so, does he maybe regret shaving off Ray Velcoro’s rakish facial hair? Accio mustache!

Though there’s no confirmation yet that Farrell will be the film’s villain, we know that the movie already has a bumbling sidekick (Fogler’s non-magical Jacob) and a bewitching leading lady (Katherine Waterston’s Tina); now all it needs is a little bit of menace. Some had speculated that Ezra Miller’s character, Kredan, would be the film’s antagonist, but there’s always room for a little more Dark Arts. And, given what we know about nuanced Harry Potter characters like Severus Snape and Sirius Black, we know better than to expect straightforward morality from J.K. Rowling.

But the fun of this spin-off/prequel is that we don’t know exactly what to expect. In this era of so many films and TV shows based on well-known comic books and novels, it’s great to have a little mystery back in our lives. Let’s just hope this mystery proves more satisfying than Farrell’s other recent project.
