N.J. MVC office closed for a week after worker tests positive for coronavirus

MVC agencies hit capacity before mid-day.

Drivers wait outside the MVC agency in Wayne earlier this month after centers opened to long lines July 7. The Wayne licensing center has been closed for a week as of Monday after an employee there tested positive for the coronavirus.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission licensing center in Wayne will be closed for a week after an employee tested positive for the coronavirus, officials said.

All workers who had contact with the employee will quarantined for 14 days, the MVC said in a statement Tuesday. The licensing center will be cleaned and sanitized. It’s the first MVC facility that had to close due to a worker testing positive for the virus, a spokesman said.

“We will monitor the situation at Wayne and work closely with health officials to reopen on July 28, once we have verified a safe and healthy environment for the public and MVC employees,” Chief Administrator Sue Fulton said in the statement.

Motorists advised to go to Oakland, Paterson or Lodi to complete license transactions. The vehicle inspection portion of the Wayne facility appears to remain open with the MVC’s wait time camera showing cars lined up outside, though MVC officials did not immediately respond to clarify.

The Wayne location closed early Monday after the positive test was revealed, News 12 reported.

MVC offices have been plagued by long lines since reopening on July 6. The delays at the Wayne location were worsened by ongoing construction at the facility.

All locations closed down in March as the virus started to spread through New Jersey and the state offered multiple extensions to expiring documents.
