BAZ Luhrmann sported an incredibly youthful appearance last night as he attended the AACTA Awards in Sydney, Australia.

The Australian director, 59, looked worlds away from his former more rugged self as he walked the red carpet in a stylish black suit, white unbuttoned shirt and a silk neckerchief.

The Romeo + Juliet filmmaker's chic ensemble wasn't the only thing to turn heads but rather his wrinkle-free complexion.

The Great Gatsby director accentuated his new look by styling his grey hair off his face and sported a groomed moustache.

Baz shot to fame in 1992 with the hit film Strictly Ballroom before he went on to direct his retelling of the Shakespearean classic Romeo + Juliet in 1996.

The filmmaker has also directed the Golden Globe-winning Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

He then reunited with Nicole, 54, seven years later for cinematic epic Australia alongside Hugh Jackman.

The director last released The Great Gatsby in 2013 and is currently promoting his upcoming Elvis biopic.

Baz recently wrapped filming his upcoming Elvis biopic, which began shooting in January last year on the Gold Coast.

The cinema visionary was born as Mark Luhrmann in Sydney on 17 September 1962.

He changed his name to Baz in 1979 after earning the nickname from his father.

Baz's mother was a ballroom dance teacher and dress shop owner and his father ran a petrol station and movie theatre.

He was nominated an Oscar for Best Film for Moulin Rouge! and he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture.

For Strictly Ballroom, he won Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

He won British Academy Film Awards for Best Screenplay and the David Lean Award for direction for Romeo + Juliet.

He also won Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards for Best Direction and Best film for The Great Gatsby.

His wife Catherine Martin is a costume, production and set designer and a film producer and has won four Oscars for her work.

The couple met when Catherine was a student and married in 1997.
