Duke Nukem 3D is 20 years old.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
An IBM or 100% compatible 486 computer with 8MB RAM, a VGA graphics card, 25MB of free space on a HDD, and a CD-ROM drive. Game also supports SVGA in which case go with a 486 DX2/66 Pentium.

How is Duke 3D different from Doom? The answer is level design. Duke 3D might not be as well balanced as Doom, or even its cousin Shadow Warrior, but Duke 3D has exceptionally detailed levels. Not just in a videogamey way, but in a sense that the levels looked like relatively functional real life locations.

The Red Light District level had a porno mag storefront, naughty booths, a pool table, a bar, and a strip club. There was a cash register and a stool for the clerk. Most buildings had actual bathrooms. And mirrors which a lot of games these days can't even do. It sounds so trivial but altogether it makes every level memorable today, much less back then.

You also had a movie theatre, jail, firehouse (not the sub place), subway (again, not the sub place), fast food burger joint, sushi bar, bank, hotel, and even an abortion clinic. This game is proof that a contemporary setting can be extremely engaging, without setting it in the same old middle east or new york. And best of all, 3D Realms managed to put secrets into every nook and cranny, without relying TOO much on ventilation like a certain *cough* Half Life *cough*.

If you haven't played Duke 3D, please don't just think of it as just pop culture references and Duke's one-liners. Those facets added much to the game but they weren't the meat and potatoes. Explore the levels themselves and you'll be surprised at how smoothly everything comes together and how much detail was packed in. Except for Episode 2 which is sci-fi shit but even that had some fun levels, and certainly the most "spooky" levels.

One of the best FPS:s ever! I'm always saddened when people seemingly only bring up the humor of the game but not the amazing level design, interactivity and the satisfying shooting/weapons.

Hail to the king, baby!

The level and weapon design on the game was amazing, and Duke's lines were just icing on the cake really.

IIRC there was a level where you could use the shrink gun (generally used to enable you to kill enemies by stepping on them) against a mirror to shrink yourself and use small package - something it's (literally) the little things that make a game shine.

I remember having a conversation with my cousin that went down like
"Is it true that game has a line 'I'm gonna rip off your head and shit down your neck?'"
"It is, and he does." Then promptly played the episode 2 boss to prove it.
Hail to the king baby!

Awesome game and much better than most modern games in the genre, but then the same could be said about many nineties FPS games. Such a shame CoD and Half-Life made the genre so limited and scripted :(

I hate the protozoid slimers. I shiver when I think about replaying episodes 2 and 3 to this day. Just creep me out.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
The game is just as well designed and crazy amounts of fun today as it was when it was first released 2 decades ago.

First FPS I really got hooked into. Loved how interactive the environment was.

And I played entirely with keyboard, no mouse.

I absolutely love this game! Shameful that I forgot its 20th anniversary but not Quake's. When it came out I was in 6th grade so Mature games were a big contention between my mom and I (Even tho I had all the Doom's, Wolf, SOD, Quake etc.) So I devised a plan to get my mom and grandma to buy it for me at K-mart. What I did was take a T rated game box and cut out the T rating, then put some tape on the back. Once we got to the store I put it on the box over the Barometer that said violence/nudity/sex. Great times to be had.

I just checked my closet where I have all my old PC game boxes and I have 6 Duke 3d boxes! The original from K-mart, Atomic Edition, 3 expansions and oddly a 2nd Duke it Out in DC box...don't remember why I had two boxes.

My cousin and I were pretty hype for this at the time because we played so much of the 2D Duke Nukems(I was 11 and he was 9 at the time). Also, I must admit that Duke 3D was my first experience with playing online MP via Heat.net

I remember playing 1on1 direct-dial Dukematches with my best friend, each using up both of our house's 2 phone lines to talk to each other over the phone while playing. Good times.

Batteries the CRISIS!
N... no. No.

If.... if this is 20, then how old am I?

My reaction to the thread title, haha

Duke Nukem really does have realistic environments, detail-wise. This game, Dark Forces and a little later GoldenEye set my expectations for what FPS environments should look like.

One of the absolute best and most influential games ever made. I'll never forget playing the Duke 3D shareware demo for the first time, right when it came out. I could not have imagined FPS getting better than Doom/Heretic/Hexen, but Duke 3D raised the bar big time. Even though Quake came out later that summer, the Build engine had quite a solid life.

If only we could get a DN sequel made by MachineGames. They would semmingly be the perfect dev to rejuvenate the Duke and keep the things that made the franchise what it is.

I dismissed it in the 90's and only played it for the first time last year. And I'm glad I did since it has now becomes one of my favorite FPS ever.
