Rupert Everett: 'Nothing worse than gay parents'

Talk about being under fire, causing a stir and making comments that have gotten a bunch of people riled up.

Gay actor Rupert Everett said in an interview on Sunday, "There's nothing worse than gay parents."

And that quote is not sitting well with some of his fans, and, of course, GLAAD.

The 53-year-old told the U.K.'s Sunday Times Magazine that his mother, Sara, who has met his boyfriend, "still wishes I had a wife and kids."

He adds, "She thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her. I can't think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads. Some people might not agree with that. Fine! That's just my opinion. I'm not speaking on behalf of the gay community. In fact, I don't feel like I'm part of any 'community.' The only community I belong to is humanity and we've got too many children on the planet, so it's good not to have more."

In response, GLAAD president Herndon Graddick was quick to issue a statement: "Since Everett shared his outdated opinion, gay parents, as well as their friends and families, have voiced overwhelming disappointment. Children aren't hurt when raised by caring gay parents, but they are when uninformed people in the public eye insult their families."

Everett is known for being outspoken. In 2009, he said in an interview that he would not advise actors to come out.
