I was looking at a database for Sega Saturn games and I must say many Sega Saturn games just hold up so well. Sega Saturn is the console I wish I bought instead of Playstation (I did buy it later, but if only I had made my collection earlier it would have been cheaper. Both Playstation and N64 games are so much cheaper to get, or even a lot of rereleases exists).

What games do you think are weird and beautiful for Sega Saturn? I love many of the 2d games, here are some examples:

Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter
a legendary 2D fighting game, published by CAPCOM, which was released in Japan in 1998 for the Sega Saturn.

Astal
Action - Platform game, published by Sega Enterprises, Ltd., which was released in Japan in 1995 for the Sega Saturn.

Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari (or The Story of the Seven Winds' Island)
An Adventure game, developed by Givro / Buddy Zoo and published by Enix, which was released in Japan in 1997 for the Sega Saturn.

They look so good I always wanted to try some but most games are either way to expensive or hard to get (or both). The system alone isn't easy to play on a modern TV. Same with Mega CD.

Super Tempo. Never played it, but it looks awesome.
That does look super nice!

edit: I looked up more screens of it:

Super Tempo
an Action - Platform game, published by MEDIAQUEST, which was released in Japan in 1998 for the Sega Saturn.

T-26413G_13,,Sega-Saturn-Screenshot-13-Super-Tempo-JPN.jpg

There was a demo I played over and over;

Baku Baku animal
a Puzzle game, developed by Sega AM3 (Amusement R&D Dept.#3) [Hitmaker] / Sega Enterprises, Ltd. and published by Sega Enterprises, Ltd., which was released in Japan in 1995 for the Sega Saturn.

GS-9040_10,,Sega-Saturn-Screenshot-10-Baku-Baku-Animal-Sekai-Shiikugakari-Senshuken-JPN.jpg
GS-9040_19,,Sega-Saturn-Screenshot-19-Baku-Baku-Animal-Sekai-Shiikugakari-Senshuken-JPN.jpg
GS-9040_23,,Sega-Saturn-Screenshot-23-Baku-Baku-Animal-Sekai-Shiikugakari-Senshuken-JPN.jpg

I did end up getting the whole game, but I do not have it anymore :( I think B, A, C, UP was a cheat code in it :)

A more well known very beautiful 2d gem is

Princess Crown
an Action - RPG game released in Japan in 1997 for the Sega Saturn. From some of the same people behind Odins Sphere

I'm so happy that recently indie games have been pushing beyond 16 bit visuals. I love the Sega Saturn kinda game look :) If you're unfamiliar with Sega Saturn games, please take a look here:

When you find out, please let me know :(

Nights into Dreams
And although it is not 2D, Nights is weird and beautiful too. My brother had Christmas Nights too, and the special 3d pad. He sold it :(

That does look like pure win :) I never knew about this one. Please show me more :)
My father bought me Nights with the 3d controller but my older brother didn't like it so he returned it to Software Etc and kept the money. Jerk.

Dark Savior.

Bad name. Cool looking game!
I've never tried it, but I've read the story is very interesting, with a lot of different endings?

I mentioned my brother, and he loved this 2d game:

Dragon Ball Z Shinbutouden
Fighting game, developed by TOSE Software and published by Bandai, which was released in Japan in 1995 for the Sega Saturn.
T-13302G_36,,Sega-Saturn-Screenshot-36-Dragon-Ball-Z-Shinbutouden-JPN.jpg

T-13302G_17,,Sega-Saturn-Screenshot-17-Dragon-Ball-Z-Shinbutouden-JPN.jpg

Not to be that guy but it's Astal, without the R:)

Ah, no worries, somehow I always spell it with an R :P

How about a 2d game where you are a bunny girl? Quite weird.

Keio Flying Squadron 2
Action - Platform game, published by VICTOR ENTERTAINMENT, which was released in Japan in 1996 for the Sega Saturn.

Easily one of my favorite games. Pretty sure you can get Christmas NiGHTS for cheap these days. Was in a used store a few weeks ago and the guy joked he wouldn't even pay for it cause nobody wants it. Another store near me also has a a few 3D pads which I don't remember being exorbitant.

Besides the games mentioned here, personally I always loved the look of Linkle Liver Story. So happy that it got a fantastic translation this year.

Ah yes! I almost forgot. It is beautiful :)

I think all Super Nintendo fans would love playing Sega Saturn games. Saturn is like the perfect follow up to Super Nintendo :)

Maybe not the right place to ask, but is there a way to play fan translated games on an actual Saturn console?
You can either rip a iso out of your original disc, patch it and burn into a disc or you could do the patching with your iso and mod a sd card reader (rhea or phoebe, is there another one besides those I wonder?) to play it on your original hardware without needing to pirate it.

Not sure if there's another way. Please if someone does know do correct me.

Sonic Team made another 3D game for the Sega Saturn. Not the most beautiful, but it is weird :) Released in 1998.

Fighters Megamix
Made by AM2 and released in 1996. One of the first cross over fighting games. Played a lot like Virtua Fighter.

It was also ported to the Game.com :P

you can make Sega Saturns play burned discs using a Pseudo Saturn Kai, which is a modified Pro Action Replay 4M+. You need another modified saturn to make a Pseudo Saturn Kai yourself, or you can buy one from ebay readily.

Marvel Super Heroes Vs SF is like black magic on the Saturn... looks so damn good, great animation and runs like a dream (and really fast as well). Really puts the piss poor Playstation port to shame. These days its so hard playing the PS1 ports of Capcom fighters (even just to check out the port) when I also have the far superior Saturn ports sitting right beside me. Vampire Savior might look even nicer, what with its awesome character designs and animation (check out Anikaris and Jedah)

I could not remember the name of this but it was awesome another good game was three dirty dwarves
707009-ttd.jpg
That was going to be my pick as well. Looks great in motion but I never really see it talked about :(

Wish I could find some good screenshots, but there aren't really any around. Anyway my pick is Astra Superstars, a fighting game with huge sprites and some unique mechanics. For starters it all takes place in the sky so you have vertical movement too, there is also wall bouncing, follow up dashes, recovery angle tech, before matches you have a little bit of dialogue and depending on how you answer changes how difficult the enemy will be, and there is also a star rank system so if you don't get a KO the round winner is determined by who performed the best (repetitive combos lower your rank, pressure and high variety increases it etc.).

People always seem to forget that the Saturn was on the market for just a few years, a fraction of the time the PSX was alive. virtually every game released on the system was released before Metal Gear Solid on the PSX. Heck, most of the library was released before Final Fantasy VII released in the west. The Saturn had a lot more oomph in it that ever was shown, just as developers started getting their footing developing with the 5 microprocessors in the system, the plug was pulled.

Wow i never thought there was another person who knows about that game! I would do some dirty deeds to get a translation of this. The art style looks so great.
I've never played it, but I love the look of it :)

To this day one of my favorite looks for 3d Sonic is still the Sonic World portion of Sonic Jam. It's just so damn charming.
