Out Run 3D remake coming to 3DS eShop in Japan

A 3D remake of classic arcade racer Out Run is hitting the Nintendo 3DS eShop soon, according to an image of an "Out Run 3D" logo posted to the company's Japanese website.

A grayed-out image listing Out Run 3D can be seen in the upper left corner of the page's header. There is no link attached to the image at this time, nor is there any information on a possible release date or pricing. Additionally, 4Gamer posted a picture of the game's logo in color, also shown below, announcing the game's impending release.

When reached for comment, a representative from Sega told Polygon Out Run 3D is currently slated for launch in Japan only.

The original Out Run was designed by Shenmue series creator Yu Suzuki and launched in arcades in 1986. The title was ported to Sega Master System the following year and to the Sega Genesis in 1991. In Out Run, players race in the third person in an attempt to get through stages the fastest or beat time limits. The left side of each route is easier, while the right side presents more of a challenge, adding in more traffic for players to maneuver around.

Last fall, Sega released upgraded 3D remakes of a handful of classic Sega titles through the 3DS eShop. These titles cost $5.99 each and included the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, Shinobi 3 and Space Harrier.
