20 Hazleton Standard-Speaker, Saturday, October 1 5, 1 988 Mounts Panthers with 9-0 claim bragging rights whitewashing of Colts if 'it I Jf mww IK it ipi'w By VIRGIL SCOTT For the Standard-Speaker The 1988 Marian-Panther Valley battle for the bragging rights in the valley more than lived up to its pre-game expectations. The Panthers and Colts put on another knock-down, drag' em out four quarter defensive struggle before the Panthers came away with a mighty big 9-0 triumph behind the running of Cory Sheridan and the accurate leg of Donnie McGoory. Sheridan's heroics included a game-high 121 yards on 27 tough carries and the struggle's lone touchdown while McGoory's 23-yard third quarter field goal helped ice the verdict that helps the 5-2 Panthers in their bid for honors in the Anthracite League and Eastern Conference South n-1 races. "I thought we could play this type of football, in fact we're a little disappointed about our two losses, but tonight we played a good football team and we got the job done," Panther coach, Tom Bonner, stated afterwards. "We played outstanding defense all night.

My staff got us ready for both their quarterbacks and their attacks and the kids did the rest. All of them deserve a lot of credit for the win. "Offensively, we saw they were out to stop our passing game and with receivers like Tom (Miller) and (Tom) Rosahac, we sort of expected that. So we took what they gave us and Cory (Sheridan) had an outstanding night," Bonner added. "Anytime you beat a team like Marian it's a big win, so we'll enjoy it until next week." The Panthers running game did not get untracked until late in the second period.

After stopping the Colts (4-3) on downs at the Panther Valley 29 with 4:27 left in the half, the Panther offense took the pigskin to paydirt in just nine plays. The 71-yard march was highlighted by a 19-yard burst, which oddly enough gave the Panthers their first first down of the game, to the Marian 44 by Sheridan and a 17-yard toss from Erik Pecha, who was 4-for-13 for 53 yards, to McGoory. The Pecha-McGoory hookup was especially crucial since it came on a fourth-and nine situation at the Marian 32. Sheridan got the six-pointer on the next play with a 15-yard burst over guard with 46 seconds left until intermission and the first half score stayed at 6-0 when McGoory's PAT (Continued from page 18) against the Mounts in the last two minutes of the game. He also questioned a touchdown that the Warriors had called back because of an ineligible receiver downfield.

It looked like the Mounts were going to have an easy night when, just as they did last week against Wyoming Valley West, they drove 68 yards for a touchdown after receiving the opening kickof Morelli passed 17 yards to Jason Ritz for a key first down and Herbinko and Petrill ripped off carries of 15 and 14 yards, respectively, as the Mounts moved to the Wyoming Area 16. Morelli rolled left and when he couldn't find anybody open ran 16 yards for the first score of the game with 7:07 left in the first quarter. An offensive pass interference call stopped the Warriors on their first possession and the Mounts took over at their 19. Hazleton then moved 81 yards in seven plays with Morelli passing to Shamany for the final 45. Morelli than ran for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 with 11:07 left in the first half.

The teams exchanged fumbles before the Warriors got their first break when 6-8, 250-pound Chris Wickizer caught Morelli in the end zone for a safety. The Warriors took over at midfield following a free kick and, with the aid of an unsportsmanlike call against the Hazleton coaching staff, scored their first touchdown of the game when Larry Yudiski went over from the 4 with 2:10 left in the half. Wyoming Area moved to a first (Continued from page 18) "I just think Minersville came to play and it seemed that at times we were making penalties offsides, holding, etc. that we weren't making the last seven weeks. Minersville deserves all the credit in the world.

They knew what they had to do and did it. They played a heck of a ball game." Quarterback Brian Smolskis, returning after missing last week's 23-0 loss to Blue Mountain with an ankle injury, got the Bat-tlin' Miners on the scoreboard in the first quarter when he hit Alisauckas with a seven-yard scoring toss, capping a six-play, 24-yard drive that was set up when Heath Renninger recovered a Drumheller fumble with 8:15 left in the quarter. Scott Johnson's kick for the PAT was just wide left and the Miners' lead was 6-0. It stayed that way until the Devils stopped a time-consuming drive by the Miners in the second period and drove 74 yards in 12 plays for the tying touchdown. Drumheller hit tight end Kenny Sands with an 11-yard scoring strike on a key fourth-and-three play with 1:04 remaining in the half to tie the score, but the Devils failed to take the lead when Al Pietkiewicz was dropped at the 2 on a quick-snap conversion run.

