F1 News: Monza Track To Undergo Serious Upgrade After Threat Revealed

Monza has been making necessary changes to the circuit for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix.

After coming under pressure from Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to initiate track upgrade work, which was scheduled to begin in September, Monza track authorities have prioritized the infrastructure upgrade work to secure its ongoing position on the Formula 1 calendar.

The circuit is bound by a contract to host the Italian Grand Prix until 2025, but in the long run, the venue's existence on the F1 calendar remains uncertain for several reasons. Thus, last year, the F1 CEO asked for the facility to be upgraded for Monza to secure a contract extension.

The upgrade work, which would cost €21 million, aims to elevate the Autodromo Nazionale Monza to modern global standards. The circuit upgrades are anticipated to continue until June 2024, concluding just shy of a month before the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, scheduled from 30th August to 1st September.

The areas slated for renovation involve upgrading the track surface, enhancing the grandstands, and improving the pit buildings. Speaking about the plans for this infrastructure overhaul, Italian Federation President Angelo Sticchi Damiani shared with the media:

“Our main goal is to bring the Autodromo back up to speed.

“We can no longer afford to have problems with the flow of fans, and we must offer greater comfort to those who come to the circuit. We have set ourselves three goals to best meet the requests made to us, and of these the first is the underpasses.

"The second goal is related to the grandstands. We still have several temporary structures, so we will build more solid structures that will provide all the amenities in line with what a spectator expects today. Each grandstand will be an island with all the necessary services inside, so that the public will not have to move around.

"Finally, a permanent type of roofing will be built over the pit building (it is currently a tensile structure). The support pillars will be reinforced because the structure will grow in height."
