Who is Jonathan Hyde?

Born May 21, 1948, Jonathan Hyde is an Australian actor from Brisbane, Queensland.

The 69-year-old originally studied law at university but travelled to London in 1969 to pursue a career in theatre.

He was awarded a coveted place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where he won the Bancroft Gold Medal for excellence in 1972, the year he graduated.

Jonathan is married to Scottish soprano Isobel Buchanan and the couple has two daughters together, one of which is British actress Georgia King.

What has Jonathan starred in and who does he play in A Very English Scandal?

Jonathan rose to international fame as loyal butler Herbert Cadbury in 1994's comedy film Richie Rich alongside Macaulay Culkin.

He went on to play Culverton Smith in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and as Warren Westridge in Anaconda.

Jonathan's most notable roles are as Sam Parrish/Van Pelt in Robin Williams' Jumanji and J.Bruce Ismay in 1997's Titanic.

In A Very English Scandal, Jonathan plays David Napley, a solicitor.

When does A Very English Scandal start on BBC and what's it about?

A Very English Scandal started on Sunday, May 20 at 9pm on BBC One.

There will be three hour-long episodes and it is based on John Preston's novel of the same name.

It tells the shocking true story of Jeremy Thorpe, a disgraced member of parliament who in 1979 was tried but later acquitted of conspiring to murder his ex-lover Norman Scott.

Jeremy was an accomplished violinist as well as an MP and died in 2014 aged 85.
