Would leaving River Plate do Rafael Santos Borre any good?

Rafael Santos Borre's future has been a hot topic of discussion in recent months.

The forward's name is appearing often in the press in Argentina, where he plays for River Plate, in Colombia, where he's from, and in Spain, where he's previously played.

If Atletico Madrid don't exercise their buy-back clause, Borre could be free to leave River in the coming months.

However, the 24-year-old has a big debt to River, to Marcelo Gallardo and to Buenos Aires.

They were the ones who showed faith in him and gave him a second chance following his torrid time at Atletico.

Los Rojiblancos still own 50 percent of the player's rights, but Borre would prefer not to re-join if they decide to buy him fully.

In fact, he rejected the chance to return to Atletico in January, who were planning to move him on to Celta Vigo.

The same situation could arise again this summer and, if Atletico pay the rest of the money, Borre will have no choice but to leave River.

If Borre does have to leave Argentina this summer, a number of clubs have emerged as contenders to sign him, either directly from River or from Atletico.

Ajax are one of those and would be a place where Borre could continue his development as a player and earn himself a Colombia call-up.

Porto are another favourite destination for Colombians and Borre could follow in the footsteps of Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Fredy Guarin and Jackson Martinez if he moves to Portugal.

However, the desire of many players to return to River following failed spells in Europe should be noted by Borre.

The likes of Pity Martinez, Sebastian Driussi, Ramiro Funes Mori and German Pezzella have all returned to River in recent times.
