Count de Vergennes

On 13th February, the passing of Charles Gravier, Count de Vergennes was a terrible loss for France and for Louis XVI.

As a foreign minister, the man was greatly responsible for convincing the King in supporting the American Revolution. Over ten years prior to that, when France had lost Canada during the French and Indian war, Vergennes had predicted the then British colonies in America would soon be fighting for Independence…

When Louis heard his most trusted minister had died, he broke down in tears and said “he was the only friend I could count on and the one minister who never deceived me”… Two years later, the French Revolution erupted. Had this man lived longer to advise the King more soundly, it could have been a totally different story…
