Carl Larsson

Carl Larsson

  May 28, 1853
  January 22, 1919
   •   Art Nouveau   •   Wikipedia: Carl Larsson

Carl Larsson grew up in poor conditions in Sweden. But his talent and hard work made him a respected artist.

The foundation of his career was laid by his primary school teacher who recognized his talent and therefore enrolled him in the art academy. At the age of 23 he was awarded a Royal Medal for the painting "Sten Sture the Elder Frees the Danish Queen Kristina from Imprisonment", thanks to which he was able to free himself from poverty. He painted paintings and watercolours and as a book illustrator he created numerous drawings. To this day he is Sweden's most famous and popular artist and is admired worldwide.

But it was not only his paintings that inspired people from all over the world; his family life, which he loved to paint most, was also picture book ripe. On one of his journeys he fell in love with the artist Karin Bergöö, whom he married in 1883. With her he had eight children, one of whom sadly died in childbirth. The family lived in a fairytale cottage they called "Lilla Hyttnäs", which means small cottage. Together with his wife, they furnished the house, so the entire interior was designed and furnished by the two of them.
Today the couple is considered the founders of the typical Swedish style of living. The house they lived in can be admired as a museum.