Minersville regained the lead in the third quarter when Drumheller got off a short punt from the Devil 7, giving the Miners the ball at the Shenandoah 34 with 9: 04 left. With tailback Pat Mason's 25-yard run leading the way, the Miners needed just five plays to score the go-ahead touchdown. Cooper scored from the 2 and it proved to be the game-winner. Smolskis' pass to Jeff Tellez for the conversion was incomplete and the Minersville lead was 12-6 with 7:19 still left in the third IS Summary Wyoming Area 0 1 0 6-15 Hazleton 6 I 6 20 Morelli 6 run (kick (ailed) Shamany 45 pass from Morelli (Morelli run) WA Wickizer tackled Morelli in end zone WA Yudiski 4 run (Wickizer kick) Morelli 2 run (Kick failed) WA Trottini 8 pass from Dolhan (pass failed) WA First Downs 12 13 Rushes-yards 37-139 31-153 Passing yards 57 135 Return yards 38 47 Passes 7-16-0 4-11-1 Punts Fumbles-lost 1-1 1-1 Penalties-yards 5-35 7-60 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS Rushing Wyoming Area, Dolhan 8-9, Polit 4-15, Rose 3-10, Bonomo 3-34, DeLucca 6-29, Yudiski 11-36, Donato 1-5, Nocito 1-1. Nine plays, including a 47-yard pass from Morelli to Shamany moved the ball to the Warrior 2, from where Morelli, with 11:16 left on the clock, found a crack over the left side for his second TD of the game. The Warriors came right back and, aided by a 12-man-on-the-field call against the Mounts on a fourth-and-six, moved 55 yards in 13 plays, with quarterback Greg Dolhan passing eight yards to Bob Trottini for the touchdown with -Miners' Summary Miaersville 6 0 6 0 12 Shenandoah 0 6 0 28 Carey, 7 pass from Smolskis (kick failed) Sands, 44 pass from Drumheller (run failed) Cooper 2 run (pass failed) Safety, ball snapped out of end zone First Downs 10 14 Rushes-yards 37-200 48-197 Passing yards 70 18 Return yards 42 30 Passes 5-12-0 2-15-1 Punts Fumbles-lost 64 3-3 Penalties-yards 11-80 5-28 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS Rushing Minersville, Smolskis 10-57, Cooper 14-99, Mason 5-31, Barton 4-(-4), Kuehn 3-27. The Devils got their only points when the Miners took an intentional safety with 2:20 left in the game rather than punt from their own end zone. The move worked in the Miners' favor, but not before the Devils had one last shot.

After Drumheller returned Smolskis' free kick 18 yards to the Minersville 42, Shenandoah had 2 14 and two timeouts to reach the end zone. It didn't happen. Sands' flea-flicker pass to Jacavage fell incomplete on first down and Drumheller fired three more incomplete passes in succession, forcing the Devils to give the ball up on downs and give the Miners the win. "We'll be back," Williams said. "We'll practice just as hard this week as we have all season.

We know we still have an opportunity to win this thing." Williams had nothing but praise for Minersville. "They made the big plays when FOR TREE WRAP M.59 ROLL OPEN: M0N. The Mounts turned the ball over to the Warriors with 1:48 left and three passes fell incomplete before Dean Avillion gave the ball back to the Mounts when he stopped Tony Bonomo one yard short of the first down.

Drumheller hit Sands with an apparent 59-yard touchdown pass that would have tied the score in the fourth quarter, but an illegal motion call on the Devils negated the score. "They (officials) said our motion man turned up field too quick," Williams said.

"This was the most I've carried the ball in any one game, but the line, especially the guards made it easy. This was a big game for all of us, so you don't get tired. It's great to win against Marian." Midway in the third period, Panther Valley got another scoring march underway and this one put added pressure on McGoory. The Panthers went 66 yards on 14 plays with a 23-yard pass from Pecha to Tom Miller, a key five-yard penalty against the Colts on a fourth-and-two try at the Colt 35 and 29 yards from Sheridan on eight carries highlighting the effort. After a Pecha pass to Tom Miller went incomplete on a third-and goal try at the Colt 5, coach Bonner called on McGoory for a crucial 23-yard field goal attempt.

The 5-10 senior banged the kick through Tamaqua averted a shutout when Blue Raider signal caller Kevin Krell ran 16 yards for a touchdown and then tacked on the two-point conversion. Cory Sheridan 121 yards rushing with 1:08 left in the third stanza and the 9-0 Panther advantage forced Marian to think about coming up with two late scores instead of just one. "I didn't keep my head down on the extra point try and I shanked it," McGoory stated. "When it came time for the field goal, I kept my concentration, I kept my head down and it went through.

This is my first field goal of the season, but it's my biggest ever since it helped beat the Colts." Marian did have its chances in both halves, but each time either the Panther defense denied them the end zone or the Colts found a way to thwart their own efforts. "We have self-destructed in each of our losses and I really don't have the answers now as to why," Stan Dick, the Marian coach, made several bad reads when they stopped us defensively, they executed when they had to and we didn't. We got caught expecting something else on that lookin that set up their touchdown, but give those guys (the Panthers) credit, they deserve it, they played very well tonight." The Colts reached the Panther 35 twice and the 29 once before halftime mainly on the running of Greg Izzo, who had 69 yards on 21 tries, only to have the Panther Valley defense hold them on downs and after a 41-yard keeper by Mike Makovec, who had 64 yards on 11 carries, put them deep in Pnather territory in the fourth quarter, Marian coughed up the ball on a fumble at the Panther 4. The Colts last two scoring tries ended on Panther interceptions by Bill Maynard and Sheridan. George Day returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown and Blue Mountain's defense held Tamaqua in check until the final quarter en route to a 13-8 victory over the Blue Raiders Friday night in Tamaqua. Both teams played scoreless football until the final 12 minutes of play when each offense suddenly caught fire. Pine Bark Rakes (Continued from page 18) maintain a 21-15 edge. The big play in the Spartans' scoring drive was John Bozena's 57-yard kickoff return. Mount Carmel came up with the big defensive play early in the fourth period when Mike Merlo recovered a fumbled Spartan punt that gave the Tornadoes the ball at the North Schuylkill 48. Twelve plays later, John Wascavage leaped over the North Schuylkill defense from the one-yard line and Wesoloskie passed to Cole for the conversion to extend Mount Carmel's advantage to 29-15. North Schuylkill put on one more valiant attempt to get back into the game when Swearhart moved the ball quickly with completions to Bob Mitchell (24) and Bozena (24).

Bozena finally broke into the end zone with 35 seconds remaining to cut the North Schuylkill deficit to 29-21, but the Spartans missed the conversion and Mount Carmel recovered the ensuing onsides kick to send the visitors down to defeat for the first time in 1988. "We surprised them with a few things we haven't run all season," said Diminick. "Our kids just rose to the occasion and beat a very good football team. "You could see the intensity was there on both sides of the football and they weren't about to lose this game."
