Here’s what our editors are preparing for the next issue of MacAddict.
If you’re like us, you spent a bit too much on holiday gifts ’n’ grog this year—so we’re going to show you a ho-ho-whole lot
of great free stuff for your Mac. We’re also going to give you a sneak peek at MacAddict’s next incarnation, Mac|Life,
plus we’ll show you how best to manage, troubleshoot, and extend your Wi-Fi connection. Then we’ll show you how
to do most of what .Mac does by using Firefox and free Google tools, how to soup up Safari, how to rock Ubuntu
Linux on your new Mac, and how to manage the ins and outs of iLife’s printing services. Finally, we’ll put the itsy-bitsy,
teeny-weeny iPod shuffle through its paces, and review Pentax’s K100D SLR camera, stinkbot’s TubeSock YouTube utility
software, Aspyr’s The Sims 2: Open for Business expansion pack, and a lot more.

Digital SLR Cameras

Flexibility is the key word when considering a digital SLR (single lens reflex, meaning you view the image to be shot
directly through the lens, not through a separate viewfinder or on an LCD). You have numerous options when it comes to
interchangeable lenses, which range from ultra–wide angle to super-zoom telephoto. Many SLRs have large, high-quality

those shot by point-and-shoot cameras.—RO

Photo-Quality Printers
If all you ever plan to print are snapshots, skip on ahead to our “Snapshot Printers” section (p26). But to display your

When it comes to digital video, there are two types of users: Vacation videographers want a camera that’s portable and

TIPS & TRICKS

Colin McRae Rally Mac Tips

Colin McRae Rally Mac (price TBD, www.feralinteractive.com) is an off-road rally-racing game in which you hone your drift turns and
steering tactics on more than 300 tracks. Try these tips to climb up the ranks, or you may get run off the road.—MO
• Look for opportunities to drive straight instead of turning—it’s faster. Use the hand brake if you swing into a sharp turn.
• For a subtle slowdown, try briefly maneuvering two wheels on a patch of grass.
• Check the weather and road conditions on the stage and adjust your tires before the race; you’ll
be ready for sudden downpours, especially in the UK races.
• Try to have more speed coming out of a turn than going in. Do this by
slowing down before the turn and drift-turning while gaining
traction, and then hit the accelerator.

that come in the transfer-media package.
Once you’ve determined the media-quality setting, you’ll want to flip
your image horizontally before you print. Depending on your printer, you
may be able to flip your image directly through your printer settings; if
