The Village People

The American disco group, whose hits include Macho Man, In the Navy and YMCA, have been on the music scene for nearly 40 years. On Friday 19 May, they made a surprise appearance on the red carpet at this year's Cannes Film Festival in Nice, France, before a performance to a star-studded audience for the Cinema Against Aids Gala.

  • Lee Mouton (leather man), later replaced by Glenn Hughes and then in 1995, Eric Anzalone. In March 2001, Hughes died from lung cancer in New York City
  • Mark Mussler (construction worker), later replaced David Hodo, and then Mark Lee in 1982. By October 2013, Bill Whitefield was in the role
  • David Forrest (cowboy), later replaced by Randy Jones, and in 1980 Jeff Olson, then in 2013 Jim Newman 
  • Peter Whitehead (one of the group's early songwriters) appeared in the video for the group's first hit, San Francisco (You Got Me)
