Biography:
Camille Hilaire born in Metz on August 2, 1916 and died on June 7, 2004 in Fourges is a French painter, lithographer, stained glass artist, upholsterer and mosaic artist. Camille Hilaire will follow the training of the Beaux-Arts in Paris. In the heart of the Occupation he chose to register under a false name, Leblanc, and exhibited his works in Parisian salons. Albrech Dürer is for him a major source of inspiration from which he will take the characteristic trait, just as he will admire the light emanating from the works of the great Italian painters. Despite the dark years that run through his work, Camille Hilaire's paintings will pierce the viewer's eye with their colors and their dazzling lights. Through his travels, the artist will soak up the beauty that surrounds him from Normandy to Venice.
A master of composition, the artist managed to breathe both calm and passion into his paintings. In 1947 he will move towards a career as a teacher and then teaches drawing and decorative composition at the National School of Art in Nancy before continuing to that of Paris in 1958. He opens up to new techniques and will try his hand at watercolour, lithography, tapestry and stained glass. His work is on the threshold of figuration and post-cubism. Numerous monographs have been devoted to him throughout the world and he remains in the history of art as one of the painters who marked the middle of the twentieth century.
