I was especially impressed by his trackwork and backdrops. Bill has not only captured the mood Of the area and the flow of the tracks, but he's also given attention to such often overlooked details as lowering the ballast around the ties under the switch points, This is some of the finest track- work Ive seen in any scale. - Lloyd H. Milter, Wanatah, Ind Liked N projects: Well done to MODEL RAILROADER for a great project series, the N scale Carolina Central. Then to top off the January issue with the Kingsbury Branch It’s great to see small N’scale layouts, Thanks for demonstrating again that a small layout doesn't have to sacri- fice operation or appearance. email ‘from Jelf Shearier, Richuille, Mich AAttaboy letters okay: Unlike Mr. Van Zant (lanuary RPO), [have no problem ‘with you printing dozens If not hune dreds of "self-serving" letters in RPO. | think half the joy of getting an article published would be receiving positive feedback from other readers who have used the article in thelr own modeling. He did a great job and it was nice to be credited for inventing the ‘mushroom design, tm now building my third layout using this idea. The late Gordy Odegard of your staff saw the one John Arm- strong viewed, and I'm sorry Inever got that one far enough along that Gordy could have come back for a story as he suggested. | miss Gordy's encourage. ‘ment but others out there can benelit from Joe's treatment of the subject, and hopefully I can contribute to future arti: les. ~ Richard Benjamin, Frederick, Ma. Eliminating those squeaks: | sce a seri ‘ous omission in the construction drav- ings of the raised floor for Joe Fugate's mushroom (February issue). The short walls that support the floor have no shear panels or sway bracing, and a sud- den lunge by someone standing on it could cause the short studs to go down like a row of dominoes. | would recom mend attaching thin plywood (V4 should do) to the sides and continuing it "up onto the edge of the box joist deck. ‘Joe mentions creaking. Creaks ina ‘wood structure are usually caused by parts rubbing against each other. I think if he adds the shear panels to his floor most of his creaking will go away. In addition, a bead of Liquid Nails between plywood and framing before nailing ‘would go. long way toward keeping the platform squeaketree. ‘Also, in my 25 years in the construc tion trades Ive found that particle board ‘can sag with time, For a carpeted floor like Joe's the least expensive V2" or 5° ecking plywood would be a better bet for about the same money. - Dennis Storzek, Big Rock, Ml Belonged elsewhere? You might want to use your relatively new annual maga: zine, Model Railroad Planning, as a plat- form for strategic tomes such as the treatise on mushrooms and save MODEL RAILROADER for tactical articles and clear instructional guides to the practi- ‘al, do-able, and done. Tknow that criticizing is easier than writing an article or editing a fine maga- zine. Articles in the same issue on the Kingsbury Branch, the Carolina Central, Benton station, and containers were ter- rifle. Wish you had added a few pages 10 the container article to inelude some track plan ideas. ~ Fredrick CG. Scheer, Chevy Chase, Md. Still too big: Ive noticed the recent pro- liferation of Kadee-compatible couplers by InterMountain, McHenry, Bachmann, and Accurail. Unfortunately these new ‘couplers also cloned Kadee’s one major flaw in that they're oversized and more suitable for § scale than HO. Oh sure, there's the Kade 711 “old. time” coupler that's scale size, funetions well, and mates with the larger Kadee HO couplers. However, in the “prototyp- {cal looks” department i’s lacking, and it seems to be treated as a stepchild by the manufacturer and doesn’t have the various shank and installation choles found in the regular Kadee HO line, ‘With just a little thought, research, and development these new coupler manufacturers could have given HO scale modelers the coupler of our dreams, one that looks prototypical, works well, i seale size, but would still mate with Kadees. ~ Jared V. Harper, Athens, Ga. Ditto: Why doesn’t some gutsy manu- facturer act really creatively by design- ing and marketing a Kadee-style coupler that is truly scale! But while they may be the largest group now doing it, they were not the first to develop such standards. ‘Traction modelers have been building modules since 1970, following HO and O standards developed by Everitt F. That second-place shot, “Lineup of Pennsy Power,” made me feel as though | had departed this earth and gone straight to heaven. The locomo- tives pictured are nothing less than awe- Inspiring. I hope to be able to afford and run such magnificent models on my small division of the PRR some day. My hat Is off to the photographer. ~ emai from Kris Kollar, Hershey, Pa Step in the right direction: You are right, Andy (February editorial). Fasy- DCC is a positive step in model railroad: ing. It makes the hobby a lot easier and a lot more fun, No more hassle with block toggles. For modelers like me, the Kit approach is both simple and eco- nnomical, Ihave just finished building the ‘command station and a booster and am ‘Ph. 9176481887 anxiously awaiting the arrival of my walkaround throttle and the throttle expander kit. At first [was intimidated, but 1 learned that if you can bulld a rolling stock or structure kit, you should have no problem, Kelth Gutlerrez and Lee Rayburn have not only developed a full featured, quality command control sys- tem, but also have provided us with easy-to-follow instructions on assembly and operation. You only get caught up in the technical part if you choose to. EasyDCC is just what it says it is, easy. | am so happy this magazine fs moving forward in a direction that not only ‘embraces quality projects like this, but also meets the demands of all scales, Including N, and the demands of model railroading’s next generation. ~ Kenny Collins, Garland, Texas Comments, suggestions, and additional