THE TENNESSEAN Friday. January 19 199 tjf. helbyville, Coffee County set for fireworks By HAROLD HUCCINS Wrestling for the weekend The Middle Tennessee Grand Championships wrestling tournament will be held today and tomorrow at Overton High School. The event hosts 35 Midstate wrestling programs. Today, the junior varsity, freshman and middle school matches begin at 4 p.m., run- '-ning until approximately 10:30 p.m.

Tomorrow, everything begins at 8 a.m. with the conclusion of the middle school rounds. At 9, the JV and freshman finals begin. The varsity competition starts at 1 1 am, and will run until 9 p.m. JEFF PEARLMAN back in a recent game after suffering a seven-stitch gash in the face, showing some of her toughness.

"IVe tried to emphasize to our players that there are always two seasons, one before Christmas and one after Christmas," Donaldson said. "January is a month we hope well start to focus on the tournaments," Insell said. "And playing in this district certainly prepares us for it" Other big games find Clarksville Northeast visiting Northwest Hen-dersonville at Beech, Maplewood at Glencliff and a big showdown tomorrow night in Columbia when the host Lions take on No. 4-ranked Oakland. league loss with a 67-46 romp over Lincoln County.

"WeVe played a really tough schedule," Insell said. "We lost to the No. 1 team USA Today Oregon City then we beat Altoona, on their home court to finish third. We played good Memphis Hamilton and Milligan teams on the road. We're anxious to finally play a home game." Insell said juniors Allison Clark and Chrissie Davenport have provided a spark for Shelbyville recently, along with Carrie Snyder, the lone senior starter.

Monica Dillon and Kandy Gilley, along with Emily Taylor, have played well lately for Coffee County. Donaldson said that Dillon came a 39-0 season when the program began to gain national prominence. "It's always been a good game when we've played them, and I guess it adds to it by the fact I played for him," said Donaldson, 27, now in her fourth year at the Manchester school. "We've got a very competitive district The last couple of weeks, we've come around as a team." "It Shelbyville-Coffee County has grown into a big rivalry, mainly because they have become so good," Insell said. "Well have a packed house for it" Last month, Coffee County stunned Shelbyville in overtime, the Eaglettes' lone district loss.

Last Tuesday, Coffee avenged its lone apons writer This one's almost like a state tournament or region finals game Shelbyville and Coffee County, two teams embedded in the District 8-AAA stronghold of girls basketball, clash tonight In Shelbyville, with the winner gaining a strong leg up on the regulaweason title. It's the biggest girls game on a busy prep night Shelbyville is ranked No. 1 in this week's Associated Press poll, Coffee No. 6. Both teams are 5-1 in the district, Shelbyville is 12-3 overall, Coffee County 14-3.

Add surprising Lawrence County (13-1) for a strong three-team race. It could be billed as the up-and- coming team of the "90s (Coffee County) against the giant of Tennessee girls basketball (Shelbyville), owner of six titles under Coach Rick Insell and eight overall. In Missy Donaldson's first year at Coffee County, at age 24, she guided the 32-3 Raiders to the 1993 state title after years of finishing back in the district pack. Last year, Insell won his sixth title as his 32-2 team beat Bradley in the finals. Added in all the mix is that Donaldson was a feisty point guard who played for Shelbyville and Insell and who, as a senior in 1986, helped Insell win his very first title during I MMW SCOREBOARD cToor-Zi-l TODAY'S HIQHLIQHTS Pro basketball Program Time Station Charlotte at Miami 7 p.m.
