When Susan Boyle took the stage of Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, the unassuming 47-year-old told Simon Cowell she dreamed of being a professional singer but had never been given a chance.

Her magnificent “I Dreamed a Dream” performance from Les Misérables shocked the Judges, the audience, and, eventually, the world. The Scottish singer continued to make waves for years to come, earning two Grammy nominations and three Guinness World Records (one for being the oldest artist to reach number one with a debut). The “Wild Horses” singer has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.
After embarking on The Ten Tour in 2020 to celebrate a decade of musical success, Boyle took a break from the spotlight and has been laying relatively low ever since.

Boyle suffered a minor stroke in April, but on June 5, 2023, she returned to the scene with a remarkable appearance on the season finale of Britain’s Got Talent, where for the first time, she publicly spoke about the health emergency that almost derailed her career.
Dressed in a sparkling midnight-blue floor-length gown, “SuBo” earned a standing ovation after she performed with the cast of Les Misérables, reprising the song that skyrocketed her to fame.

On Britain’s Got Talent, the 62-year-old confessed that she feared she would never perform again. When asked how she felt to be back on the show 14 years after her debut, she replied, “It’s extra special for me, actually, last April there, I suffered a minor stroke, and I thought it’d be crazy to be back on stage and I have done it.”

Beaming with pride, Simon Cowell told her, “If anyone was gonna come back, you were gonna come back because we wouldn’t be the same without you. You are amazing.” The Judge admitted that he was aware of her health issues.
Fans took to social media, posting hundreds of supportive and encouraging comments on her Instagram. One post read, “You are so loved by so many, Susan. Glad to hear you are recovering. Stay strong and feel the love from the world around you.”
Boyle opened up on Instagram about the stroke’s impact on her voice and her triumphant return to BGT.
“This evening was even more special for me as in April of 2022, I had a stroke,” she wrote. “For the past year, I have worked so hard to get my speech and singing back, with the sole aim of being able to sing on stage again & tonight my hard work & perseverance paid off, singing the song that started it all, ‘I Dreamed a Dream.’”
Despite amassing a reported fortune of $40 million, Boyle still lives in the family home she grew up in in West Lothian, Scotland, she told The Guardian.
The down-to-earth singer said, “I did buy a posh house after BGT, but I never moved in. My niece lives there now.”
Through the years, Boyle has raised money for many causes encompassing disaster relief, homelessness, cancer, children, and human rights, according to Look to the Stars. She has been known also to donate her sparkly performance dresses to charity.
For someone who has given so much in so many ways, it’s her turn once again to bask in the adoration of a loyal fanbase.
