What’s being built in Gothenburg?

Gothenburg is booming. Between 2016–2035, there will be €100bn of investment in the city’s properties and infrastructure. Unsurprisingly, you can now see loads of construction sites and cranes when looking out of the tram window. What is being built? Let’s take a look…

Älvstaden

Älvstaden translates to “The River City”. This work will transform the face of the Gothenburg and particularly its connection to the Göta alv (Göta river). The ambition of the project is to create a vibrant and attractive inner city that makes the most of its proximity to water.

Project facts:

• 25,000 new apartments (much needed!)

• 50,000 new jobs

• 5,000,000 ㎡ buildable area is largest development in Scandinavia

• Älvstaden includes projects at Backaplan, Central Station , Frihamnen , Gullbergsvass , Lindholmen , Ringön, Masthuggskajen and Södra Älvstranden

Hisingsbron

This giant of a bridge, measuring approximately 350m long will be the link between mainland Gothenburg and Hisingen island. The visually appealing milestone for the city will also be regulating traffic both on and across the river.

Project Facts:

• Central lifting span

• Pedestrian/cyclist access through stairs and elevators

• Lighting design will be visible from many areas in Gothenburg

• Expected completion date: 2021

Central Station Area

The area around central station, gateway to Gothenburg, is to be transformed into an eye-catching first impression of the city. And not only that, it will also be a living space. This huge project is a concoction of restaurants/cafes, walkways, gorgeous views and sky-high buildings.

Project Facts:

• 2,000 new homes to be developed

• 19,000 jobs to be created

• New (underground) Central Station with Västlänken

• Slick Urban Settlement

• Expected completion date: 2035

Västlänken

This has been the subject of some debate and I’ve seen the odd protest around Gothenburg. with people suggesting it’s a waste of money. But others support this development because it removes the logistically difficult “bag” design of central station (trains go in and out the same way). Translating to ‘the Western Link’, this new commuter and regional railway upgrade will relieve the pressure on Central station – creating fluid travel for people coming in and out of the city. Shortening travel times, improving urban development and promoting sustainable travel in the region.

• 100,000 residents and 130,000 workers will be within walking and cycling distance from a commuter train station in central Gothenburg

• 3 New Underground Stations; Central, Haga, Korsvägen

• Safer and greener space for Korsvägen

• Expected completion date: 2026

Gamlestaden

Gamelstaden or, the Old Town is set for a new injection of life… and then some. An attractive blend of the old with the new, the work will enable the district to thrive in 21st century Gothenburg. The impressive development at Gamlestads torg is already complete.

• New housing, city shopping and services

• Revamp of transport infrastructure, including more bridges over Säveån and a direct link to Munkebäck

• Inhabitants expected to double

• Expected completion date: 2035

Lindholmen

This development is not only set to reshape the city’s skyline but will redevelop the district to foster both business and community life. Here we can expect commercial and cultural hub to further develop. At 245m high, Karlatornet, will be the tallest building in the Nordics (with 4 more tall buildings to be built around it creating a mini-district in itself).

• 3,500 jobs estimated to be created

• 2,700 new homes planned by 2026

• Student accommodation, shops, schools, nursing homes, restaurants, hotels and more

• European Innovation Centre (constructed by Geely)

• And not forgetting, Karlatornet, the tallest skyscraper in the Nordic region
