Obituary | Dr. Helmer "Myke" R. Myklebust | Miller Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory

Helmer R. Myklebust, age 97 died on Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center. Memorial services will he held in Christ the Victor Chapel of First Lutheran Church. Helmer Rudolph Myklebust was born August 2, 1910 in Lester, Iowa to Samson and Alice (Gjertson) Myklebust. The family moved to a farm near Jasper, MN when he was a young child. He had two brothers and five sisters. He attended a country grade school and graduated from Jasper high school. He received a BA Augustana College, MA Gallaudet College, MA Temple University, Ed.D Rutgers University, Columbia University: Child Psychology Vineland Training School: Internship in Mental Retardation and Clinical Psychology, Montreal Neurological Institute, Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, and a LITT.D (honorary) from Augustana College. His areas of specialization included: Clinical Psychology, Pediatric Neuropsychology, Deaf, Blind, Deaf-Blind, Mental Retardation, Emotional Disturbance and Learning Disabilities, his life was dedicated in diagnosing brain damaged children. He was one of the originators of the concept of learning disabilities in children and he became the founder and director of the Institute for Language Disorders at the University of Illinois, Chicago. The Institute gained worldwide recognition scientists and scholars came from around the world to study at the Institute. Dr. Myke, as his students and patients called him, was the author of numerous books and articles in Professional Journals. Heirner was a member of First Lutheran Church. He enjoyed reading, writing, research, travel, and training Arabian horses. Helmer married Helen Qualset on Sept 27, 1939. She died in 1986. He married Mary Barkley Sept. 26, 1992. Survivors include his wife, Mary, five step children and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his sisters and brothers. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church Organ Fund or to Augustana College Mikkelsen Library.
