A beautiful town has been named among the best for commuters to London but the problem is not many people can afford to live there.

Desirable Haslemere is popular with those who travel into the capital every day, with the Surrey town less than an hour away by train to Waterloo. But there's one big draw back if you're looking for smooth access to central London - average house prices are approaching £750,000.

Exorbitant property costs make living there an unattainable dream for many with detached houses selling for an average price of £1,111,723. But those who can afford to move will find a market town nestled among the countryside with some wonderful pubs and fantastic scenery.

Haslemere comes packed with its own culture and community, but has several notable drawbacks, Express.co.uk report. It was ranked 100th in the Telegraph's top 100 commuter towns, but came 31st in the publication's top 50 most desirable places to live in England.

But sitting in top spot is Slough, made famous by hapless David Brent in The Office with funnyman Ricky Gervais poking fun at the Berkshire town and it's supposedly non-existent nightlife. Lambasted as dreary, the suburban setting for BBC hit was also crowned the best place to work and live in the UK in 2017.

Haslemere is close to many lovely natural spots, including being less than an hour's drive from the family-friendly beach of West Wittering, with just a simple stint on the nearby A3 taking you straight there. It also lots of National Trust sites on the doorstep.

These include Shottermill, Black Down and Marley Common, which are great places to catch some fresh air. The woodland retreat of Swan Barn Farm is also within walking distance of the High Street. It offers a different landscape for every season, reports SurreyLive.

Different flora and fauna crop up throughout the year, and it's full of dog-friendly strolls. For those looking for longer hauls, however, the 64-mile-long Serpent Trail starts at Swan Barn Farm and showcases some of the most beautiful parts of the nearby area.

Haslemere was named one of the best places to live in Surrey in the most recent Muddy Stilettos guide, alongside Godalming and Ripley. Its town hall also puts on a variety of plays, films and other shows throughout the year.

However, while the short trip into London is a huge plus, the Telegraph noted some particular drawbacks that kept the town at the bottom of its top 100 list. The town is light on schools. There are just four good or excellent primary schools in the area, while no secondary schools in the area meet the same standard.
