An orange "Rough Road" sign next to traffic.
Posted advisories warn drivers of a “rough road” and call for reducing driving speeds from 50 mph to 35 mph on Shepard Road in St. Paul Tuesday, March 14, 2023. Heavy snows, rising temperatures, daytime melt, overnight freeze and rain — it all adds up to a series of freeze-thaw cycles that have jackhammered tired streets across the metro. We asked readers of the Morning Report newsletter to let us know where they are experiencing potholes. Here’s what they say (edited for punctuation, brevity, etc.):

Arlington Avenue

“The entire strip on Arlington Avenue from Wheelock to Rice Street is like a landmine.”

Burns Avenue

“Burns Avenue from White Bear Avenue to Highway 61.”

Dale Street

“Typically, Dale Street northbound (near Marshall Avenue) always has potholes. Back in about January, I didn’t swerve fast enough and ended up losing a hubcap and a flat tire as well. When I brought the car in, it turned out the wheels had to be replaced — the tire was fine. It was quite an expensive fix!”

“Dale Street South from Larpenteur to 94.”

Fairview Avenue

“Fairview Avenue in St. Paul should for safety sake be closed down from Highland Parkway to St. Paul Avenue.”

“Even worse is just south of there, northbound on Edgcumbe from Fort Road to the start of Fairview. Treacherous!”

“There’s a stretch of Fairview with particularly bad potholes — namely, about two blocks north of Ford Parkway going south. Yesterday (Monday), I was on this stretch of Fairview and you had to drive in the turn lane in order to avoid them. That’s just not safe.”

“I passed a really bad one today, going south on Fairview between Randolph and Hartford.”

“I turned onto Fairview, right past St. Catherine’s University, where the road became very precarious. Cars were swerving really far out of the way to avoid the really bad potholes. Potholes are right at about Highland and Fairview intersection.”

Ford Parkway

“There’s a BIG hole on Ford Parkway — just uphill from Cretin, before Finn.”

“Between Raymond and Ford Parkway!!!! Oh my goodness. The worst I have seen so far for potholes.”

Pelham Boulevard

“Pelham from the East River Parkway to I-94 is a disaster. The concrete streets have deteriorated and any asphalt is like moon craters. … From Emerald to Franklin it is even worse (that’s Minneapolis so I reported it to them).”

Pennsylvania Avenue

“The potholes are terrible along Pennsylvania Avenue in St. Paul. That’s my main thoroughfare to work, but the potholes are so bad I’ve had to plan an alternate route. Thank you for allowing a quick vent session on those potholes.”

Rice Street and Pennsylvania Avenue

“Just past the Rice Street/Pennsylvania intersection heading east for about three blocks the road is HORRENDOUS!”

“I was astonished by the series of potholes I encountered by turning south onto Rice Street from Larpenteur. The string of potholes at the southwest corner of that intersection were almost enough to break my car’s axle. Usually, I can find a swerving path to avoid the worst holes, but they were all whoppers.”

River Road

“Perhaps St. Paul’s method of reducing speeding? Sister hit one on the River Road and got a flat.”

Shepard Road

“Shepard Road from Montreal down to Davern … It’s h… on wheels to say the least.”

“In my 50 years of driving in St. Paul I have never seen worse potholes than those on Shepard Road. One area authority has placed large orange ‘Rough Road’ signs with lowered speed limit well below the normal 50 mph. Serious car damage could result driving that particular road.”

“Shepard between 35E and Davern legitimately looks like it was hit by artillery fire. I drive on it three-four mornings a week and I’ve finally given up and found alternate ways of getting around.”

Snelling Avenue

“Northbound on Snelling Avenue at Sargent Avenue. The right lane has seven to 10 potholes that are epic proportion. I live on Sargent and now avoid driving on Snelling altogether to avoid the potholes.”

Summit Avenue

“Start at Victoria and stop at St. Thomas is all you need to see and feel.”

Vandalia Street and Territorial Road

“The side roads around my apartment complex, Union Flats, in St Paul. … The roads are absolutely horrendous. I have to go 3-6 mph just to be safe and I drive an SUV.”

“The northbound lane on Vandalia between I-94 and University Avenue is one of the worst stretches I’ve ever seen.  And Territorial Road between Vandalia and Hwy 280 is terrible, too.”

Wabasha Street

“A stretch of Wabasha on the west side near Vision Loss Center os really bad for a few blocks.”

White Bear Avenue

“There are some epic ones on White Bear Avenue … between maybe Case and Seventh Street … I’m pretty sure I need an alignment and some dental work after finding them the hard way.”

Everywhere!

“The potholes are bad everywhere with the exception of recently paved roads. St. Paul should have triple the amount of crews out patching them now since patching is really all they can do to push the problem further into the future. A huge investment into repaving the roads is the real solution.”
