George Anthony, the father of Casey Anthony, drove off the road and flipped his car in a crash near Daytona Beach that left him incapacitated and the vehicle disabled, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Anthony told the responding trooper he did not remember what happened prior to the crash. The trooper's report suggests Anthony was ill or fainted.

Anthony, 67, was driving west on Interstate 4 east of State Road 44 just after 3 p.m. Saturday when he drove off the shoulder of the highway, the FHP report said.

When Anthony attempted to swerve left back onto the roadway he lost control of the vehicle and "began to overturn several times," the report said. The vehicle, a green 1999 Toyota 4Runner 4D registered to his wife Cindy, finally came to a rest off the median shoulder on the other side of the road, the report said.

Anthony, who was alone in the vehicle, was taken to Halifax Medical Center with "incapacitating" injuries. No alcohol or drug use was suspected, the report said.

The 4Runner was disabled and suffered an estimated $10,500 of damage.

George and Cindy Anthony were thrust into the national spotlight more than 10 years ago after the disappearance of their 2-year-old grandaughter Caylee near their Orlando home led to accusations of child neglect and then murder against his daughter Casey Anthony.

In 2009, Daytona Beach police interrupted George Anthony's suicide overdose attempt in the Hawaii Motel on South Ridgewood Avenue after receiving a 9-1-1 call from the Anthony family's attorney.

Cindy Anthony told investigators at the time her husband was upset and depressed about the death of their granddaughter, the police report stated. She said that the day before he disappeared, she’d asked him to pick out some jewelry for Caylee for her funeral. She said the request may have upset him further.

During a month-and-a-half-long trial and media circus that gripped the nation, Casey's defense lawyers said that Caylee's death had been a drowning accident and that George Anthony had helped cover up the death. Casey Anthony's story changed several times during the course of the investigation and trial.

Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murder in 2011 but was found guilty of lying to investigators.

She and her father do not speak, according to later interviews.
