Elizabeth rose to fame in 1989 when she was cast as Jessie Spano on Saved By The Bell, a role that was made specifically for her.

She had originally auditioned to play Kelly Kapowski, but faced stiff competition from actress Tiffani Amber Thiessen who went on to win the role.

NBC executives weren't willing to let Berkley go that easily, which led to the creation of her character Jessie. Elizabeth starred in Saved By The Bell and its TV film instalments until it ended in 1993.

Following her role in Saved By The Bell, Elizabeth decided to pursue a film career and was cast as Nomi Malone in the 1995 film Showgirls.

The script for Showgirls was the most expensive ever sold at the time, but it ultimately became a box office flop.

Elizabeth said she was "blamed" for the film's failure and claimedshe was "bullied" by some people in Hollywood.

"Of course it was disappointing that it didn't do well, but there was so much cruelty around it. I was bullied," she told People in 2020.

Elizabeth added: "I didn't understand why I was being blamed. The job as an actor is to fulfil the vision of the director. And I did everything I was supposed to do."

In 1998, she found herself caught up in a $45 million lawsuit against Leonardo DiCaprio and several of his friends over an alleged assault on Elizabeth's then-boyfriend Roger Wilson.

Wilson claimed the Titanic star encouraged his pals to attack him outside the Manhattan restaurant Asia de Cuba on March 4, 1998.

The alleged assault was said to be over Berkley.

DiCaprio denied encouraging his friends to attack Wilson, who later split from Berkley. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2004.
