Vancouver has lost another star. 

Canadian character actor Chris Gauthier—known widely for his work on Once Upon A Time and Smallville—died at the age of 48 this past weekend.

The English-born, Vancouver-based actor’s agency confirmed his untimely death in a statement.

“We can confirm that our dear friend and client, Chris Gauthier, died on Friday morning, February 23, at the age of 48,” TriStar Appearances/Event Horizon Talent wrote to TVLine.

Reportedly, the actor died after battling a short, undisclosed illness.

Since the announcement, Gauthier’s former colleagues have taken to social media to share messages on the actor’s life.

“This world is a bit smaller and colder now without you in it,” wrote Chad Colvin, Gauthier’s co-star in Eureka, in a Facebook post. “Chris was the literal textbook definition of a character actor. You may not have known his name but you knew his face, you knew his voice, and you knew that if he was onscreen, you were in for a helluva ride…he ALWAYS gave it his all when the camera was rolling.”

Meanwhile, Colin O'Donoghue, who played Hook to Gauthier’s Smee in Once Upon a Time, took to Instagram to share his message.

Among Gauthier’s acting credits are A Series of Unfortunate Events, iZombie, Supernatural, Watchmen, and Freddy vs. Jason.

He leaves behind his wife and two children.
