Very little is known about the life of Neapolitann artist Giovanni Battista Recco. His style is heavily influenced by the Spanish still-life painters, such as Juan de Zurbarán, whose work he may have seen either in Spain or in Naples. This strong composition is anchored by a cluster of white narcissi, which are luminous against the dark and sombre background. Recco has included his monogram in the decorative pattern on the Delft bowl that rests against the edge of the basket.
