Overview

Yeongwol is a county in the province of Gangwon-do in South Korea. It is well known as the place where King Danjong, the 6th King of the Joseon Dynasty, was exiled when he was abdicated by his uncle, who later became the 7th King of Joseon. Following the attempts by six martyred ministers to restore him to power, Danjong was then murdered and buried there in 1457, after he was perceived as a continuing threat to the rule of his uncle.

Description

Jangneung is the tomb of Danjong, the 6th king of Joseon. After having the throne taken away by Suyang Daegun, his uncle, Danjong was condemned to go into exile in the Yeongwol County, where he was later murdered and his remains were abandoned in the Dongang River. Seondol – also known as the Black and White painting. It is a large rock of about 70m high on Seogang River. It was the shooting place for the famous Korean movie ‘Gaeulro’.

Seonam Village is a small town located along the Seogang riverbank and is surrounded by water on three of its sides. It is famous for its particular cliff which is shaped just like the Korean Peninsula. Cheongnyeongpo Cape is in the upper Namhan river is one of the attractions tourists visits the most because of its stunning view. It is designated as the Historic site No.50.

Looking like an island surrounded by a deep river on three sides, King Danjong was sent into exile to this place after having the throne taken away.

Optional tour – Gossi Cave is an almost 6-km long limestone cave. Koreans took refuge in there during the Japanese invasion of Korea. There are about twenty-four microorganisms inhabiting the cave. You will be able to see stalactites, stalagmites, four lakes, three falls and six plazas, all formed over the past 400 million years.