infor- ‘mation on MR articles and departments are ‘welcome inthis cluron. A matching plug. is attached to the throttle so it can be unplugged! andl moved to another more convenient location, ‘Throttle systems with “memory” allow you to unplug and change locations while the train is running. -. DH. We have a 150-year-old house which has @ S-foot square basement. thas a die floor with inlaid brick, the walls are flagstone, and the ceiling is open with coal-dust- ‘covered Floor joists. How will this environ ‘ment affect construction of a model rail road? ~ Tyler George, Troy, Ohio ‘Model railroads are sensitive to dust, so eliminating its sources will require checking your local building codes and ‘some financial outlay. Cleaning up a cen- tury’s worth of dirt and coal dust will be ‘a monumental job. Start by eliminating the dirt floor. ‘You'll probably need a contractor's help {or this step, but hopefully the basement Is deep enough so a couple of inches of cconerete floor can be added without cre- ating headroom problems. A suspended celling will trap most of the accumulated coal dust In the rafters and keep it off the ratiroad. You should also think about room lighting at this stage as light fixtures are easy to install along with the ceiling, Finish the room off by insulating and sheathing the walls, There are a number Of possibilities here, so check with your local building materials center to find ‘out what works best in your area “This room preparation is a big job that'll take some time, but it pays off in the long run. The area will be nice to ‘work in and you'll wind up with an envi- ‘ronment that complements your mode! railroad. -J.D.H. ‘have a mid-1970s vintage HO road diesel painted in the Seaboard Coast Line's no. 11776 bicentennial color scheme. The shel is in pretty good shape, but the motor mounts ‘are broken. What's the best way to reattach the motor and what kinds of lubricants should 1 use? ~ Bill Blerman, Ridgewoy, Wis. Your engine sounds like one of the ‘Athearn General Electric US3Bs that was sold in bicentennial colors. While the paint scheme is no longer offered, its mechanism is the same one used in the current Athearn 4.axle GE diesels ‘The no. 84020 plastic motor mounting pads are available from many hobby dealers. They're easy to install. Slip a mounting pad onto each side of the ‘motor, set the assembly into the under- frame cavity, and make sure it’ oriented for proper clearance all the way around, Insert the rubbery fingers into the holes in the bottom of the underframe and press the motor straight down unti it's fully seated. Be careful to use plastic-compatible lubricants which are made for model railroad locomotives. Apply a drop or two of grease to the gears and a sinall drop of light oil on the motor bearings. Don’t overdo the lubrication as a little ‘goes along way. — J.D. H. cannosnAlioasss N SCALE SPECIALS Newl!! Atlas GP-40's $56.95 Burlington Northern Ghessie System B&O. The heavy tran is headed west from Summit, Cll ‘Ym modeling a limestone quarry on my ri road, and I need to know if3-bay open hop- pers are appropriate for hauling gravel. - Tom Luton, Toronto, Ont. Most triple hoppers are designed to carry a 70-or 1004t0n load of coal; how- ever they're also used to haul nearly am thing else that ean be dumped through their self-clearing doors. Rock and most mined ores are denser (heavier) than coal, so It takes less material to reach car's weight capacity or load limit. This load limit cannot be exceeded because It’s determined by the sizes of the freight car's axles and journal bearings. Most hopper cars can be loaded right to the top with coal and still be within the car's load limit. A similar capacity load of stone may only fill about two- thirds of the same car before it reaches the load limit, That's why many open hoppers have a horizontal mark painted fon the outside marked “stone” to show the approximate load height Bulk materials are generally shipped by repeat customers, so the amount of material per load is usually determined early on with a scale. Once the amount ‘of material is known, it's easy for the loading operator to equate this to 20 or 25 buckets of rock per carload. High-grade iron ore is one of the heav- lest of these bulk materials, and it's ust- ally loaded in small piles over each truck or evenly distributed across the hoppers as shown in the photo.~J.D. In 1995, TTX Corp. placed its first order for them, 100 cars painted In the familiar TTX Yellow. ‘The kit also includes two of Rall Power's undecorated 28oot container kits. Construction is simple, with a single sheet including instruc tions and a detail drawing. ‘The kits all come undecorated, with ‘decals for either the lone red Greenbriar ‘car or the TTX scheme. lalrbrushed our sample car with Polly Scale no. 404067 TTX Yellow, then brush-painted the walkways with Testor no. 1146 Silver. This was easier to do than I thought it would be and | recommend it over the alternative of painting the walkways before adding them. The containers were a snap to build ~ Just clean a bit of flash around the roofline and glue the roof in place. [air- brushed the containers with Polly Scale no. 414179 SP Lettering Gray, then applied the decals. Rall Power doesn’t include couplers ‘or trucks, s0 I used a pair of Kadee no. 5 couplers, which fit nleely in the molded In draft-gear box. InterMountain or ‘McHenry couplers would fit as well. It needs at least 22"-radius curves to operate, and it will look and operate ‘much better on broader curves. The finished car weighs just half an ‘ounce, 5.5 ounces short of the weight suggested by National Model Railroad Association Recommended Practice 20.1. As with most models of this type, there simply isn’t any place to add weight. The best solution, as Rail Power's instructions suggest, Is to add ‘weight to each container before gluing the roof in place. Rail Power has done a great job with this modern intermodal ear and contain- cers. —deff Wilson, associate editor
